I Revealed My True Identity After Confessing My Love - Chapter 34
The agent and Du Xiran looked at each other, both seeing the same confusion in the other’s eyes. They even wondered if they had hallucinated.
While they were still in a daze, Ye Nanning had already walked in and forced herself into the small gap between the two of them, despite all the empty space around.
Du Xiran turned her head to look at her, her face full of doubt. “Why are you here?”
Ye Nanning choked for a second and said, “I came to find you for dinner, Director Du.”
“Dinner?”
“Yes, dinner. I wanted to ask what you wanted to eat tonight so I could go buy groceries.” Ye Nanning felt that her ability to make things up on the spot was getting stronger, she didn’t even blush while lying now.
“So you came all this way for that?” Du Xiran found it hard to describe the complexity of her feelings, a mix of surprise, curiosity, a hint of being touched, but mostly confusion. “How did you know I was here?”
“It’s not far,” Ye Nanning said.
Du Xiran: “…” Was that the point?!
Du Xiran didn’t want to argue about the distance or the reason she was there anymore, because there was a bigger mystery at hand. “What did you mean by that sentence just now? What ‘marriage proposal’ do you disagree with?”
Ye Nanning turned her head and stared at her intently. “Director Du, you are good. You are very good.”
“And? Is this turning into a morning assembly slogan session?” Du Xiran asked.
Ye Nanning shook her head and looked down at the floor dejectedly. Her submissive appearance looked somewhat pitiful. “I just hope you consider it more. Don’t make such an important decision on your own.”
The agent finally understood, this girl was here to sabotage his business!
The agent immediately chimed in: “Miss Du, it’s rare to find something suitable. You have to strike while the iron is hot. If you miss this chance, you won’t find it again. Don’t you agree?”
Ye Nanning snapped her head around to glare at him. His looks were mediocre at best, where did he get the confidence to think he was worthy of her gentle, beautiful, kind, generous, noble, elegant, and ethereal yet cute and mischievous Director Du! Hmph!!!
The agent was startled by her gaze but had to keep pushing the sale. He asked, “Miss Du, this beautiful lady is…?”
“My friend,” Du Xiran replied.
Ye Nanning’s pupils trembled as she felt a secret joy. This time, Director Du didn’t introduce her as an intern, but as a friend!
The agent calculated his moves. Since they were all friends, he couldn’t just shove the beauty aside. The best way was to win her over.
“Miss Du, since your friend is here, let’s all go in and take a look. I guarantee you’ll like this apartment,” the agent said.
Du Xiran nodded and followed the agent out, Ye Nanning followed as well.
The agent took out a large bundle of keys and began searching for the right one.
Ye Nanning thought: What a wealthy family!
“This place just became vacant. The renovation is still new,” the agent introduced as he pushed the door open. “If you move in, you can skip the renovations and move in with your bags. The area is quite large. You can add a partition in the living room to make the space look even bigger.”
Du Xiran walked around the house while the agent led her through the tour. “Here is the bathroom. It has separate wet and dry areas and a bathtub. It’s perfect for ladies to take a bath and relax after a tiring day at work.”
As Ye Nanning listened, her heart sank into sorrow.
They were already discussing how to decorate and live in it. Was the next step meeting the parents and setting a wedding date?
The three finally reached the balcony. Du Xiran looked at the scenery outside. When the agent asked if she liked it, she only gave an ambiguous answer: “I’ll wait for my friend to come and let her decide.”
“Sure, no problem,” the agent said.
Du Xiran sent a message to Zhang Mishuang, urging her to hurry up; she really didn’t want to deal with the enthusiastic agent anymore.
After putting away her phone, she suddenly felt like she had lost something. She spun around and searched her bag before realizing, where did the “little kid” following her go?
“Ye Nanning,” Du Xiran called out. No one answered.
“Ye Nanning, where did you run off to?” Du Xiran hurriedly began searching.
“Miss Du, your friend is here,” the agent said, pointing toward the bathroom.
Du Xiran walked to the door and looked inside. She saw Ye Nanning sitting on the toilet lid with a dazed expression, looking like she was contemplating life, though she looked more like she was constipated.
“What’s wrong with you?” Du Xiran breathed a sigh of relief. She walked over, squatted in front of her, and pinched her cheek. “What are you thinking about in here?”
Ye Nanning snapped out of it, her eyes fluttering before slowly landing on Du Xiran’s face. “Director Du…”
Her voice was soft and weak. If someone didn’t know better, they’d think she had suffered a great injustice.
