My Dating Sim Just Got an Update - Chapter 21
The respite for Ren Chenxi and her group didn’t last long. Soon, the wolf pack launched their second offensive. This time, the wolves were faster and more ferocious. They split into three groups: one surged toward the main door, another charged at the boarded-up window on the far side, and the last wave continued their assault on the window that already had a hole in it.
Each of the three waves was led by a Rank 4 mutant wolf.
“Lu Ping, hold the door! Jian Dan, Chang Ling, Song Xin, and Zhu Kong guard the other window! Everyone else, help me pass the crystals. This window is ours to defend!”
The wolves were fast, but Ren Chenxi, who had been monitoring their movements, was just as quick. As soon as she finished her orders, she flicked a Flash Card. It struck the alpha wolf on the far right, and once again, that wave of wolves skidded to a halt.
The broken wooden slats on her window were getting in the way, making it difficult to hurl the larger crystal blocks. While she had the students use tools to tear the slats down, she leaned out and threw her remaining two Flash Cards at the Rank 4 alphas, leading the other two waves as they entered her range.
Two more bursts of blinding light exploded in succession. Immediately after, Ren Chenxi began throwing her Greasy Cards. She intentionally avoided the Rank 4 wolves this time; after all, the low-tier wolves were guaranteed to secrete oil. The oil slicking the ground would be enough to make the nearby high-level wolves lose their footing.
She didn’t hesitate to burn through her remaining seven Greasy Cards. By the time she finished, the wood blocking her window had been cleared. She activated an Acceleration Card on herself to boost her attack speed, grabbed a crystal shard made from a chair leg, and shouted to the others: “Tear down your boards too! Attack them directly!”
Jian Dan and the others knew the blindness effect only lasted twenty seconds. Fortunately, as Rank 3 ability users, they were naturally stronger than ordinary people. They ripped the boards away in a few tugs and began a fierce counterattack against the blinded, retreating pack.
During those twenty seconds, Ren Chenxi worked in perfect sync with the students. They handed her long, heavy crystals with sharpened ends. With her boosted strength and speed, she killed seventeen mutant wolves in rapid succession. She didn’t just target the ones at her window; she sniped the ones at the other window and the ones charging the door. To get a better angle on the other two groups, she even risked leaning half her body out of the window to throw.
As the twenty seconds ended, Jian Dan’s group had killed three more. Suddenly, the dense cluster of red dots on the mini-map had dwindled to just thirteen. Among them were the three Rank 4 alphas, four blinded wolves whimpering in the back, and six others—two of which were so oily they couldn’t even stand up.
The moment the blindness wore off, the three Rank 4 alphas glared in unison at Ren Chenxi, who was still leaning out of the window. Ignoring their murderous gazes, she hurled a crystal slab at a Rank 3 wolf that had escaped the grease. With a pained howl, the beast collapsed.
Wolves are famously vengeful, and Ren Chenxi had now officially maxed out her “aggro” with the pack.
“ROAR—”
With a thunderous snarl, the three Rank 4 wolves charged at her simultaneously. Their speed was even greater than before. Ren Chenxi only had time to scramble back inside and use her final free daily draw. By the time she did, the wolves were within ten meters. The one on the right was less than six meters away.
The final card she drew—luckily—was another Flash Card. As the lead wolf pounced with a roar, she instinctively threw the card and summoned a sharp dagger into her hand. She had already given the four large machetes from her inventory to Lu Ping, Huo Keyu, and the other non-powered survivors to help guard the door.
A blinding flash erupted. This time, even Ren Chenxi was caught in the glare. Her vision turned into a white void, and her eyes stung with tears. Even though she had tried to close her eyes before the card hit, the proximity was too close.
Fine, let everyone be blind, she thought. At least those three Rank 4 wolves can’t see either!
Spinning her head toward the other window, she yelled, “Jian Dan! Zhu Kong! Get over here and attack!”
The words had barely left her mouth when she felt something whistling through the air toward her. She instinctively ducked her head to the right, but a sharp pain flared in her left shoulder. A massive force yanked her forward, and her toes barely grazed the floor as she was dragged through the window. The mutant wolf was trying to pull her into the middle of the pack!
“Sister Xi!!!”
The people closest to her were also blinded and had no idea what was happening. However, Jian Dan and the others at the opposite window watched in horror as Ren Chenxi was snatched right out of the building.
“Ngh—” Ren Chenxi let out a low gasp. She raised her right hand, gripping the dagger, and stabbed blindly toward her upper left.
She was certain the Rank 4 wolves were blinded. The reason she had been caught was because she had shouted! The wolf must have tracked her by sound and lunged at the source of the noise. She really had made herself the primary target.
