Chapter 7: Win Another Bottle
“You really… in order to get Xiao Bai’s orders, you’ve used almost all your connections, running through the entire building.”
“You must win the beauty’s heart!”
The auspicious clouds had been patched back together, though they were covered in seams. Xi Jiang thought they looked better this way. Wiping her sweat, she said in high spirits: “It’s still early~”
Just as she turned the corner of the stairs, she encountered the shifty-eyed Qin Yue. As soon as Qin Yue saw her, her body trembled slightly, and she hurriedly scrambled up the stairs.
Xi Jiang didn’t care. She went to Sister Yun’s place as usual. As soon as she entered the shop, she met Sister Yun’s teasing gaze.
“There’s one for today~”
“Great! Then I’ll come back to work tomorrow. Bye-bye, Sister Yun~” Xi Jiang immediately turned around with a smile, leaving behind the sound of Sister Yun laughing and shaking her head: “You little ingrate.”
Although she called it “work,” because she was mainly delivering food now, she had negotiated with Sister Yun so that she only delivered packages in the afternoons.
However, unexpectedly, there were packages for Shen Yubai for several days in a row. It seemed she had many classes lately; Xi Jiang missed many of her food delivery orders at the teaching buildings, only running into her occasionally on the road.
Shen Yubai had only a few sets of clothes that she rotated through, but they all looked very expensive. With her fluffy long curls, she remained a loner, radiating an aura that warned strangers not to approach.
Every time they met, Xi Jiang would give her a silent greeting with a blooming smile.
Then, in the languid afternoons, she would run up the stairs out of breath to deliver her packages.
After nearly half a month, just when even the livestream was starting to wonder why Shen Yubai had packages every single day, Xi Jiang was called to a halt.
She turned back with a smile to look at Shen Yubai, who had stopped her, and asked softly: “What’s wrong?”
This was the first time Shen Yubai had her hair tied up, revealing her smooth neck. She wore a white sweater and loose wide-leg pants—styles that clearly shouldn’t match, yet looked exceptionally good on her.
It seemed she had just washed her face; the light brown mole between her brows was still damp with moisture. Her lips were pressed tight, and her skin was white and translucent.
Xi Jiang stared at her silently for a few seconds before she finally spoke: “Do you have time lately? I’ll tutor you.”
She paused, and then as if adding an afterthought, she extended her hand from behind her back: “No charge.”
A bottle of a drink was held in her hand and offered. Xi Jiang struggled to move her gaze to the bottle. She hadn’t been thirsty before, but now she felt her mouth and throat go dry.
She swallowed and naturally took the drink, twisting it open immediately. She took a few sips to steady herself. Seeing the “Win Another Bottle” message on the cap, she handed it over and broke into a wide grin: “Thank you, little sister. Let’s start tonight. We’ll go to the library. I’ll come find you after I finish delivering the rest of the packages.”
“I will provide compensation. I can agree to whatever you want, little sister~”
The corners of her “peach blossom” eyes tilted upward into a natural curve. Her voice carried intimacy as she mimicked Shen Yubai’s way of adding an afterthought.
Shen Yubai looked at her flushed cheeks and sparkling eyes. For a moment, her heart felt flustered. Clutching the bottle cap, she said first: “Go home, eat, and take a shower first. No rush, seven or eight o’clock is fine.”
Then she turned and went back into her room.
She did indeed need a wash. Xi Jiang glanced at her uniform and quickly turned to sprint downstairs.
In truth, Shen Yubai’s package was the last one. She always liked to time her deliveries to reach her at exactly 5:20 PM.
“Oh, how nice~ Sweetness after the bitterness.”
“I’ve followed for an entire day and finally saw progress between you two. I’m moved.”
Xi Jiang gave the livestream an incredibly sincere smile, then grabbed a meal on the way and went home to tidy herself up.
She intentionally wore a jacket and brought several subject books she needed to review, some unfinished problems, and a notebook. Riding her “Little Mianyang” scooter, she set off.
