- Chapter 10 - The Training Ground Rumors
As a child who grew up on a frontier planet, Yu Zhouyao possessed an almost animalistic intuition. She sensed acutely that Miss Mu was not as innocent as she appeared on the surface.
For instance, at this very moment, she was certain that Mu Mingyue was intentionally trying to make her blush.
Yu Zhouyao took a calm step back, moving outside of Mu Mingyue’s one meter radius. “Is that so? Then I am honored to be Miss Mu’s knight. With your family background, I am sure many people are eager to fall at your feet.”
Yu Zhouyao felt her ears burning. She felt uncertain, suspecting the flush on her face had already betrayed her.
Mu Mingyue tilted her head and gave a light laugh. “Hmm? I suppose so. Many people have indeed tried to get close to me since I was little.” She stepped closer to Yu Zhouyao, lowering her gaze and speaking with a hint of sadness. “But Zhouyao, do you know? They are all so unkind. They either crave the Mu family’s power or lust after my beauty.”
A chill ran down Yu Zhouyao’s spine, fearing the other girl would say something even more shocking. She hurried to comfort her. “Mu Mingyue, you do not need to feel sorry for yourself. Although the world is superficial these days, there are still many sincere people. You will surely meet someone who treats you with a genuine heart.”
Mu Mingyue opened her large, watery eyes. A pool of clear spring water seemed to be openly tempting her. Yu Zhouyao avoided her gaze, not daring to look any longer.
“Yes, Zhouyao, you are right. Thank you for the comfort.” Mu Mingyue gave a shallow smile, revealing her lively canine teeth. She naturally took Yu Zhouyao’s hand and held it between both of her own. “I think Zhouyao is very good. Hehe.”
Yu Zhouyao racked her brain but could not find a proper response, so she could only manage a dry, “You are very impressive too.”
Miss Mu did not seem to notice the perfunctory reply and continued to smile brightly. “Mmhmm, let us work hard together!”
Similar scenes played out in that ward from time to time. Yu Zhouyao often doubted if there were actually any patients in the room, or just two people pretending to be sick.
Every second spent with Miss Mu felt like an ordeal for Yu Zhouyao. She knew deep down that Mu Mingyue was a rose with thorns. If she let her guard down for even a moment, she would fall into the other girl’s rhythm. If she showed the slightest weakness in a conversation, Mu Mingyue would seize the chance to tease her and watch her make a fool of herself.
Everyone has a comfort zone, and Mu Mingyue was Yu Zhouyao’s “vacuum zone.” In the first seventeen years of her impoverished and pitiful life, she had no chance to interact with children of elite families, and she had zero experience dealing with this kind of sly, smiling trouble.
If given a choice, she would rather undergo forty eight hours of continuous interrogation than deal with Mu Mingyue’s frequent “white lotus” act. When a beauty is by your side speaking sweet words, how can it not cloud your mind and bewitch your soul?
Fortunately, her “prison time” in the hospital did not last long. After three days, Dr. Pei finally discharged them. Stepping back into the gates of Dawn Military Academy and breathing the fresh air again, Yu Zhouyao felt that everything was wonderful.
“Zhouyao, Zhouyao?” Mu Mingyue’s voice echoed in her ear again. She waved a hand in front of Yu Zhouyao’s eyes. “What are you thinking about so intently?”
“Nothing,” Yu Zhouyao replied. “Just thinking that I am finally at school and can finally go to class.”
“Mmhmm,” Mu Mingyue nodded. “But the first week is military training.”
Yu Zhouyao smiled. “Training is necessary. We are at a military academy, after all.”
The two of them walked side by side toward the training ground. Even from a distance, Yu Zhouyao could hear the agonizing wails of their classmates.
“Ah! I cannot run anymore!” “I am going to throw up!” “Hah… hah…”
A sturdy, upright man stood in the center of the field; he was clearly their instructor. Yu Zhouyao hurried over to report.
“Hello, Teacher. I am Yu Zhouyao. I was resting in the hospital due to illness, but I have recovered and am requesting to return to the squad for training.”
Mu Mingyue followed suit. “Hello, Teacher. My name is Mu Mingyue. Like Yu Zhouyao, I was too weak and fainted at school, so I could not join the training on time.”
the tough man scrutinized them both and said with a hint of displeasure, “Heh, weak? Why join a military academy if you are sickly? For missing training without a valid excuse, extra punishment!” He pointed a large finger at the field and shouted, “One lap is one kilometer. Forty laps. Start running!”
Yu Zhouyao and Mu Mingyue exchanged a glance. Without arguing, they shut their mouths, started their legs, and obeyed the instructor’s order.
“Wait, are those two…?” “Is that Miss Mu and Student Yu?” “Must be. Only those two were missing on the first day.” “Ah… I am so tired. So they have to run laps too?” “Ooh, let’s see how the instructor tortures those two.” “Stop talking and run. The instructor is looking!”