“I’m here,” Du Xiran said. “What on earth happened? Tell me.”
Ye Nanning turned her head away, afraid she would disgracefully burst into tears.
To think such a wonderful Director Du would get married and move into a new house with someone else, the thought alone was heartbreaking.
“Did something happen?” Du Xiran glanced at her hands but didn’t see a phone. She hadn’t seen her call anyone in that short time, so she really couldn’t understand what was going wrong. Yet this girl wouldn’t say a word, wearing an expression that said, “Just let me die of grievance.”
Just as Du Xiran was about to press her for answers, Ye Nanning suddenly glanced at the man in the suit standing at the door. Filled with jealousy and losing her fear of talking to strangers, she asked bluntly, “What is your name?”
Du Xiran was stunned and looked at the agent in confusion.
The agent looked around blankly and pointed at himself. “Beautiful lady, are you asking me?”
Ye Nanning nodded and asked again, “What’s your name?”
“I’m Liu Lifa,” the agent said, somewhat fearfully. Despite his disbelief, he couldn’t help but let his thoughts wander. Was this beautiful woman… hitting on him?
“How old are you?” Ye Nanning asked again.
Agent: “…” She’s hitting on me, right? This is definitely a move! Heavens, I actually have a day where a great beauty hits on me!?
The agent straightened his tie and cleared his throat. “I’m twenty-six.”
Too young, Ye Nanning thought. Director Du is twenty-nine, he’s not a match… wait, isn’t there a saying about a woman being three years older being like a gold brick?
Ye Nanning moved to the next question: “How many people are in your family?”
“Only child,” the agent blushed. “My family has a few properties that will be mine later. I also have some savings and plan to change to a new car at the end of the year.”
Ye Nanning didn’t know what level those properties were. Were they all in this neighborhood? Then he was considered wealthy. Plus, he was getting a luxury car, he was indeed a good blind date prospect for the working class.
Thinking of this, Ye Nanning lowered her head in dejection.
Even if she wanted to stop this marriage, what right did she have?
She was just Director Du’s intern. They had only known each other for less than two months. At most, she was a new friend and a neighbor.
Why would Director Du give up her happiness for her?
“What is wrong with you?” Du Xiran realized she was being very abnormal. From the moment they met today, she had acted strangely, especially now by interrogating an agent.
Looking at the agent’s red face and eager eyes, Du Xiran was shocked…No way? Does Ye Nanning like this type of man?
Although love is free and others shouldn’t interfere, she still held a bit of a stereotype. A girl as outstanding as Ye Nanning should like a “chosen one” or a multi-millionaire, or at the very least, not someone she just bumped into.
Did Ye Nanning have a unique taste? Like in CEO novels where the overbearing president falls for the cleaning girl? Was that why she blurted out that she didn’t agree to the marriage? And now she was sad… was it love at first sight with this agent?
Ye Nanning was still young. Du Xiran feared she was being led astray by internet novels and felt she must make her realize that reality and fictional romance are different.
Thus, Du Xiran asked the agent, “Is your job busy?”
“It depends on the peak and off-peak seasons, but generally, it’s quite busy,” the agent replied, feeling like he was suddenly in a blind date scenario.
What’s going on? Weren’t we looking at a house?
Ye Nanning looked at Du Xiran, thinking that she was already concerned about the man’s work. Her heart felt heavy as she asked, “Is it convenient to know your income?”
The agent’s pupils dilated. Asking about income? This is looking very promising!
But he wasn’t sure what her expectations were, so he answered with a popular internet joke: “My monthly salary is just under a million.”
Ye Nanning gasped and looked at him in surprise.
Seeing this, Du Xiran shook her head inwardly, feeling that this was likely going to happen, and couldn’t help but feel sorry for Ye Nanning… Wait, why am I feeling sorry for her?
If she found someone she liked, shouldn’t I congratulate her?
A strange emotion flashed through Du Xiran’s mind, and then she suddenly realized, this agent was lying!
How could she be so distracted? This man was an agent; how could his monthly salary be nearly a million? He was lying to her innocent intern!
Du Xiran got angry. She didn’t give the agent another look, grabbed Ye Nanning, and said, “I have something to say to you. Come with me.”
The two walked to a corner. The agent waited nervously not far away, unsure if they were discussing the house or the “blind date.”
