- My 'White Moonlight' First Love Came Back, but I Don't Love her Anymore
- Chapter 5 - "Yanyan, how about I stay home with you for the next few days?"
Early the next morning, Zhou Wanyan was awakened by the ringing of her phone. She answered it, her gaze sweeping across the empty space beside her.
“So, how are you? Are you alright?” a voice asked concernedly from the other end.
“Gao Yao,” Wanyan replied, “it has been a whole day. Don’t you think you are checking in a bit too early?”
“Hey, hey! You were so drunk that night. It was thanks to me that you made it home. You should be thanking me.”
A smile touched Wanyan’s eyes. “I thank you.”
“By the way, after you woke up, did your wife sanction you?”
In the brief moment of silence that followed, Gao Yao had already guessed the outcome.
“No.”
“No?” Gao Yao curled her lip, clearly unconvinced. “Just keep being stubborn.”
Gao Yao had been sober that night, and the way Yan Jiuqing looked at her made her feel like she was about to be devoured. Despite having a harmless face, that woman’s gaze was quite terrifying.
Wanyan’s tone remained steady. “You called at this hour; you must have something else to say.”
On the other end, Gao Yao exchanged a look with Luo Yuening, who was sitting on the sofa across from her. “Did you see the trending topics yesterday?” she asked, adding quickly, “The ones about Luo Yuening.”
The headlines flashed through Wanyan’s mind. “I saw them,” she answered honestly.
After a few seconds of silence, Gao Yao was surprised that Wanyan didn’t elaborate. “And? What do you plan to do?”
Wanyan was confused. “What do you mean ‘what do I plan to do’? I do not understand what you are talking about.”
“Luo Yuening! The trending news!” Gao Yao emphasized the key words.
Wanyan’s brow furrowed slightly, like a faint ripple on a calm lake. “What does her trending news have to do with me? You should ask her how she manages her time. She is so busy with work, yet she seems to have quite a few partners.”
Gao Yao scrambled to cover the phone’s speaker, but she was a step too late. The woman on the sofa had heard everything. Luo Yuening’s cheeks flushed with anger, and her chest heaved.
She understood the underlying meaning; Wanyan was calling her a “time management master.” Zhou Wanyan, you are truly something! After all these years, your tongue is still as poisonous as ever.
Gao Yao realized that Wanyan likely hadn’t recognized herself in the video, which was admittedly quite blurry. She asked tentatively, “Are you not afraid she will hear you say that?”
Wanyan remained silent.
After hanging up, Wanyan turned around to see Yan Jiuqing leaning against the doorway, looking listless. Her soft voice carried a hint of grievance. “Yanyan, who were you talking to for so long?”
Surprise and joy flickered in Wanyan’s eyes. “I thought you were not home.” She then explained, “It was Gao Yao.”
“Oh.” Yan Jiuqing gave a light huff. She sat on the other side of the bed, turning her back to Wanyan in a display of feigned anger. “Why did you not come out of the bedroom to look for me? I even made breakfast because I was afraid you would be hungry.”
Wanyan walked quietly to her side and sat down, their shoulders pressing together. She looked at Jiuqing’s profile with a gentle gaze. “Do not be angry, Jiuqing. Next time, I will look for you the moment I wake up.”
Jiuqing turned her head. “If you kiss me, I will forgive you.”
Wanyan lowered her eyes as their gazes met, momentarily returning to a state of tender affection. A flash of panic crossed Jiuqing’s eyes. “Yanyan, how about I stay home with you for the next few days?”
As she spoke, she reached out and hooked her arms around Wanyan’s neck, pressing her lips against the corner of Wanyan’s mouth. It was a fleeting touch, like a breeze across the lips, yet the mark left in the air seemed to be trying to prove something.
“Yanyan, the porridge is ready.”
On the other side, Gao Yao shook her head with a laugh and immediately snatched a plush toy back from Luo Yuening’s hands. “My goddess gave this to me; do not ruin it.”
Luo Yuening stared at Gao Yao with an expressionless face, her lips pulled into a frown.
Gao Yao pursed her lips and offered some comfort. “Is it not a good thing she did not recognize you? You do not have to worry about it affecting her.”
