Chapter 5: Your Senior Jiang is Over Here…
That young psychological doctor actually attended the same university.
Beyond the initial shock, Qi Xu was mostly overjoyed that he could retrieve his wallet. It was a birthday gift from his grandmother before she passed away, and he had used it for many years.
He immediately replied to the message: Thank you, Senior. When would be a convenient time for me to come pick it up?
The person on the other end seemed busy, replying only after a long pause: I’ll be at school all day today. You can come by anytime.
Unfortunately, Qi Xu had a full schedule today, so he could only head over after his last class in the afternoon.
To show his gratitude, he specifically bought a dessert to bring along.
Standing outside the teaching and research office, however, Qi Xu hit a snag. He had forgotten to ask for the person’s name, and he hadn’t memorized any distinct features from the previous day.
Leaning against the wall, he sent a text. After waiting a few minutes without a reply, Qi Xu tried calling.
The phone rang for a long time but no one picked up.
Once the call timed out, Qi Xu peeked through the half-open door, scanning the room.
The office was filled with desks and quite a few people, which made his head spin.
As he was struggling, a particularly thin male student walked up behind him. Qi Xu locked eyes with him and silently moved out of the doorway.
But the student didn’t go in. Instead, he stared intently at Qi Xu’s face, realizing something a few seconds later: “Oh, it’s you! You’re here to see Senior Jiang to get your wallet, right?”
This was the same junior student Jiang Yingshen had asked to find Qi Xu’s contact information the night before.
The face in the consultation records had been strikingly beautiful, so he had taken a few extra looks.
Qi Xu blinked. Although he didn’t know how this person knew him, he was currently a lifesaver.
The student was very enthusiastic, pushing the door open and pointing the way: “Senior Jiang is sitting in that spot by the window. He should be reading literature. Just go in and find him.”
This was Qi Xu’s first time entering a doctoral research office. It was much larger than he imagined. He followed the direction indicated and indeed saw a man sitting by the window.
Qi Xu lightened his steps and walked inward.
Halfway there, the aisle was blocked by several cardboard boxes filled with odds and ends, leaving only enough room for one person to pass. Qi Xu wasn’t paying close attention and almost bumped into someone while navigating the boxes.
He took half a step back and looked up to apologize politely: “I’m sorry.”
The person he nearly hit looked down, staring at Qi Xu in silence for a few seconds.
Seeing that the man remained stationary, Qi Xu glanced at the mug in his hand and whispered a reminder: “Excuse me?”
The man frowned slightly, but eventually stepped aside to let him through.
Qi Xu maneuvered around the obstacles and brushed past him, not noticing the look the man cast his way.
He soon reached the window. For safety’s sake, Qi Xu stopped about half a meter behind the seated man and observed him.
Unlike the uniform white coat at the hospital, the man today was wearing a black windbreaker. Likely having forgotten to groom himself in a morning rush, a few strands of hair at the back of his head were sticking up. He was currently making notes on an English research paper on his computer. Several psychology-related books were spread across the desk, next to a half-finished cup of coffee.
Compared to the adjacent seats, this one could even be described as “messy.”
At least this seat feels like a living person sits here, Qi Xu couldn’t help but think.
When the man tilted his head slightly, Qi Xu noticed he was wearing glasses, making him even more certain that this was the person he was looking for.
He crept closer, but the man was wearing headphones and was too focused to notice the person appearing beside him.
Left with no choice, Qi Xu reached out a finger and poked him: “Senior, I’m here for my things.”
The poked man turned around, took off his headphones, and looked over.
Qi Xu didn’t notice the momentary daze in the man’s eyes. He placed the small cake he brought on the desk and repeated: “I’m here for my wallet.”
Recalling the name the student had used earlier, Qi Xu added sweetly: “Senior Jiang.”
However, before the person in front of him could react, a cool, indifferent voice came from behind him.
“Your Senior Jiang is over here.”
The smile on Qi Xu’s face instantly froze. He turned around stiffly.
