- My 'White Moonlight' First Love Came Back, but I Don't Love her Anymore
- Chapter 3 - Zhou Wanyan, You Were the One Who Betrayed Me First!
“Don’t look at me; I couldn’t stop her.” Gao Yao immediately distanced herself, fearing she would be caught in the crossfire. She knew exactly what kind of temperament Luo Yuening possessed.
Luo Yuening gave a cold snort. She tilted her chin up slightly, her sharp eyes flashing with a chilling light. “What did you talk to her about?”
Gao Yao stood up, answering vaguely, “Actually, we didn’t talk about much.”
“Speak!” Luo Yuening commanded.
Gao Yao finally answered honestly, “We talked about why the two of you fell out back then.”
Luo Yuening shot her a look before sitting down beside Zhou Wanyan. “Stop gossiping. You can leave now.”
“Luo Yuening, you’re unbelievable. You really do prioritize romance over friendship.” With that, the door to the private room closed.
Six years had passed since their last meeting. One was sober while the other was unconscious. The sober woman felt a deep stir in her heart the moment she saw the one she longed for. The dim lighting seemed to act as a shroud, hiding the true feelings that Luo Yuening could not allow others to see.
The distance between them felt like a vast chasm. Luo Yuening did not move, but when her sharp gaze settled on Zhou Wanyan, it softened, appearing like a gentle breeze rippling across a lake. She had come tonight specifically to see her; now that Wanyan was asleep, all her careful grooming felt like a waste.
Yet, she changed her mind; just looking at her like this was enough. But Zhou Wanyan, are you truly happy?
The next morning, a sliver of warm sunlight filtered through the gaps in the curtains, illuminating Zhou Wanyan’s profile. She sat up slowly and scanned her surroundings, realizing she was home. Recalling the previous night, she realized she had blacked out.
Her throat felt parched. She got up and went to the living room to pour herself a glass of water.
“Yanyan, where were you last night?”
Wanyan looked toward the voice and found Yan Jiuqing sitting on the sofa. Jiuqing’s gaze was calm but heavy, as if she were a judge preparing to interrogate a criminal.
Wanyan’s voice was raspy from the alcohol. “You were home last night?”
“Are you surprised that I was home?”
“No,” Wanyan replied.
Yan Jiuqing stood up and approached her, scanning her from head to toe. Wanyan’s brow furrowed; she detested being scrutinized this way.
After finishing her inspection, Yan Jiuqing asked coldly, “Who was the woman who brought you back?”
“Her name is Gao Yao. She is a high school classmate.”
“How come I have never heard you mention her before?”
“She went abroad right after the college entrance exams.”
“So you didn’t feel the need to tell me?”
“I…”
Yan Jiuqing’s persistent pressure made Wanyan feel a mounting sense of stress. Suddenly, Jiuqing’s expression shifted. She took the glass from Wanyan’s hand, pressed herself into Wanyan’s embrace, and wrapped her arms around her neck.
“Yanyan, you know I have been insecure since I was a child,” she whispered. “You went out drinking without telling me, and you were brought home drunk by a strange woman. Do you know how I felt? You were not like this before.”
Wanyan stood stiffly, her mind a whirlwind of unspoken thoughts. “I am sorry. I will tell you in advance wherever I go from now on.”
Satisfied with the answer she wanted, Yan Jiuqing pulled back. “Then as a punishment, you are not allowed to leave the house today. Stay here and spend the day with me, okay?”
Wanyan’s voice was flat. “I can do that, but can you stay home for the whole day?”
Jiuqing’s eyes narrowed, a flash of displeasure crossing her face. “Yanyan, are you trying to provoke me?”
“No.”
A brief, heavy silence followed. Yan Jiuqing took Wanyan’s hand and led her to the sofa. She then straddled Wanyan’s lap and said softly, “Yanyan, why have you become so cold to me after going out with that classmate?”
Wanyan looked down at her, a complex mix of emotions hidden in her eyes. “Jiuqing, are you being too sensitive?”
“Yanyan, you are actually calling me sensitive because of her?” Jiuqing said, sounding aggrieved.
“It is not because of her. Can we just keep what happens between us away from other people?”
Yan Jiuqing let out a cold laugh and climbed off Wanyan’s lap. “I just do not want our relationship to get complicated because of outsiders. Why can’t you understand me? First there was Luo Yuening, and now there is Gao Yao. Zhou Wanyan, can you not keep your social circle clean?”
The words hit Wanyan like sharp thorns. She froze. “Why do you always suspect me? They are just my friends.”