When she knocked on Shen Yubai’s door, it was exactly 6:30 PM. Xi Jiang waited obediently, hugging her books.
In less than ten seconds, the door opened. Shen Yubai hadn’t changed her clothes, but her hair was tied high, revealing her full, smooth forehead, making her look youthful and bright.
Xi Jiang was stunned for a moment. Shen Yubai looked up to meet her gaze: “Let’s go.”
“Mhm,” she replied with a smile after regaining her senses.
The two walked down the stairs side-by-side. Xi Jiang walked to the electric scooter first. After setting her books down, she put her hands behind her back, looking somewhat embarrassed: “I don’t have a helmet, but I’ll drive carefully.”
“Mhm.”
Shen Yubai gave her a simple “mhm” in return. She still felt calm and cold. Xi Jiang tilted her head slightly and gave her a smiling glance before getting on first. Once she saw in the rearview mirror that the other was seated, she started the scooter.
The moment the scooter moved, Shen Yubai instinctively grabbed Xi Jiang’s fluttering jacket. The night wind was a bit chilly but very comfortable. She kept her head down, her expression unreadable, but her fingers were gripping the fabric tightly.
This was truly her first time riding an electric scooter, and her first time returning to the library after a long while.
It felt… good.
After following Xi Jiang to park the scooter, the two walked into the library together and found a quiet spot.
She had said she couldn’t find a way to learn on her own, and it was true.
The foundation was too poor, but fortunately, she wasn’t stupid. If she didn’t learn after three explanations, she would learn after five. Shen Yubai never lacked patience. Her voice was crisp and pleasant, and Xi Jiang would curl the corners of her mouth while listening to her speak, practicing over and over.
They taught and learned for an unknown amount of time; time seemed to fly by. Xi Jiang finished several problems, and when she looked up again, she saw Shen Yubai had fallen asleep leaning toward her on the table.
The mole between her brows seemed to glow a faint red against the light for some reason. Her sleeping face was peaceful, light and shadow seemed to interweave and dance upon her eyelashes, and her shallow breath brushed a few stray hairs falling by her temples.
Xi Jiang instinctively leaned closer to her, using her height advantage to block out all the light for her.
She wore a smile, wanting to get just a little bit closer…
But she didn’t see the frantic bullet comments in the livestream.
“Quick, quick, quick, push their heads together!”
“Which Immortal friend is going to sacrifice themselves!”
“Let me do it! I’ll come to your house tomorrow to watch the stream.”
Then, several admin notifications flashed in the livestream.
“Immortal Friend No. 66 has been forcibly expelled for violating the rules of the Heavenly Way.”
“Immortal Friend No. 36 has been forcibly expelled for violating the rules of the Heavenly Way.”
Under the push of a massive invisible force from behind, Xi Jiang’s lips directly kissed Shen Yubai’s eye. Her pupils dilated instantly, and she swallowed several times, hurriedly using her elbow to prop herself up. Her lips slid down Shen Yubai’s skin with the movement, finally landing on her cheek, but she was truly stuck and couldn’t move.
With such a loud noise, Shen Yubai was startled awake. When she saw the bookshelf above her head and Xi Jiang shielding her from above, she felt an indescribable emotion, completely ignoring the moist, soft sensation on her cheek.
The librarian heard the commotion and ran over to check, then ran out to call for help. It took dozens of minutes to get them out. The librarian kept muttering: “These two unlucky kids. Four or five bookshelves fell in a row. Luckily, no one was hurt.”
“This young lady is so good; her first reaction was to shield the other person under her.”
The librarian auntie praised Xi Jiang like this. Xi Jiang laughed awkwardly. Shen Yubai seemed like she hadn’t quite recovered yet. Xi Jiang naturally took Shen Yubai’s hand and walked out of the library.
Luckily there were buffers nearby and the shelves weren’t too heavy. Xi Jiang only felt her body was a bit sore. Once outside the library, Shen Yubai suddenly stopped in her tracks and looked up at her: “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine, I have a long life ahead of me~” Xi Jiang smiled effortlessly and pulled her down the steps, her tone very slow: “You must have been scared. Go back and rest first.”
