- Chapter 8 - The "Loyal Dog" and the "Black-Bellied" Lady
Dr. Pei gave a faint “mm” in response and pushed Yu Zhouyao into the ward.
The girl from the teaching building immediately circled around Yu Zhouyao’s bed, beaming as she introduced herself. “Hello, Yu Zhouyao! I have been waiting for you for so long. My name is Mu Mingyue. Thank you for saving me yesterday; I feel much better now. I am so sorry for causing you trouble and making you end up in the hospital.”
Dr. Pei interrupted her. “Her being in the hospital has nothing to do with you. She isn’t sick. Mingyue, sit on your own bed first while I secure hers.”
When facing her cousin, Dr. Pei actually sounds gentle, Yu Zhouyao noted silently.
Mu Mingyue grabbed Dr. Pei’s hand and gave it two playful tugs. “Cousin… Cousin…”
Dr. Pei let her get away with it without a word. Seeing this, Yu Zhouyao felt even more like she had been mistreated by the doctor earlier.
“There.” Dr. Pei finished securing the bed and turned to Yu Zhouyao. “Since you two already know each other, try to get along. And Yu Zhouyao, I am warning you: if you jump out of another damn window, I will tie you down and perform a live dissection.”
She then gave her cousin a subtle smile. “Mingyue, if you feel unwell at all, let me know. Get some good rest these next few days.”
Mu Mingyue replied sweetly, “I know, Cousin! I will follow the doctor’s orders!”
As soon as Dr. Pei left the room, Mu Mingyue hopped off her bed and skipped over to Yu Zhouyao. She grabbed Yu Zhouyao’s hands, looking delighted. “Benefactor, I finally get to see you properly!”
Yu Zhouyao was stunned. From the moment Dr. Pei knocked on the door, she felt like she had lost the thread of the situation. “I heard you mention… Dr. Pei is your cousin?”
Mu Mingyue squeezed her hands and nodded. “Mmhmm! Pei Xian and I grew up together. She is incredible—graduated from medical school with top honors, broke through social prejudices, and became the first Omega chief physician on Planet Aurora.”
She smiled sweetly, then added as if remembering something, “But Zhouyao, you are amazing too. Ah, sorry! I just called you by your name without asking. You don’t mind, do you?”
Mu Mingyue lightly covered her lips with her hand, her eyes looking watery and soft, like a vulnerable fawn.
So… so cute…
Yu Zhouyao marveled at how adorable the classmate she had accidentally saved turned out to be. She found herself completely unable to resist those pleading eyes.
Her gaze flickered away as she stammered, “It… it is fine.”
“That is great! Zhouyao, Zhouyao, Zhouyao!” Mu Mingyue let go of her hands and lunged forward, throwing her arms around Yu Zhouyao in a hug. Her long hair fell into the crook of Yu Zhouyao’s neck, tickling her skin with every movement.
Mu Mingyue was so overly familiar that Yu Zhouyao had no defense; she had been trapped in the other girl’s rhythm since entering the room. “Mu Mingyue… Student Mu, sorry, you are holding me too tight. I… I can’t really breathe.”
“Oh! Is that so? Sorry, sorry! My mistake. I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable.” Mu Mingyue apologized, though she only hopped back one step and sat naturally on the edge of Yu Zhouyao’s bed.
“It is okay.” Yu Zhouyao tugged at her collar, trying to calm herself down. It didn’t seem to work; despite her efforts, her face still felt hot.
I’m doomed, Yu Zhouyao thought.
Mu Mingyue watched her with great interest. For a fleeting second, Yu Zhouyao thought she caught a mischievous glint in the girl’s eyes—the kind of smirk someone wears when they discover a fun new toy.
Yu Zhouyao assumed she had imagined it. She blinked, and Mu Mingyue’s expression was back to being perfectly innocent, the curve of her smile unchanged.
“Say, Zhouyao, are you hot? You keep pulling at your collar. Do you want me to open the window for you?”
Yu Zhouyao felt a strange surge of nervousness. “No need. Thank you, Student Mu.”
“Mmhmm.” Mu Mingyue’s eyes sparkled. “Zhouyao, why are you still being so formal with me? Just call me by my name.” She paused. “If you like, you can call me Mingyue…”
Yu Zhouyao was swept along by the request, her tongue nearly tying itself in knots. “Uh, okay… Mu Mingyue.”
Mu Mingyue’s smile grew even brighter. “Yay! My benefactor and I are on a first name basis! I am so happy. You are so kind, Zhouyao.”
“Hahaha… Mu Mingyue, you are quite the joker. You are kind too.”
Mu Mingyue chuckled. She dimmed her smile slightly to offer a more serious thank you. “Even though I said it once, I want to thank you formally. Thank you, Yu Zhouyao, for helping me through my heat at school.”
