- Chapter 2 - A Direct Approach: "Gege, want to start an Online Relationship? I’m Super Sweet!
His sister’s business was a priority, so Guo Jia stayed in Ji Yan’s room until five in the afternoon.
“Man, is your big brother reliable? How come we haven’t heard back yet?” He was anxious.
Ji Yan had checked his messages no less than three or four times. “He’s a computer science major; he knows every piece of software inside out. He’s probably being meticulous with the editing. Quality work takes time.”
“That makes sense. Since it’s his own brother’s important business, the big brother will definitely take it seriously.”
“Xiao Jia,” Song Jueshu knocked on the door and called out from outside. “Stay for dinner later. I have already made a portion for you. Do you hear me?”
“Got it! Thank you, Auntie!” Guo Jia replied, craning his neck.
“Then you two should come out soon; dinner is almost ready.”
“We know, Mom,” Ji Yan said.
Zhuo Yu’ang walked to his desk shirtless, pulled out his chair, and sat down. He transferred the photo from his phone to his laptop, opened the software, and began working on it.
“A female, right?” He confirmed with Ji Han once more.
“Right, make it a beauty,” Ji Han replied without looking back, his headphones hanging around his neck.
Zhuo Yu’ang felt the situation was absurd again. Editing a photo to turn a boy into a girl was a first for him. He had no usable assets on hand, so he even had to buy and download materials. He asked, “Old Ji, does your brother want long hair or short hair?”
“Long hair, probably.”
“Does he want hairclips?”
“Add them for him.”
“What shades of lipstick are there? Which color should I use?”
This stumped Ji Han too; a man like him did not understand these things. “Just give him whatever.”
Zhuo Yu’ang gazed at the boy’s lips. The lips were slightly thin and the color was just right, being neither too dark nor too vivid, nor too pale or dull. Changing the lip color would actually be redundant.
After looking for a while, he unconsciously opened a drawer, skillfully pulled out a cigarette, and held it tilted between his lips. This was a far cry from his gentle and refined “Campus Heartthrob” image. Only Ji Han and their two other roommates, who had already gone home, knew about his smoking habit.
After holding it for a bit, he gripped it with two fingers and tossed the cigarette back into the drawer. “Your brother’s lip color is very nice; I will not change it.”
Ji Han was not even listening.
“Ji Han,” Zhuo Yu’ang said as he slowly polished the fit between the wig asset and the boy’s cheeks, asking casually, “Why does your brother want to change the photo?”
“I do not know. I will ask him later. Maybe it is just for fun.”
“He has a rather unique hobby.”
The boy had a good foundation with no flaws to be found. By switching to long hair and lengthening the eyelashes slightly, basically no other modifications were needed. Zhuo Yu’ang also deliberately kept the faint, small mole on his left cheek. Leaving it there added more character, as if it added a touch of unconscious, soul-stirring charm to the aloof expression.
“Alright, I have sent the photo to you,” Zhuo Yu’ang said as he closed his laptop.
Ji Han looked at the photo, gave a big thumbs up, and then sent it to his younger brother: “Your brother finished the edit for you. No need to thank me.”
By the time Ji Yan received the photo, Guo Jia had already finished his meal and was rushing home to check on his sister.
Estimating the time Guo Jia would arrive home, Ji Yan called him. “The photo is done. Send me that person’s WeChat ID.”
“My sister absolutely refused to let me see the WeChat ID,” Guo Jia said. He had just entered his house and was changing into slippers, not wasting a single second. “But do not worry, brother, I definitely will not screw you over. I managed to get the ID myself and confirmed it is correct. It is the famous guy from Nanhuai University, Zhuo Yu’ang’s ID.”
“That will do.”
“By the way, isn’t your big brother at Nanhuai University? If you are worried, ask him about it.”
“There is no need. If I talk to him too much, he will nag me to death.”
“All right, I have sent it over.”
“Wait for news then.”
Ji Yan sat down at his desk and pulled out his chair. First, he opened his WeChat profile. His avatar was a white West Highland Terrier puppy, and his name was simple, being the pinyin initials of his real name, JY. There was no need to change these; he only changed the gender to female.
Then he copied the WeChat ID Guo Jia had sent, searched for it, and added it. While filling out the friend request, he looked down and thought for a moment.
Avenging a scumbag could not get stuck at the first step.
He wrote: “I am your supervisor. Please pass the request.”
It was a bit of a bold lie, but its strength lay in being simple, direct, and efficient.
He placed the phone on the desk.
Ji Yan slowly folded his arms and leaned back. The air conditioner in the room blew a breeze that made his hair flutter slightly, but his dark eyes were fixed unblinkingly on the phone.
He sat and waited for news.
Nanhuai University had seven large dining halls in total, but only three were open during the holidays. During meal times, the flow of people was quite concentrated and somewhat lively.
After eating dinner at the dining hall, Zhuo Yu’ang and Ji Han headed to the laboratory.
Several junior and senior students also arrived one after another. After greeting each other, they busied themselves with their work, occasionally teasing one another.
Part of Ji Han’s mind was still immersed in the game Delta Force, boasting that he only got stronger when facing strong opponents. He fiddled with his work for a long time before truly focusing, but the crawler program on his screen suddenly stopped, and an error message popped up on the interface.
It was a small problem he could solve, but he intentionally sought help from a senior. “Senior, Senior?”
“Wait, where is the Senior?” He slid his chair around, looking left and right.
