My Dating Sim Just Got an Update - Chapter 27
Looking at the daily tasks that had suddenly materialized in her quest log, Ren Chenxi found the situation ironic to the extreme. She knew it since when was this damn game ever kind enough to give her a “Narrow Escape” bundle for free?
There was no survival gift. Instead, there was a “Simp Bundle” designed to make her keep chasing and flattering the Goddess!
Back when this cursed game was still a brainless campus romance, there was no taskbar or system-issued quests. There was only the “Wood Goddess’s” affection meter, waiting for Ren Chenxi to grind it to the max. Without any hints or prompts, Ren Chenxi had to grope in the dark, desperately trying to figure out Mu Ning’s likes and dislikes, fawning over her just to raise that score.
Once the game updated into an apocalyptic survival setting, the interface added a Card Center and an Apocalypse Mall. Simultaneously, a taskbar appeared. Initially, it only held one main quest: “Player Survival Time: 2×22 – 2×32.”
But now, the taskbar Ren Chenxi was looking at had sprouted new “Reunion Quests” and “Daily Quests.”
Reunion Quest 1: A long-awaited reunion with the goddess you adore. Start with a hug of love! Reward: SR Recovery Card x5. (Completed)
Reunion Quest 2: You have pined for the goddess for so long and have finally won her heart. Please engage in intimate contact with the goddess.
Reward: SR Explosion Card x5. (Completed)
Ren Chenxi stared fixedly at those two reunion quests, specifically at the word “Completed.” She felt a mix of irritation and sheer bewilderment. When on earth had she hugged or had “intimate contact” with that Ice Goddess? Especially that “intimate contact” what kind of intimacy was that supposed to be? Was it when the woman checked her chest for injuries? Or had she done something else while Ren Chenxi was unconscious?
At the thought of this, Ren Chenxi snapped her head up and glared suspiciously at Mu Ning across the room. As fate would have it, she locked eyes with Mu Ning again. This time, however, Ren Chenxi didn’t look away. She glared back with stubborn defiance.
What are you looking at, you pervert!
Mu Ning was baffled by the glare. However, considering how the girl had been visibly repulsed by her since they met, she found it increasingly strange. Why was this person acting like this? She had the exact same face as Ren Muhui, but her gaze and her attitude were worlds apart from his.
Looking at those familiar eyes—now devoid of the overflowing love that used to be there—Mu Ning felt a wave of dull pain in her chest.
“Ren Mu… Ren Chenxi,” Mu Ning began. “You said you are Ren Muhui’s twin sister. Then where is your brother? Where is he now?” If this person really wasn’t Ren Muhui, then there was no need for Mu Ning to cling to her. It would be a waste of her time and her… emotions.
The moment Mu Ning spoke, the lively chatter of the young people around them died down instantly.
Everyone present knew that Ren Muhui was gone. Everyone except Mu Ning.
“B-boss…”
Chen Gu swallowed hard. He looked hesitantly at Ren Chenxi’s expressionless face and then at Mu Ning’s cold visage, trying to figure out how to break the tragic news gently. But Ren Chenxi cut him off before he could speak.
“Why do you care where he is!”
“Hey, hey, hey! Your brother is the Boss’s boyfriend. It’s only natural for her to be concerned!” Chen Gu frantically tried to smooth things over, startled by Ren Chenxi’s aggressive tone. Because of Ren Chenxi’s space ability and the medicine she provided, none of Mu Ning’s teammates wanted to see the two clash. They especially didn’t want to provoke Mu Ning right before they had to tell her that her boyfriend was dead.
If the Boss’s boyfriend was dead, who knew how much patience she would have left for his sister? If she got upset and kicked the girl out, what would they do?
Chen Gu and the others were worried for Ren Chenxi, but she was in no mood to appreciate their kindness.
When Mu Ning asked about Ren Muhui, Ren Chenxi had looked away from that irritating, icy face to glance at her new daily tasks. That one glance made her blood boil!
Since reuniting with the Goddess, the system-generated tasks were almost all centered around her. Aside from those two “Reunion” quests, the daily tasks listed below were forcing her back into her old role—the simp who followed the Goddess around, constantly trying to please and flatter her.
Tasks like: Make the Goddess smile, Make a “love breakfast” for the Goddess, Sing a love song to the Goddess…
The rewards were tempting—usually an SR-grade card for each completion.
But why should she?!
Back then, even knowing it was a brainless romance game, she had been stupid enough to mess with her brother’s save file and ended up trapped inside. She accepted that it was her own fault and had diligently worked day after day to grind Mu Ning’s affection points.
