Misty Nights in Hong Kong - Chapter 4
You’re Not Picky, Anyone Will Do?
Gu Xiangsi furrowed her brows slightly but didn’t connect it to the drunkard from last night.
She had just settled into her workstation when Chen Hui handed her a folder. “Manager Gu, could you deliver this contract?”
Glancing at her schedule, Gu Xiangsi recalled that Sinian Group was near Harbor City.
After hailing a cab, she arrived at Harbor City and stopped in front of a jewelry repair center’s glass counter.
“Can this be fixed?” She pulled a chain from her bag and handed it over.
The clerk, wearing white gloves, examined it carefully. “The clasp is too badly damaged it’ll need to be re-soldered. Two days.”
Gu Xiangsi paid the deposit and repeatedly emphasized, “Please make sure it’s repaired properly.”
Jiang Liangchen was lazily strolling through the mall, a lollipop dangling from his mouth, when someone suddenly bumped into him.
“Ugh-” Gu Xiangsi staggered back.
Beside them, Fu Sinian’s brows twitched almost imperceptibly, his eyes flashing with clear disdain as he remained unmoving.
Just as Gu Xiangsi steadied herself, a mischievous child darted out and threw a ball straight at her.
She stumbled backward again.
In a few quick strides, the man reached her, instinctively bracing her back with his hand just before she could collide with the railing.
But the moment she was steady, he recoiled as if burned, abruptly letting go and taking half a step back.
Gu Xiangsi hadn’t expected to run into Fu Sinian here. Flustered, she glanced toward the repair shop and hastily thanked him.
“Thank you, President Fu. I’ll be going now.”
Clutching the folder, she hurried toward the stairwell.
Noticing her unease, Fu Sinian’s gaze flicked toward the shop. Under the warm lights, the silver chain in the clerk’s hands gleamed coldly.
Memories surged, five years ago, she had flung that necklace into the bushes. He had scoured the entire garden but never found it.
A ripple of emotion stirred within him.
He strode into the shop without hesitation.
Jiang Liangchen froze, then scrambled after him. “Wait, Sinian, are you buying jewelry?”
By the time he finished speaking, Fu Sinian was already at the counter, his voice low and heavy as he stared at the chain that should have vanished long ago. “Who brought this in?”
The clerk looked puzzled, then glanced out the window just as Gu Xiangsi turned the corner.
“It was the young lady who was just here.”
“Give it to me.”
Fu Sinian extended his hand, his expression dark.
“This is a customer’s item for repair-”
Jiang Liangchen tossed his business card onto the counter and raised a brow at the frozen clerk. “Open your eyes, he owns this mall.”
“President Fu!” The clerk hastily greeted him.
Fu Sinian snatched the necklace, clenching it in his palm. His voice was icy. “If she comes asking, tell her to find me.”
With that, he turned and left.
The clerk nodded repeatedly, beads of sweat forming on their forehead.
“Sinian, what’s the deal with this chain?”
Jiang Liangchen caught up just as Fu Sinian tucked the necklace into his inner pocket.
Fu Sinian shot him a sidelong glance. “Too many questions.”
While Jiang Liangchen continued chattering, Fu Sinian stepped into the private elevator.
As the car pulled out of the intersection, Fu Sinian spotted Gu Xiangsi through the rearview mirror, boarding a taxi that passed right in front of them.
Assistant Li noticed Fu Sinian’s gaze first and discreetly followed the cab.
Realizing they were heading the same way, they trailed it for ten minutes until the taxi stopped near Gold Harbor City.
Gu Xiangsi stood in front of the Sinian Building, feeling deeply frustrated. She could have just handed him the documents directly earlier.
What on earth was she so nervous about?
She tilted her head back and took a deep breath.
With a restless heart, she approached the front desk on the first floor, holding the documents in her hand. “I’m here to see your CEO, Mr. Fu.”
The receptionist glanced at her dismissively. “Miss, you need an appointment to see our CEO.”
She gave Gu Xiangsi a once-over jeans, a white T-shirt tucked into a waist cincher, her figure wasn’t bad.
A woman next to the receptionist snorted and leaned over to sneer, “Looks like another one trying to seduce our CEO. Since when does a mere document courier need the CEO’s personal attention?”
The words were loud enough for Gu Xiangsi to hear clearly.
She ignored them and simply repeated her request, “Please inform Mr. Fu’s assistant.”
“Our CEO isn’t someone just anyone can waltz in to see,” the receptionist shot back.
Calmly, Gu Xiangsi reiterated, “I really am just here to deliver documents.”
The receptionist waved her off impatiently. “Then go sit over there and wait. See if our CEO happens to leave work early, you can hand them to him yourself.”
The two receptionists exchanged another mocking laugh before turning back to their gossip, ignoring Gu Xiangsi completely.
This scene was witnessed by Fu Sinian, who had just stepped through the revolving doors while on a phone call.
