My Dating Sim Just Got an Update - Chapter 10
The question of gender identity only occupied Ren Chenxi’s mind for a fleeting moment. Her attention was quickly drawn back to the area beneath the window, where the men’s conversation continued.
“You idiot! At a time like this, all you care about is whether she’s pretty?”
“But Boss, that broad really is gorgeous! She’s way better looking than these other ones. Since she’s so capable, why don’t we.”
The man’s voice dropped, and Ren Chenxi couldn’t make out the rest. However, she noticed that as they spoke, one of the remaining yellow dots on her mini-map suddenly flashed and turned blood-red.
Huh? Just because I’m prettier than her, she’s developed a grudge against me??
Ren Chenxi found it baffling.
Ignoring the woman who had suddenly “defected,” Ren Chenxi kept her eyes glued to the window. Soon, a head popped up again, but it ducked back down before she could react.
“Hey! You! Woman!” a different man shouted from below. “Look seeing as you’re a girl and an evolved human, we don’t want to make things hard for you. We don’t want to be enemies. How about this: put your hands up, walk a little closer, and let’s have a proper chat.”
Hearing the man’s bold demands, Ren Chenxi let out a cold, mocking smirk. She cooperated, raising her hands and taking two steps toward the window.
As she did, the head appeared at the window again, staying visible a bit longer this time before retreating. “Drop the rock in your right hand too!!”
Only the rock in my right hand? Can they not see the card tucked between the index and middle fingers of my left hand? Or do they just think a harmless-looking card isn’t a threat?
Ren Chenxi didn’t waste time overthinking it. She dutifully tossed the stone aside. Upon hearing it hit the ground, two heads popped up simultaneously. They nodded at her with satisfaction, their gazes becoming increasingly lewd and their smiles growing predatory.
“That’s more like it. I’m telling you, don’t try to cross us. We’ve got a fire user and a strength user. As for me, my ability lets me harden my entire skin! Your little pebbles won’t leave a scratch on me!”
Tsk. Morons.
Ren Chenxi frowned in disgust. With a flick of her left hand, a Flash Card spun through the air, streaking toward the bald man on the left. The two men at the window didn’t even react, continuing to leer at her.
“AHHH—MY EYES!!!”
A blinding burst of light exploded. Screams erupted from inside the shop as the two heads vanished back below the sill.
Ren Chenxi had positioned herself about seven meters away, so the flash didn’t affect her. Before she could make her next move, the door of the nearby bus hissed open. The “Corpse Collector” woman, who had been hiding inside, lunged out holding a massive machete and sprinted toward the open supermarket doors.
“Watch out, you only have 20 seconds!” Ren Chenxi shouted a warning.
The woman didn’t look back. She dove into the supermarket, followed by several agonizing screams. Moments later, she emerged, machete dripping with blood, pushing four girls ahead of her toward the bus. Among them was the girl marked as a red dot.
Ren Chenxi gave the “red dot” girl a long, hard look before slowly walking toward the supermarket entrance. Seeing her approach, the woman with the machete gave Ren Chenxi a grateful nod. Ren Chenxi signaled for her to step back.
Calculating the time, the blindness effect was about to wear off. Ren Chenxi stood a few paces from the entrance, glancing sideways into the shop. She saw the group huddled in the far corner. Her eyes met the fierce, vengeful glare of the bald man. She didn’t miss the faint red glow gathering in his right hand.
Moving faster than him, she flicked another Flash Card.
Since the game update, the system had added a combat mode. Ren Chenxi could now see enemy health bars and lock an attack cursor onto a target, which automatically displayed the distance between them.
Currently, she was six meters from the bald man. As he was plunged back into blindness, Ren Chenxi ruthlessly pelted him with sharp stones. Every rock struck him squarely in the head. Within five seconds, his face was a mask of blood, and his health bar was nearly empty.
Thwack! Another fist-sized rock slammed into his skull, finally caving it in. His body slumped over against the burly man beside him, who was still frantically clutching his eyes. His health bar finally hit zero.
The burly man had no idea his companion was dead. When the body slumped against him, he panicked and shoved the corpse away. He had claimed to have a skin-hardening ability, and indeed, his body was now covered in a thick, brown, rock-like layer of skin for protection.
Ren Chenxi wasn’t afraid of the hardened man or the punk with the strength ability. As long as she took out the bald guy who had long-range fire attacks, the remaining three would be easy to handle.
