Chapter 19: “Student Xing Xiaochu has passed the entrance test.”
Initially, Qi Ying’s impression on Xing Xiaochu was that of a gentle and reliable Alpha. Although Qi Ying was a bit confused regarding AO physiological matters, Xing Xiaochu figured she had simply presented too late and missed the education phase, which was understandable.
Later, Xing Xiaochu assumed Qi Ying had an Omega she was dating or was already partnered with—someone intimate enough to leave a lingering scent on her.
But now, Xing Xiaochu had smelled the scent of a different Omega on Qi Ying.
Did this mean Qi Ying was cheating?
Xing Xiaochu’s pupils trembled slightly, but Qi Ying didn’t notice. She simply rubbed the girl’s head and went to check on the kitten, even taking a wet wipe to clean the leftover gravy from the corner of its mouth.
“Do you have the litter box and bed ready?” Qi Ying asked, cradling the satisfied kitten and looking back at Xing Xiaochu. Noticing the girl was dazed, she asked curiously, “What’s wrong?”
Xing Xiaochu snapped out of it, shaking her head repeatedly. “No, it’s nothing…”
Qi Ying didn’t give it a second thought. Her attention was entirely on the soft kitten. She scratched its chin and asked, “Have you given it a name?”
Xing Xiaochu blinked, nervously pinching the hem of her clothes. “No, not yet.”
Qi Ying glanced at her, stepped closer, and tapped the girl’s forehead with a chuckle. “Really? Nothing?”
Xing Xiaochu caught the faint scent of roses mixed with the soft green plum wine pheromones radiating from Qi Ying. Her face turned bright red and her mind went blank. After a long pause, she lowered her head and whispered, “I thought of one… Gua Zi (Sunflower Seed). But I was afraid you wouldn’t like it, Sister…”
“Why wouldn’t I?” Qi Ying smiled. “It’s a lovely name.” She looked down at the kitten kneading her arm and said, “From now on, your name is Gua Zi. Do you like it?”
The kitten didn’t understand a word, but having eaten its fill, it began to knead rhythmically, letting out a tiny purr.
Qi Ying loved animals and had even thought about keeping a cat in her shop once she started working. But with her busy schedule, she could barely look after herself, let alone a pet. Besides, in a clothing shop, a cat clawing an expensive garment would be a disaster.
Fortunately, this was a game. She didn’t have to worry about those things; she could raise a cat if she wanted to.
After playing with Gua Zi for a bit and seeing its eyes drooping with sleep, she stopped bothering it and tucked it into its bed. The little thing wiggled its butt as it burrowed in and fell fast asleep.
Qi Ying sighed. Eat and sleep—she was worried this cat would become quite chubby.
“Right,” Qi Ying suddenly remembered, turning to Xing Xiaochu. “When is your exam?”
“Monday,” Xing Xiaochu replied.
“That’s the day after tomorrow.” Like any parent, Qi Ying asked, “How’s the revision going? Are you confident about getting into No. 3 High School?”
Xing Xiaochu didn’t dare speak. She gave Qi Ying a timid look and lowered her head.
“Don’t go silent on me.” Qi Ying sat beside her, tilting her head to look at her. “If you get in, you get in. If not, we’ll look at other schools. It’s not a big deal.”
Xing Xiaochu looked up then, gazing at Qi Ying for a long time before whispering, “If I don’t pass, will you think I’m stupid?”
Qi Ying laughed, rubbing the girl’s head. “Even if you are, you’d be my little dummy.”
Xing Xiaochu’s face flushed slightly, understanding Qi Ying’s meaning.
…
On Monday, after thinking it over, Qi Ying decided to take a day off from the shop.
Time flowed at the same rate in both worlds. If she worked, she couldn’t accompany Xing Xiaochu to the exam. Even if the girl was just a string of data, Qi Ying wanted to do this right. She didn’t want to miss such an important moment.
Xia Ruoxin agreed readily. Qi Ying tidied up, changed her clothes, and entered the game from the alleyway behind the shop.
It was a beautiful, sunny day.
The exam started at 9:30 AM. Since it was an entrance test for a transfer, Xing Xiaochu was the only one. She had two hours to complete a comprehensive paper. The results would be phoned to Qi Ying in two days. The girl was incredibly nervous.
Xing Xiaochu wore her white dress and white shoes, her hair tied in a ponytail. Her bangs fluttered in the breeze, but her brow was furrowed, and her hands were nervously twisting her skirt until it was wrinkled.
Qi Ying smiled and smoothed the fabric. She leaned down and said, “If I tell you not to be nervous, you’ll be nervous anyway. But don’t be afraid. The grade doesn’t matter. I’ve already scouted another school for you just in case. You’ll definitely have a place to study.”