Yu Zhouyao felt a bit embarrassed. “It was nothing. No big deal.”
The moment the words left her mouth, she realized she had messed up. A heat cycle was not a “no big deal” situation! She had walked in on someone’s most private moment and then spoke about it so carelessly; it was highly offensive.
She tried to fix her stupid mistake. “Ah… sorry. A heat cycle is not a small thing. I am sorry for intruding on your private business.”
Mu Mingyue shook her head. “It is fine. I take full responsibility for failing to control my pheromones in a public place. You helped me, and I truly want to thank you.”
“Is your body feeling better?” Yu Zhouyao asked.
“Yes,” Mu Mingyue said crisply. “The suppressor helped a lot. It was such a coincidence—how did you happen to have the exact suppressor my cousin prescribed for me?”
Yu Zhouyao’s lip twitched. My dear lady, I was Dr. Pei’s lab rat.
“I was a patient in this hospital earlier, and Dr. Pei was my doctor. I snatched a suppressor when I left.” Yu Zhouyao gave a weak laugh. “Maybe it was just a coincidence, and it came in handy shortly after. I am just glad it helped you.”
Mu Mingyue bit her lip and gave a soft “mm.” She turned her back to Yu Zhouyao, looking away as she whispered, “Actually, it wasn’t just the suppressor. Your pheromones helped a lot too.”
Yu Zhouyao’s heart skipped a beat. She thought she had misheard. “What? Sorry, Mu Mingyue, what did you just say?”
Mu Mingyue sighed, turned around to look Yu Zhouyao in the eye, and said seriously, “Yu Zhouyao, I said your pheromones smell very good.”
Yu Zhouyao’s face turned bright red instantly.
Does she… does she know what she is saying? Commenting on someone’s pheromones like that was incredibly suggestive. It was practically the same as confessing that your biological instincts want that person.
Yu Zhouyao’s body instinctively leaned back a fraction.
Mu Mingyue also seemed to realize she had said something scandalous. she hurriedly covered her face with her hands, not daring to look at Yu Zhouyao. “I am so sorry! I said something so offensive without thinking! Waaaaah…”
Yu Zhouyao suddenly felt like the guilty one, even though she was the one who had been “offended.” She reached out and patted Mu Mingyue’s shoulder. “It is okay. I… I’m fine. I know my pheromones are a bit unique. I forgive you, just be careful next time. Don’t go breaking other people’s taboos.”
At those words, Mu Mingyue seemed to undergo a total revival. She looked back at Yu Zhouyao with those sparkling eyes. “Mmhmm! Okay, Zhouyao! I knew you were the best. I will be careful from now on.”
Yu Zhouyao pressed her lips together, helpless.
Mu Mingyue leaned back against the wall. “Sorry, Zhouyao, did I really offend you just now?”
“It was fine.” Yu Zhouyao thought for a moment before adding, “Your pheromones are very special too. They have a unique… wild, fierce quality.”
Mu Mingyue burst out laughing as if she had been told a joke. “Oh, Zhouyao, you have such a way with words. You put it so politely. Since you have smelled it, just be honest. My pheromones smell like blood; it is terrifying, isn’t it? Cousin always says I smell like I was born from a mountain of corpses and a sea of blood.”
Mu Mingyue leaned down, tilting her head toward Yu Zhouyao and blinking. “What about you? Were you scared of me at the time?”
Yu Zhouyao lowered her gaze. “Not really. But you… you were quite fierce then. You kept grabbing me and wouldn’t let me go.”
Mu Mingyue acted shocked. “Wait, really? I don’t remember that at all. Sorry, sorry!”
“It is fine.”
Mu Mingyue rested her head lightly on Yu Zhouyao’s shoulder. “Zhouyao, your pheromones are so gentle. Even if I don’t remember much… that is the feeling you give me.”
She was leaning too close. The atmosphere was becoming far too intimate. Strange topic, strange distance, strange setting—everything felt off. Yu Zhouyao swallowed hard, unable to find words.
For a moment, she thought she smelled blood again. She held her breath, and in the next second, the scent vanished.
Yu Zhouyao stayed still, glancing at Mu Mingyue with confusion. “Um, are you…?”
Mu Mingyue looked as if she had just been jolted awake from a nap. She said vaguely, “What is it, Zhouyao?”
“Nothing.” Yu Zhouyao suppressed her doubt and kept her mouth shut.
Mu Mingyue sat up and skipped around, looking full of energy again. She picked up two bags of nutrient solution from her bedside table and handed one to Yu Zhouyao. “Zhouyao, let’s eat together. This flavor is really good.”
Yu Zhouyao took it and looked at the label. It said: “Orange Soda Flavor Nutrient Solution.”
This is way too suggestive.
Yu Zhouyao began to suspect that Mu Mingyue hadn’t lost her memory at all.
