Mysterious Beautiful Wife at Home (GL) - Chapter 08
Zhang Yuning wasn’t used to sharing a bed with anyone, let alone a woman as dangerous as Chi Nian. She was utterly bewitching, mysterious and alluring. Though Zhang Yuning wasn’t the type to indulge in physical intimacy before emotional connection, it was still necessary to guard against it. After all, she belonged to the Third Young Miss and had stayed with Chi Nian for a purpose.
They could maintain a superficial relationship, but getting too close was out of the question.
“The sofa is quite comfortable. I don’t like sleeping on beds, so I’ll stay here,” she said, searching for an excuse to refuse.
“The sofa is too soft. It’s bad for your back.”
“My back is fine. It’s no problem.” In truth, Zhang Yuning had injured her back before, and her own bed at home was firm. Sleeping
on the sofa wouldn’t be comfortable, but this was just her way of deflecting.
Chi Nian didn’t press further. After a pause, she said, “I need you to stay by my side at all times. Right now, you’re outside
while I’m inside. Do you really think this room is completely safe?”
“What’s unsafe about the room?”
“I’m afraid of the dark.” Chi Nian’s answer sounded like a rare moment of vulnerability. It was hard to imagine someone so composed
and unflappable suddenly admitting to such a fear.
Did the presence of a nightlight in the room prove someone was afraid of the dark? Whether the excuse held up or not, Zhang Yuning
had no intention of agreeing to share a bed.
“What are you afraid of?” Chi Nian asked, as if trying to provoke her.
“Me?”
“It’s a two-meter bed. It’s not like I’ll eat you.”
Zhang Yuning chuckled. “Miss Chi, there’s no need to say that. I just don’t want to disturb your rest by sharing the bed.”
“I don’t mind. Come inside with me.” Chi Nian reached out to pull her in, but Zhang Yuning reacted swiftly, moving her hand away
and leaving Chi Nian grasping at air. For a split second, the atmosphere froze. Whether it was an illusion or not, Zhang Yuning
thought she saw a flicker of sorrow in Chi Nian’s eyes.
She didn’t want any physical contact, absolutely none. Avoiding Chi Nian’s approach, she stood up from the side. “Fine, we’ll sleep
on opposite sides. Don’t worry, I sleep on my back and don’t move around.” At this point, she had no choice but to accept. Refusing
her employer too vehemently would only make her seem overly deliberate.
“Fine.”
Chi Nian said nothing more and walked into the bedroom alone. Zhang Yuning, exhausted, rubbed her eyes and followed.
The lighting in the room was still dim, as if it could be extinguished with a single breath just like her relationship with Chi
Nian. They had known each other for only two days, understood nothing about one another, and everything had started with that
inexplicable night together.
The turmoil in her heart stemmed entirely from Chi Nian’s strange behavior and enigmatic nature. Sharing a bed would be just that
sleeping. Nothing more.
Chi Nian moved to the inner side of the bed, and only then did Zhang Yuning get a clear look at her nightgown. It was even more
revealing than the evening gown she had worn earlier. The back was nearly completely exposed, with thin straps running from her
shoulders to her waist. As she lifted the hem slightly, the slender curve of her lower back formed the most alluring arch. The
shape of her shoulder blades resembled butterfly wings, perfectly embodying the delicate beauty of “butterfly bones.” The length of
the gown barely covered her underwear. If she bent even slightly, the tantalizing glimpse of lace would be impossible to ignore,
inviting endless fantasies.
Perhaps it was her striking beauty, or perhaps the innate nobility of her upbringing, but Chi Nian’s slim figure only accentuated
her breathtaking allure. When she sat down, the hollow of her collarbone beneath the V-neck shifted from pale to faintly golden
under the glow of the nightlight, and even her features seemed softened into a hazy dream.
“I wake up at seven every morning. I’ll need a latte and a slice of whole wheat bread for breakfast. Make sure it’s ready.” With
that, Chi Nian lay down, turning her back to Zhang Yuning in silence.
Chi Nian’s handbag was still in the same spot. Even when lying down, she maintained her habitual side-sleeping position, still
preferring to keep one arm outside the covers perhaps to protect that secret-filled bag.
