I Revealed My True Identity After Confessing My Love - Chapter 27
The air stagnated for a moment.
Du Xiran pricked up her ears and confirmed once more: “What did you just say about a child?”
Ye Nanning snapped back to her senses, waving her hands frantically. “I meant… what is the name of the child in your family?”
“Oh, her name is Du Heruo,” Du Xiran said. “If you’re free, should I take you to meet her now? Or wait until you come over for tutoring this weekend?”
Ye Nanning looked down at her current outfit. It wasn’t formal enough; how could she possibly meet President Du’s elder…no, family member like this?
She decided immediately: “Let’s wait until the weekend.”
“That works, it’s more convenient. Then it’s a deal? Can you come this week?” Du Xiran confirmed.
“I can,” Ye Nanning said.
Once the matter was settled, Ye Nanning began to look forward to the weekend. Of course, she wasn’t looking forward to being a tutor, but rather to the chance to visit President Du’s home!
Despite her anticipation, work over the next few days felt like a battle. To complete the acquisition project, the team members worked overtime almost every night.
After the new model was developed, Du Xiran informed President Chen that it wasn’t a perfect match. It didn’t offer long term benefits and only solved short term problems, making it essentially a zero-profit deal.
However, President Chen seemed eager to sell, requesting only that they didn’t lose money selling to this company was within expectations. After all, the branch office was still in a deficit phase, and dragging it out would only result in more losses.
“I understand how you feel, but I really don’t want to see such a large branch office just tossed away. How about this: let’s keep this company as a backup plan. Give me one more week to see if I can find a better buyer.”
After much persuasion, President Chen agreed, but only granted a three day extension.
Du Xiran reached out again to clients she had spoken with previously. One person in charge of a network technology company finally softened. They hadn’t reached an agreement last time because the schedule was too rushed, but this time they could discuss it in detail.
“Xu Huan, are you free? Come on a business trip with me regarding the acquisition client. Let’s try to secure them this time,” Du Xiran said, walking over to the workstation.
“Okay.” Xu Huan was naturally good at handling acquisition projects and finally had time to travel with her. She hurriedly packed her documents. “Which materials should I bring?”
Du Xiran listed the name of the client’s company and, just in case, told her to bring files for several other companies as well.
Ye Nanning watched them prepare to depart with organized efficiency, feeling incredibly envious of Xu Huan. But she also knew that in the workplace, ability always wins. In the critical phase of a final battle, there was no reason for President Du to abandon a veteran for a rookie like her.
She could only work harder so that President Du would notice her.
“Oh, right, Ye Nanning,” Du Xiran suddenly turned back and called out.
Ye Nanning snapped her head up to look at her.
“Prepare a PPT for the client presentation. Get it done as soon as possible; I’ll check it when I return. Also, remember to water the plants in my office,” Du Xiran said.
“Understood! Mission will be accomplished!” Ye Nanning said, full of energy.
Because of the tasks Du Xiran had assigned, Ye Nanning focused intensely on her work, making the days without seeing her feel less unbearable.
On Friday, while Ye Nanning was monitoring data, a girl suddenly came to ask her for advice.
It was a female intern from A University. They didn’t usually interact much, but the girl had never shown her any malice. When Hu Hanqiao had targeted her before, this girl had even helped Ye Nanning out of the situation.
“I’m so sorry to bother you. My assistant and the VP are both out, and I’m too embarrassed to ask anyone else,” the girl blushed. “I wanted to ask about a data error, how should I adjust this?”
Ye Nanning stood up immediately. “I’ll go take a look with you.”
“Okay.” The girl led her to her desk and pointed to an error on the spreadsheet. “Right here.”
Ye Nanning sat down, adjusted the data, and asked, “Does this make sense to you now?”
“I think I get it, but it’s not quite clear.”
“Which part?”
“How did you switch this?” The girl pointed to a certain row.
Ye Nanning stared at the screen and explained it thoroughly. The girl nodded repeatedly. “I understand now. Thank you!”
Ye Nanning nodded and prepared to leave. The girl called her back and took a few chocolates out of her drawer. “Have some of these.”
Ye Nanning’s mouth did feel a bit tasteless, so she took them. “Thanks.”
