My Ex-Girlfriend Is a Zombie Queen - Chapter 2
Lu Yu was jolted awake by a sharp, stinging pain in her neck.
Her mind was still a foggy mess as she feebly pushed at the woman pressing down on her. “Why are you biting me…” she murmured, her voice thick with exhaustion and a hint of a pout, sounding more like she was acting spoiled than truly upset.
Click. The bedside lamp flickered on almost immediately.
Under the soft, warm glow, she saw Ye Qianli’s face filled with a level of panic and self-reproach she had never witnessed before. The woman had lost her usual composure, frantically repeating “I’m sorry” over and over again. Without waiting for a response, Ye Qianli hurried to fetch the first-aid kit, but for some reason, the plastic case split in half the moment she opened it, appearing as fragile as if it were made of thin paper.
“Be careful,” Lu Yu said softly. “Did you hurt your hand?”
“No,” the woman replied. Her voice was cold, carrying a strange edge that was unlike her typical tone.
Lu Yu tried to sit up to check on her, but she was firmly pressed back onto the bed. Her body felt limp and sore, making any attempt at resistance futile, so she simply stayed still. She watched through the dim light as the woman leaned over her, focusing intently on treating the wound.
When Ye Qianli was serious, she could look a bit intimidating, her features sharp and frosty with a “do not disturb” aura. To Lu Yu, however, that grumpy expression was actually quite endearing.
It reminded her of the day they first met. Back then, Lu Yu was still the pampered heiress of the Lu family, surrounded by admirers, yet she had tasted the bitterness of being ignored for the very first time. On a sudden, angry whim, she had made a bet with her circle of friends: she would be the one to make that “ice queen” show a different emotion.
Little did she know that she would be the one to fall first and fall so hard that she couldn’t pull herself out. By the time she broke ties with her family, everyone around her assumed she had been put under some kind of spell.
Only Lu Yu knew the truth: Ye Qianli had utterly spoiled her. Like a fish that couldn’t survive without water, she knew she would never find another lover who could tolerate her temper and cherish her so deeply.
This remained true regardless of whether she carried the Lu family name.
The sensation of warm breath brushing against her skin snapped her back to the present, and she realized she had been staring again. A faint blush crept up her cheeks as she stole another glance at the woman, noting that Ye Qianli’s brow was still furrowed and her face remained as dark as still water, clearly weighed down by heavy thoughts.
As the cotton swab touched the bite mark, the stinging sensation of the antiseptic felt like a tiny flame licking at her heart, sparking a hidden sense of unease.
“A-Li…”
Calling her name softly, Lu Yu reached out with her manicured hand to gently smooth the crease between the other woman’s brows. Her eyes shimmered with a faint, watery light. “Are you mad at me?”
“Why would you ask that?”
The woman signaled for her to turn over so she could tend to the marks on her back.
Lu Yu pouted and propped herself up, refusing to cooperate as she snuggled back into the woman’s embrace. “I’ve been coming home late recently. If you don’t like it, I’ll try my best to push those dinners away from now on.”
Thinking it over, that was the only reason she could imagine for the tension.
“I’m not mad at you, honey.” The woman naturally pulled Lu Yu onto her lap, the icy tension in her expression finally dissolving like a frozen pond meeting the sun. “It’s my own problem.”
The complexity in her gaze was replaced by tenderness the moment it landed on Lu Yu. “Let’s finish with the medicine first, or it will hurt more later.”
“Mmm, okay.”
This time, Lu Yu listened and lay down, exposing her smooth back. Because she had been raised in luxury, her skin was as flawless as white jade, bright enough to be dazzling. Now, however, that blank canvas was splattered with mottled colors, and the skin had been broken in several places.
“I’m sorry.” A sharp pang of guilt pierced Ye Qianli’s heart, and she hurriedly looked away, her voice sounding raspy.
“You don’t need to apologize, A-Li,” Lu Yu whispered, squeezing the woman’s hand to stop her from digging her nails into her own palm. “If you want to bite… just don’t pick such an obvious spot next time.”
By the end of the sentence, she had buried her face in the pillow out of embarrassment, though her bright red ears remained exposed. The woman leaned in without hesitation, catching one ear tip in her mouth and licking it gently.
“There won’t be a next time.”
It sounded like a vow. The woman made the promise slowly and firmly, emphasizing every single word.
******
The process of applying the medicine was an ordeal. Lu Yu gripped the bedsheets tightly, forcing herself to suppress the cries of pain rising in her throat. It hurt, but it was just barely bearable.
She didn’t want Ye Qianli to feel any more guilt. It wasn’t intentional; in the ten years they had been together, the woman had never hurt her aside from those first few clumsy attempts when they were younger. This was just a moment of losing control.
Once the final throb of pain faded, she reached out for the woman like a child. “Hold me…”
Her voice trailed off with a lingering sweetness.
The woman didn’t dare hold her too tightly for fear of irritating the wounds, but the moment their skin touched, Lu Yu acted as though the pain had never happened. she burrowed into the woman’s arms. “I’m definitely calling in sick tomorrow.”
“The temperature is dropping lately. If you absolutely have to go, a scarf would cover it,” Ye Qianli suggested after a moment of silence.
“I can’t wear a scarf forever,” Lu Yu teased, giving the woman’s tense cheek a playful tug. “Besides, I wasn’t planning on going anyway. The deal with the client fell through tonight, so if I go in, they’ll just give me a hard time and make me clean up the mess. Hmph. Someone else can deal with it.”
Mentioning President Jia made her roll her eyes.
“A few years ago, I wouldn’t have bothered wasting my breath on him. If anyone tried to play games with me, I’d just find someone else to work with. The Lu family had so much money and so many resources that we never lacked options.”
Having vented, she felt much lighter and couldn’t help but say more.
“Now, the employees are right to gossip behind my back. I’m not the young miss of the Lu family anymore. I have nothing, and I can only rely on myself.”
Struggling was her new normal. However, old habits were hard to break; she was used to things going her way, so the recent string of failures had been jarring.
As she looked up, she was caught off guard by the woman’s gentle gaze. Her heart skipped a beat, and in the next second, a series of intense yet restrained kisses rained down on her lips, sending a wave of heat through her veins.
“I believe you can do it. It will just take some time.”
The familiar scent surrounding her provided a profound sense of security. Her eyes felt a bit misty, but she chose to be playful instead. “That’s just a platitude, A-Li. You’re just saying what I want to hear.”
Secretly, she was so happy she could barely hide it.
“Then what would you like me to do, hmm?”
The woman leaned in to kiss the corner of her eye, her tongue sweeping away a stray tear before she swallowed it slowly. It was a simple action, yet it felt heavy with intimacy.
“You… well, since we’re both free tomorrow, let’s go out. We haven’t spent time together in so long.” Lu Yu looked away and then shyly looked back, her eyes shining with an expectation she couldn’t conceal.
“Okay.”
The woman’s answer didn’t hold a hint of hesitation.
“Then let’s sleep a bit more.” Finding a comfortable spot in the woman’s arms, Lu Yu ignored the fact that the sky was already turning gray. she pulled the duvet up and mumbled, “No alarms allowed. I’m sleeping until I wake up naturally.”
Exhaustion soon swallowed her whole.
As she fell into a deep sleep, she remained unaware that Ye Qianli was still staring at the reddened bite marks on her body, her expression darker and more solemn than ever before.
After a long time, the woman let out a heavy, whispered sigh. “I’m sorry.”
