Chapter 4: Drawing Cards
Her expression appeared to be nothing more than a sincere compliment, or perhaps just a casual conversation starter, but Shen Yubai nonetheless became involuntarily tense. No one had ever proactively brought up the topic of wanting to be her friend before.
The hands tucked in her pockets tightened slightly. She reached the corner leading to the sports field and turned, saying quite unnaturally, “We aren’t going the same way.”
The voice followed closely behind. Xi Jiang placed both hands behind her back and lowered her head to smile at her. “We are going the same way; I’m going to the sports field for a walk.”
“Or…” Her speaking speed slowed down a bit, long lashes veiling her eyes as an aura of self-deprecation emanated from her. “Are you looking down on me because I’m just a delivery person…?”
Shen Yubai glanced at her. Suddenly, her throat felt a bit itchy. She didn’t know how to deal with this kind of person and simply rejected her out of instinct: “It has nothing to do with your profession. It’s just that I’m not used to having friends.”
Not used to it, huh…
Xi Jiang nodded, still wearing that comfortable smile.
The two had only walked a few quiet steps when a white trash bag rolled out from ahead. Lit by the streetlamps on both sides and carried by a shallow breeze, it rolled toward them.
It had likely wrapped some oily items, as Shen Yubai could clearly see many grease stains on it. She subconsciously tried to dodge the trash bag’s path, but the bag changed its trajectory to follow her.
She frowned. Just as the trash bag was about to lunge onto her and she prepared to jump away, a white shoe appeared before her eyes.
Xi Jiang had very long legs. Wearing light-colored straight-leg pants, she performed a high kick. Shen Yubai only saw a blur of a shadow before the trash bag was pinned under her foot.
Despite the bag being covered in grease, not a speck touched her white shoes.
Both stopped. Xi Jiang noticed Shen Yubai staring at her shoes, so she pulled a pack of tissues from her pocket, used a tissue to pick up the plastic bag, and threw it into a roadside bin. She said casually, “I’ve had very good luck since I was a child. In fact, people who get close to or touch me also start having better luck.”
These words were quite piercing and felt somewhat like unprovoked narcissism. Shen Yubai only gave a faint reply: “Mhm.”
Then, without looking at her, she quickened her pace.
Xi Jiang continued to follow unhurriedly at the back, a light smile surfacing on her lips as she murmured to herself, “Quite cute, isn’t she?”
The auspicious clouds followed her, drifting left and right.
“Yes, yes, yes, super cute.”
“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, hahaha.”
“Your progress is too slow; the livestream next door has already arranged an infant betrothal.”
After one more corner, they reached the sports field. Although it was dark, many small lit-up tents were set up on the field. It was bustling with people; many brightly dressed youths were laughing and chatting, the air filled everywhere with the breath of youth.
At the entrance of the field, groups of students were coming and going. Shen Yubai stood at the entrance and made a phone call. Xi Jiang walked up to her, smiled and waved, then stepped onto the track herself, looking as if she really had come just for a walk.
Shen Yubai watched her slender silhouette, her thoughts drifting, until Qi Yunli’s voice came through the phone.
“You’re here, right? Hey, I see you. Stay there, don’t move.”
Qi Yunli felt a headache over her fixed way of dressing. Though she was beautiful, on this Club Night, everyone else was dressing up as much as possible to make friends and have fun.
The two families were neighbors. Shen Yubai had been very obedient and well-behaved as a child; her only issue was being somewhat withdrawn due to her bad luck. Seeing her becoming more and more isolated, Qi Yunli was worried and wanted to help her connect with people her age, at least to ease her situation.
As soon as they met, he smiled and led her toward the Arts Department area, teasing, “You came after all.”
“Otherwise, I’d wait for you to expose me?” Shen Yubai was quite dissatisfied with his habit of “tattling” to her family, but she didn’t take it to heart, knowing he did it for her own good.
