My Dating Sim Just Got an Update - Chapter 22
“Ren… Chenxi?”
Hearing those words, Mu Ning’s gaze snapped back to her. She stared at Ren Chenxi in utter disbelief. Her thumb, which had intended to gently wipe away the blood splatter on the girl’s cheek, unconsciously pressed down and rubbed twice as if trying to see if there was another layer of skin hidden beneath this one.
“Ren Muhui! What nonsense are you talking about? This face of yours… let alone a few drops of blood, I would recognize it even if it were burned to ashes!” Mu Ning meticulously wiped the blood away until the skin was clean. Then, cupping Ren Chenxi’s face, she let out a strange, eerie smile. “Don’t think you can shake me off with such a clumsy excuse!”
This was the first time Ren Chenxi had ever seen the Wood Goddess smile at her. To be honest, given Mu Ning’s beauty, the smile wasn’t ugly, but… for some reason, it made Ren Chenxi’s skin crawl.
Coincidentally, the headlights that had been illuminating the scene suddenly flickered out. In the dim light, Mu Ning’s ghostly smile overlapped perfectly with the image of the vengeful spirit from Ren Chenxi’s nightmares.
“No, really, I’m…”
“Senior Sister Mu, Sister Xi is Senior Ren’s sister!”
Just as Ren Chenxi was about to freeze up from fear, Tang Ying ran over from behind to save the day.
“Senior Sister Mu, Sister Xi is a girl!”
“A girl???”
“Yes! I’m a girl!” Mentally thanking Tang Ying a thousand times, Ren Chenxi chimed in hurriedly, “I’m Ren Muhui’s twin sister. My brother and I look very much alike, but whether I’m a man or a woman, you should be able to tell…”
Before Ren Chenxi could finish, Mu Ning’s hand—which had been resting on her face—suddenly “swished” down and felt Ren Chenxi’s chest.
“…”
Everyone who had gathered to watch the drama was stunned by this bold move. More importantly, they all clearly saw Mu Ning’s hand squeeze twice!
Was this still the proud, cold, and unapproachable Ice Queen they used to know?!
“Hey! You…”
Mu Ning’s sudden assault instantly shattered the fear Ren Chenxi felt toward the “blackened” Goddess. Blackened or not, she couldn’t just take liberties like that! Ren Chenxi slapped Mu Ning’s hand away and scrambled back several steps.
“Don’t go too far!”
“You’re really a girl?”
Ren Chenxi’s angry shout and Mu Ning’s question rang out at the same time.
Ren Chenxi met Mu Ning’s shocked gaze. After a long moment, she suddenly laughed.
“Well, didn’t you just get a hands-on experience to find out for yourself?!”
Feeling the soft sensation still lingering on her right palm and seeing the mockery in Ren Chenxi’s eyes, Mu Ning’s hand flew behind her back. Her entire face turned a vivid shade of red.
Even though she had felt it for herself, Mu Ning looked at that familiar face and asked stubbornly, “Ren Muhui, did you refuse to come back to school because you went abroad over the summer for a gender reassignment surgery?”
This time, the horrified looks from Mu Ning’s own team shifted onto Ren Chenxi.
How had they never noticed before that the Wood Goddess’s brain worked in such mysterious ways?!
Ren Chenxi took two deep breaths and took another step back. Suddenly, her body swayed. Before she could process the wave of dizziness, her vision went black. In the final second before she lost consciousness, she remembered: Wait, I’m actually an injured person who just got bitten by a mutant wolf.
“Sister Xi!”
“Sister Xi!”
“Ren… Chenxi?” Mu Ning reached out and caught the falling Ren Chenxi before anyone else could. As she supported the girl’s shoulders, she felt a damp stickiness on the left side. “This… is she hurt?”
Ren Chenxi was wearing a black windbreaker, so even though blood was continuously seeping out and soaking her shoulder, it was very hard to notice in the dark. Mu Ning had smelled a strong scent of blood on her earlier, but she had assumed it came from the dead wolves nearby. She hadn’t expected… that it was actually her?
“Senior Sister Mu, Sister Xi was bitten by a mutant wolf. Do you… do you have any medicine?”
“Medicine? Right! Medicine! Didn’t we just find some at a pharmacy today?” Mu Ning held Ren Chenxi in a half-embrace and turned to ask the group behind her.
“Ah… yes, we have some, but…”
“I’ll take Ren… her to the car to treat the wound first. Chen Gu, go get the medicine and bring it to me.”
As she spoke, Mu Ning lifted Ren Chenxi in a princess carry and turned toward the van with the broken lights. The boy named Chen Gu followed closely, his voice anxious. “But Boss, we only found a tiny bit of medicine… and Sun Jia’s wound is still flaring up…”
“Use it on her first. I’ll go to the neighboring city tomorrow to find more for Sun Jia!”
Mu Ning impatiently interrupted him. She carried Ren Chenxi to the van, bent down, and stepped inside. Seeing her like this, Chen Gu could only shut up and follow. He rummaged through the vehicle to find the precious scraps of medicine they had worked so hard to get. Before handing it over, he shot a dark, resentful look at Ren Chenxi in Mu Ning’s arms.
“Give me the medicine. Turn on the interior light, then get out!”
“The light too??? Boss, our gas…”
“Turn it on!”
“Yes, Boss…”
The dim dome light flickered on, and Chen Gu was kicked out of the van with a sour face. Despite his frustration, he obediently pulled the van door shut after exiting.
“Chen Gu…” Two girls crowded around him. “Is the Boss really giving our medicine to that woman? What about Xiao Jia?”
