Cheng Fu vaguely heard this sentence, but her head was throbbing with such intense pain that she had no time to think.
On an endless ice plain, the wind howled and snow swirled in a chaotic frenzy. Shivering uncontrollably, she tremulously opened her eyes, only to be stung by the blinding white landscape. Her pupils suddenly constricted. Specks of snow lashed against her taut face, a chill so deep it felt as if it were penetrating her very skull.
She felt as if her cranium were being soaked in ice water it was a bone chilling cold.
Because at this moment, reflected in her wide, rounded pupils, was a giant beast covered in long, frost-white fur, its eyes glowing a sinister crimson.
Cheng Fu stared at the massive creature without blinking. The beast reared its head, revealing jagged white fangs with bits of blood-red meat from its last meal still stuck between them. The stench of the beast’s breath hit her like a wave. With its thunderous, angry howl, Cheng Fu’s frozen blood finally began to pump, rushing to her head in an instant.
No longer dazed, she lifted her legs which had almost lost all sensation and began to run for her life.
The white-furred beast let out a low growl, the red light in its eyes intensifying. Its massive hooves struck the ice, making the ground tremble precariously. The sound of cracking ice echoed continuously; Cheng Fu had every reason to believe the beast would stomp through the floor at any second.
The ice was both slippery and hard, making it nearly impossible to run fast. As a native of the South, she hadn’t even crossed the Qinling-Huaihe line in her eighteen years of life; running on ice was completely beyond her syllabus. Moreover, her opponent was a ferocious beast that lived in the polar ice plains year-round.
Her legs were stiff and shaking. With one wrong step, she slipped and slammed hard onto the ice.
A series of dull thuds echoed. Cheng Fu lay face-down on the ice, her eyes vacant, knowing the beast was inching closer to her position. The blood in her legs felt completely congealed; she could no longer command them.
Thump. Thump. Thump.
Cheng Fu gritted her teeth, digging her fingers into the ice. She dragged her numb, aching knees forward, inch by inch, exhausting every ounce of strength to crawl.
The beast was quite intelligent. Its red eyes stayed locked on the slowly moving prey on the ground. Knowing victory was certain, it developed a cruel urge to toy with its catch. The frequency of its heavy steps slowed.
As if celebrating this guaranteed feast, it stopped just a few paces from Cheng Fu, opened its mouth, and let out a piercing screech. Cheng Fu’s eardrums throbbed with pain as thick blood began to trickle down from her ears. The weather was so cold that the blood froze against her earlobes, snapping off and clattering onto the ice as she crawled.
She didn’t want to die. She didn’t understand why a moment ago she was sitting in an air-conditioned room playing on her phone, and the next, she was stranded in the snow.
The roaring stopped. The giant beast raised its hoof and stomped the ice right in front of her, yet it delayed the final strike. Its crimson eyes scanned the human “toothpick” before it, tirelessly waiting to see a look of abject terror on her face.
However, it didn’t get its wish. Cheng Fu continued to crawl slowly, her eyes bloodshot and filled with stubborn defiance.
Losing patience, the beast finally stopped stomping and lunged with its mouth open to bite her.
Everything seemed to stand still. Cheng Fu’s vision blurred.
The wind and snow suddenly intensified, becoming unnaturally fierce, as if it wanted to scrape the flesh off anything on the ice plain. Bitter wind carried a flurry of snow against her face. Cheng Fu finally ran out of strength and collapsed softly on the ice, motionless.
Her eyelashes were coated in snow, and her limbs were frozen stiff. But abruptly, she felt a trace of warmth spread from her waist.
She was being gently lifted by a warm hand.
Cheng Fu’s gaze was somewhat scattered. She leaned into the strength of that hand to stand up, squinting through the haze to see the scene before her.
The giant beast’s head had been split perfectly down the middle. One could clearly see yellowish brains oozing from the crack, winding down to her feet. Amidst the freezing snow, the brains were steaming. The beast’s massive, furry body remained standing on the spot, rigid like a thick pillar of fur stuck in the snow.
Have you seen enough? a cold, indifferent female voice rang out.
Cheng Fu was already exhausted. Having no strength left, she limply tilted her head. Her wandering eyes caught a glimpse of the person supporting her—a porcelain-skinned beauty with cascading white hair.
She was stunningly beautiful, but her expression was cold, looking as though she had never been touched by the dust of the mortal world. A blooming white snow lotus was adorned on her forehead, further accentuating her vivid, clear beauty and dark eyes.
The beauty slowly lowered her gaze, looking at the Cheng Fu she was holding. Her eyes lacked any particular emotion.
With a clink, a long sword gleaming with cold light was sheathed. She said coldly: “With no skills to your name, coming to this ice plain… have you no regard for your life?”
