It Seems Like My Senior Seems to Like Me - Chapter 32
After leaving the police station, the fear of being watched from behind lessened a bit. The invisible shackles around her neck were blown away by the warm wind, and she felt refreshed, her mood liberated.
Indeed, having someone by your side makes walking out of the shadows much easier.
Pei Suye descended the steps first. Her wide-leg pants with vertical stripes covered her ankles, and her caramel-colored coat fit snugly at the waist, its length reaching the knees, making her figure appear tall and elegant.
Her slender fingers pointed east along the street:
“Up ahead is a photo studio. Let’s go.”
She remembered that Ye Wanjia wanted to print some photos. But what Ye Wanjia remembered was Pei Suye’s pan-fried buns.
“Senior, shall we get some buns first?”
Pei Suye glanced at her watch, her calm eyes as serene as a landscape hidden behind mist. She only said, “It’s already closed at this hour. Next time.”
She walked down the steps, her grayish-brown hair tied into a loose, casual braid that rested lazily on her shoulder. Stray strands fluttered in the wind, giving her a natural beauty.
Ye Wanjia’s gaze froze. Whatever she had been saying a moment ago was forgotten. All her attention was absorbed in the picture of Pei Suye blending seamlessly with the scenery.
They went to the photo studio to print the pictures, and then casually browsed the adjacent store.
On the second floor, in the accessories section, Area A was entirely devoted to brooches. Ye Wanjia remembered Pei Suye liked wearing brooches, and today she was wearing a silver bee-shaped one.
Her browsing gaze paused, landing on the far right end of the top row.
Made from delicate material, the brooch was shaped like a maple leaf, with clear lines along the edges and hollowed-out veins in the center, simple yet carrying an understated, artistic elegance. Its overall color was rose gold, warm and harmonious—just like her: low-key on the outside but with a gentle, refined character inside.
Looking toward someone not far away, she saw Pei Suye picking and choosing at a shelf piled with boxes, not noticing her at all.
Quick and nimble, she tiptoed to take it down and dashed to the cashier.
“Hello, that’ll be 88 yuan.”
“Ah?”
Ye Wanjia was caught off guard. Such a small brooch cost nearly four or five days of her living expenses. But then she thought, it wasn’t easy to find a brooch that matched Pei Suye’s temperament. As she pictured Pei Suye wearing it, dimples forming on her cheeks, she felt it was worth it.
After leaving the store, Ye Wanjia pondered when she should give the brooch to Pei Suye. But Pei Suye made the first move, extending a bag forward—a pink, square, sturdy paper bag swaying slightly in midair.
“This is for you,” she said.
“Huh?” Ye Wanjia froze for a moment, then came to her senses. “For me?”
Pei Suye nodded. “Mm.”
Ye Wanjia held it with both hands. Slender fingers opened the bag and took out a square box from the bottom. Her eyes fell on the product name on the front.
“A personal alarm?”
She didn’t know what it was for. Wrapped in soft pink, it didn’t look like anything related to alarms.
Pei Suye explained, “You can carry this with you. If you ever feel unsafe, pull out the metal pin on top—it will sound an alarm.”
As she spoke, Ye Wanjia unpacked it, taking out a lip balm-sized alarm, examining it carefully. Indeed, there was a metal pin on top. She tried pulling it out.
“Waaah! Waaaah! Waaaah!”
The tiny device immediately emitted a shrill, piercing alarm, nearly bursting eardrums.
“This… this… this!”
“Quick, put it back!”
Thankfully, Pei Suye reacted swiftly, helping her replace the pin and apologizing to the surrounding people, temporarily calming the situation.
Ye Wanjia broke out in a light sweat. “Phew… that’s so loud.”
Pei Suye nodded. “Otherwise, how is it an alarm? You’ll carry it with you. If anything happens, pull it out. The sound is louder than your own call for help, so someone will come quickly.”
A girl always understands another girl’s feelings. She knew what Ye Wanjia was afraid of and what she worried about. Rather than a thousand warnings to “not go out at night,” a more considerate approach was to accompany her to report to the police and give her a device that could provide peace of mind.
“Senior, thank you.”
Ye Wanjia carefully put the alarm on her keychain and packed the box and bag into her schoolbag.
Pei Suye was always so generous, handing over gifts directly with ease.
Unlike her… buying a brooch, she still hesitated about how to phrase it.
The subway ride was two stations, but due to the evening rush, the car was packed. Both had a height advantage and held onto the overhead handles, but the crowd pushed them close together. Ye Wanjia stood behind Pei Suye, eyes downcast, nose catching the faint scent of her shampoo lingering in her hair—light and floral, like lilies unfolding in the morning breeze.
So pleasant.
Ye Wanjia felt like a guilty thief, lowering her head, her flushed cheeks hidden by the noise of the crowd.
The subway station was three kilometers from the dorms. Each took a bicycle and rode along Wutong Road to Ginkgo Avenue, then branched off toward the dormitory area. Ye Wanjia’s dorm was closer, so Pei Suye “coincidentally” sent her to the building.
Two uphill stretches, one downhill, seven left turns, eight right turns, one U-turn.
Finally, three kilometers later, Ye Wanjia had gathered her courage. She parked and ran to Pei Suye’s bicycle, loosening a strap of her backpack and taking out the fist-sized square box, handing it over.
“This brooch is for you, Senior.”
Her expression was still shy, but she had the courage to speak.
Pei Suye paused, looked at the logo on the box, and smiled faintly. “You bought this especially for me?”
“Yes.” Ye Wanjia’s gaze was sincere. “That night, and today, you helped me so much. This small gift is to thank you. It may not be valuable, but it’s my heartfelt gratitude.”
Pei Suye’s eyes flickered. She took the box, its transparent top revealing the maple leaf brooch resting calmly inside.
This was the first gift from Xiao Ye to her.
A slight curve at her lips revealed rare good mood.
“Then I won’t refuse. Thank you.”
Under the alternating light and shadow of the wutong trees, Pei Suye opened the box, tilting her head down. “Could you help me wear it?”
Ye Wanjia cheerfully obliged, and the silver bee brooch she was wearing today paired perfectly with the maple leaf.
The clock struck six, announcing the arrival of night. The light gradually dimmed, the colors of objects deepening, as if signaling that the feelings hidden in their hearts were also growing stronger.
Upon entering the dormitory, Ye Wanjia hummed a little tune but was stopped by Wei Xiaoxiao, who mischievously asked, as if speaking as a family member:
“You’ve already reached this stage, huh?”
Ye Wanjia was a bit stunned. “Which stage?”
Exchanging gifts?
But Wei Xiaoxiao spoke a shocking line, lips forming a terrifying story:
“You’ve already touched her chest, huh?”
Ye Wanjia jumped in fright. “No way!!!”
