I Really Don’t Want to Fall in Love with the Female Supporting Character [Quick Transmigration] - Chapter 5
Chapter 5: Obsession
“The rain is too heavy; let me walk you back to the dormitory.”
Xi Jiang’s gentle voice masked the faint sounds of nearby conversations as people scrambled for cover. Meeting her gaze, Shen Yubai suddenly felt a flutter of panic in her heart.
She avoided the other’s eyes, but the rhythmic drumming of raindrops against the umbrella perfectly matched the frantic pace of her heartbeat.
“Being friends is okay too…” Qin Yue was soaked to the bone. She refused to let go of Shen Yubai’s hand, her voice weak and laced with tears.
Inside the nearby tent, the cheering seemed to have frozen. Many eyes were fixed silently on this corner.
A complex flicker of emotion appeared in Shen Yubai’s eyes. This wasn’t the first time a girl had confessed to her—gender had never mattered to her—but she loathed this atmosphere, where she felt pressured to give an explanation.
To put it bluntly, she didn’t even know this person. Why should she soften her stance just because someone looked pitiful?
In the past, Shen Yubai would have politely declined. But this time, a spark of irritation flared up in her heart, much like this sudden rain and her unexplainable racing heart.
She searched for a reason to refuse—one that would guarantee her peace and shut down any future female suitors once and for all.
Xi Jiang watched her silently. Even when looking slightly indignant, Shen Yubai was beautiful.
Then there was that eyesore of a hand gripping her, and that glaring jacket she was wearing. The jacket was too big; it didn’t suit her at all.
As the rain intensified, Xi Jiang’s smile faded. Her gaze moved from the hand to Qin Yue’s face. She advised, “Student, the rain is too heavy. You should go find some cover first.”
“What does it have to do with you? Are you even worthy of calling me a ‘student’?”
Rain lashed against her face, making it hard for Qin Yue to keep her eyes open, yet she suddenly barked at Xi Jiang before turning stubbornly back to Shen Yubai.
Clearly, this “student” knew Xi Jiang was just a delivery worker. Xi Jiang wasn’t angry; she simply glanced at Shen Yubai’s arm, which was bent slightly from being grabbed. A long-absent feeling of depression surfaced in her heart.
It began to erode her soft heart, turning her inner thoughts obsessive and resentful, making her want to shatter the gentle exterior she had so carefully maintained.
She didn’t want Shen Yubai to see her angry side and think she was strange, driving her away.
Faking an air of indifference, Xi Jiang’s tone toward Qin Yue became even more polite: “I am indeed not a student of A University, but you seem a bit overly obsessed right now. You should go seek shelter.”
Qin Yue acted as if she hadn’t heard a word. Seeing that Shen Yubai hadn’t responded to her plea, she grew anxious and stepped forward, reaching out with her other hand to grab her inside the umbrella.
In that instant, Shen Yubai recoiled two steps, wrenching her hand out of Qin Yue’s grip with force. She was truly furious; she had never met someone so pushy. Without further hesitation, her words were chillingly cold: “I don’t like girls, and I will never like you.”
She doesn’t like girls…
Xi Jiang had been quick enough to intercept Qin Yue’s reaching hand, but Shen Yubai’s attitude felt colder than the rain, causing the negative emotions she had just suppressed to surge forth.
So, she didn’t like girls.
Was there any point in staying close to her?
The rain suddenly slackened. Despite the rejection, Qin Yue wanted to keep struggling—after all, her father had won her mother over through sheer persistence. She tried to shake off the hand holding her arm, but a sudden sharp pain radiated through it. She looked up just as a bolt of lightning illuminated the endless gloom in the eyes of the woman before her.
A sinister gale blew in, accompanied by noise and panic from behind.
“What is wrong with this weather!”
But all traces of a smile had vanished from Xi Jiang’s face. Her long, loose hair whipped in the wind; her skin was pale, her lips red.
She looked like… a Shura.
As that thought echoed in her mind, Qin Yue felt as if she were under a spell. She couldn’t escape or pull away from that gaze. She trembled, her vision falling into a deep, abyssal black, as if she were seeing the nightmare she most wanted to escape from.
An emaciated, dying woman screamed at the top of her lungs: “Qin Yue! For money, you teamed up with that beast to harm me! I didn’t raise a bloodsucker like you! You will all die a horrible death!”
“You will all die a horrible death!”
Qin Yue stepped back, but her ankle was suddenly grabbed by something. Fear flooded her eyes, tinged with red. She looked down slowly and, in the dim light, saw a withered hand emerging from the ground, clutching her ankle tightly. On the ring finger was a specific ring.
It was her dead mother’s ring. She recognized it instantly. Overcome with terror, tears mixing with rain, her legs gave out and she collapsed to the ground, scooting backward in desperation. “Don’t come for me! Don’t come for me! I had no choice!”
Ah, so she’s being haunted by something…
Xi Jiang let out a slow, mocking smile, her eyes utterly cold.
In the darkness, lines of text appeared beside her, making her look even more eerie—though no one else could see them.
“It’s gone crazy. Is this a piece of Luo Fengming’s consciousness causing trouble?”
“Definitely. Otherwise, where did our cute, gentle Little Xi go!”
“Tsk tsk, this student must be seeing the thing she fears most.”
“Sure enough, even without magic, Luo Fengming’s eyes can still reflect the evil in people’s hearts as always.”
“Am I the only one worried that Xiao Bai doesn’t like girls? Does our Little Xi have no chance? How tragic!”
