My Idol Turns Out To Be My Ex-Girlfriend - Chapter 15
“Just say what you need to say, I’m in the middle of a movie.”
“Oh? Has our Little San finally succeeded in a blind date, held hands, and made it to the cinema?” He Ye’s voice carried that signature, annoying cockiness.
“Get lost. I’m at home, using the projector.”
“So you aren’t rushing a manuscript today?”
“I’m off for these two days. Do you actually have something to say? If not, I’m hanging up.”
“Don’t hang up, don’t hang up! San, I wanted to ask you something. About half a month ago, did you go to a bar and tell some punks that you were my girlfriend?”
Qiao Lian glanced over, arms crossed over her chest.
Lin Sanyuan’s brow furrowed deeply. “What kind of nonsense is that? I never said that. I only said I was your friend.”
He Ye started hollering on the other end of the line. “Are you an idiot? Since when has He Ye ever been ‘friends’ with a girl? I only do the whole ‘brother and sister’ vibe, okay?”
Lin Sanyuan let out a cold, mocking laugh. “Who’s your sister? Don’t even try that with me.”
When He Ye was younger, he was a total jerk. Relying on his handsome face and the fact that he was a genuine second-generation rich kid, he moved easily through the bar scenes and the racing circuits.
But in Lin Sanyuan’s eyes, there was a better word for him.
A playboy.
Her life was as ordinary as moss on a stone, and by all logic, she should never have crossed paths with a wealthy young master like him. It got to the point where, during the period when He Ye was haunting her like a ghost, she honestly wondered if she had been cursed.
She even entertained the thought that these wealthy families followed some superstition and were looking for a scapegoat with a matching birth chart to ward off bad luck for him. She spent quite a while feeling uneasy, even shelling out three hundred yuan for a temple master to read her fortune.
The way she and He Ye met was actually quite cliché.
It was through a blind date, though there was no mutual middleman. That day, she was supposed to meet an engineer from her father’s company at a cafe. Coincidentally, He Ye was at the same cafe, meeting a girl his mother had arranged for him.
She wasn’t interested on her end, and He Ye hadn’t taken a liking to his date either. Both dates failed.
Heaven knows if the wind had blown something into He Ye’s eyes at that moment, but he suddenly fixated on her. He ran over and lied, claiming he was her actual blind date and wanted to start their meeting early. It had been deathly embarrassing for Lin Sanyuan.
After a few interactions, Lin Sanyuan found out his secret.
He Ye was gay and had a boyfriend, but he didn’t dare let his family know. In other words, he had approached her with his shitty schemes just to shut his parents up.
Having known each other for years, she and He Ye were considered half-friends, though they rarely interfered in each other’s private lives.
“Oh, don’t be so heartless. You are my ‘rumored girlfriend,’ after all.”
Lin Sanyuan made a gagging sound, feeling a bit nauseous. Qiao Lian quickly sat up and rubbed her back.
“Wait, is the reaction really that strong?” He Ye laughed over the phone. “Man, I just love how much you clearly despise me.”
“Are you sick? You must be sick! I just ate. If I throw up, you’re paying for it.”
“I’ll pay! No problem. Come over to my place for dinner tonight. My parents want to see you.”
This time, Lin Sanyuan really couldn’t hold back. “What the hell?! What happened that made them want to see me?”
He Ye turned the tables on her. “You’re asking me? It’s because of you. Everyone thinks we’re dating, and now my parents know.”
Lin Sanyuan pressed her fingers against the throbbing veins in her forehead. “Cut it out. This isn’t the first time you’ve used me as a shield. It’s been years, why is there a sudden dinner?”
Back then, He Ye had approached her with the intent of using her as a shield. On the very day of their “blind date,” he took the liberty of snapping a photo of them together and sent it to his family group chat.
Claiming they were still in the “cultivating feelings” stage, he dragged it out year after year. Eventually, his extended family grew disappointed, figured things had ended in a breakup, and let the matter drop. Lin Sanyuan had never met his parents, and no one took it seriously.