“I should be the one thanking you.” The girl smiled, watched her leave, and then said to Hu Hanqiao at the opposite desk, “Ye Nanning is really amazing.”
Hu Hanqiao said, “She’s capable, but a bit arrogant. You smiled at her for so long, and she didn’t smile back once.”
“You can’t force that on people. There’s no rule saying everyone has to be all smiles. You have to accept different personalities, as long as she’s kind-hearted,” the girl replied. She didn’t feel like chatting with her anymore, sat back down, and saw her Enterprise WeChat flash.
Ye Nanning: [Chocolate tastes good, thanks.]
Hu Jiaxu: [You’re welcome! Are you busy?]
Ye Nanning: [Mhm.]
The girl smiled and glanced at Hu Hanqiao again, feeling that she had a prejudice against Ye Nanning.
Maybe it was because she liked Yan Zhenghao, or maybe she refused to believe a pretty girl wasn’t just a “vase” (eye candy), so she insisted on finding flaws in Ye Nanning to pick at.
Hu Jiaxu privately messaged Hu Hanqiao: [Ye Nanning is actually quite nice, you should try to get to know her.]
Hu Hanqiao: [I’m busy. Who has time to get to know someone? She’s already blocked out social life to focus on work and money. Why should I take the initiative to approach her?]
That one sentence left Hu Jiaxu speechless. She turned back to her chat with Ye Nanning and said: [Let’s grab a meal sometime.]
Ye Nanning: [I don’t really have time on workdays.]
Hu Jiaxu: [How about the weekend?]
Ye Nanning: [I have a part time job on the weekend.]
Hu Jiaxu: “……”
As expected, those smarter than you are also more hardworking! She’s already interning at Zhenghe, yet she still takes on part-time jobs on the weekend. How inspiring!
During lunch, the interns sat together. Hu Jiaxu mentioned this to the others, praising her: “See? Ye Nanning is practically my role model!”
The others chimed in with praise, except for Yan Zhenghao and Hu Hanqiao, whose expressions were different.
Yan Zhenghao was speculating about who Ye Nanning actually liked. Hu Hanqiao was secretly gloating; since the posts about her being “kept” were deleted, almost no one could accurately state Ye Nanning’s family background. Now it seemed that, wearing cheap clothes every day, she wasn’t actually wealthy at all.
In the afternoon, while Ye Nanning was working, she suddenly heard a colleague say, “President Du and the others are back.”
Ye Nanning snapped her head up, glanced at Xu Huan, who was walking with unsteady steps in front and then locked her gaze firmly on the travel-worn Du Xiran behind her.
“Oof, finally back.” Xu Huan practically ran to her workstation, slumped over her desk as soon as she sat down. “I’m exhausted.”
“What was the result?” a colleague asked.
Du Xiran passed by, stood before them, and said, “It’s a success.”
“Yay!!!” the colleagues cheered.
Ye Nanning couldn’t hide her excitement either, secretly pumping her fist.
Du Xiran looked around and then at the youngest, Ye Nanning. “Help me order afternoon tea for everyone. My treat.”
Colleagues: “Awesome!!!”
After Ye Nanning opened the delivery app and ordered for everyone individually, she went to the office to ask: “President Du, what would you like to eat?”
“Just order something for me randomly,” Du Xiran said casually.
Ye Nanning picked out a fruit bowl, a cup of fruit juice, and a piece of cake that was sweet but not greasy.
Once the afternoon tea arrived, she distributed it to everyone and then brought Du Xiran’s portion into her office.
“This cake tastes pretty good.” Du Xiran took a bite, looking surprised. “Which shop is this from?”
Ye Nanning told her the name of the store.
This was a “hidden gem” she had discovered. Because they didn’t do marketing, it wasn’t a trendy “influencer” shop, but the taste was actually better than many of them.
“Not bad. You really are a good food buddy.” After Du Xiran finished her praise, she took a sip of the juice. It was sweet and sour, washing away her fatigue.
Seeing her eat happily made Ye Nanning happy too, and she took a sip of her own juice.
“The plants are well-maintained too. Good job. Come to my house tomorrow,” Du Xiran said, her words startling.
“Pfft..”
Ye Nanning sprayed her juice, frantically grabbing tissues to wipe the desk and her mouth.