Squeltch. Her blade sank into something fleshy. Ignoring the searing pain in her shoulder, she pulled the dagger out and stabbed repeatedly with everything she had.
“AOOO—” A massive roar erupted right in her ear. The pressure on her shoulder vanished as the wolf let go, and she tumbled to the ground.
“Sister Xi, get back here!”
Jian Dan’s frantic voice came from behind her, while the stench of blood and rot wafted from the front. Ren Chenxi gritted her teeth, swung her dagger in a wide arc to clear the space in front of her, and felt the blade slice through something. Despite the agony in her left shoulder, she pushed herself off the ground using both hands. Just as she prepared to turn and run back to the house, more angry howls echoed—this time from further away.
Damn it. There were still three low-tier wolves without grease, plus two blinded Rank 4s!
Perhaps because she was blind, her other senses were heightened. She clearly heard the front door of the house being thrown open and the sound of chaotic footsteps—both human and beast. They were getting closer… a heavy panting was right in front of her. But at that same moment, a system notification pinged. Was it a warning? A “Life in Danger” alert? Wait… there was another sound, a low, rhythmic rumbling…
The sound of a car engine?
The twenty seconds of blindness finally passed. Ren Chenxi blinked her blurry eyes, and before she could see the scene clearly, another blinding light hit her!
It was from a pair of high-beam car headlights. Against the glare, she saw several long, thin, snake-like objects lash out through the air. Immediately, one agonizing howl after another rang out around her.
When her eyes finally adjusted, she saw a tall, slender silhouette walking toward her, silhouetted against the lights. For a fleeting second, Ren Chenxi felt like she was back in her nightmare. The same long, flowing hair, the same vine whip in her hand, the same graceful stride. But there was a difference… this woman didn’t radiate the same suffocating, dark oppression.
In the nightmare, she had been trapped in a gloomy darkness, facing the fear of having her heart carved out. Here, she was in the light, being rescued from certain death.
And the woman who saved her…
Ren Chenxi stared at the figure standing before her, her expression a mess of conflicting emotions.
“Long time no see, Ren Muhui. I knew you wouldn’t be dead~” The woman’s voice was softer than Ren Chenxi had ever heard it, and her eyes burned with a fire she had never seen before.
Long time no see, Mu Ning.
However.. I am no longer Ren Muhui!
Ren Chenxi twitched her stiff lips and blinked her sore eyes. She was about to brush it off, pretend it was their first meeting, and offer a polite word of thanks, when Mu Ning suddenly reached out to touch her face. Ren Chenxi flinched instinctively, jerking her head to the side to avoid the contact. In that split second, she saw a flash of disappointment in Mu Ning’s eyes… followed by cold fury.
“You’re hiding from me? Ren Muhui!” Mu Ning’s voice returned to its usual icy hardness. Her face darkened as she glared at Ren Chenxi, speaking each word with freezing precision: “I knew it! Your pursuit of me was nothing more than a game to prove your charm, wasn’t it? You lured me in with sweet talk, only to cruelly toss me aside? No way! I’m telling you, Ren Muhui—I don’t care if you actually liked me or just wanted to prove a point. Since you’ve already provoked me, don’t even think about letting go and leaving!!!”
That ruthless look in her eyes made Ren Chenxi’s heart leap. Crap, she had completely forgotten that this Wood Goddess had a 100% “blackened” corruption rating! Was it too late to clarify her identity?
“No, it’s not… I’m not…” I’m not Ren Muhui! I never said those scumbag things!
But Mu Ning didn’t give her a chance to explain. She grabbed Ren Chenxi by the collar and yanked her close. “Not what? Hmm? Don’t move. Look at you, so careless… your face is dirty. Let me wipe it for you…”
Ren Chenxi was frozen by Mu Ning’s erratic shift between ruthlessness and tenderness. At the same time, the rough tug had agitated the wound on her shoulder. She tried to hold it in, but when the cold touch hit her face, she couldn’t help but let out a sharp “Sss!” of pain.
“Trying to hide again?” Mu Ning’s eyes narrowed dangerously.
“No.”
As Ren Chenxi tried once more to explain her identity, several frantic voices called out from behind her.
“Sister Xi!!!”
“Sister Xi, are you okay?”
“Sister Xi, you scared me to death just now… Eh? Who is this beautiful lady?”
“Mu… Senior Sister Mu?!!!”
Taking advantage of the moment Mu Ning was distracted by the others, Ren Chenxi finally blurted out: “Excuse me, can you let go of me first? I’m not Ren Muhui. I’m his sister, Ren Chenxi.”
