- Chapter 11 - Roommates and Machine Love
Although the eldest daughter of the Mu family was a woman with a devious mind, Yu Zhouyao had to admit her appearance was quite deceptive.
She was sweet, adorable, poised, and beloved by all. As soon as military training ended, a large crowd swarmed her, making the area impassable. Yu Zhouyao had initially thought she should take Mu Mingyue’s words with a grain of salt, but seeing her surrounded like that, she realized the girl had been telling the truth about being constantly pestered by others.
Yu Zhouyao did not disturb her and quietly left the field. Lu Yuan followed her instead, catching her up on the essential knowledge of Dawn Military Academy.
“According to standard practice, the freshman enrollment period lasts one week. The first week is military training, followed by a placement exam to divide students of different levels into classes. During this training week, we use the app to select our courses. The results will come out after the exam.”
Yu Zhouyao answered honestly, “I have not picked any yet.”
“What? You still have not picked?” Lu Yuan pulled out her phone, opened the academic module, and showed her the entire freshman curriculum. “Our courses are divided into required and elective. The ones marked in red are required. You can search the forum for course reviews from previous students as a reference.”
Yu Zhouyao listened while sipping a bag of nutrient solution. “Thank you.”
“No problem, do not mention it,” Lu Yuan replied readily. “Why are we being so formal?”
Yu Zhouyao was a bit confused. They did not seem to be that close yet. Seeing her reaction, Lu Yuan asked seriously, “Yu Zhouyao, do you… still not know that we are roommates?”
Yu Zhouyao let out a surprised “ah” in her head. She opened the campus app and realized there was a red dot in the top right corner. It was a notification for dormitory assignment: she and Lu Yuan were indeed roommates.
She apologized immediately. “Sorry, sorry, Lu Yuan. It is my fault. I have been so busy recovering in the hospital that I did not check the notifications. Please forgive me.”
Lu Yuan huffed. “I saw you walking with me as soon as training ended, so I thought you were heading back to the dorm too.”
Yu Zhouyao raised her hands in a gesture of surrender.
Chatting along the way, they reached the dormitory entrance. The student dorms were divided into Alpha, Beta, and Omega zones. The Alpha and Omega zones were located on opposite sides of the campus to physically reduce the risk of pheromone entanglement. The Betas, unaffected by pheromones, were placed in the central passage area.
Yu Zhouyao and Lu Yuan were lucky; they had drawn a double room. Their building was on the outermost layer of the Alpha zone, making transportation very convenient. If they ran fast, they could reach the training ground in just ten minutes.
Lu Yuan opened the door, delighted. “This is great. We drew a double room with a five in ten thousand probability.”
Yu Zhouyao quickly scanned the interior and was very satisfied. She could not help but feel her luck was finally turning. An orphan like her was now living in a luxury dorm with two bedrooms, a living room, and a bathroom. If her family back on her home planet knew, they would be incredibly envious.
Once again, Yu Zhouyao offered a silent prayer of gratitude to her alma mater.
Lu Yuan was busy organizing her luggage in the living room. Since Yu Zhouyao had basically arrived as a refugee, she had no luggage at all. She decided to go to her room to rest. Lying on the soft, comfortable bed, she felt as if she were being gently stroked by the sun. Her whole body relaxed.
She opened the app and scanned the course catalog, searching for reviews on the forum just as Lu Yuan had taught her. She picked a dozen courses she was interested in and added them to her cart.
The required courses were non negotiable: “Individual Physical Training,” “Individual Combat Training,” “Team Combat Training,” “Mecha Theory,” and “Introduction to Military Command.” No one could escape those.
On the forum, electives like “Battlefield Botany” and “Battlefield Zoology” were very popular. Rumor had it you could eat and drink during class. Yu Zhouyao followed the trend and added those to her cart as well.
But what she was most interested in was “Mechanical Manufacturing Theory and Practice.” The name alone sounded powerful, awakening the “machine lover” gene deep in her blood. Manufacturing! Hand drawn blueprints, 3D printing, machine assembly, and automated repairs, it sounded so cool!
Putting aside those flashy reasons, Yu Zhouyao realistically guessed she could learn about spacecraft in this class. She never wanted to experience a crash again. Thinking of this, she opened her contact list and messaged Eric.
[God of Wealth]: Alive? [Banana Lover]: Not dead. [God of Wealth]: You still have not been discharged? [Banana Lover]: …Little lady, I am not like you. I cannot recover that quickly. [God of Wealth]: . [God of Wealth]: Did the hospital or the base mention anything about medical fees? [Banana Lover]: Not yet. Why?
Yu Zhouyao paused for two seconds, feeling a bit uneasy.
