- My 'White Moonlight' First Love Came Back, but I Don't Love her Anymore
- Chapter 4 - Zhou Wanyan, Do You Even Have a Heart?
“My little ancestor, you truly know how to keep me busy.”
“Manager Li, don’t get so worked up. Take a deep breath.” He Jia hurriedly tried to soothe Li Wen, who was currently fuming.
Luo Yuening chimed in casually, “I have plenty of scandals; one more won’t make a difference. Besides, the fake can never become real. Just find a reason to issue a clarification and be done with it.”
“The problem is you have a drama about to air, and you need to cooperate with the CP marketing,” Li Wen argued, her brow furrowed with worry. “What will that side think?”
Luo Yuening didn’t care in the slightest. “I don’t give a damn what they think.”
He Jia put an arm around Li Wen’s shoulder and smiled. “Manager Li, it’s already happened. You have to trust our PR team. Don’t worry too much.”
Li Wen’s frown deepened. “And what about your mother? How do you plan to explain this to her?”
Luo Yuening remained indifferent. Dressed in a flamboyant, beautiful red dress, she looked like a stunning rose covered in thorns. “She can think whatever she wants.”
Li Wen was speechless. He Jia, on the other hand, looked on with admiration. “Sister Luo, now that is what I call spirit.”
Luo Yuening then seemed to remember something and placed a direct call to Lin Qi. “Give me her new phone number.”
A moment later, a familiar set of digits was read out over the phone. Luo Yuening’s eyelashes fluttered, and a complex look entered her eyes.
She had never changed her number. Then why had Luo Yuening never been able to get through?
By the time Zhou Wanyan woke up again, the sun had already set. She left the bedroom to find the house empty. A wave of loneliness washed over her; she was someone who truly feared being alone.
Wanyan checked her phone. Yan Jiuqing had sent a barrage of interrogative messages that left her feeling incredibly frustrated. When you have explained yourself too many times, you eventually lose the desire to explain at all.
She logged into her secondary social media account and opened Weibo. The trending topic sat high on the list: Luo Yuening suspected of spending a wonderful night with a non-celebrity girlfriend!
Her finger paused for a second before she exited the app and turned off her screen. At that moment, the click of the door signaled someone’s arrival. A tall woman walked in. Wanyan didn’t need to look to know who it was.
Yan Jiuqing walked straight toward her, reeking of alcohol. Wanyan’s brow knitted together. During the days when Yan Jiuqing went to Shangxitang to dance, she would come home smelling of booze every night, acting cute and demanding that Wanyan carry her to the bathroom to wash up.
Wanyan looked at the unsteady woman before her with an expressionless face and turned to leave. However, she was pulled back by a sudden, forceful grip. She couldn’t understand how someone so drunk could possess such strength.
Yan Jiuqing wrapped her arms around Wanyan’s waist. Her eyes were rimmed with red, and though her voice sounded weak, her words were sharp and accusatory. “Zhou Wanyan, do you even have a heart? I am drunk, and your first reaction is to turn around and walk away?”
Wanyan replied flatly, “We have broken up.”
“I do not agree!” Yan Jiuqing’s voice trembled as her grip tightened. Her eyes were filled with anxiety and panic, and tears began to stream down her face. “Yanyan, we are going to get married. You promised me we would have children together. I will give you a child, okay? Just don’t leave me. Do not break up with me.”
“I am begging you, Yanyan. I really cannot live without you. I will never mention Luo Yuening again. You can be friends with whoever you want; I will not force you anymore.”
Every word Yan Jiuqing spoke seemed like a concession, yet they were merely the bars of a cage meant to trap Wanyan. She knew exactly how to manipulate Wanyan’s soft-hearted nature. She felt she could do whatever she wanted because she could always play the victim later, knowing Wanyan would inevitably feel pity for her.
She was right. Wanyan’s judgment faltered once again under the weight of those disorganized, desperate pleas. It is often the case that even when you are determined to leave, a partner lowering their pride, reminiscing about the good times, and promising a better future can subconsciously pull you back into giving them another chance. Unfortunately, that chance often becomes the key to repeating the same toxic cycle.
Wanyan stared into Yan Jiuqing’s eyes, watching for any subtle shift in expression. “Jiuqing, do you really think we are right for each other?”
“Of course we are right for each other.” The confidence in Jiuqing’s voice flickered for a moment, but she forced herself to maintain the facade. “Yanyan, we have been together for six years. If we were not right for each other, how could we have stayed together this long? I know a lot has happened lately, but fighting is just fighting. We just need to talk things through.”
“Jiuqing, every time there is a problem, you choose to run away to a friend’s house. The next day, you act as if nothing happened. You know exactly what is going on, yet you pretend to be oblivious. Is it only when things become unavoidable that you finally choose to face them?”
A surge of irritation rose within Yan Jiuqing. She had already lowered herself to coax Wanyan and was even willing to pretend she didn’t know about the secret meeting with Luo Yuening. What more did Wanyan want?
Restraining her temper, Jiuqing continued patiently, “Yanyan, I just did not know how to talk to you. I do not want to argue because I feel it damages our relationship. I just thought we both needed to calm down.” Her voice softened, carrying a slight tremor. “I did not know it would hurt you so deeply. I swear I will never run away again. I am sorry, Yanyan.”
After a long silence, the confrontation ended with Wanyan’s compromise. “Jiuqing… I will trust you one last time.”
A flash of triumphant joy crossed Yan Jiuqing’s eyes. It was as if she were thinking, See? As long as I act soft, she will never leave.
“Yanyan, can you help me bathe? I have no strength left.”
Wanyan sighed softly. “Stop drinking so much. It is not good for your health.”
Jiuqing muttered under her breath, “It is your fault. If you had not mentioned breaking up, I would not have drunk so much.”
Wanyan remained silent.
Late that night, the two lay flat in bed with the space of a whole person between them. Yan Jiuqing turned onto her side, her gaze falling on Wanyan’s smooth profile. Wanyan’s high nose and beautiful features complemented each other perfectly. Even after all this time, looking at this face still made Jiuqing’s heart flutter.
“Yanyan, what are you thinking about?”
“Nothing.”
Wanyan’s wandering thoughts slowly returned to the present. The lukewarm response made Yan Jiuqing feel slightly annoyed.
“Yanyan, did we not clear everything up?” Her tone carried a hint of impatience.
A faint melancholy lingered in Wanyan’s brow. she could hear and see that Jiuqing’s patience was wearing thin. Yet every time she thought about leaving, beautiful memories from deep within her heart would resurface like a movie, pulling at her and making her forget the pain she had suffered.
She felt forced to change the subject. “I am sorry. I was just thinking about some work.”
Jiuqing pursed her lips. “Fine. But when you are thinking, can you at least hold me?” She pretended to be aggrieved. “You have not held me while sleeping in such a long time.”
Before she even finished speaking, Jiuqing had already nestled into Wanyan’s arms. The faint, fresh scent of shampoo filled the air. Jiuqing rested her head on Wanyan’s arm, her dark hair brushing against Wanyan’s neck.
“Yanyan, I love you,” she said.
Wanyan was momentarily dazed, but she simply held the woman in her arms a little tighter.