At seven, Zhang Yuning woke up to make breakfast and chuckled to herself. She never usually rose before nine. Over the next three
months, her sleep schedule would likely be all over the place, but as long as there was some semblance of order in the chaos, it
would be fine.
She was exhausted. One blanket, Chi Nian on the other side lying down only brought back memories of their intimate moments.
Thankfully, the bed was spacious, and Chi Nian slept close to the edge. Zhang Yuning pushed away those distracting thoughts, lay
flat, and closed her eyes.
The fatigue was overwhelming. After pulling an all-nighter, Zhang Yuning desperately needed sleep and drifted off quickly.
Unexpectedly, Chi Nian appeared in her dreams.
Zhang Yuning dreamed of Chi Nian standing by a window, gazing at her. In that silent exchange, she found herself inexplicably
stepping forward, pulling Chi Nian into a deep kiss. There were no elaborate scenes, no memorable dialogue just the lingering
warmth of Chi Nian’s gentle response, the heat of her tongue seeping into Zhang Yuning’s heart.
It was an intoxicating dream. At least in that moment, Zhang Yuning felt an inexplicable attachment to Chi Nian. A sensation so
strange and indescribable.
Perhaps she had pushed herself too hard. Zhang Yuning slept deeply, unlike her usual restless nights where she’d wake multiple
times. This time, she slept straight through till morning, completely forgetting Chi Nian’s instructions. Without an alarm or any
internal clock, she had no way of knowing the time.
When she opened her eyes, her first groggy thought was confusion about where she was. The unfamiliar surroundings slowly jogged her
memory, bringing everything back especially that vivid dream of their kiss.
This almost turned into a full-blown wet dream.
She grabbed her phone from the nightstand, 9:00 a.m.!
The room was dim, curtains drawn with only the faint glow of a nightlight. Chi Nian was long gone from the bed. Waking up now, the
entire encounter and everything that had happened felt like a dream.
What was it she was supposed to do at seven? Zhang Yuning had a vague memory but couldn’t recall the details just that there was
something. She got up and stepped out of the room. The bright living room made her squint as she searched for Chi Nian. When she
reached the kitchen, she spotted milk and eggs on the table then it hit her. Chi Nian had asked her to prepare breakfast.
Was she about to get scolded? Zhang Yuning sighed and headed to the office area. Sure enough, Chi Nian was there, seated on the
sofa, flipping through some documents. She had changed into a striking dark blue off-shoulder dress, so engrossed in her reading
that she didn’t notice Zhang Yuning’s arrival.
“Uh… I forgot to set an alarm and overslept. Sorry about that.”
Chi Nian held the folder in her hands, looking up with a smile. Her hair, slightly curled for volume, cascaded naturally over her
shoulders, loosely pinned back on both sides. Her bangs didn’t obscure her eyes when she lowered her gaze, and the ends of her hair framed her collarbones, half-hidden, half-revealed.
Smoothing her skirt as she stood, she beamed. “It’s fine. Go brush your teeth, eat breakfast, and change. We leave in an hour.”
It was hard to tell whether the dress enhanced her beauty or she elevated the dress. Though the dark blue hue was deep, it only
amplified her allure. The subtle floral print on the fabric, with one barely noticeable blossom embroidered at the bust, wasn’t
tacky but instead exuded elegance. The off-shoulder design, with a single draped strap, naturally accentuated the dress’s
silhouette. Her star-and-moon earrings. The star resting against her earlobe, the crescent brushing her cheek paired with her light
makeup, made her features even more striking. When she stood, the way the dress hugged her curves made her look sensual without
being overtly provocative.
Who could resist such a woman? Who wouldn’t be bewitched at first glance?
Zhang Yuning considered herself fortunate to be emotionally detached, yet even she found it hard not to admire Chi Nian’s beauty.
Surprisingly, Chi Nian wasn’t even angry about her oversleeping and had prepared breakfast instead her emotional stability was
almost frightening.
“Mm, oh, okay.” Zhang Yuning averted her gaze, then realized she didn’t know where to change clothes. As she turned around to ask,
Chi Nian spoke first: “There’s a wardrobe for you. Pick whatever you want to wear.”
