I Revealed My True Identity After Confessing My Love - Chapter 23.2
It was infuriating. Every school holiday was the biggest headache for Du Xiran, they always ended up arguing over small things.
In the heat of the moment, she sometimes wanted to call her parents and send this rebellious teenager back to their hometown for school.
But thinking about the education level back home, she could only keep Du Heruo in B City, spending money to send her to a private elite school, hoping she would have a better future and see the world. So, whenever she saw her on her phone, Du Xiran’s blood pressure rose, automatically assuming the girl was wasting her studies again.
She mentioned this to Zhang Mishuang. Zhang Mishuang came over directly to cook for the sisters and comforted her, “Why bother arguing with her about this? What kid doesn’t play on their phone nowadays? Besides, she’s so big now and has her own world. Don’t be too strict, or she might hold a grudge against you.”
“She dares to hold a grudge? I’ll break her legs.” Du Xiran directed her words at the door.
“Would you have the heart to?” Zhang Mishuang jokingly pushed her toward the kitchen. “Come, what do you want to eat tonight? I’ll make it for you.”
“Spicy chicken and steamed fish head with chopped peppers.” After ordering, Du Xiran sat on a high stool by the kitchen, watching her cook. “Do you think we were this disobedient when we were rebellious?”
“That’s because we didn’t have smartphones back then, the way of rebelling was just different,” Zhang Mishuang said while chopping vegetables. “Did you forget? You were in a relationship when you were a high school senior.”
Du Xiran’s throat tightened. “Don’t bring it up. I’m about to vomit up last year’s New Year’s dinner.”
“Is the trauma that bad?” Zhang Mishuang laughed.
“Of course. I only had that one short relationship, and the experience was terrible,” Du Xiran curled her lip.
“Are you really not interested in men anymore?” Zhang Mishuang teased.
Du Xiran shrugged. “I don’t know. Anyway, the thought of dating a man is just annoying. Making money is more practical.”
Zhang Mishuang laughed loudly. “Fine. You become a rich woman soon, and I’ll dump my boyfriend to live with you.”
“It’s not impossible.” Du Xiran also laughed. “Only women truly understand women. Maybe living together would be happier, right?”
“Exactly!” Zhang Mishuang laughed heartily.
During dinner, Du Heruo emerged from her room as if nothing had happened, holding her test paper. “How do you do this question?”
Du Xiran laid it on the table and looked at it while eating.
Du Heruo chatted with Zhang Mishuang for a bit before asking, “Sis, why haven’t you solved it yet? Are you incompetent?”
“Who are you calling incompetent? I just can’t multitask. I’ll solve it properly for you after I finish eating.” Du Xiran gathered the papers with an air of importance and put them aside.
After dinner, Zhang Mishuang exchanged a look with Du Xiran and then said to Du Heruo, “Your sister and I are going out for a walk. Stay home, be good, and go to bed early.”
“Go, go quickly!” Du Heruo retreated to her room happily.
“Heh, she can’t wait for me to not come back,” Du Xiran “tsk” and followed Zhang Mishuang to the bar.
She didn’t like drinking for business purposes, but meeting with friends to release stress and enjoy a drink was perfectly fine. When tasks piled up at work, she needed an outlet to vent.
She had only finished half a glass before she started complaining to Zhang Mishuang about several workplace issues.
Zhang Mishuang had a much higher alcohol tolerance. She listened to the venting while drinking to her heart’s content. Glancing around casually, she noticed several men staring in a particular direction. Following their gaze, she saw someone sitting in a booth diagonally ahead. She nudged Du Xiran: “Look, there’s a huge beauty over there. She’s gorgeous.”
“I’m complaining to you about my boss, and you’re here looking at beauties?” Du Xiran looked over, exasperated.
“So what? Humans pursue beautiful things. Looking at a beauty is eye candy,” Zhang Mishuang joked. “Didn’t you say you wanted to find a woman to settle down with? Don’t look at me, just go for that beauty. She’s so pretty she could turn me gay on the spot.”
As soon as the words left her mouth, Du Xiran downed her drink in one go, grabbed her bag, and walked straight toward the booth.
“Hey, what’s going on? You’re actually going? Are you drunk?” Zhang Mishuang hurried after her.
Arriving at the booth, Zhang Mishuang saw her sit right down across from the beauty. She had no choice but to say awkwardly, “I’m so sorry, my friend is a bit dr….”
“Director Du,” the beauty suddenly called out.
“Director Du? Director Du?” Zhang Mishuang repeated, then snapped her head toward Du Xiran. “You two know each other?”
Du Xiran nodded. “This is my intern.”
Zhang Mishuang was amazed. She sat down beside her, her eyes scanning the girl. “Why didn’t you mention your intern was this good-looking?”
“I was afraid you’d make the exact face you’re making now,” Du Xiran said, then looked at Ye Nanning. “Are you here alone?”
Ye Nanning hugged her glass and nodded, then looked at Zhang Mishuang with confusion.
“I’m her childhood friend,” Zhang Mishuang introduced herself with a smile.
“Hello,” Ye Nanning lowered her head and took another sip of her drink.
“Aren’t you afraid of the danger, being alone?” Du Xiran asked.
Ye Nanning shook her head. “I won’t get drunk, and I know Sanda (Chinese kickboxing) and Muay Thai.”
Zhang Mishuang: “Impressive.”
Du Xiran rolled her eyes at her friend and said, “Then let’s join her.”
Zhang Mishuang called the bartender over to order more drinks. Du Xiran inquired, “Are you just here for a drink, or are you in a bad mood?”
Ye Nanning looked at her glass and said, “Director Du, I want to… resign.”
Du Xiran froze, staring straight at her. “Why? Give me a reason.”
“I… I don’t want to stay at Zhenghe. I want to change companies,” Ye Nanning said slowly.
Seeing her look so heartbroken, Du Xiran asked, “Are those your true feelings?”
Ye Nanning looked up at her and nodded.
“If you really want to leave, why are you crying?”
Hearing this, Ye Nanning wiped the corner of her eye and realized she was actually crying. She hurriedly looked for a tissue. Someone suddenly handed one to her, she took it and wiped her tears.
Du Xiran didn’t ask for specific reasons, subconsciously assuming it was because of the rumors on the forum. She said gently, “Since you don’t actually want to leave, don’t waver. Just work hard. No one can guarantee your future except yourself. Don’t let others influence your decisions so easily.”
Ye Nanning nodded.
Zhang Mishuang sensed the atmosphere wasn’t quite right and decided to give them some private space. “I’m going to the restroom.”
“Thank you, Director Du,” Ye Nanning said.
“Since you want to thank me, do me a favor,” Du Xiran said.
“What is it?”
Du Xiran sat directly next to her. The scent of alcohol drifted over, making Ye Nanning’s body stiffen slightly. Her eyes were moist as she looked at her; under the neon lights of the bar, Du Xiran’s features appeared even more vivid and moving.
Ye Nanning swallowed unconsciously, staring blankly, wondering what she would be asked to do.
Would this be a “drunk and losing control” moment?
“You haven’t graduated yet, so you should still know how to do high school senior math, right?” Du Xiran pulled a test paper out of her bag. “The last two big problems, want to give them a try?”
Ye Nanning: “…”
Zhang Mishuang timed her return, thinking they should be finished talking. But when she sat back down, she saw a scene where, in a setting fueled by alcohol and emotion, the beautiful intern was obediently solving math problems while Du Xiran supervised from the side.
Zhang Mishuang: “…”
Du Xiran, for the love of god, be a human being!