“Should we just give up? Weren’t we supposed to be working hard and catching vengeful spirits? (Hint hint) Don’t let the livestream chat lead you astray!”
Even though the light from the nearby tent reached them faintly, the wind and rain were so chaotic that no one could tell what was actually happening.
A touch of coolness on her wrist suddenly snapped Xi Jiang out of it. She skillfully adjusted her expression and turned to find Shen Yubai’s hand resting on the umbrella handle just below hers, pushing the umbrella slightly toward Xi Jiang.
Shen Yubai’s gaze flickered to Xi Jiang’s shoulder—half her body was soaked. She frowned and looked at Qin Yue, who was sitting in the rain. “What’s wrong with her?”
“I don’t know. She just became like this when I touched her. Maybe it’s my fault.” Xi Jiang half-closed her eyes, looking down. She projected an air of profound dejection, as if she truly believed she had caused Qin Yue’s state.
Seeing her like this, Shen Yubai bit her lip and naturally grabbed Xi Jiang’s sweater to pull her around, offering a rare complaint: “It has nothing to do with you. Let’s go. There’s just something wrong with her.”
“Mhm.” Xi Jiang looked down at her. Shen Yubai’s brow was slightly knit, her long lashes casting shadows in the distant light. Her face was cold, yet her hand remained tightly gripped on Xi Jiang’s sweater.
Xi Jiang bit her lower lip and lowered her gaze, the corners of her mouth curling into a smile that masked the depth of her thoughts.
So what if she doesn’t like girls? I’ll make her change her mind.
After all, if she wanted something, nothing could stop her.
Xi Jiang suddenly remembered her own past.
She had been born under the gaze of almost universal disappointment. Upon her birth, the Xi family’s business skyrocketed overnight, but no one attributed this luck to her. Her parents lived their own separate lives, and she grew up in indifference.
“D*mn it, can’t you teach your daughter? She’s so slow just getting a pair of shoes.”
“You think I wanted to give birth? Teaching a girl… it’s a miracle I didn’t throw her away.”
Fortunately, her grandmother, the family matriarch, truly cared for her. So, Xi Jiang learned to wear a mask. She played the role of the obedient, sensible child, hiding all her resentment. By subtly letting it slip that she was being mistreated, she eventually tore apart the hypocritical marriage of the couple squandering the family fortune.
Since they hate each other so much, they might as well be apart.
The grandmother was utterly disappointed in her sons, declaring that as long as they could produce an heir and maintain a harmonious marriage, they could use her checks indefinitely.
It wasn’t until a capable grandson was finally born that the grandmother passed away. With the only source of warmth gone, Xi Jiang had no desire to stay there.
Unnoticed, the sound of rain on the umbrella faded. After walking for a while, Shen Yubai’s mood calmed. She looked up and stared at Xi Jiang for a few seconds.
The way Xi Jiang held the umbrella was elegant, her long fingers resting lightly on the handle. The red of the umbrella under the quiet streetlamps made her features look even more beautiful and refined. That smile had never changed—it was always warm—but Shen Yubai sensed a hint of sadness within it, like someone who was untainted by the world yet utterly alone.
As they walked side-by-side, Shen Yubai looked back at her own toes and said softly, “The rain has stopped.”
Startled by her voice, Xi Jiang looked up from her thoughts. She closed the umbrella and smiled. “Do you get packages often? I’ve recently started handling Building 14 of Qiyang Garden. I’ll make sure they’re delivered as fast as possible.”
“The rain stopped, so I’ll be heading home now.” She turned her body slightly, preparing to leave.
The dormitory was just ahead, but Shen Yubai called out to her. Xi Jiang thought she might be afraid of the dark, but after a few seconds of silence, the girl asked hesitantly, “Do you really have very good luck?”
“Does the luck of people who get close to you really improve?” Shen Yubai blinked, her eyes full of sincere curiosity.
She heard Xi Jiang let out a soft, pleasant chuckle. Then, Xi Jiang reached out a hand.
There were slight calluses on her palm, and the lines of her hand were a bit rough. Her smile was the kind that made one drown in it unconsciously—a feeling that made you trust her from the bottom of your heart.
Shen Yubai slowly placed her hand on top.
In an instant, Xi Jiang flipped her wrist, her fingers sliding between Shen Yubai’s, interlocking their hands tightly.
Shen Yubai was stunned. Following the gentle tug, she was pulled to within inches of the other woman.
Xi Jiang’s “peach blossom” eyes blinked like crescent moons, filled with a burning warmth. At such a close distance, Shen Yubai realized for the first time that when she smiled, there was a tiny, almost imperceptible dimple near the corner of her mouth.
“Little sister.”
Her gaze moved from the mouth to Shen Yubai’s eyes. Xi Jiang’s smile widened, and she gave their joined hands a gentle shake, radiating a soft, pure joy. “Use this hand to twist open a drink that has a ‘Win Another Bottle’ promotion, and you’ll see.”
“I’m going.” She released her hand, waved, and walked away toward her home with effortless poise.
The auspicious clouds flew beside her.
“You’re just leaving? Such a good opportunity.”
“She really gave up.”
“Hahaha, when did you start handling Building 14’s packages?”
“You have to maintain the right sense of distance.”
Xi Jiang tapped the umbrella on the ground in a rhythmic beat as she walked. She narrowed her eyes. “I just need to mention it to Sister Yun tomorrow morning.”
Standing before the dormitory, Shen Yubai looked down at her hand. After a long moment, she bit her lip, turned around, and headed toward the convenience store.