Actually, there had been five men total, but the two ordinary humans had already been dealt with by the “Corpse Collector’s” machete.
“Brother! You bitch!!!”
As the blindness faded, the burly man saw the dead bald man and turned scarlet with rage. He charged at Ren Chenxi.
“Come here! I’ll kill you! You think your stones are harder than my fists?!”
“Careful!!” the “Corpse Collector” yelled, grabbing Ren Chenxi’s shirt to pull her back. “His whole body is petrified! His defense is huge!”
Petrified? How high could his defense be? In Ren Chenxi’s eyes, she could see both his health bar and his level. A Level 3 Evolved. If she treated him like a Level 3 zombie, it should be about the same.
Ren Chenxi used the momentum of being pulled back to retreat a few more steps. Simultaneously, an Explosion Card appeared between her fingers. Due to his stone-like state, the man’s speed was sluggish. The moment he cleared the supermarket doors, Ren Chenxi’s card spun out, aiming straight for his head.
BOOM!
Following a deafening explosion, the headless, hulking body collapsed heavily to the ground.
It seemed the Explosion Card could ignore the defenses of not just Level 3 zombies, but Level 3 Evolved humans as well.
“Long-ge—”
Witnessing the leader’s stone head get blown to bits, the last remaining man—the one with the mohawk collapsed to his knees in terror. Long-ge was the strongest in their group, and yet he had been executed so effortlessly by this woman.
The punk looked at Ren Chenxi with pure horror. Their group of five evolved humans had practically ruled the road wherever they went. Who could have guessed they would run into such a brick wall today? His brothers were dead, but he didn’t want to join them.
“Ma’am. no, Great Auntie. I’m sorry! Please don’t kill me. I was blind, I didn’t know who I was messing with… Spare me, I’m begging you, I’ll kowtow to you.” The man began sobbing, slamming his forehead against the ground repeatedly.
Ren Chenxi ignored his groveling. She stared at him coldly and asked a single question:
“Did you eat people?”
Even in the apocalypse, Ren Chenxi believed a person should have a bottom line. If someone crossed that line, she could no longer view them as human.
“I… uh… no… I…”
Facing her question, the man stammered, unable to give a straight answer.
“He did!”
The “Corpse Collector” answered for him.
“Not only did he eat them, but even when they had plenty of food, these animals still chose to eat people!” Another girl stepped down from the bus, glaring at the punk with visceral hatred.
This girl still showed as a yellow dot on the map. What caught Ren Chenxi’s eye, however, was a long, freshly scarred wound across her face. She wore tattered, brownish-grey clothes that were caked in filth and grime. Even her eyes, though beautifully shaped, were filled with a hollow, grey despair. Looking at her, Ren Chenxi knew she had been through hell—likely to the point where she could no longer trust anyone. Well, at least she isn’t hostile, Ren Chenxi thought, which is better than the ‘red dot’ hiding by the bus door.
“These people stole our food, stole our water, and my friends… on this journey, whenever a girl was played with until she died, they’d start a hotpot that night. They’d eat right in front of us and brag about how fragrant, tender, and delicious it was… Why don’t you tell her? What kind of meat was in that pot!”
I Faced with the girl’s murderous gaze, the punk trembled and scurried backward on his hands. “I didn’t want to! It was Long-ge! Long-ge and the others forced me to eat with them.
“Heh, forced you? You looked pretty happy and satisfied while you were eating!” the scarred girl sneered.
“I… no, I was faking it… If I didn’t act like that, Long-ge would have killed me…”
“But you killed plenty of girls yourself on the way here, didn’t you? You’re a strength user! You’d ‘accidentally’ snap their arms and legs, then crush their ribs, and watch them cough up blood until they died! You did it on purpose!!”
The girl’s voice rose with every sentence until she was practically screaming.
Hearing the accusation, the “Corpse Collector” muttered under her breath, “That’s just torture. He’s sick.”
Ren Chenxi was already looking at the man as if he were a corpse.
“No. I didn’t mean to… I…” Sensing the blatant killing intent in Ren Chenxi’s eyes, the man continued to desperately deny his crimes. “Let me go… I was forced. I was forced!”
“Forget it, don’t waste your breath. Should we just kill him?” The “Corpse Collector” looked at the man with disgust and turned to Ren Chenxi.
At that moment, the scarred girl spoke up again.
“Can you let me be the one to kill him?”