Cheng Fu didn’t answer. Lifting her eyelids, she saw a group of people in uniform behind the white-haired beauty. They all looked like teenagers, wearing white casual clothes with tightly cinched waistbands, looking like martial artists.
She said weakly and dryly, Thank you! This, how should I address my benefactor?
Cheng Fu thought to herself: This beauty is incredibly powerful. That sword strike just now even summoned a localized blizzard. Truly impressive. What was the term for this level of combat power in cultivation novels? Transcendent.
The icy beauty gave her another cold look: Yan Li.
Facing Yan Li directly, Cheng Fu was startled to find that her eyes were a bottomless, pitch black a sharp contrast to her snow-white skin and hair. As her eyes shifted, the sheer vividness of her beauty made Cheng Fu’s heart skip a beat.
Dazzled by such beauty, Cheng Fu’s mind became muddled. Her palms grew sweaty, and she instinctively flinched. Then, she felt a slight itch in her palm, and with a poof, a small, dark purple flower bloomed right out of it.
Cheng Fu looked embarrassed. At that moment, Yan Li was looking at her expressionlessly, taking everything in.
It was quite unexpected.
Yan Li watched coldly, her gaze gradually shifting away from the purple flower. After a moment, she gave a somewhat displeased laugh: Luoshen Island.
You traveled ten thousand miles, risking your life to come to this ice plain just who are you looking for?
Cheng Fu gave a pale smile, her limp limbs becoming somewhat uncontrollable. Having lacked energy for too long, her brain was in chaos and her consciousness was fading. Her eyes reflected nothing but Yan Li’s cold, elegant figure. Without thinking, she blurted out:
Looking for you.
Instantly, the white ice plain fell into a dead silence.
The short-clothed youths behind Yan Li stared with wide eyes. Which family did this magic cultivator come from? Half-dead already, yet she dares to flirt with the Peerless Sword Deity?
Yan Li looked at Cheng Fu for a moment without expression. Surprisingly, she didn’t take offense. She simply let go of Cheng Fu and turned to walk away, her voice carrying clearly through the wind and snow:
If you don’t want to die here, follow me back to the Academy first.
The group of youths in white followed Yan Li. Cheng Fu dazed for a second before following with unsteady steps. She was alone and lacked any survival skills; staying on this vast ice plain was indeed a death sentence. Now that this beauty named Yan Li was willing to save her, Cheng Fu was smart enough to seize the chance.
Though she couldn’t figure out the situation yet, or who this sword cultivator named Yan Li was, at least there was a glimmer of hope.
Yan Li seemed to have magical legs, covering dozens of yards in the blink of an eye. The youths behind her weren’t slow either, quickly leaving Cheng Fu behind. Being injured and lacking spiritual power to protect herself, Cheng Fu was frozen stiff. She could only manage to walk at the very end of the line, gradually losing pace.
The snow was heavy and visibility was low. The group ahead slowly became a cluster of blurred silhouettes.
At the very front, Yan Li seemed to perceive something. She turned her head and said to the youth closest to her: She’s falling behind. Go get her and bring her into the group.
The youth answered in a low voice.
Brought back into the formation, Cheng Fu finally felt normal again. She didn’t know what kind of supernatural power Yan Li’s follower used, but she was now being pulled along by a youth using a strange, invisible force. Constant warmth flowed from that slender thread of power, instantly warming her entire body.
Cheng Fu breathed a long sigh of relief. With her hands and feet warm, her brain finally came back online. She felt as though she had reached home, and her whole body went limp. Since someone was dragging her anyway, there was no need to waste energy; being a “salted fish” was the right move.
The white-clad youth felt the weight in his hand increase. He turned back to see the dead fish that was Cheng Fu; his mouth twitched, but he said nothing, diligently continuing to exert his power.
Resting like a salted fish, Cheng Fu grew drowsy. Just as she was about to fall asleep, the female voice from earlier returned to her mind.
Hello, I am your acting system, No. 068.
The slightly dull female voice paused, then continued: I apologize for involving you in this transaction. There were some issues during the soul-body transfer, resulting in your soul being loaded into this body.
Cheng Fu was startled awake, lazily communicating with the system in her mind: Can I go back?
068: Apologies. To ensure integrity in soul-body transactions, soul exchange is mandatory until the pre-set system tasks are completed. Now that this error has occurred, I will contact headquarters. Later, I will provide you with some items from this world as compensation to assist you in your tasks. Items will be issued to your world storage within 24 hours.
The dull voice stated the fact that she was trapped on this pirate ship with no way off. Cheng Fu half-closed her eyes, feeling utterly helpless.
I will explain the specifics to you later. Host, you have just survived a life-or-death situation and need to rest well to better complete your tasks.
Cheng Fu frowned but said nothing. She was indeed extremely tired. Her ears were still throbbing with pain, and the blood trapped inside felt very uncomfortable. Closing her eyes, she soon fell into a deep sleep.