Luo Yuening lowered her head, the color fading from her eyes. A sudden sense of loss welled up within her, a feeling that tugged at her heart and refused to settle.
“Did something happen between you two back then?” Gao Yao asked. “Why did you delete her?”
“Did she tell you that?” Luo Yuening asked.
“Yes. I actually wanted to ask her why she…” Luo Yuening stopped herself abruptly. Under Gao Yao’s expectant gaze, she chose to remain silent, slowly smoothing her stray hairs.
Gao Yao scoffed. “Luo Yuening, just keep being stubborn. Between you and Zhou Wanyan, one is incredibly prideful while the other is far too soft. Neither of you knows how to use your words. Honestly, stop thinking about being friends with her again. You two are not suited for it. I will just make sure to drink a lot at her wedding.”
The image Gao Yao conjured caused Luo Yuening’s face to turn cold instantly. Her red lips pressed into a tight line, and the air around her seemed to freeze. As she thought about it, the corners of her eyes turned red, giving her a strikingly beautiful yet sorrowful look.
Despite this, she refused to back down. “Who cares?” she said stubbornly. “I will definitely get married before she does.” With that, she stood up abruptly and left.
The sound of her heels clicking against the floor echoed through the room. Though her figure was graceful, her pace was slightly frantic.
“Where are you going?” Gao Yao called out.
“To find someone to marry!”
“…”
As night fell, the indoor temperature stayed at a comfortable 24 degrees. Zhou Wanyan lay on the sofa with Yan Jiuqing nestled in her arms, whose fingers were flying across a phone screen. It was a picture of perfect tranquility.
Finally, the “defeat” sound effect played, and Jiuqing set her phone down. Looking dejected, she buried her face in Wanyan’s chest, her hands moving mischievously against Wanyan’s waist.
Wanyan’s lips curled into a smile. She caught Jiuqing’s hands and whispered, “Now that the game is over, can we go eat?”
Jiuqing looked up, her dark hair slightly messy and partially veiling her eyes. In the dim light, her gaze was hazy and mysterious. Clearly, she had a different idea. She leaned in closer, her lips brushing against Wanyan’s jaw.
“Can I eat you instead?” she whispered in a seductive, sweet tone that sent a tremor through Wanyan’s heart.
Wanyan involuntarily held her breath, her mind consumed by Jiuqing’s every move. It felt as if their relationship had returned to its early days, as if the unpleasantness of the past weeks had never occurred. Wanyan’s naturally shy temperament left her unable to easily handle Jiuqing’s flirtatious words.
Jiuqing took Wanyan’s hand and interlaced their fingers, the heat from their palms surging through both of them. “Or you can eat me,” she added.
At those words, Wanyan’s ability to think vanished entirely. Her hand remained on Jiuqing’s waist as she said softly, “Let’s eat dinner first, or your body will not be able to handle it.”
Jiuqing’s face flushed like a budding flower. She gave Wanyan a shy look before quickly looking away. “Fine, I will listen to you.”
They sat across from each other at the dining table. Looking at the dishes, Jiuqing praised her enthusiastically. “Wow, Yanyan, you made all my favorites.”
“Eat as much as you like. You have lost weight because the company has been so busy.”
Jiuqing’s hand paused for a moment before returning to normal. Only she knew whether the company was actually busy. A sudden wave of guilt washed over her, causing her appetite to vanish.
Wanyan, being perceptive, immediately caught the shift in her mood. “What is wrong, Jiuqing?”
Jiuqing snapped back to reality. “Oh? Nothing. You just mentioned the company, and I remembered a project that hasn’t been finalized yet. I need to check with Lin Na later.”
Wanyan nodded and didn’t press further. Yan Jiuqing had always managed the company affairs, and Wanyan was not very familiar with that side of things.
“By the way,” Jiuqing added, “Yue Qi’s concert is tomorrow. I had Lin Na get two tickets in advance. Let’s go together.”
“I will do whatever you want.”
Jiuqing’s eyes crinkled with a smile. “I knew you were the best.”
Wanyan could not help but smile back. She had become more reserved as she grew older, and that quiet affection was on full display.