“Hah, can you change the Boss’s mind? Why don’t you go in and try to talk her out of it?” Chen Gu glanced sideways at the girl who had asked.
“Never mind then.” In their group, the Boss’s word was law. Even if they were unwilling, they could only watch as the precious medicine was used up. “Tsk… honestly, if I’d known, we shouldn’t have come over to check what was happening…” the girl grumbled, throwing a glare at Jian Dan’s group.
The five people from the van didn’t have a single kind look for Jian Dan and her friends. Originally, they had nothing against these survivors; they had even helped kill the wolves. But now, after solving the threat, they had to give up their only supply of medicine. How could they be happy about that?
In this apocalypse, food and water were precious, but medicine was even rarer. Under the hostile glares of Chen Gu and his teammates, Jian Dan’s group could only stay silent. After all, when they had rushed out of the house, it was these people who had saved them from the wolves that weren’t blinded.
After a while, perhaps unable to stand the awkward silence, Yang Xiangrui scratched his head and spoke up cautiously at the prompting of the others. “H-hello, everyone? You’ve been standing for a while. want to come in and sit?”
The atmosphere became even more awkward. The other group didn’t even acknowledge him. Besides, there weren’t even chairs left in that ruined house. Their bus had seats, but would these people even want to get on?
Under Tang Ying’s eye-roll, Yang Xiangrui scratched the back of his head again. He peeked at the quiet van, then at the scowling men and women. They were clearly Mu Ning’s team, so he wondered if they were also S University students. He decided to ask—if they were all alumni, maybe they could bridge the gap.
However, when the other group heard they were from S University, their expressions soured further. One girl sneered sharply, “Tsk, another bunch of ‘S University Giant Babies.’ What? Are you here to latch onto our Boss and suck her dry at the South Sea Base too?”
“Hey! Why are you talking like that? What do you mean ‘sucking her dry’? We… we just came to seek her help!”
“Hah!” Tang Ying’s weak rebuttal only confirmed their suspicions. “Call it ‘seeking help’ if you want, but in reality, you’re just parasites. You treat our Boss like a mobile reservoir—whenever you need water, you go to her. You have no gratitude, no sense of conservation… you even asked her for water to flush toilets and acted like it was your birthright! Why? Just because she’s your ‘Senior’? She’s your senior, not your mother. Why should she baby you? Besides, S University is probably gone by now, and you’re still ‘Senior’ this and ‘Senior’ that!”
“You… we call her ‘Senior’ because we were her juniors. Even if the school is gone, she’s still the senior we respect! And we’re not like those people you described. We just got to H City today!”
“Heh! Maybe you haven’t done it yet, but a whole group of S University giant babies already at the base are doing exactly that. We can see the quality of your school’s students just by looking at them!”
“What kind of bullsh*t is that!” Even though these people had saved them, the mounting insults caused the students’ faces to darken. Yang Xiangrui snapped back, “You’re painting us all with the same brush? I could just as easily say your group are the ones living off our Senior Sister like leeches!”
“Hahaha! That’s rich! Us, leeches? Even though we follow the Boss, whenever she goes on a dangerous mission—whether it’s finding people or supplies we follow her without hesitation! Would you giant babies dare? You stay huddled in the base all day and have the nerve to try and take a cut of the supplies we find!”
“Man, that really is shameless!” Chang Ling, listening from the side, couldn’t help but interject. Yang Xiangrui and the others were also stunned by the behavior of the “S University Giant Babies” described by Chen Gu. “Wait, wait… these ‘giant babies’ you’re talking about… is there a guy named Li Jie among them?”
“Who cares what they’re called! They all just keep crying ‘Senior, Senior.’ Tsk, looking at the way they act, they might as well call her ‘Mom’ instead!”
Chen Gu didn’t bother remembering their names since they only brought trouble. But the sharp-tongued girl next to him nodded. “There is one called Li Jie. He’s the most disgusting and annoying of them all! He leeches off our Boss while sucking up to Fan Juntian. He’s a total traitor!”
“Damn! It really is that piece of trash ruining our reputation!” At the mention of Li Jie, Yang Xiangrui rolled his eyes. “That scumbag was supposed to come with us, but halfway here, he and his friends stole all our water and food! Because of that trash, we almost died of thirst and hunger on the road!”
“…” So they were also victims of the “giant babies”? Chen Gu and his team’s feelings toward Yang Xiangrui’s group became complicated.
“But, knowing Senior Sister Mu’s personality, why would she let a bunch of trash like that keep leeching off her?” Lu Ping, who had been quiet, finally asked the question on his mind.
“Hah! With the Boss’s cold… I mean, ‘aloof’ personality, she did ignore them at first. But there’s a guy who’s tight with Li Jie, what was his name…”
“Liao Lan.”
“Right, Liao Lan. He claims he was the roommate of the Boss’s boyfriend—uh, Ren Muhui. He says he was best friends with him! He was the one who told the Boss that Ren Muhui might have come to H City. For the sake of her boyfriend’s ‘best friend,’ the Boss felt she had to look after them. She didn’t want to find her boyfriend only to have this guy tattle on her, right?”
“Liao Lan? Best friends with Senior Ren?” Tang Ying looked at Yang Xiangrui in confusion.
Yang Xiangrui scratched his head. “How should I know if they were close? Anyway, Senior Ren is dead. There’s no reason for Senior Sister Mu to keep looking after those parasites, right?”
“What? The Boss’s boyfriend is dead?!!!”
As soon as Yang Xiangrui spoke, Chen Gu and his entire group were struck with shock.
Ren Chenxi is waking up in Mu Ning’s van soon.
