I Revealed My True Identity After Confessing My Love - Chapter 3
“W-wait, no,” Ye Nanning quickly said. “I just heard that Director Du Du, Du, Director Du has been working so hard and didn’t eat breakfast, so… this is an egg, a boiled egg I made myself.”
Rank really did crush people. She actually managed to say all that in one breath. Amazing! She was killing it!
A moment later, Director Du let out a soft laugh. As she took the egg from Ye Nanning’s hand, she asked Xu Huan, “Did you tell her something bad about me? Look how scared she is.”
“Heaven and earth as my witnesses, I only said you were good-looking,” Xu Huan said quickly.
“Y-yes, that’s right,” Ye Nanning tried to help explain, but the moment she lifted her head, she saw that face she’d been dreaming of day and night. Her legs gave out entirely, and she collapsed straight to the floor.
“What are you doing?” Director Du asked in surprise. “Isn’t it a little early to start giving New Year’s greetings?”
Some employees outside saw the scene and burst out laughing. Someone shouted, “Old Du, you’re something else you even scared an intern into kneeling!”
Xu Huan hurriedly lifted Ye Nanning up, but just as she was about to stand, her legs went soft again.
“What the heck is wrong with you?” Xu Huan said, struggling to hold her up.
Hearing this, Du Xiran also came over to support her on the other side. “Could it be she’s sick?”
Suddenly, Ye Nanning reached out and pinched Du Xiran’s cheek.
Du Xiran: “?”
Xu Huan: “??”
Ye Nanning snapped back to reality. It was real! That was a real cheek!
She actually got to see her goddess again at such a close distance! She was completely dizzy with happiness.
“What is wrong with you?” Xu Huan shouted, panicked. “You’d better have a reasonable explanation or you might get fired.”
Ye Nanning instantly remembered where she was and tried to control herself. “I’m sorry, I thought Director Du was… a friend I know.”
“You mistook me for someone else?” Du Xiran asked.
“Yes.”
“Alright then, as long as you’re not sick.” Du Xiran walked back to her seat. “Your tasks Lisa should’ve already talked to you, right?”
“Yes.” Ye Nanning sat properly in the chair across from her. Inside, her heart was already rolling like stormy waves, but on the surface, she looked completely calm.
Seeing this, both Du Xiran and Xu Huan started wondering whether they had hallucinated what just happened.
“You can head back,” Du Xiran told Xu Huan, who nodded and gently closed the glass door as she left.
“What’s your name?” Someone had brought a résumé over, and Du Xiran picked it up.
“Hello, my name is Ye Nanning.” She finally got to say the sentence she’d rehearsed countless times. Her thigh was already red from pinching herself, yet she still tried to look calm. “For the next while, I’ll be your person please take good care of me.”
Du Xiran paused and looked up. “What did you just say?”
“I mean you’ll be my person from now on, um…”
Du Xiran: “……”
What kind of disastrous line was that?
But since she understood what Ye Nanning meant, she didn’t bother correcting her. Her gaze moved from Ye Nanning’s beautiful, striking features down to the small photo on the resume still pretty, even in an ID picture.
“Finance major from B University, same school as Xu Huan.” Du Xiran read on. When she reached the certificates section, she froze. “You passed both the CFA and the bar exam?”
Ye Nanning nodded.
Du Xiran looked at her in surprise, silently scolding herself for her earlier stereotype assuming a gorgeous girl like this would have a mediocre resume. Turns out she was an actual academic powerhouse. No wonder the company signed her as early as summer.
“Your TOEFL and IELTS scores are both high. Why didn’t you choose to study abroad? You could’ve tried for an investment bank on Wall Street,” Du Xiran asked.
Ye Nanning bit her lip. “Family reasons.”
Du Xiran nodded and didn’t probe further. She continued reading. “You interned at two other companies?”
“Yes. During the last two summers. The internships didn’t last long they only had me do printing and basic chores.”
“Printing isn’t an easy job.” Du Xiran replied. “Especially in our company.”
Ye Nanning straightened her posture. “Yes. Printing is extremely difficult.”
Du Xiran: “……”
This intern was a bit strange, but that was understandable. New grads were always overly obedient.
Still this one was very obedient, but also extremely serious. She looked a bit cold.
“You know valuation and modeling?” Du Xiran asked.
“Only a little,” Ye Nanning said honestly. “The last two companies didn’t teach me much since my internship periods were short they only gave me printing and tea serving.”
Just then, Du Xiran’s phone vibrated. Looking slightly annoyed, she picked it up. “Alright, I got it. You can go for now. Get a model from Xu Huan and try building it yourself. I’ll check it later.” With that, she answered the call and walked out, speaking fluent English.
To Ye Nanning, her voice sounded like celestial music. How could someone this beautiful also speak English so beautifully? She was impossibly perfect.
As Ye Nanning stood to leave and pushed her chair back into place, a sudden thought struck her. She looked at the desk. No nameplate.
