Chapter 15: “Little girl, you must take this kitten…”
Startled by the other woman’s words, Qi Ying glanced sideways and said, “Stop talking nonsense. No one is waiting for me; I was just playing a game earlier.”
Xia Ruoxin’s eyes widened. “What kind of game lets you make phone calls?”
Qi Ying ignored her, pulling her measuring tape back from around Xia Ruoxin’s neck to get back to work. By the time Xia Ruoxin left for the day, she still hadn’t managed to pry out exactly what game Qi Ying was playing. She departed with a sly, fox-like grin. Only after she was gone did Qi Ying breathe a sigh of relief and continue with her tasks.
By the time she closed up the shop, it was already past ten in the evening.
Exhausted from the long day, Qi Ying yawned as she tidied her workbench. The heavy-duty wedding dress for the bride was finished, and the groom was very satisfied with his suit. Once she headed over on the wedding day for a final check and to handle any minor issues with the gown, this commission would be officially complete.
The customer for the trench coat requested shipping, so Qi Ying scheduled a courier pickup for the next morning. After finishing her chores, she brushed her teeth, washed her face, and went to bed.
In the middle of her sleep, the phone on her pillow began to ring. Someone was calling her.
Qi Ying didn’t wake up, her head tilted to the side as she continued to sleep soundly.
…
Meanwhile, Xing Xiaochu was walking along the street, clutching her phone and waiting anxiously.
Qi Ying had said she would be back after work. Why was it one or two in the morning and she still wasn’t home?
Why wouldn’t Qi Ying’s calls go through?
Had something happened to her?
Xing Xiaochu was worried, but she didn’t dare wander too far. Since she was unfamiliar with the area, she could only pace back and forth near the apartment complex, hoping to see which direction Qi Ying would return from.
The streets were deserted in the late hours of the night. Only the glowing signs of roadside shops remained lit, casting Xing Xiaochu’s shadow long across the ground.
The further she walked, the fewer signs she saw. She didn’t realize where she had wandered. While trying to call Qi Ying again, she prepared to head back, but just as the call connected, two men staggered out from the mouth of an alley.
Xing Xiaochu’s heart tightened, and she froze in her tracks.
She couldn’t see them clearly from a distance, but based on their build and height, they appeared to be two Alphas.
The hand clutching her phone began to tremble uncontrollably. She was terrified of Alphas, especially in a situation like this.
As the figures drew closer, she could even smell the heavy scent of alcohol on them. The phone rang for a long time—so long that Xing Xiaochu thought no one would answer—until finally, Qi Ying picked up.
“Hello?”
Qi Ying was still half-asleep. Lying in bed, she hadn’t even checked who was calling before putting the phone to her ear. She heard Xing Xiaochu cry out a frantic “Sister!” followed by a loud thud—the sound of a phone hitting the ground. Qi Ying was instantly jolted awake.
She sat up abruptly and checked her phone, confirming it was indeed a call from Xing Xiaochu. She said “Hello?” a few times, but when no one responded, she knew something was wrong!
Qi Ying leaped out of bed, grabbed a jacket, and immediately launched the game.
Upon entering, she found herself at her front door. she searched the house and found no sign of Xing Xiaochu. Noticing a pair of shoes Xing Xiaochu usually wore was missing from the entryway, she realized the girl had gone out.
Cold sweat broke out across Qi Ying’s forehead.
It was the middle of the night—what was a kid like Xing Xiaochu doing out so late!
Qi Ying rushed downstairs. As if sensing her panic, the game sent a notification:
Ding—
[Dear Designer, your Xiaochu has run into a bit of “small trouble” in the alley across from the South Gate. Go help her quickly~]
Qi Ying frowned. Without a second thought, she broke into a run.
What kind of trash system was this? Xing Xiaochu was in trouble, yet it sounded so nonchalant—it even used a tilde!
Qi Ying felt like strangling the system herself!
With no cars on the road late at night, Qi Ying hopped over the guardrail and ran toward the alley. From a distance, she saw Xing Xiaochu surrounded by two people. The three of them were pushing and shoving, and Qi Ying’s temper flared instantly.
“What are you doing!” Qi Ying shouted at the group.
The two drunks turned to look at Qi Ying with vacant expressions. It wasn’t until Qi Ying reached them that she realized why the system had called it “small trouble.”
“Meow— Meow— Meow—”
Xing Xiaochu was cradling a tiny kitten, no bigger than a palm, which was crying out in fear. Xing Xiaochu looked up at Qi Ying and called out “Sister” in a small voice.
Drunk #1 looked at the kitten and said, “Stop crying… look, someone’s here to take you home… hic.”
Drunk #2 added, “Kittens… kittens should be raised by girls… hic hic. Little girl, you must take this kitten… you must take it…”
Qi Ying: “…”
She pushed the two men aside, pulled Xing Xiaochu to the side, and asked with a frown, “What’s going on?”
Holding the kitten, Xing Xiaochu didn’t know how to explain.
This is what had happened:
When Xing Xiaochu had called and cried out “Sister,” she had accidentally tripped over some roadside clutter and fallen, causing her phone to fly out of her hand and break.
The two stumbling drunks had approached her then. Xing Xiaochu was terrified and curled up, not daring to move. Drunk #1, his face flushed red, had grinned lewdly and unzipped his jacket. Xing Xiaochu squeezed her eyes shut in fear, but the next second, she heard a meow, and something small and warm was pressed against her face.
Then followed the two drunks’ drunken insistence that she take the kitten.
Qi Ying was stunned by the explanation. She looked down at the kitten huddled in Xing Xiaochu’s arms. It looked about two months old—old enough to be weaned—with soft, fuzzy fur and a tiny orange tail sticking straight up in a defensive posture, meowing warily.
When Qi Ying tried to reach out to pat its little head, the kitten hissed at her with its tiny, milky voice.
It was actually quite cute.
The two drunks leaned in again.
Drunk #1 said, “Its mom is a cream-colored cat.”
Drunk #2 added, “Right at the bar next door, hic… we stole it.”
Drunk #1 whispered, “Shhh, don’t tell its mom. Its mom is super fierce…”
Drunk #2 giggled and hiccuped, saying to Xing Xiaochu, “Kittens, hehe, kittens should be raised by girls, hehehe… hic.”
Qi Ying: “…”
Speechless, Qi Ying stepped between the drunks and Xing Xiaochu, telling them coldly, “Scram.”
The two drunks didn’t take offense. Arm-in-arm, they staggered away, leaving only Qi Ying, Xing Xiaochu, and the wailing orange kitten in the alley.
Xing Xiaochu looked down to soothe the kitten. The little thing clung to her chest, trying to burrow into her arms. Xing Xiaochu looked up timidly at Qi Ying and whispered while petting the kitten, “Sister, I’m sorry… I’ve caused you trouble again…”
