- Chapter 4 - Reunion and the First Case (III) Needs 24 Hours
Shen Anyan and Hu Bingyu walked out of the gloomy stairwell together, finding that the signal had been restored.
“I’ll call Chen Xi first,” Hu Bingyu smoothed the stray hairs on her forehead. “See if she can find any information on that number.”
Shen Anyan nodded, her gaze unconsciously resting on the side of Hu Bingyu’s face. In the sunlight, Hu Bingyu’s outline appeared particularly soft, and that unruly wisp of hair gently swayed in the breeze, looking somewhat cute.
After the call ended, Hu Bingyu put away her phone and glanced coolly at Shen Anyan: “What are you looking at?”
“Nothing… I wasn’t looking at anything.” Shen Anyan quickly retracted her gaze.
“Hmmph~” Hu Bingyu narrowed her eyes and moved closer to Shen Anyan. “Although I don’t understand your theories about detecting lies, my intuition tells me you’re definitely lying!”
Shen Anyan instantly fell silent. After all, she certainly couldn’t say those embarrassing words, “I was looking at you.”
She shifted her gaze uncomfortably, her heart rate slightly quickening. Seeing this, a sly smile appeared at the corner of Hu Bingyu’s mouth.
“Never mind, I won’t tease you anymore.” She chuckled and took a step back. “Sister Chen Xi said she would look into the number as quickly as possible. Let’s hurry up and meet with Captain Wang.”
Shen Anyan sighed in relief and followed Hu Bingyu’s steps. Walking behind her, looking at her figure—both strange and familiar—her inner conflict returned. Now might be the best time; she absolutely had to tell her about Shen Miaos’s prison break.
“Bingyu—!” She quickly reached out and grabbed Hu Bingyu’s sleeve.
“What is it?”
“My sister escaped from prison,” Shen Anyan whispered.
Hu Bingyu was slightly stunned. She had vaguely heard about Shen Simiao’s prison break.
In the police archives, that woman was classified as a high-risk serial killer. Her intelligence was extremely high, and she excelled at orchestrating various seemingly accidental attacks.
The police back then had suspected foul play in the frequently occurring disappearances and accidents, but the investigations always led to dead ends until Shen Anyan reported her to the police, allowing them to connect all the clues. However, since Shen Simiao was a minor at the time of her arrest, she was only sentenced to life imprisonment and was held in a high-security prison in Beijing.
Shen Simiao’s escape remains a mystery, and as a detective in the local Special Cases Unit, Hu Bingyu was not fully aware of the details.
“What’s wrong? Do you want me to help catch your sister?”
“No, that’s secondary. The main thing is you need to protect yourself, Bingyu…” Shen Anyan said solemnly, speaking slowly. “She left me a letter saying she would kill you herself.”
Hu Bingyu was suddenly startled, then frowned deeply: “Wait, why does your sister want to kill me? I have no grudges with her.”
“She is a typical patient with Paranoid Personality Disorder, possessing an extremely strong, pathological possessiveness over me,” Shen Anyan explained, her tone filled with helplessness and worry. “In her world, anyone who might take me away is a potential enemy.”
“You mean she thinks I took you away, so she wants to kill me?” Hu Bingyu was somewhat incredulous and muttered, “Oh my goodness, what kind of Yandere sister-complex is this…”
Shen Anyan’s gaze grew even more serious, and her voice became agitated: “Hu Bingyu, I’m not kidding you! She is genuinely dangerous!”
At this shout, Hu Bingyu froze instantly. She was well aware of Shen Simiao’s danger but found the sudden state hard to comprehend.
“I think I told you my father was abusive, right?”
“Mhm.” Hu Bingyu nodded.
“Every time my dad was drunk, he would take his anger out on my sister. I originally thought he was just targeting her, but actually, it was always my sister begging him not to hit me. She gave me a perfect childhood while she herself lived in the shadows. Long-term violent environments had already caused irreversible psychological trauma, which led to the formation of her Antisocial and Paranoid Personality Disorders. Her protective instincts toward me gradually evolved into a pathological possessiveness…”
Shen Anyan recalled the past bit by bit, her eyes gradually changing from initial sadness to coldness.
“My dad’s fall was likely her first murder. The police archives should contain records of several accidents and disappearances she orchestrated. These cases are all connected because most of the victims were classmates or neighbors I had good relationships with. Some wrote me love letters, some often went out to play with me, and others simply held my hand on the way home from school…”
“Wait, I remember a period when we were together, I always felt like someone was following me. Was that person actually Shen Simiao?” Hu Bingyu asked in surprise.
“Yes, it was her. At that time, I already suspected my sister had problems, so I was secretly investigating.”
“Then you breaking up with me and urging me to go abroad back then was…” Hu Bingyu hesitated, a flicker of complex emotion in her eyes.
“Bingyu, I didn’t want you to become the next victim. Back then, I hadn’t found concrete evidence of my sister’s crimes yet,” Shen Anyan quickly explained. This was her true intention.