Ye Nanning glanced at the agent and then looked back. Seeing Du Xiran staring at her intently, she said dejectedly, “Director Du…”
“Congratulations to you.”
“I don’t agree.”
Both spoke at the same time.
Then, both were stunned.
“What did you say?” they asked in unison again.
“…”
“…”
After a long while, Du Xiran asked blankly, “What are you congratulating me for?”
Ye Nanning swallowed and asked curiously, “Then Director Du, what did you mean you don’t agree? Don’t agree to what?”
Du Xiran: “I obviously don’t agree with you being with that man.”
Ye Nanning: “??”
Du Xiran, seeing her silence and thinking she was being stubborn, said, “He’s deceiving you. He’s an agent, how could he make nearly a million a month?”
“But what does that have to do with you not agreeing… wait, what did you say? He’s an agent!?” Ye Nanning widened her eyes, looking at her in disbelief.
“Yes, he’s an agent. You just met him, what do you like about him?” Du Xiran really couldn’t understand. “Besides, don’t you already have someone you like? Are you planning to switch targets that quickly?”
Ye Nanning realized they had created a massive misunderstanding. As she sorted it out, she suddenly covered her mouth and laughed, whispering, “Director Du, you didn’t think I liked him just because I was asking questions, did you?”
Du Xiran: “Otherwise?”
“I thought you two were on a blind date and I was scouting for information for you,” Ye Nanning said.
Du Xiran: “…” There were so many things wrong with that, she didn’t know where to start.
Du Xiran: “Who told you I was on a blind date?”
Ye Nanning was silent.
Du Xiran guessed: “It was Du Heruo, wasn’t it? Just wait until I get back to deal with her.”
“No, no, we were just guessing wildly.” Ye Nanning hurriedly pleaded for Du Heruo and then followed up, “So you’re looking at houses because you’re buying a new one?”
How could Director Du be moving right after she moved nearby?
“It’s Zhang Mishuang who wants to buy. We just finished looking at another building, and her boyfriend just arrived. The two of them are re-touring that one. I found them too lovey-dovey, so I came to see this one with the agent first,” Du Xiran explained.
“I see.” Ye Nanning felt like she had come back to life; the dead embers were glowing again!
Du Xiran also realized the absurdity of it and laughed softly. “What a mess. I was wondering how you could fall in love at first sight so quickly. Love at first sight is usually unreliable.”
“It is reliable,” Ye Nanning denied her statement very seriously. “The person I fell in love with at first sight is very reliable. I like her very much.”
Du Xiran smiled and asked, “The person you’re secretly in love with?”
“Mhm!”
“Then he is quite lucky,” Du Xiran laughed.
Ye Nanning opened her mouth, almost letting the truth slip out, but she stopped herself in time.
The time isn’t right yet. I can’t act rashly and scare her away. I have to take it slow, Ye Nanning thought.
At this time, Zhang Mishuang finally arrived with her boyfriend. As soon as she entered the room, she asked, “Ranran, how is this apartment?”
“See for yourself,” Du Xiran said.
Zhang Mishuang walked over and suddenly smiled. “Why is Xiao Ye here too?”
“She moved to my area. She had nothing to do during the holiday, so she came along to look,” Du Xiran explained the misunderstanding away in a few words.
“That’s nice. Having a neighbor makes things livelier. It’ll be fun to have dinner at your place next time,” Zhang Mishuang laughed. “Since Xiao Ye is here, she can be an advisor. Help me see if this house is good.”
The agent introduced the house to Zhang Mishuang and her boyfriend again. While they were looking around, the agent couldn’t help but peek at Ye Nanning, wondering if she actually liked him.
So, the agent began to test the waters, smiling as he chatted with Ye Nanning.
Ye Nanning gave a forced smile and awkwardly stepped back. However, the man didn’t catch her drift at all, thinking she was just shy, and began smilingly introducing his family situation.
Noticing the situation, Zhang Mishuang tugged on Du Xiran’s sleeve, nodded in that direction, and whispered, “What’s going on? Does the agent have his eye on Xiao Ye?”
Du Xiran held her forehead.
“Being pretty means it’s easy to be targeted,” Zhang Mishuang joked.
Du Xiran: “…” This time it really wasn’t the agent’s fault, they had given him the wrong signal.
Just as Du Xiran was about to go over to clear things up, she saw Ye Nanning retreat into a corner impatiently and blurt out:
“I’m sorry, I like women.”
