I Revealed My True Identity After Confessing My Love - Chapter 5
Ye Nanning did not sleep well at all.
This narrow little room being a supervisor’s office was one thing but it just had to be the office of the goddess she secretly liked. What if she accidentally left a dirty footprint on the floor?
Thinking of this, she immediately rose to her toes, opened her eyes, and looked around carefully. She didn’t dare make any big movements and could only quietly admire the surroundings.
Behind the chair was a small bookshelf filled with finance-related professional books. Next to it stood a cabinet for storing contracts and documents.
On the right side of the desk was a floor to ceiling window, and beneath it was a row of potted plants, some on the verge of dying.
She tiptoed over, picked up the spray bottle, and watered the plants. As she slowly inched her foot to the side, she accidentally stepped on the standing coat rack. The rack wobbled, almost toppling over, completely without her noticing.
“Careful.” A low voice sounded behind her.
She turned around to see Du Xiran catching the coat rack for her. She immediately stood up straight and looked at her nervously.
“Why aren’t you sleeping?” Du Xiran propped the coat rack in a corner.
Before Ye Nanning could answer, she heard Du Xiran say to herself, “Can’t sleep? Makes sense. I forgot you just arrived. You probably aren’t used to the environment here yet. After you’ve been here a while, we’ll give you a mat. You’ll be able to lie down and sleep anywhere.”
Ye Nanning pressed her lips together with a smile. When Du Xiran looked over, she pretended nothing had happened, keeping a calm face.
Du Xiran returned to her seat and yawned. “Since you’re not sleeping, then I’m going to sleep.”
Ye Nanning nodded and prepared to return to her own desk. When she opened the door, Du Xiran suddenly let out an “Eh?”
“You watered those plants?” Du Xiran asked.
“Yes.” Ye Nanning apologized earnestly. “I’m sorry, I did it without your permission…”
“Thanks,” Du Xiran said before closing her eyes. “Pretty quick-witted.”
Being praised by her goddess made Ye Nanning’s cheeks warm.
Not long after she returned to her seat, work hours began.
Xu Huan got up and tidied her bedding. Seeing several interns heading out together, she said, “They’re probably going to apply for foldable beds. Why didn’t they call you? Go quickly. It’s easier to apply together.”
“Okay.” Ye Nanning hurried downstairs.
The interns were already filling out the application forms. When Ye Nanning arrived, only a boy from the neighboring class turned to glance at her.
“Fill out the form and head back. Come pick up your bed tomorrow during work hours. Don’t damage it on purpose,” the HR staffer said.
Everyone dispersed. Ye Nanning, the last to finish her form, had just stepped out when the boy followed her out apparently having waited for her on purpose.
“Didn’t expect we’d end up at the same company. I’m from Class 3 name’s Yan Zhenghao,” he introduced himself.
“Mm.” Knowing she’d probably be seeing more of him in the future and that coworkers needed to communicate, she responded politely, “Hello.”
“How come I didn’t see you at campus recruitment?” he asked.
They entered the elevator. With no one else inside, the pressure eased a little. She answered, “I came for an interview during the summer.”
“Oh… Wanna add each other on WeChat?” Yan Zhenghao stepped closer.
“You just stand where you were.” Ye Nanning pointed firmly back to his original position.
“Sorry, I just wanted to add you so that if anything comes up, I can call you,” he explained quickly. “By the way, the others also have an intern WeChat group. No one had your contact info, so they didn’t add you.”
No wonder those who applied for the foldable beds all acted together.
“So… wanna add me on WeChat?” he asked tentatively.
Ye Nanning reluctantly took out her phone. The elevator doors opened and the two walked while scanning codes.
Some interns saw them and teased, “Yan Zhenghao, couldn’t even wait, huh?”
Yan Zhenghao said, “Knock it off, this is legitimate work.”
“Ohhhhh~”
After she accepted the friend request, Ye Nanning headed straight back to her seat. Passing by the teasing intern, she gave her a cold glance and continued walking.
