I'm Not Playing This Vicious Female Supporting Character Anymore! - Chapter 13
After finishing her diary entry, Rong Xi felt a sudden sense of lightness.
A knock came from outside. She quickly stuffed her diary into her drawer and called out, “Come in.”
Mother Rong entered the room.
Qin Yuzhen stood nearby, watching Mother Rong enter Rong Xi’s room. The door remained slightly ajar, leaving a narrow gap.
According to the original plot, Qin Yuzhen would overhear Mother Rong confiding her inner turmoil to Rong Xi, and then the original protagonist would begin to lose her mind.
Curiosity piqued, Qin Yuzhen took a few steps forward, eager to hear what they were saying.
“Xixi, she hasn’t been bullying you, has she?”
“No,” Rong Xi replied. “How could my sister possibly bully me?”
“Someone called me today, saying you were crying at school because she bullied you.” Mother Rong took Rong Xi’s hand. “If she’s bullying you, you must tell me. In my heart, you’re my real daughter.”
Rong Xi paused. “She really hasn’t bullied me. Who’s spreading those lies? We were playing badminton, and I lost and cried because I can’t handle losing. She even let me win on purpose, but I still lost… I’ve been practicing for so long, yet I’m still no match for her even though she doesn’t practice at all.”
“Xixi, you’re just too soft-hearted,” Mother Rong continued. “That child… after being out there for so many years, she’s grown twisted. She still refuses to call me ‘Mom,’ and I suspect she even resents us. She might take her anger out on you.”
Qin Yuzhen: …
No wonder the original host went mad. What kind of people are these?
“It’s not like that!” Rong Xi protested, growing anxious. “Mom, Sister just got back. It’s natural she can’t call you ‘Mom’ yet. Don’t read too much into it. She’s been through so much hardship out there, her heart must be heavy. Right now, we should be showing her more care and concern.”
“Host, to the original host, Rong Xi’s words sounded exactly like something Bai Lian would say,” the System remarked.
“Indeed.” After all, according to the original script, the original host and Rong Xi hadn’t interacted much. Unfamiliar with Rong Xi, it was understandable that the original host would interpret these words as an attempt at sowing discord.
“We’ve already brought her back, given her money, and tomorrow we’re taking her shopping for clothes. We’re being kind to her, but she’s still unhappy! She refuses to even change her surname. What more does she want?” Mother Rong continued.
“You still don’t want to reveal her identity, even now. As your own daughter, she can’t even call you ‘Mom’ or ‘Dad’ in front of others. It must be so painful for her,” Rong Xi said, on the verge of tears.
“We’ve already explained the reasons to her,” Mother Rong said. In her view, once the reasons were explained, acceptance was the only option; there was no other path to choose.
Qin Yuzhen felt like laughing. She turned and walked away, hands in her pockets. “This is straight out of a melodramatic TV soap opera.”
“Rong Xi will probably blame herself,” the System said.
“That girl’s personality…” Qin Yuzhen trailed off, but the System understood the unspoken sentiment.
Rong Xi escorted Mother Rong out of the room, feeling drained. She glanced at Qin Yuzhen’s room in the distance, took a deep breath, wiped her tears, and went downstairs to wash a plate of fruit before bringing it upstairs.
Qin Yuzhen wasn’t surprised by the knock at the door. She opened it to find Rong Xi standing there.
The rims of Rong Xi’s eyes were still red.
“You were crying?”
“No, why would I cry? I just rubbed my eyes a little.” Rong Xi handed the fruit plate to Qin Yuzhen.
“Is it poisoned?” Qin Yuzhen glanced at the fruit platter but didn’t take it.
Rong Xi frowned slightly. “How could it be poisoned? I just washed some fruit for you out of kindness. If you don’t want it, I’ll eat it myself.”
“Fine, put it on my desk.” Qin Yuzhen shifted to make room.
Rong Xi looked at Qin Yuzhen and muttered under her breath, “A princess? You sure have a lot of drama.”
“I really am a princess,” Qin Yuzhen said with a smile, sitting down on the sofa and tilting her chin slightly. “Don’t I look the part?”
Rong Xi picked up a cherry, suddenly reluctant to give her any fruit.
“Weren’t you saving these for me?” Qin Yuzhen stared at Rong Xi’s hand.
Rong Xi popped the cherry into her mouth and sat down. “Um…”
“Hmm?”
“I want to talk to you about something.”
“What about?” Qin Yuzhen leaned back against the sofa, watching Rong Xi.
Seeing Qin Yuzhen’s serious expression, Rong Xi suddenly lost her courage. “It’s just, I, uh… you…”
“Never mind, don’t say anything,” Qin Yuzhen said, glancing at Rong Xi. “Your position is awkward, and you’re not suited to be a family mediator. Sometimes it’s best to just let things be.”
Rong Xi froze, looking at Qin Yuzhen, then shivered. “You heard?”
“Mm.”
Rong Xi fell silent, lowering his head. “I think she misunderstands you.”
“So you think I didn’t take my anger out on you?”
“I think you weren’t angry at all, just… simply…” Trying to tease me out of pure malice.
Of course, Rong Xi didn’t dare finish the thought.
“I think some things should be cleared up. Long-standing misunderstandings are bad for everyone.”
Rong Xi clenched his fists. “I think I should move out, but I don’t know how to bring it up right now. If I said anything, she’d just start imagining all sorts of nonsense.”
“So just pretend you didn’t see anything. It’s simple. Why force everyone to be all loving and harmonious?”
“I think that’s how families should be.”
“Your world is too idealistic,” Qin Yuzhen remarked.
“It’s not that idealistic. I just want things to be a little better,” Rong Xi replied after a pause. “Of course, that’s a bit selfish of me. If you really don’t like it, then let it stay as it is. The way it is now isn’t bad. After all, genuine feelings aren’t something you can just create out of nowhere.”
Qin Yuzhen looked at Rong Xi, grabbed a handful of cherries, and stuffed them into her hand. “Go back and sleep. Since you’re bored, do some extra homework.”
Rong Xi: …
“Seventeen-year-old girls are so naive.”
“I’m seventeen too,” Rong Xi said, holding the cherries.
“But I’m not as naive as you. If I didn’t know you were a sweet, simple girl, and you came to me with this now, I’d think you were provoking and showing off. It wouldn’t have any persuasive effect at all.” Qin Yuzhen took a sip of water.
Rong Xi thought back on what she’d just said. Now that she considered it carefully, it did sound a bit off.
“That’s why I’m telling you to do extra homework. Pretend you didn’t see anything, and keep your mouth shut.”
Rong Xi couldn’t figure out how she’d ended up being lectured by Qin Yuzhen.
“If you want to stay close to them, then keep doing that. I have no objections,” Qin Yuzhen said, tapping her crossed legs. “Do you have anything else to say?”
“No,” Rong Xi said dryly.
“Then you can leave now.” Qin Yuzhen gave a friendly smile and gestured toward the door.
Rong Xi left, cherries in hand.
“Host, your temper has improved quite a bit.”
“Mainly because of the fruit.” Qin Yuzhen looked at the half-empty plate. “Ah, I gave too much.”
System: ……