Shen Yubai lowered her head, letting the other lead her onto the scooter. She had just started to feel that these past few days were slightly less unlucky—it turns out a “big move” was being saved up.
Feeling the slight cool breeze, she looked up and actually tugged on Xi Jiang’s jacket, shaking it once. Her heart was filled with guilt: “Tomorrow, we’ll go somewhere else to help you study.”
She was so kind; she had to help her fulfill her wish.
“Okay~” Feeling that Shen Yubai’s detached attitude had softened, Xi Jiang couldn’t help but laugh. Her voice, mingled with the wind, blew into the ear, feeling soft and sweet.
She dropped her off downstairs and bid her farewell with curving eyes. The moment the other’s back disappeared into the stairwell, the corners of her mouth flattened into a straight line as she looked at the auspicious clouds hiding behind her.
The auspicious clouds seemed very natural.
“Little Xi is so pitiful. It must be that Xiao Bai is too unlucky. Pat her head.”
“Oh my, what just happened?”
“What just happened was… they kissed.”
“Wuwuwu, so scary.”
Xi Jiang couldn’t hold it in; her expression returned to normal. She got on the scooter and waved to the auspicious clouds, driving toward her rental.
Forget it, at least she got a kiss.
The auspicious clouds humanized themselves by shrinking into a ball to follow her.
Shen Yubai walked into her room feeling quite exhausted and turned on the light. She didn’t even pay much attention to the small animals in the room that usually scared her; she directly opened a bottle of a drink and took a few sips to catch her breath.
But just as she recovered, she saw the four large characters clearly on the bottle cap: Win Another Bottle.
The sudden surprise left her at a loss; God knows she had dreamed of getting those four words.
Calming down, she gripped the bottle cap, her thoughts drifting. A flush of crimson gradually spread from behind her ears to her cheeks.
It was because… Xi Jiang kissed her.
Xi Jiang didn’t sleep well all night. Staring at the ceiling, her eyes were dark and deep; no one could guess what she was thinking.
The auspicious clouds curled up on the floor and rolled around, not daring to disturb her.
“So terrifying, we absolutely cannot let Luo Fengming return!”
“Shhh~”
“So, brothers, when one of you dies, there’s always a successor.”
“You guys are so mean. Little Luo is so friendly, loving, and harmonious~”
After delivering food all morning, Xi Jiang felt an unbearable fatigue after eating. She knocked on Shen Yubai’s door.
Taking the food, Shen Yubai saw her tired and pale face and couldn’t help asking: “What’s wrong?”
“Little sister, can I lean here and rest for a bit?”
Xi Jiang showed a fragile expression, her lips extremely pale. Shen Yubai frowned, hesitated for two seconds, and stood aside to open the door.
Her room was terrifyingly neat and clean. Inside, it wasn’t the single bed one might imagine; instead, a bunk bed stood in the middle. The lower level was just the bed board, while the upper level was tightly hidden by bed curtains, which felt a bit eerie.
But Xi Jiang didn’t think much of it. She walked to the nearby table, sat down, leaned over, and suddenly fell asleep.
Shen Yubai glanced at her curiously again and again until she confirmed she was truly asleep, leaning over the table with her back curved, the corners of her eyes tracing a beautiful arc. It was very quiet.
On her table sat the “Win Another Bottle” from last night. As if possessed, Shen Yubai walked to her side, looking at her long fingers resting on her arm, slightly curled. Even the fingernails were so warm and beautiful.
She lowered her head and suddenly bit down gently. Her tongue even pressed against it slightly, her teeth grinding softly.
The moment she realized what she was doing, Shen Yubai’s face was filled with disbelief. But looking at Xi Jiang’s clean profile, she swallowed, then gritted her teeth and opened the drink sitting to the side.
It was another “Win Another Bottle.”
In that moment, her heart beat incredibly fast, as if all the blood in her body were rushing.