The desk was very messy, but she resisted the urge to tidy it and returned to her workstation.
“How did it go?” Xu Huan asked.
Not entirely sure what exactly Xu Huan meant, Ye Nanning simply answered by intuition: “Director Du really is beautiful.”
“No kidding, she’s the flower of our entire floor! I meant what did she assign you to do?” Xu Huan said.
“Oh. She wants you to give me a model, and she told me to try building it.”
“Alright. You downloaded Excel?”
“Yes.”
“Pretty sharp.” Xu Huan sent her a file via the company messaging app. “The intern I trained before spent a whole morning failing to install Excel and spent the rest touching up her makeup and gossiping.”
Ye Nanning asked, “Has Director Du trained interns before?”
“Nope. I only transferred here recently. Her previous assistant quit after giving birth. Come to think of it, you’re probably her first intern she’s never trained anyone before.”
A spark of joy lit in Ye Nanning’s heart. Was this destiny? Had Director Du been waiting for her?
“Why?” she asked.
“Why else? Promotion,” Xu Huan said. “Every VP has to lead a team and train interns. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be fair to the other VPs. She was just promoted and had to learn how to deal with clients, so she never had time to train anyone. Now that she’s more experienced, she finally does.”
Ye Nanning’s beautiful fantasy evaporated completely.
But that was fine. She would become Director Du’s most outstanding, most unforgettable intern!
…Wait. Something else was off.
Xu Huan was focused on work when she suddenly received a message from Ye Nanning on the corporate chat.
She glanced at Ye Nanning, who was staring at her screen as if she had nothing to do with it.
Opening the message, Xu Huan was instantly speechless.
Ye Nanning:
Excuse me, what is Director Du’s full name?
Xu Huan could not understand her thought process and was thoroughly shocked. Still, she sent the name.
Du Xiran.
Du. Xi. Ran.
Ye Nanning repeated the three characters over and over, chewing them in her mouth before tucking them into her heart.
Even her goddess’s name sounded beautiful. Absolutely perfect.
She opened Excel and started working. A quick look at the sheets showed thousands of lines of data.
Even though they only worked in Excel, producing a complete valuation model from such massive data wasn’t easy. It would take more than a day.
This was just practice once she got the hang of it, she’d have to take responsibility for full models with no room for error. Senior staff needed her numbers to negotiate with clients. Even tiny mistakes could cause huge losses.
As always, once she got busy, Ye Nanning devoted herself fully. She had always studied and taken exams the same way.
It wasn’t until she heard the sound of chairs dragging that she realized it was lunchtime.
She quickly grabbed her phone to order delivery.
Seeing this, Xu Huan asked, “You’re ordering takeout? Didn’t you see the group message?”
Ye Nanning looked at her in confusion, then opened the corporate chat. Over an hour ago, Director Du had posted a message.
[Du Xiran]:
No need to order takeout. Lunch is on me let’s welcome our new colleague.
[Xu Huan]:
Got it! 🎉
[Wang Zemin]:
🎉
[Chen Shuimin]:
🎉
A line of welcome emojis followed. And the person being welcomed her hadn’t appeared at all!
Oh no. Would they think she was difficult to work with?
After she replied, she felt something was still off and added another line.
[Ye Nanning]:
Everyone.
Everyone: “………………”
Someone snorted first, then the rest burst out laughing.
Xu Huan bent over laughing. “Xiao Ye, you’re actually kind of adorable.”
She’d been complimented!
Ye Nanning turned to her with a straight face and said seriously, “Thank you.”
Xu Huan’s smile froze. She slowly straightened up, unsure what to say.
Ye Nanning: TAT I didn’t mean to.
“Is everyone here?” Du Xiran walked out of her office and glanced at them. “Let’s go. The table’s already booked.”
“Yay!” Xu Huan cheered energetically, linking arms with her colleagues.
Ye Nanning followed at the back, eyes glued to Du Xiran’s silhouette. She had imagined walking behind her goddess like this so many times. If not for the noise around her, she might’ve thought she was dreaming.
It was lunchtime, so despite intentionally going a bit late, there were still many people waiting for the elevator.
They had to split up. Xu Huan and the others squeezed into the earlier elevator.
“We’ll head to Royal Breeze Restaurant first?” she asked.
Du Xiran nodded.
On the next elevator, Du Xiran stepped in. As she turned around, Ye Nanning walked in and bumped straight into her chin.
“Are you okay?” Ye Nanning asked immediately, instinctively touching her chin.
“I’m fine,” Du Xiran said.
Realizing what she did, Ye Nanning jerked her hand back. “Sorry.”
“It’s okay. Why were you so quiet back there? I thought you’d already taken the other elevator.”
Ye Nanning didn’t answer. She was busy drowning in bliss.
Ahhhhh! She touched her goddess’s chin with her own hand!
She was never washing this hand again she was going to bronze it!