Standing behind him was the man who had just made way for him, holding that familiar mug.
The man looked at him quietly. It was impossible to tell how long he had been watching.
Qi Xu stared at the face in front of him for several seconds, then glanced at the man sitting down, and finally had to accept a harsh reality—
He had the wrong person. Again.
“…” Qi Xu scratched his burning cheek, trying to save face. “Uh, I tried calling just now, but it didn’t go through.”
“I didn’t have my phone on me,” Jiang Yingshen explained simply. He walked to his own desk, pulled a light brown wallet from the drawer, and handed it over. “Check if anything is missing.”
The wallet only contained cards, so Qi Xu felt there was no need to count, but he still pretended to check while secretly stealing a glance at the man.
The man wasn’t wearing glasses today. He wore a light blue loose denim jacket, casual pants, and white sneakers. His hair was styled slightly away from his forehead, revealing a clean brow.
The outfit was casual and fit the aesthetic of modern young people.
The desk he was currently leaning against was the one Qi Xu had ignored earlier; the items on it were organized and precise, just like the man himself.
Qi Xu couldn’t understand—why didn’t this person stop him when they bumped into each other?
Then, he sighed in his heart.
I really should follow stereotypes when looking for people. He should have realized something was wrong the moment he saw that “scruffy” hair.
The “scruffy” one himself, Chen Shaoyu, caught on to the situation. He pointed at the exquisite cake on his desk and joked, “Little guy, is it too late for me to change my last name to Jiang?”
Only then did Qi Xu remember the gift he brought. Before he could speak, the actual Senior Jiang spoke first: “There’s no need to give me things.”
Expressionless. Truly cold.
Qi Xu was good-looking, loved to smile, and had a sweet tongue, so he had never encountered such a cold shoulder before. But since he was the one who got the person wrong, he was in the wrong: “Sorry, Senior, I wasn’t paying attention just now.”
Jiang Yingshen didn’t speak. He turned and sat back in his seat.
Just as Qi Xu thought he was being ignored, the man spoke up faintly: “I suppose it’s my fault for not having a recognizable face.”
“…” He’s actually a bit venomous.
Qi Xu stared at the man’s profile, wanting to say that unless a person’s face was literally crooked, it was very hard for anyone to be “recognizable” to him.
Thinking of this, Qi Xu pursed his lips and couldn’t help but scrutinize the man’s face.
Although his brain couldn’t generate a specific mental image, he could see individual features clearly and distinguish general beauty.
The man in front of him had deep-set eyes, slightly upturned outer corners, and dense, straight lashes. His nose was high and straight, the line from bridge to tip was sharp, and his lips were thin but well-defined.
The features were all superior individually; he certainly wasn’t ugly.
However, Qi Xu had no interest in “pressing his warm face against a cold butt”: “Alright, thank you for bringing my wallet back, Senior. I won’t disturb you further.”
He probably wouldn’t see him again anyway. After the verbal thanks, Qi Xu left decisively.
Since the thank-you gift wasn’t accepted, he simply took it back with him.
After all, he had waited in line to buy it.
However, just as he stepped into the elevator, the standby system popped up.
Host just had contact with a Male Lead.
Qi Xu’s hand on the elevator button paused: “?”
System has detected energy from the Male Lead of Small World KLW552, Jiang Yingshen.
Qi Xu: “…”
Jiang Yingshen… Jiang…
Oh boy.
He pulled up the system window. The numbers in Jiang Yingshen’s column had indeed changed.
The change wasn’t smooth, however. Like a screen with a bad connection, the number flickered between 1 and 2 for a long time before finally stabilizing at 1.
Currently, the coexistence of three systems caused delays. Whether it was the system’s reaction or the “simping value” judgment, the former made it hard for the systems to help Qi Xu lock onto targets, but the latter gave him room to fix his mistakes.
Qi Xu looked down at the small dessert in his hand and blinked.
Perhaps he could have earned another point.
Staring at the countdown in the upper right corner—exactly two months and constantly decreasing—he immediately turned around and went back.
