- Chapter 13 - Pheromones and Territorial Instincts
Mu Mingyue arrived at the training ground in high spirits. She greeted everyone with a rare, genuine smile.
Last night, she had finally managed a peaceful conversation with Yu Zhouyao, who had even politely wished her a good night and sweet dreams. Mu Mingyue felt that Yu Zhouyao was finally stopping the avoidance act, and their relationship was finally growing a little closer. She was even able to handle the mindless chatter of morning socializing with a calm heart.
Mu Mingyue looked forward to deepening her connection with Yu Zhouyao in the days to come.
That good mood lasted exactly forty minutes.
The moment she laid eyes on Yu Zhouyao, a spark of irritation flared up. Her mental strength was sharp enough to detect that Yu Zhouyao was wearing someone else’s clothes—and they carried a strong scent of another person.
Mu Mingyue could not quite define the feeling, but she simply found the sight intolerable. Controlling her expression within the bounds of lady-like etiquette, she shot a glare at Yu Zhouyao.
Yu Zhouyao scratched her head, looking utterly confused. She had no idea why the young miss was glaring at her first thing in the morning; she racked her brain but could not figure out how she had offended her this time.
Yu Zhouyao whispered to Lu Yuan, “Lu Yuan, have you noticed? Mu Mingyue looks a bit upset today.”
Lu Yuan looked blank. “Huh? Really? Miss Mu looks as elegant as ever to me.”
Hearing that, Yu Zhouyao gave up on finding answers from others. Her intuition told her that Mu Mingyue was not happy—in fact, she was a little bit angry. Yu Zhouyao performed a mental “control variable” analysis. If there was any difference between herself today and herself yesterday, it was the clothes. Today, she was wearing her roommate’s clothes.
Yu Zhouyao thought: No way, is Mu Mingyue’s nose that sharp? Oh, right, her mental strength is high. It seemed even her choice of clothing was being monitored by the young miss. Yu Zhouyao gave a silent, bitter smile.
Instructor Liu arrived on time, kicking off another day of devilish training. Yu Zhouyao had no time left for reading moods and threw herself entirely into the drills.
Today, Instructor Liu showed no mercy either. Following yesterday’s leg muscle torture, the grumpy instructor introduced a “combat sparring” mode. After demonstrating a few grappling and throwing techniques, he told the students to pair up.
Yu Zhouyao was about to find Lu Yuan when the instructor called out to her. “Hey, you. Yes, you. Yu Zhouyao, right? Come here.” He called Mu Mingyue over as well.
The two stood face to face.
“Yes, you two,” Instructor Liu announced. “The two with the best physical endurance. Sending you to train with the others is a waste. You two will spar together.”
Yu Zhouyao blinked and stole a cautious glance at the young miss. Mu Mingyue’s face showed no sign of her earlier annoyance. She replied obediently, “Understood, Instructor.”
Yu Zhouyao felt apprehensive, like she was suspended in mid air, forced to feel a constant state of weightlessness. She had no idea how a “slightly angry” Mu Mingyue would play with her.
Yu Zhouyao tried to ask softly, “Um… Mu Mingyue, are you feeling a bit down today?”
Mu Mingyue countered with a blank expression, “Am I? Zhouyao, you must be mistaken.”
Yu Zhouyao gave a weak laugh. In her opinion, a non-smiling Mu Mingyue was much scarier.
“Yu Zhouyao, are you ready? If so, shall we begin?”
Yu Zhouyao nodded.
Miss Mu’s movements, both with her hands and feet, were lightning fast. In an instant, she launched a sequence of moves, using momentum and raw strength to slam Yu Zhouyao onto the ground. Yu Zhouyao scrambled to assume a defensive posture to buffer the impact and reduce the pressure.
She hit the ground hard.
Well, Miss Mu was certainly not “holding back” at all. As if afraid Yu Zhouyao was living too comfortably, her power and speed were top notch. Yu Zhouyao scrambled up, got into position, and was promptly thrown by Mu Mingyue again.
After repeating this thirty or forty times, Yu Zhouyao finally could not take it anymore. “Miss Mu, Lady Mingyue, those hits are starting to really hurt. How did I offend you today?”
Mu Mingyue looked down at her and said slowly, “You didn’t. Zhouyao, you misunderstood. Didn’t Instructor Liu tell us to train seriously?” She placed heavy emphasis on those last three words.
Yu Zhouyao raised her hands in surrender. “Alright, alright, Miss Mu. Let us continue, then.”
Mu Mingyue showed no mercy, continuing to vent her frustration through the drills. The plastic track was uneven; hitting it directly would turn one’s back red. Having been thrown so many times, Yu Zhouyao learned her lesson and used her mental strength to wrap around her body as an extra buffer before hitting the ground.
After a hundred throws, the young miss finally decided to switch roles. Yu Zhouyao climbed up and shook her limbs to relax. Once they were both in position, Yu Zhouyao moved quickly, using an over-the-shoulder throw to send Mu Mingyue to the ground.