“What’s her problem,” the girl muttered.
Ye Nanning heard it but showed no reaction.
“You’re back? Quickly tidy up, we’re about to have a meeting. It’s your first day just listen and get a feel for things. But try to learn fast. You’ll have to officially participate very soon. The elimination rate here is high,” Xu Huan said while quickly organizing documents. The team members carried their water cups and dragged their chairs toward Du Xiran’s office.
The whole floor returned to its usual busy atmosphere.
“Last one close the door,” Du Xiran said.
Ye Nanning shut the door. The room was already full, so she stood by it to listen.
“The client has decided to list overseas instead. We need to prepare new materials,” Du Xiran summarized.
Xu Huan complained, “Why is this client so fickle? Such a huge decision, changed just like that. And their higher-ups agreed?”
Du Xiran replied, “This was the higher-ups’ decision. They had decent performance a few years back and planned to list domestically. Who knew the entire industry would be hit these last two years? Revenue plummeted. If they want fast financing, overseas listing is their quickest route.”
Everyone understood. But the thought of the materials they painstakingly prepared becoming useless and having to redo everything was exhausting.
“Hang in there, everyone. Let’s try to finish this before the New Year, get our bonuses, and go home on a high note,” Du Xiran encouraged. “And the material we prepared before isn’t all wasted; some parts overlap. Organize them and they’re usable… Ye Nanning, you’ll handle that.”
“You serious, Director Du?” a male colleague said. “It’s her first day and she’s taking on part of such a big project?”
“The project’s big, but there’s always grunt work. Do you have time to organize it now?” Du Xiran asked.
Another female colleague looked uneasy. “If she makes mistakes, we’ll have to fix them later. Won’t that waste even more time?”
Du Xiran paused, tapping her fingers on the table and considering possible consequences.
“I… I can do it,” Ye Nanning suddenly said.
Everyone looked at her. Xu Huan whispered, “This isn’t the time to act out of pride. We’re counting on this project’s bonus can you guarantee you’ll do it right?”
Du Xiran also looked at her. “It’s not a huge job, but not small either. Can you really handle it?”
Hugging her notebook tightly, Ye Nanning nodded under everyone’s curious and doubtful gazes. “I know the listing process.”
“You’ve worked on one before?” Du Xiran assumed it was prior internship experience.
Ye Nanning nodded slowly.
In truth, she had learned simply from growing up by Ye Yiyun’s side. Whenever they were alone, they didn’t talk much. Ye Yiyun would be on the phone discussing projects with employees or clients listing, stocks, bonds, options… these were stamped into her childhood memories.
“All right. Then I’ll leave it to you. Don’t disappoint everyone,” Du Xiran concluded.
“Okay.”
In her heart she added: I will definitely become the intern you’re most proud of!
After the one hour meeting, everyone looked drained, like dried husks walking out of the office except Ye Nanning, who returned to her seat radiant and full of determination.
“Xiao Ye, I’ll send you the previous materials. Check your inbox,” a coworker said.
“I’ll send the list of new materials we need. Prepare them accordingly,” another coworker added.
“Okay.” Ye Nanning rolled up her sleeves, ready to dive in.
Seeing this, Xu Huan laughed. “You heading into battle? Don’t burn out on the first day. Some things take time. Besides this task, don’t forget the modeling and other work you’ve got plenty.”
Ye Nanning nodded.
Soon enough, she wilted like frost-struck eggplant.
There were so many original documents that the printer jammed halfway through.
Well, she understood the steps for listing but she had zero knowledge about printers.
She circled the machine, pressed ‘print’, but it was still jammed. She didn’t dare touch other buttons, afraid it would spit things everywhere.
Just then, someone entered. She turned and saw it was the intern who had teased her earlier Hu Hanqiao, according to her badge.
The two exchanged a brief look. Ye Nanning pressed her lips together, took a quiet breath, and asked, “Do you know how to fix a printer?”
Hu Hanqiao came closer, glanced at the machine, and asked teasingly, “What, you don’t?”
