I Revealed My True Identity After Confessing My Love - Chapter 47
After arriving home, Du Xiran was famished. She didn’t even return to her own place before heading straight to Ye Nanning’s house for dinner.
Du Heruo was almost finished eating. Seeing her sister return, she said, “Why are you so busy? Can’t you just take a good rest for a few days?”
“If I rest, are you going to earn money to support me?” Du Xiran picked up her bowl and chopsticks and began to eat.
“I’ll support you! Just wait until I graduate and start making money. I’ll definitely take care of you,” Du Heruo boasted shamelessly.
“Just keep bragging. I’m very expensive; you won’t be able to afford me at all,” Du Xiran replied.
“Then how much money does it take to support you?” Du Heruo asked.
Just as Du Xiran was about to answer, she noticed Ye Nanning watching her intently, seemingly waiting for the answer as well. She smiled and said, “In any case, it’s impossible for you to afford me in this lifetime unless you have the financial power of your Sister Ye.”
Ye Nanning: “!”
President Du, I can support you! Please, give me a chance to support you!!!
Du Heruo looked at Ye Nanning in confusion. “How is Sister Ye able to support you? I think you’re just greedy for the food she makes every day. Providing meals would definitely be enough to keep you alive.”
“Hmm, that’s not bad actually.” Tasting the delicious food, Du Xiran arched an eyebrow. “If you could make food as delicious as your Sister Ye, I’d be impressed too.”
“How hard can that be! Sister Ye, teach me how to cook, okay? Pretty please?” Du Heruo acted spoiled toward Ye Nanning, but she hit a brick wall.
“No,” Ye Nanning said.
“Why?” This was the first time Du Heruo had been rejected by her, and she found it hard to believe. Even Du Xiran looked at her curiously.
Ye Nanning lowered her head, not daring to look at them directly because her “dark” thoughts were unfit for public display.
That’s right, she wanted Du Xiran to eat only her cooking! She wanted President Du to be unable to leave her! No one was allowed to snatch away her status as the “God of Feeding” in President Du’s heart, not even her own biological sister!
“Because… you are a senior in high school. You need to study hard and not get distracted. This soup has gone cold; I’ll go reheat it.” Ye Nanning carried the soup bowl to the kitchen.
Du Heruo leaned in and whispered into Du Xiran’s ear, “Don’t you think Sister Ye is a bit strange today?”
“Is it just today?” Du Xiran gave her a look. “Forget it, stop prying into adult business.”
“What’s wrong? Is there some story between you two? Quickly, tell me!” Du Heruo gossiped.
“It would scare you to death,” Du Xiran said. Looking at the hardworking and beautiful figure in the kitchen, then back at the girl beside her who only knew how to eat, drink, play, and buy trendy brands, she let out a deep sigh. “You two are only three or four years apart. Why is the gap so huge?”
“What’s wrong with me?” Du Heruo’s face fell. “Are you going to praise ‘other people’s children’ again?”
Du Xiran paused. “Are you angry?”
Du Heruo nodded defiantly.
Du Xiran suddenly realized that such a comparison was indeed unfair to Du Heruo. What was Ye Nanning’s family level, and what was theirs?
If their family had that kind of wealth, and she had sent Du Heruo to learn various talents and skills and travel the world from a young age, she would surely be an independent adult by now as well.
Furthermore, even though Du Heruo couldn’t compare to Ye Nanning, she wasn’t doing anything too rebellious. Didn’t she just say she wanted to earn money to support her sister in the future?
She chuckled and patted Du Heruo’s head. “I’m sorry, my mistake. I won’t compare you to Xiao Ye next time.”
“That’s more like it.” Du Heruo’s mood brightened. She leaned her head directly on her sister’s shoulder, took out her phone, and started taking selfies.
Ye Nanning returned with the soup only to see this warm scene. She was incredibly envious, wishing she could soul-swap with Du Heruo just to lean against the fragrant, soft, and beautiful President Du…
“Watch out, don’t spill the soup.” Du Xiran quickly reached out to take the bowl. “How can you daydream while walking?”
Ye Nanning smiled sheepishly. Then, noticing that President Du’s hand was halfway pressing against the back of her own hand, she felt as if she were on fire, her steps trembling slightly.
She carefully placed the bowl on the table, then hid her hands behind her back, secretly savoring the touch.
“Sister Ye, do you want to join us for a photo?” Du Heruo invited.
Ye Nanning felt conflicted. She thought about having a photo with Du Xiran and took a deep breath, preparing to step forward, but then she heard Du Xiran say, “She won’t. She has camera shyness.”
“Really?” Du Heruo looked at her in surprise. “Sister Ye, you have camera shyness?”
Ye Nanning nodded slowly. But she wanted to say it wasn’t that bad, if President Du was beside her, she could overcome anything…
“What a pity! You’re so pretty, yet you’re afraid of photos? Maybe that’s why you haven’t debuted; no talent scouts have found you online!” Du Heruo laughed.
