- Chapter 3 - Three Hours and Fourteen Minutes Until Enrollment Ends
Interstellar Flight Transportation Base, Planet Aurora.
Some people’s lives are full of ups and downs; Yu Zhouyao’s life was more like a small hop followed by a long, relentless tumble to the bottom of the valley.
Because she was too poor to afford a direct ticket, she bought a sixtieth-hand spacecraft for her enrollment journey, spending the entire trip patching it up. Just as she was about to arrive, the ship exploded and she was captured. Heaven above, Yu Zhouyao thought, did I slay a god in my past life? Why is my fate so bitter?
She was genuinely terrified by the excited gazes of the group of people in white coats, and she gave an almost imperceptible shiver.
She managed a weak, “…hallo?”
The light in the bald man’s eyes grew even brighter. The surrounding researchers stared at her without blinking.
Yu Zhouyao sensed something was wrong. She secretly released a bit of mental strength, ready to bolt at any moment.
“Um… why is no one saying anything? It is actually a bit scary when you are all silent.”
As she spoke, she pushed the pod door open further to climb out. She crept out of the escape pod, but as soon as one foot touched the ground, someone called out: “Hello.”
The sudden greeting startled her so much that she lost her balance. With a loud thud, she fell flat on her face, making zero-distance contact with the metal floor.
Yu Zhouyao felt too ashamed to show her face and closed her eyes in agony.
[Two Hours and Forty-Five Minutes Until Enrollment Ends]
First Interstellar Hospital, Planet Aurora.
Half an hour ago, Yu Zhouyao had tripped the moment she exited the pod. The bald Director Zhou had kindly helped her up. After brief introductions, Director Zhou ordered the researchers to take her to the hospital for a checkup. The transportation base would first study the debris. Once her physical condition improved, they would question her about the aircraft.
“Little Yu, go to the hospital for a checkup first and get some good rest,” Director Zhou instructed warmly. To Yu Zhouyao’s ears, his kind tone sounded like a death warrant.
This is bad, she thought. It is going to be hard to escape now.
She immediately pleaded in a low voice, “Boss Zhou… wait, Mr. Zhou, Director Zhou… I have other things to take care of.”
Zhou Tongwei raised an eyebrow and continued to reassure her. “Little Yu, a plane crash has a massive impact on the human body. What could be more important than your health? Just stay in the hospital for two days and rest easy.”
Two days? I cannot even wait two hours, Yu Zhouyao thought grimly.
She put on a more pitiful expression and continued to beg. “Director Zhou, I have to go to school. I have to enroll.”
Zhou Tongwei looked surprised again. “Enroll?”
He turned to the surrounding researchers. “Has the enrollment for Dawn Military Academy not ended yet?”
The researchers nodded in agreement. However, one person spoke up hesitantly. “Director Zhou… technically it is not over. The enrollment period is the first week of school, and today is the last day. But usually, all students have arrived by the first day. I have never seen a situation like this student’s before.”
Yu Zhouyao nodded eagerly. “Leaders, researchers, I went through untold hardships and nearly died in a crash just to get here to enroll. Please, be kind and let me enroll first. I promise I will come back and let you study me all you want. Deal?”
Zhou Tongwei paused. He had never seen such a strange kid. Using the excuse of wanting to go to school just to run away?
“Do not worry, Student Yu. I will contact Dawn Military Academy right now and have them expedite your process. You can enroll after you have recovered.”
“Director! Sir! If I do not enroll today, I will lose my spot! You cannot do this to me!”
“It will be fine, trust me.”
Yu Zhouyao wanted to keep wailing, but Zhou Tongwei had people lead her away. She was taken directly to the First Hospital next to the base and stuffed into the emergency room. Her body was covered in magnetic sensor patches. She had officially become the doctors’ lab rat.
She released her mental strength to explore the hospital environment, searching for an escape route.
The sound of conversation drifted into her mind. It seemed to be the researcher who brought her and an emergency doctor talking outside.
“Dr. Pei, how is the person inside?”
“All data is normal.”
“Everything is normal?”
“Yes.”
“That is strange. It is actually weirder that the data is normal.”
The sound of paper flipping came from outside.
“After all, she is an S+ rank Alpha. It is logical that her powerful mental strength kept her unharmed during the crash.”
“Wait, S+?”
“Yes. S+ rank. Just measured. The emergency room equipment is a bit old, so it can only confirm it is higher than S rank. Whether it is SS or higher would require more precise instruments.”
Hearing this, Yu Zhouyao opened her eyes slightly.
Today was the first time she had ever had her mental strength tested. Hearing Dr. Pei say she was S+ rank made her quite happy. It would have been even better if the news came on a day when she was not busy trying to escape.
The people outside seemed to finish their conversation. A short-haired woman pushed the door open; this was evidently Dr. Pei. Yu Zhouyao turned to look at her.
“Awake?”
“Yes, Doctor. How is my body?”
Dr. Pei paused, her tone remaining neutral. “S+ mental strength. A minor crash like that would not cause you any problems.”