Zhang Yuning’s lips moved soundlessly before she simply nodded. Her information search wasn’t complete yet; what exactly did Chi
Nian plan to do outside? Dressing so conspicuously would make her easily recognizable. Miss Chi’s scandalous news would be all over
the tabloids again.
After quickly washing up and finishing breakfast, she entered the dressing room. Facing the massive wardrobe, she wasn’t sure where
to find suitable clothes. Opening cabinet after cabinet, she saw only Chi Nian’s collection. Endless rows of designer dresses, high
heels, and luxury handbags in unique, limited-edition styles that could only be described as an overwhelming display of opulence.
The third cabinet revealed a completely different aesthetic: professional workwear, practical casual outfits, loose sportswear. All
in Zhang Yuning’s exact measurements, clearly prepared in advance.
Did Chi Nian possess some supernatural ability? How else could she have clothes matching Zhang Yuning’s style ready? Even the
pajamas couldn’t have been coincidence. But how could she have predicted Zhang Yuning would sneak into the Chi residence that
night? This was the most baffling part.
Since Chi Nian was dressing so extravagantly, Zhang Yuning needed to maintain a proper bodyguard image worthy of Miss Chi’s beauty and elegance. She selected a white stand-collar shirt, layered with a gray casual blazer—formal yet unrestrictive. From the trousers section, she chose black tapered ankle pants paired with short boots.
Normally preferring athletic wear for comfort, Zhang Yuning now braided her hair into a high ponytail for practicality, ready to
face whatever the day might bring.
Chi Nian waited by the entrance, fully prepared. When Zhang Yuning emerged, her eyes flickered momentarily, a smile tugging at her
lips.
“What’s so funny? Do I look terrible?” Zhang Yuning wondered if her fashion sense had failed her.
“No, you look very professional. Very bodyguard-like.”
That description suited perfectly. Zhang Yuning raised an eyebrow and moved to open the door for Chi Nian. From this moment onward,
she needed to be on high alert. Miss Chi was technically still in a state of disappearance.
In the elevator, as Zhang Yuning reached for the lobby button, Chi Nian said, “Basement level two.”
“Driving out?”
“Mhm.”
Unable to discern Chi Nian’s intentions, Zhang Yuning asked no further questions. A bodyguard’s duty was to follow orders. The
building being so tall, she positioned herself slightly in front of Chi Nian, wary of potential elevator stops.
“No one will enter this elevator.”
“Really?”
“Not when going to B2.”
“Okay.” Zhang Yuning stepped back slightly, creating distance between them. Chi Nian’s intoxicating fragrance was dangerously
alluring. The perilous aura of a beautiful trap constantly surrounded her.
In the spacious elevator, the two women stood at opposite diagonals.
Chi Nian stood with her arms crossed, one hand holding her bag, her posture upright. Her sleek black stilettos, about 5 centimeters
high, featured buckles extending toward the pointed tips—a stylish design that perfectly complemented her long dress. The heels
nearly leveled her height with Zhang Yuning’s as she stood tall and poised, exuding an impeccable aura.
Her outfits always set the trend, dazzlingly glamorous yet unattainably refined, making everything around her pale in comparison.
“Why are you standing so far away, and with your back to me?” Chi Nian glanced at Zhang Yuning.
Zhang Yuning turned slightly, taking a small step to the side without a word. Chi Nian chuckled softly, her gaze sweeping around.
When the elevator reached the 12th floor, it suddenly jolted to a stop, then plummeted before halting again.
“Xiao Zhang!” Chi Nian rarely showed fear, but Zhang Yuning stepped forward in an instant, bracing an arm protectively in front of
her. “Don’t panic, it’s fine! Probably just a minor glitch.”
Chi Nian wrapped both arms around Zhang Yuning’s, clinging tightly as if afraid she’d vanish the moment she let go.
Zhang Yuning looked at her and was abruptly reminded of last night’s dream. That deep, lingering kiss. A peculiar warmth surged in
her chest, flickering like a flame threatening to ignite. She forced it down, smothering it with sheer will.
