Chapter 2: “Sister, can you tell me about my mother?”
Qi Ying yawned as she walked downstairs. After brewing a cup of coffee, she sat at her desk and began reviewing the custom requests from yesterday’s clients. The visitors last night had been a newly engaged couple looking for a heavy-duty, elaborate wedding gown. After chatting with the bride and sending over some reference images, they had settled on a tentative style. Today, Qi Ying planned to create a mock-up for the bride to inspect.
Once her coffee was finished, Qi Ying pulled out a measuring tape and prepared to get to work.
The studio she rented had two floors. The first floor was the workspace, with a front window for displays and her design studio in the back. The second floor was a small loft, about half the size of the first floor, which served as her living quarters. It was efficient—she could sleep upstairs, head down to work as soon as she woke up, and keep an eye on the shop all at once.
Qi Ying selected a piece of wood-pulp kraft paper to start the pattern. The bride wanted something unique yet bold, so Qi Ying decided on a combination of crystals and fresh flowers, paired with a long, sweeping train for a grand, luxurious finish.
Just as she was in the heat of sketching, her phone beside her chimed with a ding.
She picked it up and saw a game notification.
[Hello, Dear Designer! Your Xing Xiaochu is ready to be discharged from the hospital. Shouldn’t you bring a bouquet of fresh flowers to visit her?]
Qi Ying paused, remembering the game world she had inexplicably entered the night before. She had saved a little Omega, and now the system was reminding her that the girl was leaving the hospital.
I suppose I really should go see her, she thought.
Glancing at her nearly finished sketches, she decided it was a good time for a break.
…
When Qi Ying reappeared at the hospital, she was holding a bouquet of lilies. They were fresh, smelling of a faint, sweet fragrance, with dew clinging to the snow-white petals.
She carried the flowers to Xiaochu’s room. Pushing the door open, she saw the girl with her back to her, neatly folding her blanket. She was still wearing the same clothes from yesterday.
“Why are you back in those clothes?” Qi Ying asked from the doorway. “Are they even dry?”
Xiaochu spun around, startled. She hurriedly finished folding the blanket and set it aside, her beautiful eyes fixed on Qi Ying as she nervously fumbled with the hem of her shirt.
“They… they’re dry,” Xiaochu whispered. “I woke up yesterday and asked the nurse if I could use the laundry room. They dried overnight.”
She looked at Qi Ying, her face flushing with nerves. “Thank you for yesterday.”
Qi Ying smiled. “You’re very welcome.”
She walked over and handed the flowers to Xiaochu, her voice softening. “These are for you. You’re being discharged today, right?”
Xiaochu seemed stunned, as if it were her first time receiving flowers. She held the bouquet for a long moment before nodding. “Yes. The nurse is coming to get me for the paperwork soon.”
“I’ll handle the paperwork,” Qi Ying said. “Sit down and rest. Did you eat breakfast?”
Xiaochu gave a small shake of her head.
“I’ll go get you something.”
…
After buying a bottle of eight-treasure porridge and a pack of bread from a vending machine, Qi Ying returned to find Xiaochu still cradling the lilies. The girl was curiously poking a tender petal with her finger before leaning in to take a cautious sniff. A soft smile spread across her face.
Xiaochu’s skin was so pale that, for a moment, Qi Ying couldn’t tell which was more beautiful—the flowers or the girl. With her long black hair cleaned and brushed, she no longer looked like the bedraggled waif from the night before. Her delicate features gave her an air of pure innocence.
Currently, Xiaochu sat on the bed in her dress, the skirt covering her knees but leaving her slender, rounded calves exposed. The dress was slightly faded from washing, but it cinched perfectly around her remarkably thin waist.
Qi Ying’s hand involuntarily twitched—a professional habit. Seeing such a slender waist made her want to reach out and measure exactly how many inches it was.
Xiaochu noticed her first. “Sister?”
Timidly, Xiaochu called out, snapping Qi Ying out of her daze. Qi Ying walked in and set the breakfast on the bedside cabinet.
“Eat first,” Qi Ying said. “I’ll go take care of the discharge papers.”
…
The process wasn’t complicated. The nurse was patient, even escorting Qi Ying to the payment counter. While they waited, the nurse said with a smile, “You two make such a lovely couple. It’s rare to see an Alpha handling these kinds of errands.”
Qi Ying blinked. “Is it that unusual?”