As if she had finally caught Wanyan in a trap, Jiuqing’s voice became agitated. “You finally admit it! You still consider Luo Yuening a friend! She deleted you without a word back then, yet you are still defending her. How pathetic can you be?”
When the word “pathetic” was thrown at her, Wanyan’s self-esteem shattered, and her heart plunged into an abyss.
“Yan Jiuqing, when did you become like this?” she asked.
“I became like this because you pushed me!”
“How did I…”
“Let’s both just calm down,” Jiuqing interrupted. “I am going to stay at a friend’s house.”
She stormed out, leaving Wanyan alone to deal with the pain of the argument. A surge of frustration was trapped in Wanyan’s chest. She felt as if she were going insane. Was it really this hard just to have a home?
In the early hours of the morning, Wanyan tossed and turned in bed. She picked up her phone, stared at Yan Jiuqing’s profile, and decided to send what was on her mind.
[Our problems have not been solved. Can we please sit down and talk properly?] [How did I push you?] [Every time we fight, nothing gets resolved. I feel like the conflict between us is growing.]
[Can you please stop leaving every time we argue?]
[I am really tired of this.] [Yan Jiuqing.]
At that moment, Yan Jiuqing was busy in bed and had no time to care.
Xia He glanced at the glowing screen of Jiuqing’s phone. She picked it up with one hand, read the messages, and continued her rhythmic movements with the other. She held the screen up for Jiuqing to see. “Qingqing, your wife sent you messages. Are you not going to reply?”
Jiuqing glanced at the screen. Her body tensed, and she said coldly, “Take it away.”
Xia He understood. She turned off the screen, tossed the phone aside, and continued to serve her benefactor. “Qingqing, did you fight with her?”
“Yes.”
“She really does not know how lucky she is. Someone as wonderful as you, Qingqing; other people would die to have you. And yet she makes you angry.”
“Shut up. If you do not satisfy me today, you can get lost.”
Xia He went silent immediately.
The next day, the first thing Wanyan did upon waking was check her phone. As expected, her messages were like stones dropped into the ocean. There was no reply.
Their six-year relationship was hanging by a thread. With no one to talk to and nowhere to vent, she had to digest all her emotions alone. Her heart, worn down by repeated disappointments, had long since lost its hope for the future.
The screen lit up again.
[Yan Jiuqing, let’s talk.]
This time, the reply came quickly.
[What is there to talk about?] [Can you stop making a mountain out of a molehill every time?] [Yanyan, promise me you will cut off contact with them from now on, and we can be happy together, okay?]
Wanyan was so angry she laughed.
[Let’s break up.]
She threw her phone aside and lay flat on the bed, ignoring the frantic vibrations that followed.
[Zhou Wanyan, say that again!] [It seems your friends will always be more important than me.] [Have you wanted to leave for a long time? You are breaking up with me over your friends!] [Zhou Wanyan, have you rekindled things with Luo Yuening?]
Xia He watched Yan Jiuqing fuming at her phone from across the sofa and curled her lip privately. “Qingqing, do not let it ruin your health. What happened?”
Yan Jiuqing’s dark hair was a mess from her pacing. Her usually harmless appearance was now replaced with raw hostility. “Zhou Wanyan wants to break up with me! How does she dare? I provided her with everything; she wrote songs when she felt like it and did not when she did not. She took her share of the company profits every year, and now she wants to leave?”
“She gave her new song to Luo Yuening to sing, then lied to me saying they are not in contact. Does she think I am an idiot?”
Xia He sat there awkwardly, wishing she had not asked. Just then, her phone screen showed the latest trending topics on Weibo.
- [Luo Yuening suspected of spending a wonderful night with a non-celebrity girlfriend!]
- [Luo Yuening’s new romance!]
- [Luo Yuening’s mystery girlfriend exposed!]
Thinking she could distract Jiuqing, Xia He said, “Qingqing, look at this. It says Luo Yuening’s secret girlfriend has been exposed.”
Luo Yuening?
Yan Jiuqing took the phone, a cold smirk on her face as she scrolled through the trending news. She “liked” several comments bashing Luo Yuening until her pupils contracted sharply. A cold light filled her eyes, and she hurled the phone in a perfect arc across the room.
“My phone!” Xia He cried.
Yan Jiuqing’s chest heaved violently. The person Luo Yuening was supporting in the video was Zhou Wanyan!
Even without a clear shot of her face, she could recognize Wanyan by her silhouette alone. So that is why she defended Luo Yuening so much. They were in contact behind my back all along. Maybe they have already betrayed me.
No wonder she suddenly brought up a breakup. She already found someone to replace me.
“Zhou Wanyan, you were the one who betrayed me first!”