Yu Zhouyao did not know how to respond. “…So, you mean my health is pretty good? That is great then.”
The doctor gave her a deep, silent look, then lowered her head to enter the data into her device.
After eighty-nine seconds, Dr. Pei continued, “You can leave the emergency room. Rest in a regular ward for two days. The transportation base will send someone to pick you up.”
With that, she called someone to move Yu Zhouyao out.
Yu Zhouyao was delighted, feeling grateful to this man-of-few-words Dr. Pei. She was one step closer to escaping the clutches of the research institute. She projected her mental strength, scanning the hospital’s structure to calculate the shortest escape route.
An Omega nurse wheeled her into a room. She glanced at the number: 313. Third floor, she thought. Easy to escape from.
“Yu Zhouyao, right?”
She nodded.
“Rest here for now. The doctor will come for a follow-up check tonight.”
“Okay.”
The nurse opened the window for ventilation before leaving. Perfect, Yu Zhouyao thought. Heaven is on my side.
As soon as the door closed, Yu Zhouyao pulled her device from her pocket and locked in the destination: Dawn Military Academy.
She jumped off the bed and stood by the window to observe the terrain. Her scan confirmed they were on the third floor, but it was five meters higher than a standard third floor.
She sighed.
Just as her hand touched the windowsill, the door was burst open by the little nurse. Yu Zhouyao turned around stiffly.
“Sorry! I forgot to bring your nutrient solution and suppressors. Oh, why are you standing by the window? Dr. Pei said you haven’t rested properly for days. She wants you to take these before sleeping. Are you letting in some air? That is good, the breeze might help you feel more refreshed.”
Yu Zhouyao remained silent. She walked to the cart, picked up a bag of liquid, and put it in her pocket.
“I am fine, Nurse. I just wanted some fresh air. I will take the medicine in a bit,” Yu Zhouyao said with a smile.
The Omega nurse seemed convinced. “Alright then, relax for a while. The IV next door is finished; I will be back after I change it.”
“Okay,” Yu Zhouyao smiled even more innocently.
The moment the door closed, Yu Zhouyao checked her pockets to make sure she had everything. Everything was in order. She gripped the windowsill and leaped out.
The wind was loud, but she thought she heard the nurse shriek. “Oh no! Dr. Pei, the patient jumped out the window!”
Yu Zhouyao’s smile grew even brighter in the wind.
[Two Hours and Forty-Three Minutes Until Enrollment Ends]
Ten kilometers from Dawn Military Academy.
Yu Zhouyao ran through the wind with intense focus.
She was not reckless; her jump was a calculated move. Back on her home planet, she and Eric used to play “high-altitude tossing” in abandoned buildings. She was quite experienced when it came to jumping off things.
According to her scan, the hospital was built much higher than usual, but there was a platform at the corner between the floors. She had specifically chosen a slanted angle for her jump to aim for that platform as a buffer.
Yu Zhouyao stopped holding back. She wrapped her entire body in her mental strength as an extra layer of protection. The wind roared in her ears, making them ache.
She approached the target, tapped the platform with her toes to use it as a springboard, performed a backflip to adjust her direction, and headed for the next target. After repeating this twice, Yu Zhouyao landed smoothly on the ground.
The moment she touched the ground, her mental strength picked up a commotion fifty meters away.
“Oh no, Yu Zhouyao escaped!”
It sounded like the researcher who had brought her.
Yu Zhouyao’s lip twitched. She cursed internally and accelerated, sprinting away from the hospital.
[Two Hours and Thirty-Nine Minutes Until Enrollment Ends]
Five kilometers from Dawn Military Academy.
Yu Zhouyao was going all out, pushing her speed to the limit. Running so fast made her feel dizzy.
Dr. Pei’s advice had been correct. After flying that junk ship for nearly two days without sleep, her body was reaching its breaking point. Regardless, she had to last until she finished enrolling. Even if she collapsed, it had to be inside the Academic Affairs office.
Yu Zhouyao glanced back. Several small aircraft had risen from the hospital and were chasing her.
Crap, you have got to be kidding me. How could two legs outrun hydrogen power? Yu Zhouyao bit her lip hard.
With the “wolves” closing in from behind, she accelerated again.
Her device’s voice suddenly rang out: “One thousand meters to Dawn Military Academy. Please continue straight.”
The robotic voice gave Yu Zhouyao a surge of motivation. Victory was right ahead.
The taste of blood rose in her mouth. Yu Zhouyao clamped her lips shut, forcing it back down.
Within her line of sight, she could finally see the school gates with the four golden characters: “Dawn Military Academy.” A large crowd was gathered at the gate, making a lot of noise.
The sound of the pursuing aircraft surged again.
Yu Zhouyao hardened her resolve. For the final fifty meters, she relied on pure momentum, performing a sliding dash right through the school gates. She kept her center of gravity low to the ground, wrapped herself in mental strength, and zipped through the gaps in the crowd. She finally came to a stop in the center of the throng.
Bye-bye, losers.