He stood at a distance, listening for a moment, but didn’t approach immediately.
Hanging up the phone, his eyes turned cold. “You handle the Tsim Sha Tsui project,” he said to Jiang Liangchen.
Jiang was startled and followed his gaze. Huh? Wasn’t that the woman they’d just bumped into at the mall?
Curious!
But with the order given, he reluctantly walked away, glancing back every few steps, while Assistant Li stifled a laugh.
As Gu Xiangsi turned around, her eyes met Fu Sinian’s.
His gaze, usually icy, held a flicker of something she couldn’t quite decipher.
Before she could process it, a strong whiff of roses swept past her as a glamorously made-up woman strode straight toward Fu Sinian.
Standing a few steps away, the woman tilted her head up and smiled at him.
Gu Xiangsi’s gaze froze. That inexplicable softening in his eyes just moments ago now seemed like nothing more than indulgence directed at someone else.
She quickly reined in her emotions. How could she still dare to hope for the light that had once belonged to her?
Now, standing there, she felt trapped, embarrassed and unsure whether to stay or leave.
Just as she lowered her head, pondering what to do with the documents, a tall shadow loomed over her.
She looked up to find Fu Sinian staring straight at her, one hand in his pocket.
Assistant Li stepped forward and asked the receptionist what was going on. After one of them explained, Fu Sinian uttered a single icy word: “Leave.”
The two receptionists were still snickering at Gu Xiangsi when Fu Sinian’s frigid gaze swept over them. “My company has no place for gossips.”
Assistant Li stepped in. “You’re fired.”
The two women froze, utterly baffled by their sudden dismissal.
Fu Sinian turned and strode forward.
Gu Xiangsi remained rooted in place until he paused mid-step and spoke coldly, “Aren’t you coming?”
Only then did she snap out of it and hurry after him.
Inside the elevator, she pressed herself against the side.
The glamorous woman was already waiting inside. When she caught sight of Gu Xiangsi’s face, she stiffened slightly before sidling up to Fu Sinian. “Brother Sinian, who is this young lady?”
Fu Sinian replied indifferently, “A debtor.”
The woman chuckled. “Oh? She looks oddly familiar.”
“Of course she does,” Fu Sinian said flatly. “She’s one of a dime a dozen.”
The woman noticed his expression and curled the corner of her lips.
Assistant Li: “??”
This face is common everywhere?
Gu Xiangsi stiffened slightly, bending slightly as she leaned into the corner of the elevator.
The scent of roses from the woman filled the elevator, and Gu Xiangsi frowned, she disliked such overpowering fragrances.
Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed the woman slightly bowing her head, holding a folder against her chest, brows slightly furrowed as if deep in thought.
Fu Sinian’s gaze lingered on her for a second before coldly shifting away, his tongue pressing against the roof of his mouth.
A phone rang, Eason Chan’s Beneath Mount Fuji.
His pupils contracted briefly before returning to calm, the muscles at the corner of his lips tensing imperceptibly before relaxing.
This was a song she had always loved. The taste in music hadn’t changed, but the person had.
How ironic.
The woman in the corner took out her phone, pressing it close as she answered, “Hey, Shiwei, I’m a bit busy right now.”
Qin Shiwei’s loud voice exploded in the confined space of the elevator.
“Xiangsi! You have to come to the class reunion next week! Those fake-nice girls have been dropping shady comments in the group for days. I specifically invited a few successful, handsome entrepreneurs…”
Gu Xiangsi fumbled to lower the volume but accidentally hit the speaker button instead.
Instantly, the air in the elevator froze.
“Are you listening?”
Qin Shiwei’s voice was especially piercing in the enclosed space. “I’ve done my research Class President Li Hao makes a million a year now, Zhang Mingyu owns three chain stores…”
Gu Xiangsi’s ears burned red, her fingers gripping the edge of her phone like a vise. “Got it. I’ll go with you next week.”
“It’s about time you broke your lifelong single streak!” Qin Shiwei continued, relentless. “With a body like yours, those men would-”
Click!
Gu Xiangsi abruptly hung up, holding her breath.
The temperature in the elevator seemed to drop ten degrees. The hairs on the back of her neck stood on end.
Even the November wind wasn’t this biting.
She instinctively looked up only to meet Fu Sinian’s icy gaze.
The man loosened his tie with slender fingers, eyelids half-lowered, exuding an air of detached scrutiny.
“It seems Manager Gu’s standards for a partner…”
He spoke slowly, each word like a blade scraping against skin, “are as impressive as your project management skills.”
His Adam’s apple bobbed, releasing a near-silent scoff.
“Truly astonishing.”
The elevator dinged as it stopped at the 28th floor. Fu Sinian took half a step out before suddenly turning back, his eyes frigid.
“Shall I book you a health check-up? After all…”
His gaze swept over her meaningfully.
“You’re not picky, anyone will do?”
