I’m Not Falling for the Vampire Princess! - Chapter 6
Chapter 6
“I… I don’t know why she was in my house either.”
Clearly, it was the original Jona’s fault, yet Jona felt inexplicably guilty at this moment.
Suika’s gaze remained gentle. “I don’t mean to blame you; I’m just reminding you to be careful.”
To be careful?
Jona wasn’t sure how much Suika knew about the history between the original Jona and Fanier, but her intuition told her that Suika was hinting at something. “Do you mean that what happened last night… was Fanier tipping off the Council of Elders?”
As soon as she said it, Jona instinctively shook her head. “No, I don’t think Fanier would do something like that.”
Fanier was ruthless and arrogant, but she disdained playing dirty. Informing on someone behind their back really didn’t seem like Fanier’s style.
“You seem to be quite close with Fanier?”
Suika’s expression was as calm as ever, but Jona mentally cried out in alarm. Did I just expose myself?
Before she could think of an excuse, Suika offered her a small smile. “Being brought to the Council of Elders so early, you must be starving.”
Terrified that Suika might pull a Fanier and offer her arm for blood, Jona shook her head vigorously. “I’m not hungry.”
“At this time, the West Street morning market shouldn’t be over yet. Perhaps there will be fresh tomatoes there. Do you really not plan to take a look?”
Tomatoes?
Human food!
“I’ll go!” Jona nodded emphatically.
She had been worrying about where to find food; she hadn’t expected Suika to be so considerate. Jona followed Suika to the marketplace. The originally bustling market fell silent in an instant. The blood-servants on the street avoided them one after another, as if they were afraid of something.
“What’s wrong with them?”
“Perhaps, like you, they dislike the sunlight.”
Jona looked ahead at the scorching sun and nodded. “Sunlight is indeed annoying. Luckily I have this umbrella.”
If only the umbrella wasn’t encrusted with heavy gemstones, it would be even better, she thought.
At the market, there were many types of food. Various vegetables and fruits, some freshly misted with water, looked very tempting. While Jona was hesitating, Suika said gently, “Tomatoes don’t store easily; you can buy some carrots as well. The juice of these two foods is also red. If made into a drink, it won’t arouse the suspicion of other vampires.”
“How did you know…” Jona’s eyes widened. Just as she was about to ask, Suika interrupted her. “The morning market is ending soon. Quickly see what else you need. Staying here as a vampire is far too conspicuous.”
Jona hurriedly agreed. She planned to stock up on carrots. Although she didn’t like them much, at least they could fill her stomach. But how was she supposed to get so many carrots home? Jona still didn’t know the way back.
Suika seemed to read her mind. Before Jona could speak, Suika placed a gold coin on a stall and said to the trembling owner, “Deliver this cart of carrots to Manor 306 on East Street. From now on, deliver some carrots and fresh tomatoes every week.”
“Yes, yes, of course.” The stall owner took the coin and nodded repeatedly.
Leaving the morning market, Jona couldn’t help but ask, “That stall owner seemed very afraid of you?”
“And what about you? Are you also afraid of me?” Suika looked into Jona’s eyes, her gaze revealing that sorrowful expression again, as if she would shatter if Jona nodded.
“You are gentle, kind, and very easy to talk to, not fierce like Fanier… of course I’m not afraid of you!”
Hearing Jona say this, the corners of Suika’s mouth curled slightly. “It’s almost noon; the sun will be very harsh. I’ll send you back first.”
“Thank you, Princess Suika.”
Although Jona wasn’t sure how the disrupted plot would develop, at this moment, she felt incredibly at ease.
Upon returning to the manor, the carrots had already been delivered to the courtyard. Suika, as usual, stopped at the gate, not even stepping into the yard. Looking at the pile of carrots, Suika looked a bit apologetic. “It was inconsiderate of me; I should have arranged for some blood-servants for you.”
Jona waved her hands dismissively. “No need, I think being alone is quite good.”
“But living here by yourself, many things might be inconvenient. And… not very safe. I will submit a request to the Council of Elders to move up the wedding date.”