The whispers of their classmates reached her ears. Yu Zhouyao thought that since they could barely breathe, they shouldn’t have the energy to gossip. If they were caught, they would only get more punishment.
Sure enough, less than two seconds later, the instructor’s roar pierced the air. “You! Several of you! If you have the energy to gossip, add five more laps!”
A chorus of wails rose behind Yu Zhouyao. She smiled and silently increased her speed.
Seeing this, Mu Mingyue accelerated as well. From start to finish, she stayed tucked exactly one position behind Yu Zhouyao’s right shoulder. Yu Zhouyao was not surprised. She knew Miss Mu was extraordinary; an SS rank constitution was truly something else.
Oh, she almost forgot—she was an SS rank too.
Yu Zhouyao turned her head and gave her a deep look. Their eyes met in a silent exchange, and their mental strengths intertwined in the air. In an instant, Yu Zhouyao received her response and began a steady, variable acceleration.
They increased their speed solidly. After ten laps, neither of them was out of breath.
“Want to go faster?” Mu Mingyue signaled with her eyes.
Yu Zhouyao responded with silence. Mu Mingyue laughed, moved from her position behind to run side by side with her, and then changed lanes to overtake her, taking the lead. Yu Zhouyao comfortably accepted Mu Mingyue as the pacesetter. Being the leader was more physically demanding anyway, so she let the young miss have at it.
They finished thirty five laps with ease, as if running on flat ground, leaving their classmates staring in disbelief. Their starting speed had been high, and by constantly accelerating, they had long since lapped everyone else.
With five laps remaining, Mu Mingyue smiled at her and accelerated again. Yu Zhouyao had not intended to follow, planning to just coast through the forty laps to finish the task. But Mu Mingyue wouldn’t allow it. From a quarter lap ahead, she shot her a look.
Yu Zhouyao read a warning in that gaze. Strange, what is she warning me about? She likely already knew about Yu Zhouyao’s true constitution from Dr. Pei.
What wicked women—both of them!
Yu Zhouyao accelerated silently, catching up to Mu Mingyue’s pace. The two of them chased each other, their speed increasing rather than decreasing, showing no sign that they had already run over thirty kilometers. Their endurance was staggering. They accelerated wildly, and for the final two laps, they pushed to their maximum explosive speed to finish the final two kilometers. Sweat seeped from their foreheads, flying into the air with every stride.
When they finally crossed the finish line, Yu Zhouyao used her strength to fight the momentum and bring herself to a stop. Gasping for air, she stammered, “Mu… Mu Mingyue… was that really necessary?”
Mu Mingyue walked to the rest area, grabbed a bottle of water, and tossed it to her. “What was that?”
Yu Zhouyao caught the bottle and took a large gulp. “I said… thank you.”
She heard scattered exclamations of amazement and envy from the others. Seeing how quickly they finished, even the instructor could not help but praise them. “Not bad. My name is Liu. Call me Instructor Liu during training.”
Instructor Liu looked them over carefully and asked with some confusion, “With a constitution like yours… how did you end up in the hospital?”
Yu Zhouyao was slightly distracted, and before she could speak, Mu Mingyue beat her to it. “Report, Instructor. It was a slight issue with our pheromones.”
I knew this little ancestor would not give a straight answer, Yu Zhouyao thought bitterly.
Instructor Liu took the bait. “Ah? Both of you?”
Mu Mingyue nodded slyly.
Instructor Liu looked even more surprised and muttered to himself, “To think two such good prospects would end up together like that…”
Yu Zhouyao felt like weeping. Heaven help me, how can someone be forced to listen to rumors about themselves on their very first day of school?
Instructor Liu ended the small talk and signaled for them to return to the squad. Since it was only the second day and classes had not been assigned yet, the students were arranged by gender (ABO) and then by height.
Mu Mingyue waved at her. “Zhouyao, I am heading off!” The two separated to different rows.
Yu Zhouyao was quite tall, standing at 175cm, so she walked to the back row of her formation. The students in the back row began to chatter when they saw her.
“Hey, you are Student Yu Zhouyao, right? Do you remember me? My name is Lu Yuan,” the girl next to her whispered.
Yu Zhouyao saw that it was a familiar face, the passerby from the school gate that day. “I remember. Thanks for the info. Although there were some bumps, I finally enrolled successfully.”
“No problem,” Lu Yuan replied readily. “Oh, by the way, Student Yu, you are a campus celebrity. Everyone on the forum is gossiping about you. People were even placing bets on when you two would come back.”
“We…?”
“Yeah, you and Mu Mingyue. Since you were both carried off to the hospital that day, some people guessed you were accidentally injured by her pheromones. But it doesn’t look like that to me, you didn’t fall behind at all during that warm up run.”
Yu Zhouyao shook her head. “No. Our illnesses were different.”
Lu Yuan wanted to gossip more, but Yu Zhouyao signaled her with her eyes that the instructor was coming over to start the drills. Lu Yuan quickly shut her mouth and fell silent.
