My Possessive Boss Is Unexpectedly Needy - Chapter 16
Chapter 16
The stars in the night sky seemed reluctant to appear, silently hiding behind dark clouds to seek sanctuary.
In a seemingly deserted alleyway, a woman picked her way through with extreme caution. It was Feng Nuan!
Ring—
A sudden trill from her pocket made Feng Nuan tremble. She quickly pressed herself against the alley wall and answered the phone furtively.
“Hello—” she whispered.
The person on the other end replied, “Our boss has agreed. How do we find you?”
Feng Nuan swallowed hard, her voice tight with nerves. “Fuchang Road, No. 12.”
With the deal struck, Feng Nuan hung up quickly. She had nowhere else to go; since she stole the design blueprints, her rented apartment had been surrounded by Lu Yeyan’s men. Even her usual haunts were crawling with his people. Fortunately, she still had this one residence that no one knew about.
Feng Nuan scanned her surroundings warily, clutched the briefcase in her arms tighter, and turned to run toward the deepest part of the alley.
…
When Yu Zining woke up, it was already dark. Seeing no sign of Lu Yeyan, his heart sank. Does Lu Yeyan still refuse to forgive me?
He slowly pushed himself up, dragging his aching body to find some water. Downstairs, he saw Gu Yuan still in the living room.
“Butler Gu? It’s so late, why aren’t you resting?”
Gu Yuan looked at Yu Zining and lowered his eyes. “Madam, it’s like this. An emergency came up at the Young Master’s company. Secretary Shen has already been back several times to collect materials. I’m staying here in case anything else is needed.”
Anxious, Yu Zining asked, “What happened?”
Gu Yuan frowned. Considering the current state of Lu Yeyan and Yu Zining’s relationship, he figured there was no harm in telling him. “The design blueprints for the competition were stolen. The Young Master is currently searching for the culprit while trying to find a way to remedy the situation.”
“What?”
Yu Zining’s brow furrowed. The blueprints must be incredibly important to Lu Yeyan for him to mobilize so many people. He rushed back upstairs and dialed Shen Ziqi’s number.
“Ziqi!”
Shen Ziqi was currently communicating with new designers. Seeing Yu Zining’s call, she hurried out to answer. “Madam?”
Without wasting words, Yu Zining asked about the situation and learned the full story. Just then, a voice came from Shen Ziqi’s end: “Secretary Shen, we found it. Fuchang Road, No. 12. It’s the old residence of Feng Nuan’s boyfriend.”
Before Shen Ziqi could speak to him again, Yu Zining hung up. She didn’t think much of it and turned back to her data, heading toward Lu Yeyan’s office.
Looking at the few remaining bodyguards outside his window, Yu Zining thought to himself: I have to help him!
He pulled a set of men’s clothes from the closet and changed immediately. He grabbed a black baseball cap and, for extra safety, put on a face mask. Using bedsheets tied into a long rope, he waited for a lapse in the staff’s attention and lowered himself from the window into the back garden. With a series of agile movements, he scaled the perimeter wall and leaped out of the villa.
He hailed a taxi by the roadside. “Driver, Fuchang Road!”
At the thought of being able to help Lu Yeyan, a smile touched his lips. This way, Lu Yeyan won’t think I’ve betrayed him, right?
…
Yu Zining arrived at Fuchang Road quickly and stepped into the pitch-black alley. The area seemed long abandoned; many of the houses were marked for demolition. Walking through the desolate path, a chill ran down his spine. The night air was biting, and a white mist slowly blanketed the cracked pavement.
Using his phone as a flashlight, he walked until he saw No. 12. The surroundings were shrouded in darkness. Is this really the right place? There were no lights, and it looked like no one had been there for years. Was Feng Nuan actually here?
He knocked, but there was no response. He slowly pushed the gate open.
Creak—
The heavy gate opened with a groan, sending a cloud of dust into his face. Thankfully, he was wearing a mask. He stepped into the courtyard, which looked bleak and overgrown. As he shone the light at his feet, he noticed footprints in the moss. Judging by the size, they belonged to a woman.
It seemed Feng Nuan had indeed been here. Was she inside?
Yu Zining entered the house cautiously. The interior was draped in thick spiderwebs. Suddenly, a sound like a rolling glass marble came from above, making him jump. He swung his light upward and saw a wooden staircase leading to an attic.
He took a deep breath. “Nothing to be afraid of. It’s just an old house; these sounds are normal,” he whispered to encourage himself.
He climbed the stairs, each step emitting a sharp creak. Reaching the attic, he found it filled with dusty junk. Just as he thought the place was empty, a wooden club swung toward him from behind.
He heard the wind of the swing and spun around, narrowly dodging the blow. In the darkness, he saw a pair of bloodshot eyes staring at him with murderous intent.
“Are you Feng Nuan?” he called out cautiously.
Feng Nuan didn’t say a word. She lunged at him frantically, her club nearly connecting several times. Yu Zining dodged nimbly, and the club smashed into various items around the room, sending junk flying and shattering.
“Calm down!” Yu Zining shouted while dodging. “I know stealing the designs wasn’t your intention. Tell me what you need, and I’ll help you.”
Feng Nuan paused, letting out a manic laugh. “No… Lu Yeyan is a demon. There’s no turning back for me. I’m almost out of here. As long as I kill you, I’ll get the check tomorrow and escape!”
She swung the club at him again. Yu Zining knew he couldn’t keep this up. He tried to bolt for the attic exit, but Feng Nuan was too close. In an instant, the two of them were locked in a desperate struggle.