“Quite,” the nurse replied. “Usually, Alphas find these trivialities beneath them. You’re very good to your girlfriend.”
Qi Ying smiled but didn’t correct her.
Even in her short time here, she had learned the social hierarchy: Alphas held absolute power, while Omegas occupied a low status, reminiscent of the bottom tier of a feudal society—often barred from working and expected only to bear children. Betas were the “worker bees,” maintaining the world for the other two.
Qi Ying shook her head. Good thing this is just a game.
Returning to the ward, she saw Xiaochu waiting by the door with her few belongings and the flowers. She was leaning against the white wall, staring blankly at the lilies. When Qi Ying called her name, Xiaochu’s eyes lit up, and she ran toward her.
She ran so fast she was slightly out of breath, her cheeks a lovely shade of pink.
“Why the rush? Do you have everything? Where do you want to go now?” Qi Ying asked, reaching out to gently pinch Xiaochu’s glowing cheek.
For some reason, the more Qi Ying rubbed, the redder the girl’s face became, until Xiaochu was practically glowing. Nearby, the nurses at the station were giggling.
Xiaochu’s skin was soft and warm, like a fresh, fluffy steamed bun. Fearing she might get addicted to the sensation, Qi Ying quickly let go, ignored the laughing nurses, and took Xiaochu’s hand to lead her out.
As they walked toward the elevator, Xiaochu opened her mouth as if to speak, but seeing their joined hands, she simply stayed quiet, her ears turning bright red.
This sister… is so strange.
…
At the hospital entrance, Qi Ying finally let go. She looked at the girl still clutching the flowers and asked, “Where do you live? I’ll take you home.”
Xiaochu’s face instantly drained of color.
Qi Ying frowned. “What? You don’t want to go home?”
If she went home, her father would sell her to that “Old Alpha” for a bride price. But if she didn’t go back, where could she go? She was homeless.
While Xiaochu remained silent, Qi Ying’s phone dinged. She pulled it out to see the app displaying a property contract.
[Hello, Dear Designer~] [To raise an outstanding Xing Xiaochu, you must provide a warm home. Her old home with a drunkard father is no longer an option, but luckily, she has you!] [The new home is ready. Take your Xiaochu to see it~]
Qi Ying tapped the contract. The address was a luxury flat worth 2 million yuan, and the signature was indeed her own.
It even gives me a house?
Qi Ying looked at Xiaochu and hesitated before saying, “If you don’t want to go back, come to my place.”
Xiaochu looked up, her voice weak. “Is that… really okay?”
“Yes.” Qi Ying hailed a taxi. “Let’s go. Come home with me.”
…
The new home was a high-end flat in the Second Ring Road district—one unit per floor with facial recognition entry.
It was Qi Ying’s first time there as well. Following the GPS, they reached the building. She had been worried about keys, but it turned out to be a fingerprint lock.
Door Unlocked—
The door opened to a luxuriously decorated apartment. The living room was spacious and bright; automatic appliances powered on as they entered, and the floor-to-ceiling curtains glided open to reveal a stunning city view.
Qi Ying was stunned. Seeing Xiaochu’s wide eyes, she couldn’t help but smile. “Come in. This is your home from now on.”
Xiaochu stood awkwardly at the entrance. Hearing Qi Ying’s words, she nodded and followed her inside.
While Xiaochu changed her shoes, Qi Ying explored. The flat had a master bedroom with a walk-in closet and en-suite, two guest rooms, a study, and a utility room. The closet was packed with clothes, jewelry, and bags—all in Qi Ying’s size.
What a magical game.
Returning to the living room, she saw Xiaochu still standing by the door clutching her lilies. “Sister?” the girl called out softly.
“Come here,” Qi Ying beckoned. “You’ll stay in the room next to mine. Look around and see if anything is missing. I’ll go buy what you need later.”
Xiaochu walked over and stared at the bedroom door. “The whole room… is for me? No one else lives here?”
“Of course. This is your bedroom. You’ll live here from now on.”
After showing her around, Qi Ying poured Xiaochu a cup of tea. They sat on the large, plush sofa. Qi Ying was thinking about logging out before lunch so she could finish her dress design.
Just then, Xiaochu spoke. She seemed to have been agonizing over the question for a long time. Her watery eyes searched Qi Ying’s face.
“Sister, you’re my mother’s friend… so, can you tell me more about her?”
Qi Ying: “…”
Crap. This is definitely outside my knowledge base.