Of course, the reason Lin Sanyuan allowed him to mess around like this was that they had formed a secret alliance. By helping him, she also used He Ye’s name to ward off countless blind dates of her own. The only downside was that as time went on, her family started to think he was unreliable, a “scumbag” who was just stringing her along.
With such a bombshell dropping today, Lin Sanyuan felt He Ye was plotting something big.
“Oh, my parents are just happy to see me in a relationship. It’s an emergency, please. Get yourself ready, I’ll pick you up at your place at 4:30.”
Lin Sanyuan took a deep breath, the air felt as cold as a blade. “He Ye, I am not going to indulge your bad habits.”
Sensing she was truly angry, He Ye fell silent for a moment. His tone became helpless. “I’m sorry, I really didn’t have a choice. That’s why I came up with this stupid idea. You know Brother Wu has an important political exam this year. I don’t want to affect him. My parents seem to have suspected something, and they’re hell-bent on sending me abroad. I can only turn to you. Please help me. You’re the only good friend I can think of, I’m begging you.”
Lin Sanyuan frowned. “Will having dinner with your parents actually solve anything? If you two really plan on being together forever, are you going to hide it from your parents for the rest of your lives?”
“Sigh,” He Ye’s voice sounded heavy. “Those two old folks at home… if they knew I was gay, I’m afraid they’d cause a scene at Brother Wu’s workplace. He works for the state. I can’t let his ten years of hard work go up in smoke because of me. I can only use time to wear them down. Slowly. If one day isn’t enough, then a year. If a year isn’t enough, then ten. If I keep at it like I’m training a hawk, there will eventually be a way. My life is a mess anyway, so a bit more mess doesn’t matter, but Brother Wu is different. I can’t ruin him.”
Hearing this, Qiao Lian knew Lin Sanyuan was done for. This guy named He Ye clearly knew Lin Sanyuan’s temperament inside out. His ability to play the victim was top-tier. She would definitely fall for it.
Lin Sanyuan’s eyelids drooped, and her fingers began fidgeting with the hem of her shirt, though her tone softened considerably. “You know I… I’m not good at dealing with strangers, especially elders from a wealthy family.”
He Ye heard the shift in her voice and knew he had her. “It’s fine, it’s fine! My parents have always liked you. If you help me this time, when you run into trouble in the future, your brother will remember this favor and pay you back twofold. Besides, we’re eating at my sister’s house today. She’s young, so dinner won’t be that awkward. Also, my house has a dog, a Husky. My sister’s friend left it with us. You can pet it all you want.”
What? Not just two parents, but a sister and a dog too?!
Lin Sanyuan rolled her eyes in silence. She knew she couldn’t escape her fate today. She said irritably, “This is the last time I’m helping you. Anyway, I don’t have money for gifts, so prepare them yourself.”
“San is the best! You’re my best friend for life. When you get married later, I’ll give you a massive red envelope!”
“I’m not counting on the red envelope. Just don’t beat up the groom, and we’re good.”
He Ye burst out laughing.
Actually, as a friend, He Ye was very loyal. In the past, when she went on blind dates and inevitably encountered a few creeps, He Ye was always the one who stood up for her. Although his way of standing up for her usually involved beating the other guy to a pulp, getting himself thrown into detention, and then acting like a spoiled prince complaining about the detention center’s food. She’d have to act like his mother, occasionally cooking a few dishes to visit him.
He Ye was a few years older than her, but his mental age was incredibly immature. Sometimes it really felt like she was raising a son, leaving her constantly frustrated with him.
After hanging up, Lin Sanyuan was no longer in the mood for the movie. She asked Qiao Lian if she wanted to continue watching. Qiao Lian shook her head and tucked herself into the blanket. “No. I’ll wait until you get back from dinner and we can watch it together.”
She didn’t ask much about He Ye. She really didn’t care for gossip. Lin Sanyuan noticed that Qiao Lian’s reaction to the topic of homosexuality was far too calm for a student. After hearing about the drama between two men, she didn’t react at all.