Ye Nanning nodded.
“I thought you were so capable,” Hu Hanqiao muttered, then walked to the door and shouted, “Anyone know how to fix the printer? Ye Nanning broke it!”
The office went silent. Du Xiran, who was about to get water, paused and turned around.
Ye Nanning hadn’t expected her to handle it like this. Embarrassed to the point of wanting to flee, she took a few steps back, staring at Hu Hanqiao in disbelief.
“Look, Yan Zhenghao is already running over,” Hu Hanqiao said with a grin. “Told you he likes you. You still pretend not to know. Do you like him or not? Or are you stringing him along as a backup?”
Footsteps approached from behind. Hu Hanqiao turned. “Yan”
It wasn’t Yan Zhenghao.
Hu Hanqiao had only been here a day, so she didn’t recognize many people. She looked at the woman’s badge, then immediately bowed politely. “Director Du.”
“What’s with the noise?” Du Xiran’s sharp eyes fixed on her. “This is a workplace, not a classroom. What if a client walked in right now? Would you show this as our company culture? Are you going to pay for the loss?”
Hu Hanqiao’s face flushed with shame. “I didn’t mean to.”
“Do you know how to fix a printer?” Du Xiran asked.
Hu Hanqiao shook her head.
“Then the only thing you know is making noise? If you need to print, go use the other printer.”
Hu Hanqiao shambled over to the other machine, eyes red.
Ye Nanning stared at Du Xiran in shock. She didn’t even dare imagine being scolded by her goddess. If that happened, she would probably cry too.
Thinking about it, she chose to apologize first. “Sorry, next time I”
“What are you sorry for?” Du Xiran asked while patting the printer.
“I broke the printer. I’ll pay for it.”
“Pay my ass.”
Ye Nanning froze, staring in disbelief at Director Du who had just sworn. Even Hu Hanqiao looked over, stunned.
“This machine jams a few times a day. Should we replace it every time?” Du Xiran rolled up her sleeves and started fixing the printer. “Learn how to fix a printer when you’re free.”
“Oh… oh.” Ye Nanning crouched beside her, standing up when she did, crouching when she did.
Du Xiran: “…Are you my shadow?”
“I’m your intern,” Ye Nanning said seriously.
Du Xiran: “…”
Ye Nanning watched her hands move and gradually drifted off in a daze. Du Xiran’s hands were beautiful too! And she could even fix printers. So perfect, oh my god!
The machine whirred back to life. Du Xiran pulled down her sleeves. “Done. Did you learn it?”
Uh oh.
Seeing her blank expression, Du Xiran immediately knew she hadn’t. “Forget it. You won’t learn in one or two tries. Watch more next time.”
“Mm.”
Du Xiran lifted her cup to leave, but the second printer jammed too.
She turned toward Hu Hanqiao, who blushed. “I didn’t do it on purpose, it just”
“Did I say anything?” Du Xiran asked.
Hu Hanqiao shook her head.
“When I was fixing the printer earlier, did you learn?”
“No…” Hu Hanqiao said. “Can I trouble you to”
“If you didn’t learn, aren’t you supposed to call someone to fix it?” Du Xiran said.
Hu Hanqiao looked at her, then at Ye Nanning.
“Don’t look at her. She’s my intern. She can create value for me that’s why I help her. What value can you create? Why should I put aside a multi-million-yuan project to fix a printer for you?” Du Xiran said.
Hu Hanqiao lowered her head again.
“What are you standing around for? Go find someone to repair it,” Du Xiran rubbed her temples. The more she looked at Ye Nanning, the more pleasing she found her. She turned toward the pantry. “When you’re done, get back to work. Hear that, Ye Nanning?”
“Heard you!” Ye Nanning immediately carried a thick stack of documents and ran after her. “Director Du, you’re amazing.”
Du Xiran noticed that even her footsteps matched hers. Maybe she was still immersed in the learning process. She smirked slightly. “You’re just dumb.”