Du Xiran: “…What? Are you trying to back out of being a tutor already?”
Oh, that!
Ye Nanning’s mind had almost taken a sharp turn. Snapping back to reality, she said, “I’ll do it. I’m coming. I’ll definitely be there tomorrow.”
“Alright. My sister is in a residential school; she’ll come back tomorrow and have lunch. Come over around 3:00 PM.”
“Mhm.”
Because she was going to the Du residence, Ye Nanning was so excited she didn’t sleep well all night. When she woke up the next day, it was a tragedy.
She stared at the faint dark circles in the mirror, sinking into a deep state of “appearance anxiety.”
After applying makeup, she regained a tiny bit of confidence.
But… what should she wear?
She opened her wardrobe, automatically filtering out the high-end designer clothes, and turned instead to the items she had bought online for under a hundred yuan, beginning a journey of outfit coordination.
Putting clothes on and taking them off, she was never satisfied.
She nearly missed lunch. Finally, after picking through everything, she chose a floral dress with a sweater over it.
Simple, plain, conventional, it fit the intern persona perfectly. Most importantly, it was a skirt.
She always wore pants at the office, she wanted to show President Du a different side of herself.
Following the location Du Xiran sent, she took a taxi to the neighborhood. It was about a twenty-minute drive from the company, located in the city center, so property prices were very high.
She stood outside the door, staring at the doorplate for a long time, then took a deep breath and pressed the doorbell.
“Coming.” The sound of Du Xiran’s footsteps echoed from inside. “Is that Ye Nanning?”
Ye Nanning quickly adjusted her hair and then forced a smile for Du Xiran as she opened the door.
“You’re quite early. We just finished eating. Have you eaten?” Du Xiran asked.
“Mhm.” Ye Nanning checked the time. It was already 2:30 PM. She looked at her in disbelief. “You just finished lunch?”
“Yeah, woke up late, and the delivery was delayed,” Du Xiran said, finding a pair of new slippers for her. “Come in first.”
Ye Nanning changed her shoes and then cautiously looked inside, full of curiosity about President Du’s home.
But with just one glance, she was stunned..
Clothes were piled everywhere on the sofa, messy delivery boxes sat on the dining table, two slippers lay haphazardly on the floor, and the items in the cabinets were in total disarray.
“Sorry, it’s a bit messy. I’m sorting through seasonal clothes. Just bear with it for now,” Du Xiran said, pulling her to sit on the sofa. “You’re early, the part time cleaner hasn’t started her shift yet.”
Ye Nanning: “……”
It was over. The “perfect goddess” filter seemed to have shattered.
Ye Nanning found an empty spot on the sofa to sit. Du Xiran picked up a piece of clothing that had fallen on the floor in front of her and casually tossed it aside.
Ye Nanning: “……”
…You just moved it to a different spot!
Ye Nanning looked at her in surprise, noticing she was wearing loungewear. Her hair was casually clipped back, her face was bare of makeup, and her entire aura had changed.
She wasn’t the decisive, high and mighty female leader from the office at all. Instead, she was a woman who lacked life skills, more grounded and much more approachable.
“What would you like to drink?” Du Xiran asked.
“Anything is fine.”
Du Xiran went to get a drink and nearly tripped on the way. Ye Nanning stood up ready to catch her, but fortunately, Du Xiran seemed used to it. She continued her stride unharmed and then shouted: “Du Heruo, come out quickly! Your tutor is here!”
Ye Nanning was still processing the shattered goddess filter. Leaning back against the sofa, she felt something behind her. She reached out and pulled it in front of her to look..
Ye Nanning: !!!
“I’m coming, why are you shouting so loud? It’s not like I won’t study. Where’s the teacher?” Du Heruo came out of her room and saw what was in Ye Nanning’s hand. “Ah!”
“What’s all the fuss about?” Du Xiran also looked over, only to see a flustered Ye Nanning holding a black bra.
“No… I didn’t mean to.” Ye Nanning waved her hands, the bra swaying in her palm. She quickly put it back in its original spot, even carefully adjusting the angle, and pointed at it: “It was just sitting here like this, I swear! You can check the surveillance cameras if you don’t believe me!”
Du Xiran: “……”
Du Heruo: “……”
