Chapter 2: A Joke
Qi Yaoyao flushed with anger and embarrassment: “You!!”
Xu Zhi didn’t want to cause trouble and was about to rephrase.
Just then, Jim hurried over. When he saw the tense, confrontational scene, he was terrified and immediately tried to mediate: “Why is everyone standing outside…”
Xu Zhi didn’t answer. Seeing a pen and paper in the breast pocket of his uniform, she reached out, took them, and started writing.
Qi Yaoyao watched her smooth, self-important series of movements, her face turning red with fury, her cheeks puffed out.
She secretly gritted her teeth, vowing that if the other party dared to hand over that slip of paper to humiliate her, she would immediately swat it away with full force!
Xu Zhi quickly finished writing, tore off the note, and folded it twice.
Her gaze lightly swept over the haughty young lady in front of her, who looked like a puffed-up little goldfish.
Xu Zhi held the note between two fingers, offering it to her, but only gave it a slight shake, then turned and handed it to the slightly chubby girl who was trying to mediate.
Qi Yaoyao, who was poised and ready to slap her hand away, didn’t expect the person to only feint. Her eyes widened even more—Damn! Is this person still playing tricks on her?!
Qi Yaoyao was absolutely fuming!
Julie was surprised and flattered. She quickly took the note and looked up at Xu Zhi.
Xu Zhi’s gaze, however, was fixed again on the Birthday Girl, who was clearly on the verge of “explosion.”
Xu Zhi slightly raised an eyebrow and deliberately told her, “Just kidding. You’re not my type.”
She then turned and left without delay.
This time, no one stopped her again.
Everyone was rushing to check on Qi Yaoyao’s state.
Jim was drenched in sweat, inwardly shouting, Know, you are my ancestor. I must have lost my mind to ask you to deliver the drinks for me.
He smiled apologetically, handling the tricky mess: “Guests, this…”
Qi Yaoyao was so infuriated by the teasing and trickery that her mind went blank. When she recovered, she gritted her teeth and stamped her foot, just about to give that server a piece of her mind, only to find the person was long gone.
With a belly full of unreleased anger, Qi Yaoyao stomped her foot, threw her hands up, and wailed angrily, “Oh my god, I’m so mad, I’m so mad!”
The girls around rushed over to comfort her, saying it was her birthday tonight, she was the most important, and she shouldn’t let such a small matter ruin her mood.
Qi Yaoyao retorted, “A small matter?”
Qi Yaoyao felt she had never suffered such humiliation or lost face so badly in her entire life.
Especially not in front of so many good friends and sisters.
Qi Yaoyao became irritable and turned to glare angrily at Julie.
Julie, knowing she had made a mistake, took a step back with a guilty conscience.
Everyone immediately shifted their attention and began criticizing Julie’s poor taste.
They knew Julie’s sexual orientation, but even liking girls shouldn’t mean she was so desperate as to fancy a server working in a bar, right?
Why did she have to hit on everyone?
What Qi Yaoyao cared about wasn’t that. Her gaze dropped to the note in Julie’s hand.
Qi Yaoyao angrily held out her hand. “Give it to me.”
Julie, with a hint of hesitation, handed the slip of paper with the contact information to her.
Qi Yaoyao angrily tore it open, inwardly gritting her teeth. You want to give me your contact info, huh? I’m not your type, huh?
I will definitely make you pay!
However, when she unfolded the note, she saw that it didn’t contain a phone number or a name, but a sentence—
“I didn’t mean to offend. I truly don’t remember my WeChat ID. Happy Birthday, little Birthday Star.”
Qi Yaoyao was stunned.
Judging by the latter half of the sentence, this note was clearly not written for Julie, but was intended for her from the start.
So why did she deliberately hand it to Julie?
Did she guess that she would definitely slap her hand away?
The corridor outside the private room was a bit dim. Someone nearby noticed the paper didn’t have a string of numbers on it and leaned in to look. “Oh, Yaoyao, what does it say?”
Others heard this and also became curious.
Qi Yaoyao didn’t know why, but she immediately crumpled the note into a ball, not letting them see it.
Qi Yaoyao thought to herself: Don’t think this matter will just pass because you wrote such a meaningless sentence!
Her beautiful eyes, brightened and rounded by anger, turned to glare at the trembling server, Jim. “What was that person’s name? I want to file a complaint against her!”
Jim nervously smiled and apologized under pressure. “She’s our bar’s new bartender. Guest, please calm down. She’s never been to the private rooms before, so she doesn’t know the rules. I apologize on her behalf. How about this, all your drinks tonight are on the house, and I’ll send up a large fruit platter…”
Someone nearby angrily interjected, “Who cares about your free drinks? Which eye of yours saw that we don’t have money? Our good mood was completely ruined by her on such an important day. How will you compensate for that?”
Jim was sweating profusely. “Yes, yes, this is indeed our fault…”
Another person cut in: “Stop talking nonsense! Quickly call your bar manager here!”
Julie, seeing that her friends were getting a little worked up, advised, “Why don’t we just let it go for now? We still have to celebrate Yaoyao’s birthday. It’s not worth ruining the whole night over this…”
“That’s true,” someone immediately agreed.
“We’ll celebrate the birthday first, and then we’ll complain about her…”
Xu Zhi didn’t know she had temporarily escaped trouble. She went back to the changing room, changed her clothes, grabbed her backpack, and immediately left through the bar’s back door.
She unlocked her bicycle.
She sped away.
Neon lights flashed, and the night air was hot and humid.
Xu Zhi was in a hurry to get home, ringing her bike bell all the way, not thinking much about anything else.
Despite rushing, she still arrived home past nine o’clock.