Lin Sanyuan remembered when she was in school, she had a female deskmate who was a severe misandrist. She used to say men were good for nothing. Later, after reading too many BL manga, she told Lin Sanyuan that two men together, however, were actually quite good. Lin Sanyuan could never understand that logic.
“Okay then. I won’t be here for dinner. Just heat up the food and you can eat. There are no greens for tonight, so I’ll make a cold cucumber salad for you in a bit. You can just eat that.”
Qiao Lian had already learned how to use the gas stove, which was great. Still, Lin Sanyuan couldn’t stop worrying, nagging as she spoke. “Remember to turn off the gas after you’re done. If there’s anything you don’t understand, go ask the grandma across the hall. I’ll say a few words to her before I leave. Don’t be shy about asking her. I buy fruit for her often, and she’s very warm-hearted. Oh, right, do you want some milk tea? I can bring some back for you.”
“Lin Sanyuan,” Qiao Lian called her name seriously, her gaze dark as she looked at her. “I am not a child anymore.”
“Alright, alright.” Lin Sanyuan got up to put on her shoes, but Qiao Lian called out again.
“Lin Sanyuan, if I don’t drink milk tea, can you come back a bit earlier tonight?”
And she claims she isn’t a child.
“I’m just going to deal with some business, it’s not a real meeting with the in-laws. I won’t stay long.”
At 4:30, He Ye arrived as promised, riding into the old village with a low, powerful roar of an engine. The bike had a red and black color scheme, the casing shimmering with a cold metallic luster. Its sleek, aerodynamic design made even Lin Sanyuan, who knew nothing about motorcycles, think it looked cool.
Things that looked cool were usually very expensive.
It wasn’t just the bike that was flashy, but the person on it too. He was wearing a motorcycle suit, his long legs resting on the bike in stylish Martin boots. When he took off his helmet, a wave of flamboyant charm hit her. He had shoulder-length, wine-red curly hair, a cross earring hanging from his left ear, and a look that was both lazy and roguish.
Seeing Lin Sanyuan come downstairs, he leaned against his ride, holding a large bouquet of fresh flowers. He gave a casual, cool salute with two fingers to his forehead.
“Yo, good afternoon.”
Lin Sanyuan was nearly blinded by the sight. She noticed neighbors upstairs and downstairs poking their heads out to watch the drama. She hurried over, resisting the urge to kick him. “Are you crazy? Why are you dressed like this?”
He looked like a host from a nightclub, and a top-tier one at that. He Ye thrust the flowers into her arms. “This is already my most low-key outfit.”
Lin Sanyuan stepped back two paces, her expression crumbling. “You even put on cologne!”
She really despised this guy. Tonight’s dinner was going to be an ordeal.
He Ye looked at her with a worried gaze. “Old friend, with your unromantic, straight-girl personality, I think you really might stay single for the rest of your life.” He then chuckled. “Actually, staying single is fine too.”
Lin Sanyuan rolled her eyes. “As long as I never get married or fall in love, I can keep being your shield, right?”
“That’s a bit hurtful, isn’t it?”
He Ye rode aggressively, so he rarely carried girls on his motorcycle. However, Lin Sanyuan actually preferred motorcycles over cars. She disliked the enclosed environment of a car, as she got motion sickness easily if she sat in one for too long. He Ye had seen her get severe motion sickness once, vomiting until she looked like a wilted plant that couldn’t be revived.
Expecting a tough battle tonight, He Ye decided not to drive a car. He grinningly handed a brand-new helmet to Lin Sanyuan. “San, this is my new MV Agusta. I just got the plates. I used it just to pick you up. Isn’t it cool?”
Lin Sanyuan didn’t answer. She held the helmet and thought for a moment before asking, “I’m going to see your parents. Did you report this to your ‘man’?”
“Oh, isn’t that basic etiquette? It’s fine. Brother Wu might get a little jealous of others, but he’s very relieved when it comes to you.”
It was a good thing she truly had no feelings for He Ye, otherwise, those unintentional words would have been quite a blow.