[God of Wealth]: . [God of Wealth]: I do not know. I just have a bad feeling. If you are mostly better, you should get discharged soon. [Banana Lover]: Did you not say the medical fees were free? [God of Wealth]: I cannot say for sure now. [Banana Lover]: What?? Damn it, Yu Zhouyao, I will kill you!
Yu Zhouyao pressed her hand to her forehead.
[God of Wealth]: …Cursing me won’t help. I can’t tear down the hospital. [Banana Lover]: What is wrong with you! You lied to me! [God of Wealth]: Drastic times call for drastic measures. [Banana Lover]: …. Get lost.
Yu Zhouyao logged off quickly. She browsed the forum for a bit longer, watching the “cyber tea party,” and then decided to take an early shower.
It was only when she stripped naked in the bathroom that she realized she had no change of clothes except for the set she had just taken off. This was the downside of having no luggage.
Yu Zhouyao used every brain cell she had to figure out how to conjure up a set of clothes. The good news was that there were clean towels and cleaning tools in the bathroom. She could wrap herself in a towel, go out, and use the self service laundry to wash her dirty clothes. The bad news was that the dryer seemed broken, so she could not finish washing and drying within an hour.
After some hesitation, she wrapped herself in a towel and went out. She saw that Lu Yuan and her luggage were no longer in the living room. Yu Zhouyao knocked on Lu Yuan’s bedroom door, but there was no answer; perhaps Lu Yuan had already fallen asleep.
With no luck borrowing anything from her roommate, Yu Zhouyao had to walk back to her room, grab a screwdriver, and head back to the bathroom to face her miserable life. Her life was always full of ups and downs; even when she was lucky, fate always found a way to cause trouble.
Yu Zhouyao lamented once again that knowing how to repair machines was absolutely necessary. This was the second time in five days she had suffered because of it.
Wrapped only in a towel, she crouched down to inspect the washing machine. She turned screws for quite a while, cursing and cajoling the machine, until finally, it started running.
The only flaw was that the drying power was not strong enough; the clothes came out damp. Yu Zhouyao was not picky. She pulled the wet clothes on, comforting herself that they were only slightly damp and her body heat would dry them in a while. She closed her window, wrapped herself in a thick blanket, and fell into a deep sleep.
When she woke up the next day, she predictably sneezed, though fortunately, she had no fever or cough. She reflected perfunctorily that she should not overestimate her constitution; sleeping in wet clothes really does cause a chill.
She got up quickly and sought help from her roommate. “Lu Yuan, I was in such a hurry when I came to school that I lost my luggage on the way. Could you be kind enough to lend me a change of clothes?”
Lu Yuan’s voice sounded urgent. “Heavens, Yu Zhouyao, why did you not say so earlier? I will get them for you right now!” She ran into her bedroom and handed Yu Zhouyao two sets of clothes.
Yu Zhouyao thanked her and put the clothes in her room. Thanks to her roommate, she would not have to risk a cold by wearing wet clothes tonight!
Because of this interlude, they did not have much time left in the morning. After a hurried breakfast, they sprinted toward the training ground. They arrived a bit late, and their classmates were already assembled.
Instructor Liu caught them and said angrily, “Late for military training! Do you have no regard for discipline or the rules? Get over here for your punishment!”
Yu Zhouyao and Lu Yuan exchanged a bitter glance and walked over to take the scolding.
“A soldier’s duty is to obey orders and follow discipline. It is the third day, and you are still late!” Instructor Liu paused and shouted louder. “Especially you, Yu Zhouyao! You are a repeat offender. Skipping class on the first day and now late on the third. This is a serious violation and a terrible attitude. You need a heavy punishment!”
Yu Zhouyao sighed. If she had known, she would have run faster; now she had dragged her roommate down too.
Instructor Liu pointed at the track. “Lu Yuan, twenty laps. Yu Zhouyao, thirty laps. Finish within an hour, or you won’t be joining the training today.”
The instructor’s temper seemed to get worse every day. Yu Zhouyao had intended to argue a bit—at least for Lu Yuan but seeing how fierce he was and knowing she was already on his blacklist, she kept her mouth shut.
Before they started running, she whispered an apology to Lu Yuan. “Sorry for dragging you into this.”
Lu Yuan said, “It is fine.”
Yu Zhouyao still felt very guilty. She controlled her speed while running, leading the way for Lu Yuan. She waited until Lu Yuan finished her twenty laps before she accelerated.
After finishing thirty laps in one go, Yu Zhouyao was gasping for air when she stepped off the track. As she joined the squad, she saw Mu Mingyue smiling at her.
Yu Zhouyao returned a polite smile.
Great. What was scarier than being punished by the instructor was being caught in a weak spot by Miss Mu. Yu Zhouyao had a feeling she would be teased by the young miss today.
She could not help but sneeze again.