Xu Zhi stood outside her door, pulled up her shirt, and sniffed it.
Although she changed into a uniform for work, she inevitably had some smell of alcohol and smoke on her.
This shouldn’t be the scent of someone who tutors middle school students…
Yes.
Xu Zhi hadn’t told her mother that she had lost her tutoring job.
Xu Zhi had always intended to find a new one and secretly take it up, but the timing was too awkward now. Almost everyone who needed a tutor already had one, and those who didn’t wouldn’t hire one when the semester was nearly over.
She could only temporarily remain working part-time at the bar.
Xu Zhi mentally prepared two sets of explanations, confirmed there were no loopholes, then gently took a breath, found her key, and opened the door.
Surprisingly, the house was dark; her mother hadn’t finished work yet!
Xu Zhi quickly turned on the lights, changed her shoes, closed the door, and put the cold meal into the microwave, all in one smooth motion.
Zhou Weixiang returned home at 9:20 PM. Seeing the light on in her daughter’s room, she put down her bag and said as she changed her shoes, “Zhizhi, Mom is home.”
Xu Zhi’s reply came from the room—”Okay~”
After greeting her, Zhou Weixiang went into her own room for a quick shower, then started preparing for her lessons.
At ten o’clock, the alarm clock rang.
Zhou Weixiang, who was busy working at her desk, snapped back to reality, stretched, massaged her slightly sore shoulder, turned off the alarm, got up to heat milk in the kitchen, and then knocked on her daughter’s bedroom door.
Xu Zhi was still working on practice questions. She turned her head, saw her mother, and smiled obediently. “Mom.”
Zhou Weixiang smiled too.
Xu Zhi’s features were somewhat similar to her mother’s, but not entirely.
Zhou Weixiang had a round face, delicate features, and a gentle temperament. She didn’t look her age in her thirties, probably because she worked in education; her smile had a soft, approachable quality like water.
Xu Zhi, however, had an oval face, thin lips, and a straight nose, with more refined features.
Zhou Weixiang always said it was because she resembled her father more.
Actually, when she smiled, the resemblance was very strong.
It was just that Xu Zhi didn’t smile often, so she usually looked cool and detached, and her eyes always gave an air of aloofness.
Zhou Weixiang walked behind her daughter to look at the math paper she was almost finished with, handed her the hot milk, and asked, “Is there anything you don’t understand?”
Xu Zhi took the milk, letting her mother look, and said, “No, none of it is too difficult.”
Zhou Weixiang smiled. “That’s good. Don’t stay up too late. Drink your milk and go to bed early.”
“Mm. Goodnight, Mom.”
“Goodnight, Zhizhi.”
After watching her mother leave, Xu Zhi organized the several test papers and textbooks on her desk and put them into her school bag. Then she drank the milk in one go and got up to wash up.
After washing, she got into bed, turned off the light, and went to sleep.
Just as she was falling asleep, a commanding sentence suddenly rang in her ears—
“Stop!”
Xu Zhi immediately opened her eyes. In the darkness, the image of those beautiful, captivating, and arrogant eyes, and the flash of that slender, pale waist when the girl was sprawling on the sofa, suddenly appeared in her mind.
Xu Zhi frowned, turned over, and closed her eyes again.
This time, she quickly fell asleep successfully.
Xu Zhi was asleep.
Qi Yaoyao, who had just returned home after celebrating her birthday with her friends, was still full of unvented anger.
The marble floor on the first floor echoed loudly as she stomped her feet in frustration.
Turning the corner to go upstairs, she saw someone standing outside her mother’s study door.
Qi Yaoyao was startled. She focused and recognized the person as her mother’s assistant.
The assistant signaled “shush” with a finger.
But the next moment, the study door behind her opened, and a woman walked out of the room. She was wearing a white women’s suit, with an efficient and serious demeanor, and her makeup was flawless and meticulous.
Qi Yaoyao instantly became timid, burped from the alcohol, and said, “M-Mom, why are you home today…”
“Temporary business trip, I came back for a quick stop,” Qi Nan scanned her daughter up and down. “Where were you playing?”
Qi Yaoyao fiddled with her skirt and whispered, “Lili and the others were celebrating my birthday tonight…”
Qi Nan raised an eyebrow. “Your birthday?”
“It’s my lunar birthday.” The family had hosted a birthday banquet last month, so Qi Yaoyao quickly explained, “They said you’re not truly an adult until you’ve celebrated your lunar birthday.”
Qi Nan looked at the redness on her daughter’s cheeks, the smell of alcohol when she spoke, and the small, constant fidgeting with her skirt hem, then withdrew her gaze. “I’m going to the States and will be back in about half a month.”
Qi Yaoyao obediently said, “Okay, Mom. Have a safe trip, and good luck with your project~”
Qi Yaoyao was slightly sobered up and calmed down by the scare from her mother, but the anger surged back when she was soaking in a fragrant hot bath in the tub.
She unfolded the crumpled note.
Her friends all said the bar was fun, but it wasn’t fun at all today. She ran into such a ill-mannered, annoying person right away!
Such a mood killer!
Julie said the person was good-looking, but how was she good-looking?
The lighting was so dark, how could anyone see clearly? Maybe she was an ugly person covered in freckles and acne?!
But speaking of which, the handwriting wasn’t ugly…
The font was tall and thin, with strong, vigorous strokes, showing a certain unyielding strength.
“Happy Birthday, little Birthday Star…” Qi Yaoyao’s eyes, still slightly hazy from the alcohol, unconsciously read the words aloud, then pouted, displeased: “Why did she have to add the word ‘little’?”
Qi Yaoyao looked down at her chest.
Little?
Not only was it not little, but it was overdeveloped!