Hu Bingyu once again narrowed her cat-like eyes, a meaningful smile playing on her lips: “Oh? So breaking up with me was protecting me? How touching.”
Shen Anyan nodded awkwardly, unsure how to respond to the clearly sarcastic tone.
“Since you are so concerned about my safety,” Hu Bingyu slowly approached, a hint of slyness in her eyes, “then from now on, you’ll have to protect me 24 hours a day, never leaving my side.”
Shen Anyan was stunned: “What do you mean?”
Hu Bingyu lightly chuckled, reaching out to gently stroke Shen Anyan’s cheek: “The literal meaning. Aren’t you worried your sister will come to kill me? Then you have to be by my side at all times to protect my safety.”
“But… isn’t that inappropriate?” Shen Anyan hesitated slightly.
“What’s inappropriate about it?” Hu Bingyu raised an eyebrow, a hint of threat in her tone. “Do you want something to happen to me? Or are you saying you don’t actually care about my safety?”
Shen Anyan hurriedly shook her head: “No, of course I care about your safety.”
“Then it’s settled.” Hu Bingyu showed a triumphant smile. “Starting today, you’ll move into my place. For my safety, you’ll have to stick to me like glue, you know.”
Shen Anyan was speechless, looking at Hu Bingyu’s successful expression. She suddenly realized she seemed to have fallen into this woman’s trap, but deep down, she felt a little bit of anticipation for this trap.
“Alright, I agree.” Shen Anyan sighed softly. “But we need to explain the situation to Captain Wang first.”
Hu Bingyu nodded, putting an arm around Shen Anyan’s shoulder: “No problem, I believe Captain Wang will understand. After all, protecting a teammate’s safety is part of the job.”
The two walked in the direction of Wang Li and Yang Fei. Halfway there, Hu Bingyu suddenly stopped and turned to face Shen Anyan. Her expression became serious, a hint of complex emotion in her eyes.
“Anyan, you know what? Actually, for the past eight years, I’ve been thinking about what our story would have been like if you had asked me to stay back then.”
Shen Anyan was startled, a surge of sadness welling up in her heart. She replied softly, “I think about it often too. But Bingyu, I truly had no choice then. I couldn’t let you fall into danger.”
Hu Bingyu gazed into Shen Anyan’s eyes and said quietly, “I know. But did you ever consider that if you had told me the truth back then, perhaps we could have faced everything together?”
Shen Anyan fell silent. She had indeed never considered that possibility. But at the time, she was blinded by fear and a sense of responsibility, focusing only on protecting Hu Bingyu and neglecting the other person’s feelings and right to choose. After Shen Simiao was arrested, she tried various ways to contact her, but couldn’t find her whereabouts.
“I’m sorry, Bingyu.” Shen Anyan sincerely apologized. “I was too self-centered back then.”
A flicker of tears appeared in Hu Bingyu’s eyes, but she quickly regained her composure.
“Let bygones be bygones. Now, we have a chance to start over.” She gently patted Shen Anyan’s shoulder and whispered into her ear, “But this time, don’t think you can shake me off again. Once you move into my place, you’ll have to properly make up for what you owe me over these years…”
Shen Anyan’s ears instantly turned red, feeling both anticipation and nervousness. The prior points weren’t the main issue; the key was what exactly that woman wanted her to make up for. Just thinking about it made her feel hot.
“I will, Bingyu.” Shen Anyan promised earnestly. “I won’t run away this time. No matter what difficulties we face, we’ll face them together.”
Hu Bingyu nodded in satisfaction, a cunning glint returning to her eyes: “It’s a deal then. But don’t think just protecting me is enough; I have many ‘requests’ waiting for you to satisfy.”
Shen Anyan couldn’t help but gulp, unsure how to respond to the obviously suggestive words.
Seeing this, Hu Bingyu couldn’t help but chuckle, reaching out to pinch her cheek: “Did you get the wrong idea, you idiot? Our Profiler Shen, we should go meet Captain Wang.”
Shen Anyan’s face was slightly flushed. She had indeed gotten the wrong idea, a very wrong one… After all, she had been immersed in studying criminal psychology for years, without encountering other women, and Hu Bingyu was her first love. She had absolutely no resistance to those tantalizing words.
“By the way,” Hu Bingyu suddenly spoke, “when you move into my place, you need to be mentally prepared. I’m a very high-maintenance person.”
Shen Anyan smiled nervously: “It’s okay, I’ll do my best.”
Hu Bingyu gave a slight hum, the corner of her mouth turning up: “Then we’ll see your performance. But I’m actually looking forward to seeing you flustered.”
Shen Anyan shook her head helplessly, yet a warm feeling surged in her heart, because the other person was still the same. She couldn’t help but smile, recalling the scene of their first encounter years ago.
Hu Bingyu back then was also so fond of teasing people, always making her heart race and leaving her at a loss.
She quietly gazed at Hu Bingyu’s profile, feeling a strange sense of security, as if the eight years of separation had never happened.