Now, she had already “cleared” Mu Ning’s route and escaped the game once. Then this brainless game dragged her back against her will. She couldn’t resist, so she had been cautiously trying to survive in this updated apocalypse.
Since it was a survival game now and no longer that moronic romance sim, why the hell did the system want her to go back to being Mu Ning’s simp? Was her only way to survive this living hell to keep groveling at Mu Ning’s feet?
She didn’t want to! She refused!
She was sick of the endless giving and the waiting that never received a response. Even if Mu Ning’s affection for her was at 100% now, why should she act like nothing happened and go back to being obsessed with this cold-hearted, bloodless woman? It was this woman who told her to “get lost” because she was annoyed, wasn’t it?
Ren Chenxi’s original reason for traveling before the update was to clear her head. She was exhausted and bored with this one-sided, endless pursuit. she wanted to leave the campus setting of the game and see the rest of the country.
The root of her exhaustion wasn’t just the lack of response from Mu Ning—it was the fact that when she finally did get a response, it was heart-wrenching.
It was the first time Ren Chenxi had gathered the courage to confess to Mu Ning. After chasing her for so long, the affection points had fluctuated wildly, and Ren Chenxi wanted to know once and for all how Mu Ning truly felt. And Mu Ning’s response?
“Enough, Ren Muhui! Don’t you know how annoying you are?”
“Can you stop pestering me? Your fake concern makes me sick.”
“Get lost! Don’t come near me again!”
On Mu Ning’s birthday, Ren Chenxi had brought a handmade cake and a confession. The result? The recipient slapped the gift away, leaving it smashed in the grass. Along with the cake, Ren Chenxi’s heart was pierced by that ruthless “Get lost!”
As a girl herself, Ren Chenxi knew that women didn’t like overbearing or inappropriate behavior from men. So, throughout her pursuit, she had carefully maintained a respectful distance. When Mu Ning was in a bad mood, she would play soothing music from afar. Knowing Mu Ning didn’t eat breakfast, she insisted on bringing her handmade meals every morning. Before the first snowflake of winter fell, she had gifted Mu Ning a hand-knitted scarf and gloves.
Even for that birthday before summer break, Ren Chenxi had waited on the path to the dormitory and asked Mu Ning to come to a secluded, simply decorated grove.
Mu Ning hated crowds and noise. She despised the way guys would set up flowers and candles under the girls’ dorm for a loud, public confession. In those situations, crowds would chant and pressure the girl to accept, regardless of her feelings.
Ren Chenxi had carefully considered all of Mu Ning’s dislikes. She had put her heart into organizing a private surprise. So, by what right did Mu Ning dismiss all that effort as “hypocrisy”?
Yes, at first, she had treated pursuing Mu Ning as a game, a task. But how could Mu Ning know that she hadn’t given her real heart during that game? She had offered her sincerity over and over, only to have it trampled. Such a heart, no matter how genuine, was now shattered beyond repair!
She was done with this romance game. She was tired. She didn’t want to play anymore!
Ren Chenxi exhaled slowly. Ignoring the frantic signals from Chen Gu and the others, she stared at Mu Ning’s habitually cold face and asked icily, “When was Ren Muhui ever your boyfriend? Didn’t you find him annoying? Didn’t you find him disgusting and tell him to get lost? When was he ever your boyfriend!”
She practically screamed the last sentence.
When I was sincerely orbiting around you, you treated me like a pesky fly. But now that I’ve left that world, you claim I’m your boyfriend? How ridiculous!
Facing Ren Chenxi’s fury, Mu Ning looked utterly stunned.
“How do you know about that?”
Those words were the last things she had said to Ren Muhui before the apocalypse. They were also the words she regretted most in her life.
How does a normal person spend their birthday? Mu Ning didn’t really know. At the very least, they should be happy, right? But Mu Ning had never been happy on her birthdays. Although she had grown up with grand parties, many gifts, and endless well-wishes, how many of those were sincere?
The fake smiles, the hollow flattery—everyone’s “blessings” were merely directed at the family standing behind her.
And her parents? They treated her like a prize exhibit. Every year, not just on her birthday but at various galas and banquets, they would trot her out to show off her looks, her grades, and her talents. In the end, they would likely evaluate the “buyers” and sell her off to the highest bidder.
So, was her birthday ever for her, or was it for them?
Mu Ning hated birthdays. Right up until Ren Muhui appeared.