Zhuo Yu’ang scanned the screen for two seconds and tapped a line of code with his fingertip. “The anti-crawl mechanism was triggered. Add a delay and then change the request header.”
Ji Han gritted his teeth softly. “I did not need you to tell me that; of course I knew it.”
Zhuo Yu’ang curled his lips slightly and teased him, “You are also one of Professor Li’s star students. If he knew that your motivation for staying on campus to work was that ‘the drunkard’s interest is not in the wine,’ what would the professor think?”
“Fine, fine,” Ji Han said as he rubbed his nose. “I will work properly, alright?”
As they were speaking, Senior Ge Jiarui returned, carrying five cups of coffee. “Come, everyone stop for a moment. Someone is treating us to coffee today!”
“I was wondering where the Senior went. It turns out she was afraid I would be working too hard and went to buy me coffee.” Ji Han stood up abruptly and reached out to take them.
Ge Jiarui bypassed him and gave the first cup to Zhuo Yu’ang. “Yu’ang, this is yours. It is an Iced Americano. It is mainly for you; everyone else is just benefiting from your luck.”
Ji Han grew anxious and looked deeply aggrieved. “Senior, you, him, you guys, you would not… what?”
The profoundness of the Chinese language lies in the ability to fully express an intended meaning using just a few simple words.
Ge Jiarui glanced at him and said, “Where is your mind going? I did not buy it; I just helped pick it up.”
“That scared me to death,” Ji Han said as he breathed a sigh of relief. He eagerly helped distribute the remaining four cups, leaving the last one for himself.
The others all started laughing; Ji Han’s intentions were hidden far too shallowly.
But the main topic remained focused on Zhuo Yu’ang.
“He is talented and good-looking, with girls chasing him by the dozen. He is the undisputed ‘Campus Heartthrob’ of our Nanhuai University. Personally, I am absolutely convinced,” Zhang Shuo teased.
“Thank you for the recognition, Senior. To show my gratitude, my coffee is yours.” Zhuo Yu’ang pushed the Americano toward him.
Zhang Shuo replied, “Am I drinking two cups? I will not have to sleep tonight.”
Ge Jiarui said, “Zhang Shuo, you have it wrong this time. The person who sent the coffee today is not a girl, but a freshman underclassman.”
“Pffft!” Ji Han was the first to spit his drink. Wiping the coffee stains off his chin with his finger, he coughed incessantly. “A guy?”
Everyone’s eyes sparkled with the light of gossip, and they started chatting all at once.
“A guy pursuing a guy is not actually that strange. What era is this?”
“That is true.”
“Which department is he from? Is he good-looking?”
“Yu’ang, you never accept girls. Do you like boys?”
“Do not worry, we are all very open-minded, haha!”
Compared to their gossiping curiosity, Zhuo Yu’ang remained as calm as ever. This was not the first time he had been pursued by a guy; joining the same club for him or “accidentally” running into him at the library a dozen times a week were common occurrences. There were many more instances, but he simply had not mentioned them.
He had no plans for a relationship, at least not during his university years.
“I am sorry to disappoint you all,” Zhuo Yu’ang said as he swiveled his chair half a turn. Even this simple action looked incredibly cool when he did it, but his personality was exceptionally ruthless. “I am not interested in boys either. I will not be in a relationship during university.”
This immediately poured cold water on everyone’s gossiping enthusiasm.
The crowd dispersed, shaking their heads as they went back to their work.
“Yu’ang, are you serious?” Ge Jiarui leaned in. “Are you really not going to give the junior a chance?”
“I really cannot,” he said, leaving no room for doubt.
“Fine then, I will just tell him directly that there is no hope.”
“Thank you, Senior.”
Just then, a call came into his phone. Zhuo Yu’ang went outside the lab to answer it.
A certain company was extending an olive branch, proactively offering an internship opportunity during the holiday. After a brief chat, he politely declined. It was then that he saw the red notification dot on WeChat—a friend request from a stranger.
The note said: “I am your supervisor. Please pass the request.”
Which supervisor could it be?
Zhuo Yu’ang called his academic supervisor, but coincidentally, there was no answer on the other end, so he accepted the friend request.
On the other side, Ji Yan had been staring at his phone. As soon as the request was accepted, he sent the edited photo.
Facing a scumbag who liked “keeping a fish pond,” he did not waste any unnecessary words. He went straight to the point, acting sweet while maintaining a cold expression: “Gege, do you want to start an online relationship? This is me in the photo. I am super sweet!”
Receiving the message, Zhuo Yu’ang was stunned.
His fingers paused. The sentence “May I ask which supervisor you are?” in the input box was only half-edited.
The “girl” in the photo was indeed very beautiful, with smooth contours and exquisite features. Her long black hair fell softly on her shoulders. If described as candy, she indeed should be sweet.
But this photo was familiar.
Two hours ago, he had personally, bit by bit, adjusted the colors, touched up the details, and processed the background to turn a boy into a girl.
And now, the person who asked him for the edit was using the photo he edited to fool him?
His tall figure stood in place, with his head slightly lowered and his eyes narrowed. The rebellious and wild nature suppressed in his bones finally could not be hidden and surfaced slightly. He poked his cheek with the tip of his tongue, unable to suppress a smile.
No, he did not know whether to laugh or cry.
Ji Han’s younger brother is pretending to be a girl to fool his own brother’s roommate, is he?