Xing Xiaochu bit her lip and nodded obediently. She even reached out to gently tug on Qi Ying’s sleeve, whispering, “Sister, can we have dumplings for lunch? I want the ones from the shop under our building.”
Qi Ying’s eyes curved. “Deal. I’ll wait for you at the gate. When you’re done, we’ll go get dumplings.”
Only then did Xing Xiaochu smile.
Two hours later, Qi Ying saw Xing Xiaochu emerge from the school. The girl spotted her, ran across the street, and threw herself into Qi Ying’s arms, nearly knocking her over.
“Judging by that, I take it the exam went well?” Qi Ying asked, holding her.
Xing Xiaochu looked a bit shy but nodded, looking up from Qi Ying’s embrace. “The questions were quite easy. I think I’ll get in.”
“Good,” Qi Ying encouraged. “Then let’s go eat.”
Xing Xiaochu let go and followed Qi Ying home. Unlike her mood when they arrived, her footsteps were now light and airy. Dappled sunlight fell on them as they walked. Smelling the faint scent of green plum wine, Xing Xiaochu carefully leaned a little closer to Qi Ying.
She wanted to be nearer.
…
The next two days were a wait. Qi Ying didn’t let the girl go out in the heat; it was much better in the air-conditioned house. Every afternoon, she ordered milk tea or iced jelly for her. After work, she’d head back to eat and chat with her. Time passed quickly.
Qi Ying was working on a garment pattern when she finally got the call.
“Hello, are you Xing Xiaochu’s guardian?” a woman asked. “Student Xing Xiaochu has passed the entrance test with excellent marks. Please bring the required documents to the school to handle the enrollment procedures before the term starts. I’ve sent the details via text.”
Qi Ying’s eyes lit up. She thanked the caller repeatedly before hanging up.
Xia Ruoxin, who was lounging on the sofa playing on her phone, asked, “Who was that? You look thrilled.”
Qi Ying was already dialing Xing Xiaochu’s number. “The school.”
“?”
Before Xia Ruoxin could process that, the call connected. Qi Ying said happily, “You passed! The teacher wants me to bring the documents over this week. You’re going to No. 3 High School!”
Xing Xiaochu was overjoyed. The tension of the last two days finally broke. She clutched her phone and let out a happy “Mm!” before saying, “Thank you, Sister.”
Qi Ying smiled. “Why thank me? You’re the one who sat the exam.”
Xing Xiaochu shook her head. “I still have to thank you. If it wasn’t for you, I might never have gone back to school.”
Qi Ying felt a warm glow. Her gentle expression made Xia Ruoxin’s jaw nearly hit the floor. Qi Ying told Xing Xiaochu, “I’ll order a cake. Let’s celebrate when I get home.”
After hanging up, Qi Ying prepared to buy the cake online, but Xia Ruoxin snuck up behind her. Reading the call log, she muttered, “Xing Xiaochu… who’s that?”
Qi Ying jumped. “Why do you walk so quietly?”
Xia Ruoxin crossed her arms. “I walk like an elephant; you just weren’t paying attention. Come on, who is Xing Xiaochu? Sounds like a girl. Don’t tell me…”
Qi Ying waved her hands dismissively. “What are you thinking? She’s… a friend’s daughter. She’s in her senior year. I’m helping her find a school.”
Xia Ruoxin drew out her words. “Is the little girl pretty?”
Qi Ying blinked, thought about it seriously, and then said, “None of your business.”
Xia Ruoxin cackled. “She must be beautiful then! Our A-Ying has seen plenty of beauties, so if you think she’s pretty, she must be stunning, right?”
Qi Ying ignored the teasing. “Stop talking nonsense. The kid has to study for her college entrance exams. Don’t make jokes.”
“Kids nowadays know a lot,” Xia Ruoxin countered. “Besides, she’s a senior, she’s practically an adult. Who says they can’t fall in love?”
“I don’t have those thoughts. Don’t talk rubbish.”
While bickering with Xia Ruoxin, Qi Ying ordered the cake. “I’m leaving early today. Just lock the doors and windows before you go.”
“Fine, fine! Go spend time with your ‘little friend’ and leave lonely me to wither away in the shop!”
Qi Ying rolled her eyes at Xia Ruoxin’s dramatic howling. By three o’clock, she was gone.
Not long after she left, the shop bell chimed. Shi Yu, dressed as vibrantly as a little peacock, appeared at the door. She folded her parasol and paused, seeing only Xia Ruoxin.
Xia Ruoxin propped her chin on her hand and grinned. “Hi~”
Shi Yu blinked. “Where’s A-Ying?”