“She doesn’t need to rely on her face to make a living,” Du Xiran said while eating.
“Sis, I’ve noticed you’re always speaking up for Sister Ye,” Du Heruo remarked.
Du Xiran: “Am I?”
Ye Nanning: Am… am I? (*^▽^*)
Du Heruo: “You are. If you like her that much…”
Ye Nanning looked at Du Heruo expectantly, only to hear the second half of the sentence: “…then just take her as a god-sister! That way, we’ll be the Three Beautiful Sisters!”
Ye Nanning: “…” I really misjudged you.
Du Xiran looked at Ye Nanning with amusement. “What do you think?”
Ye Nanning shook her head, her small face exceptionally serious. “Not great.”
Du Xiran was just asking as a joke, but seeing her reject it so quickly, she couldn’t help but be curious. “Why? Do you think I’m not qualified to be your sister?”
Ye Nanning lowered her eyes. “It’s that I don’t want to be your sister.”
“True. If I were you, I wouldn’t want to be someone’s sister either,” Du Xiran said understandingly. She had forgotten again that Ye Nanning came from a powerful family background and was likely used to being the boss, why would she deign to call someone “elder sister”?
“No… you’re not ‘someone else’,” Ye Nanning murmured.
Du Xiran said, “Even though I’m your boss, you’re still unwilling to be my sister.”
“I’m not doing it.” Ye Nanning turned her head away. “You already have a sister. Why do you need so many? You’re so fickle.”
Du Xiran: “?” How am I fickle?
Du Heruo suddenly realized. “Yeah! You already have me, why do you need other sisters? Forget it, forget it. Just settle for me, don’t go looking for other ‘good sisters’.”
Du Xiran was moved to laughter. “Look at how anxious you two are. This was just a baseless idea that you brought up yourself, yet now I’m the one made out to be a sinner.”
During the tutoring session that afternoon, perhaps spurred by Du Xiran, Du Heruo was much more diligent. It seemed she wanted to prove something to her sister.
Ye Nanning was very relieved; the little sister finally stopped pestering her with gossip.
After explaining a difficult problem, she found a few similar ones for the girl to solve. During the mid-session break, Ye Nanning looked up and noticed Du Xiran standing at the doorway, watching them.
Sensing her gaze, Du Xiran gave her a slight smile.
Ye Nanning’s eyes rippled with a faint wave of emotion as she smiled back. She felt this scene was so peaceful and beautiful that it felt like a dream she didn’t want to wake from.
Du Xiran beckoned her over.
She stood up quietly. As she reached the door, Du Xiran glanced inside. Seeing that the focused Du Heruo hadn’t noticed them, she took Ye Nanning’s arm and led her to the living room.
Ye Nanning looked down at the hand on her arm. It felt as if her arm had lost all sensation, allowing itself to be moved at the other’s will.
“Are you still going to tutor Du Heruo?” Du Xiran asked.
Ye Nanning asked in panic, “President Du, do you think I’m not teaching well?”
“No, of course I know you’re teaching well. Her math score went up by over ten points in this monthly exam.” Du Xiran paused, glanced back into the room, leaned in close to her, and lowered her voice. “What I mean is, I originally asked you to be a tutor because I wanted you to earn some extra pocket money. But now, you don’t need to earn this kind of small change at all.”
Because of the close proximity, Ye Nanning stared at the opening and closing of her lips. Her ears felt hot. Greedily, she said, “I didn’t hear clearly. Can you say that again?”
“You didn’t hear that?” Du Xiran had no choice but to lean in closer, whispering in her ear, “You don’t need to earn this tutoring money anymore. Will you continue to teach Du Heruo? If you aren’t going to, I need to find a replacement.”
Warm breath brushed against the skin around her ear, causing an itch. Ye Nanning secretly pinched her own palm to keep her expression from slipping. Maintaining a “cool” face, she said, “I will continue to teach her.”
“Really?” Du Xiran backed away a bit, looking at her half-doubtingly.
Ye Nanning: “…” Aiyah, I should have kept saying I didn’t hear! Why are you moving so far away?
“Don’t you think the money is too little? I’ve already given the highest hourly rate within my budget, it’s impossible to raise it, so you have to think it over,” Du Xiran said.
“It’s a hassle for her to change teachers midway. Besides, I already think of Du Heruo as my own sister…” Ye Nanning said shamelessly. She felt a bit embarrassed herself, but Du Xiran clearly didn’t catch the underlying meaning.
“That’s good then. Ye Nanning, you really are a top-tier good person,” Du Xiran praised.
Ye Nanning: Not at all, you’re too kind, I’m flattered, hehehehe.
“Then go back to class. I’m going out for a bit.” Du Xiran patted her shoulder.
“Where are you going? Do you need me to drive you?” Ye Nanning asked.
“No need, just some private business.” Du Xiran picked up her car keys and twirled them. “You two stay home and wait for me to come back.”
