- Chapter 1.4 - Prince Alexis’s Confusion
“—I’ve had enough. As of this moment, I am breaking off our engagement!”
Those final words are thrown at me. The crowd gets even more excited. Everywhere, people are shouting, “It’s about time!” and “Lady Serena cannot be forgiven!” It is a storm of cold-hearted insults, exactly like the scene where a “villainess” is punished.
However, as I look at Alexis standing right in front of me, his face looks like he is in pain. In the game, this is the part where the Prince leaves the villainess behind and takes the heroine’s hand. But his voice is shaky, and his eyes are wavering.
“…This cannot be helped. What you have done can no longer be forgiven.”
He repeats these words as if he is trying to convince himself. His hands are shaking slightly, and he is biting his lip. I can tell the people around us are a bit confused by his behavior. The nobles probably expected the Prince to be much colder when making this decision.
“Prince Alexis, please save Lily! She didn’t do anything wrong!”
Suddenly, the heroine—Lily Etoile—clings to him, crying as if she is collapsing. Lily comes from a commoner background, but she has the power of a “Saint” and has been the center of attention at the academy. Even now, her cute appearance is winning everyone’s sympathy.
However, I don’t think I am imagining the way her tears seem a bit calculated. Her light blonde hair, her big eyes, and her delicate tears—she acts exactly like a “perfect heroine” should.
“That you would do such a thing.” Alexis looked at Lily and gasped slightly, but he didn’t say anything else.
As I watch them, I can’t shake a strange feeling, and a small question grows in my mind.
Was Lily, the heroine, really just a victim of my (Serena’s) bullying?
That might be how the game story goes, but the Prince’s face doesn’t show a passion to “save the heroine.” Instead, it is filled with deep suffering.