Mu Mingyue stood up expressionless. “Zhouyao, why was that throw so light? I didn’t even feel any pain.”
Well, that’s because I’m afraid of hurting you and annoying you further! Yu Zhouyao thought. Too light was no good, but too heavy was no good either. Relationships were so complicated.
Yu Zhouyao could only say, “Should I add more strength then?”
Mu Mingyue nodded.
Yu Zhouyao attacked again, increasing her power. Mu Mingyue cooperated fully, buffering her own fall perfectly. From a distance where they couldn’t see, Instructor Liu wore a satisfied smile, clearly pleased with their performance.
After many repetitions and several variations of throwing techniques, Instructor Liu finally called a halt. Yu Zhouyao grabbed a bottle of water and handed it to Mu Mingyue. The young miss said nothing but took the water and drank.
Yu Zhouyao muttered to herself: Is the peace treaty finally back on?
Before she could speak to Mu Mingyue, they were called away by the instructor again. “Mu Mingyue, Yu Zhouyao, over here.” He had them stand in the center of the crowd. “Demonstrate the moves you just did for everyone.”
The two exchanged a glance and instantly settled on their roles. Mu Mingyue struck with clinical precision, pinning Yu Zhouyao to the ground. Yu Zhouyao used her mental strength to cushion the fall. After three demonstrations, they bowed. The classmates applauded enthusiastically.
“Wow, that was so cool.” “The moves the pros do are totally different from ours.” “How am I so bad at this?” “Their movements are so fluid.”
Instructor Liu said with satisfaction, “Do you see? Although throwing moves look simple, there are many key points. You must learn to borrow momentum and find the right power points. When Mu Mingyue moved, she had a very fluid waist twist. That is borrowing momentum, understand?”
He continued, “And for the one being thrown—it doesn’t mean you just stand there like an idiot waiting to hit the dirt. In those one or two seconds of weightlessness, you must quickly adjust your landing posture to increase the buffer. I told you this at the beginning, yet some of you still don’t listen. So I had your classmates demonstrate so you can see the gap between yourselves and the experts.”
Instructor Liu dispersed the crowd to continue practicing. He walked over to the two of them and asked, “Yu Zhouyao, did you use mental strength just now?”
Yu Zhouyao nodded. “Yes, Instructor. I used it as a buffer for the landing. Is something wrong?”
“Nothing, it was good. I hadn’t even mentioned it yet, and you already figured it out. Not bad.”
Yu Zhouyao chuckled. This was purely a result of experience. When she jumped out of the hospital window, she was terrified of dying, so she wrapped herself in mental strength. The effect was great; she remained perfectly healthy.
Mu Mingyue then asked, “Instructor Liu, are there specific things to keep in mind when wrapping mental strength around movements?”
“Good question,” the instructor replied. “Attaching mental strength to movements is actually second year material. Since you two have already explored this step, I will teach you now. There are three things to note. First, you must be able to control your mental strength so it only stays around your body. Second, it should follow your movements like a layer of clothing. Third, any movement can be wrapped, but the state of the mental strength varies with the move; you must explore that yourselves.”
He turned to Yu Zhouyao. “What you did with the landing was excellent. Landings only require an extra buffer. Wrapping the parts of the back that make contact makes it feel like a spring mattress.”
“You two can try it now. If you have more questions, ask me.”
Yu Zhouyao thanked him. Mu Mingyue stood there deep in thought. Seeing this, Yu Zhouyao waved a hand in front of her eyes. “What are you dazing off for, my lady?”
Mu Mingyue snapped out of it. “Thinking about what the instructor said.”
“And?”
“It sounds quite difficult.”
“Indeed,” Yu Zhouyao replied. “Don’t worry, I’ll practice with you.”
“But haven’t you already learned it?”
Yu Zhouyao shook her head. “I just fumbled my way through it.” Taking advantage of the fact that the young miss seemed to be in a better mood, she added, “You seem much better now, Miss Mu.”
“What do you mean?”
“Nothing. Just an observation. You were a bit scary with that cold face earlier.”
Hearing this, Mu Mingyue seemed to remember something and looked Yu Zhouyao over carefully. “It was nothing, Zhouyao. I just realized you weren’t very well off. When I saw you this morning, I was surprised to see you wearing someone else’s old clothes.”
Yu Zhouyao thought: As I expected. The things this young miss got upset about were truly strange. “You’re just making a fuss over nothing. I have no luggage and no change of clothes. I borrowed two sets from my roommate. Miss Mu, you can’t expect me to train in stinky clothes all week, can you?”
Mu Mingyue’s brow smoothed over. “So that was it?”
Yu Zhouyao nodded. “It will be fine once this week is over. The school will issue uniforms after training.”
Mu Mingyue thought for a moment, then looked at her tenderly. “You could have borrowed clothes from me, Zhouyao. After all, we are friends.”
Yu Zhouyao just smiled. This Miss Mu was certainly a very possessive kind of friend.