“Huh?” Jona instinctively felt some resistance, but for a moment, she couldn’t think of a reason to refuse. If she refused, would it anger Princess Suika? But if she didn’t refuse, she couldn’t actually marry her, could she?
“It’s fine if you are unwilling, but if you live here alone, you must be careful about your safety.” After saying this, Suika turned to leave, looking somewhat dejected.
“Wait a moment.” Jona summoned her courage and called out to Suika.
“Have you made up your mind?” Suika asked, looking a bit uncertain.
Jona lightly pursed her red lips. “Um… I want to learn magic. Can you give me a magic book? Even the simplest kind is fine!”
“Alright, I’ll have someone deliver one to you later.” After agreeing, Suika left without looking back.
Watching Suika’s retreating figure, Jona felt a bit worried. Did her reaction just now hurt Suika? Jona quickly shook her head; now was not the time for that. The priority was moving the carrots into the house.
Jona worked alone to move the carrots to the storage room. Because she had to hold an umbrella in one hand and carry carrots in the other, it took her twenty trips. By the time she finished tidying the storage room, she was exhausted. Jona sat on the wool carpet, gently rubbing her aching arms.
Just as she wanted to take a good rest, the doorbell suddenly rang. The sharp sound gave her a start. It couldn’t be Princess Fanier again, could it? No, someone like Fanier wouldn’t politely ring the doorbell. Breaking through the door was more her style.
Jona opened the door warily. A young girl in a maid’s uniform stood outside. The maid pulled out a brown paper package and said respectfully, “Miss Jona, this is the magic book Princess Suika prepared for you.”
The brown paper was wrapped tightly and tied with a thin hemp rope holding a single black rose. “Time was short, so Princess Suika couldn’t find a ribbon. Please forgive us, Miss Jona.”
“It’s no problem. Please thank Princess Suika for me.”
Jona took the package, and after closing the door, she let out a visible sigh of relief. Thank goodness it wasn’t Fanier. Jona eagerly tore open the package; the dark red magic book had some weight to it.
“Great! With this magic book, I won’t have to be afraid of Fanier anymore!”
“Really? Let me see what kind of magic Miss Jona plans to use against me.” Fanier jumped in through the window.
Jona’s hand jerked, and the magic book slipped from her grip. Seeing the heavy book about to smash her foot, Fanier teleported in front of her and caught it. Fanier’s fingers flicked as she flipped open the book. Looking at the text inside, she nearly burst out laughing.
“Magic to move dark clouds to block the sun, magic to summon caterpillars to eat thorn vines, magic to grow cherry tomatoes… Suika really went through a lot of trouble to find such a low-level magic book.”
Jona’s eyes widened in disbelief. Did the original host really have to start learning from such basic magic? Or in Suika’s eyes, was this the only kind of magic she could learn?
However, these spells actually sounded quite practical. Although they weren’t offensive, they could at least keep her from being burned by the sun. Jona snatched the book back from Fanier and hugged it protectively to her chest. “Even if these spells are basic, they are very important to me!”
“Oh? Is the magic important, or is it because this book was a gift from Suika, making it extra special in your eyes?”
Seeing Fanier approach step by step, Jona explained hurriedly, “It’s obviously because I need magic! If I don’t know any magic at all, how am I supposed to survive!”
“I never imagined Miss Jona would have such resolve. In that case, why did you burn the high-level magic book I gave you back then? Was it because you didn’t like it? Or did Miss Jona just want to humiliate me in public?”
Jona: ???
The original host was way too wasteful! How could she burn such a precious thing?
“If I said I was possessed by a ghost back then, would you believe me?”
“Your lies are becoming more and more absurd.” Fanier coldly dropped those words, then walked to the window. She lifted her leg and, with a light leap, jumped out.
“What was that? Jumping in through the window just to make a couple of sarcastic remarks?” Jona grumbled, but breathed a sigh of relief because Fanier hadn’t bitten her.
She wasn’t in the mood to ponder why Fanier had come. Instead, she sat at the desk and hurried to open the magic book. Learning magic should be done early, especially in such a dangerous place. Jona believed that with hard work, there would definitely be results.
But when she prepared to study with full confidence, she was instantly dumbfounded.
She could not read!