Ye Nanning wanted to ask more, but it wasn’t appropriate. She replied, “Okay, we’ll wait for you to come back.”
Wait for you to come back…
Ye Nanning chewed on those words in her mind, finding a trace of sweetness in them.
After the tutoring session, Du Heruo went to sleep or perhaps to her room to play on her phone.
Ye Nanning returned to her own room. Regarding the idea that everyone should have their own space, she was the strongest proponent.
Being alone is the best!
While she was looking up thesis materials, the doorbell rang. She looked through the peephole, then quickly opened the door, saying with a straight face, “President Du, you’re back so soon.”
“Yeah. Are you the only one here?” Du Xiran walked in, holding a bag.
“Yes, Heruo is in her room,” Ye Nanning said, moving to pour her some water.
“Don’t bother, I’m going back in a moment.” Du Xiran pulled her back and handed her the bag. “Look at this. Do you like it?”
“What is it?” Ye Nanning just glanced at the shopping bag; the brand logo was extremely prominent. Curiously, she opened the box inside and took out a brand-new handbag. She looked it over and said, “It’s beautiful.”
“Good. It’s for you,” Du Xiran said with a sense of relief.
Ye Nanning looked at her in surprise. “For… for me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?” Ye Nanning quickly scanned the calendar in her head. Today wasn’t Valentine’s Day, Qixi, Christmas, New Year, or her birthday (or even her death anniversary). Why was she giving a gift?
“A return gift,” Du Xiran smiled. “You gave me such a beautiful bag, shouldn’t I return the favor with an even better one?”
Ye Nanning quickly explained, “I didn’t give that to you just to get a return gift.”
“I know, but one shouldn’t accept rewards without merit. Regardless of your intention, I can’t just accept such an expensive item from you for no reason,” Du Xiran said.
Ye Nanning: “But…”
“No ‘buts’. I’m your boss. We haven’t known each other long, and I haven’t really helped you with much. I’ve mostly just been giving you work to do. There’s no reason for me to accept a grand gift from you.” Du Xiran said righteously, “Ye Nanning, I accept your kindness, so you must accept my sentiment as well.”
Ye Nanning finally understood why Hu Jiaxu had previously mentioned not giving gifts that were too large. For some people, receiving a grand gift is a joy for others, it’s a burden.
“Okay, I understand… I won’t do it next time. I’m sorry.” Ye Nanning lowered her head.
Seeing her looking dejected and self-reproachful, Du Xiran couldn’t help but affectionately pat her head. “I’m not blaming you. I know you have a good heart. I just don’t want there to be too much of a financial exchange between us, understand?”
Ye Nanning nodded. She looked up at her and secretly rubbed her head against the palm of Du Xiran’s hand.
“But, if I want to express my affection and gratitude toward you, what should I do?” Ye Nanning asked sincerely.
“Then just send socks or gloves like you did before?” Du Xiran laughed. “Actually, there’s not much to thank me for. At most, I haven’t scolded or treated you harshly at the company. Besides, being able to eat your food every day already makes me feel very lucky. What other boss has it this good?”
Ye Nanning’s eyes suddenly lit up. “Then I’ll make lunch boxes for President Du from now on. That way, you won’t have to order takeout at noon.”
Du Xiran: “Won’t that be tiring for you?”
“No, you don’t eat much anyway. It’s just a small extra effort.” Ye Nanning was firm, so Du Xiran could only agree, thinking to herself that next time she paid for living expenses, she’d have to include the lunch money.
Ordering takeout at the office every day was getting a bit tiring. Since she knew absolutely nothing about cooking, she was actually quite tempted by Ye Nanning’s offer.
The next morning, Ye Nanning got up excitedly to prepare the lunch box. It was a balanced meal of meat and vegetables, with some fruit. She even paid special attention to the plating, it looked professional and appetizing to anyone who saw it.
“President Du, this is your lunch.” Ye Nanning had the lunch tote ready and helped her put it in the car. “Remember to take it up later.”
“Okay.” Du Xiran had never seen someone provide such attentive service. She was already starting to worry if she didn’t have her around in the future, how would she survive going from “luxury to simplicity”?
At lunchtime, Du Xiran took the lunch box to the pantry’s microwave to heat it up. Some colleagues saw her and were stunned.
“Old Du, you actually brought lunch?!”
“What, is that not allowed?” Du Xiran was secretly proud. She opened the lid of the lunch box, and her smile suddenly froze.
“Yo yo yo yo~ Did someone make this bento for you?” A female colleague laughed. “There’s even a heart made of seaweed on top of the rice! Could it be a sweet ‘little puppy’ you’ve been hiding?”
Other colleagues gathered around to watch, laughing and teasing her.
Du Xiran: “…”
Ye Nanning, who was silently observing the commotion from her desk, buried her head: “…”
It’s over. She was so excited about making the bento for President Du that she forgot the microwave was in a public area!
Ugh, is President Du going to kill me?
Also, did President Du receive my little heart?