“Don’t worry, it’s just our department people playing some games together. Many underclassmen have only heard your name and admire you greatly; they want to be friends with you~”
Ranking first in the grade for three consecutive years without ever falling from the pedestal, yet never participating in any activities—how could people not be curious? Especially since Qi Yunli knew how difficult it was for her to get those rankings. During exams, either her pen would run out of ink or her pencil lead would snap; once, her exam desk even collapsed entirely, causing a huge stir in the school.
Hearing his words, Shen Yubai suddenly remembered Xi Jiang, who wanted to be her friend. The surroundings were noisy and she wasn’t used to this environment. Qi Yunli kept introducing the Arts Department to her, but she didn’t hear him clearly.
Suddenly, a moderate explosion sounded. Qi Yunli’s words stopped, and Shen Yubai turned back in a daze.
It turned out two students carrying water balloons had passed by them, and a balloon had somehow exploded. Quite a bit of water splashed onto Shen Yubai. The student apologized profusely. Once Shen Yubai regained her senses, she calmly said it was fine, took off her wet trench coat, and continued forward.
Qi Yunli caught up and rubbed his short hair. “I suddenly regret asking you to come out.”
“Good that you know,” Shen Yubai replied. She saw him naturally take the wet coat from her hands, then strip off his own jacket and toss it to her.
The night breeze was indeed a bit chilly, and Shen Yubai accepted it with a clear conscience; the two of them were like family, having grown up together like this.
The auspicious clouds constantly shuttled through the crowd on the track. Following Xi Jiang’s gaze toward that direction, text popped out one after another.
“It’s over, hahaha, dead before the battle even began.”
“Don’t worry, Little Xi, there’s still a chance.”
“She’s even wearing his jacket now; how tragic.”
“Why are you wearing a sweater today!”
Xi Jiang’s eyes flickered in the darkness. Her long lashes blinked, and she suddenly turned to walk out of the sports field.
“Where are you going? Giving up?”
“I’m going to buy an umbrella.”
She answered softly, letting her long hair down. The smooth hair brushed past her cheeks, complementing those phoenix eyes of indeterminate depth. She wore a relaxed, light smile.
Watching Qi Yunli and Shen Yubai approach, Qin Yue nervously tugged on Xu Lingling’s sleeve beside her. “What should I do?”
She had harbored a secret crush on Shen Yubai for a long time and prepared to confess tonight, or at least start as friends. Though she knew Qi Yunli had a good relationship with her, in this situation, anyone would see them as a perfect match of a handsome man and a beautiful woman. Her heart was inevitably anxious.
Many students from surrounding departments watched with smiles, some even starting to tease.
“It’s my first time seeing Senior Shen up close. She’s so beautiful and outstanding.”
“She and Senior Qi match so well~ I heard they’re childhood sweethearts~”
Xu Lingling leaned toward her ear and comforted her softly, “Don’t worry. Their relationship is common knowledge; after three years with no news, it’s clear they aren’t interested in each other. Just go ahead and confess boldly. Only the brave have hope.”
She looked at the approaching Shen Yubai, her heart filled with a bit of resentment. She knew Shen Yubai was hard to approach. In her sophomore year, not understanding Shen Yubai and thinking she was like any other freshman, she had used her connection with Qi Yunli to secretly confess, only to be harshly rebuffed.
What is she? Just someone with slightly better grades, looks, and family background.
Xu Lingling gave Qin Yue an encouraging smile. She wanted to see if, after two years of being a loner, Shen Yubai would still be so arrogant when confessed to by a girl in front of everyone.
“Come, come, let me introduce everyone: this is Shen Yubai.”
“Is there anyone who doesn’t know her? Hahaha.”
“Hello, Senior Shen! I’m a freshman. You’re so beautiful~”
As soon as Qi Yunli brought Shen Yubai to the small tent for introductions, a large group of people crowded around enthusiastically.
Shen Yubai inconspicuously took a step back, nodded to the underclassman, and pursed her lips. “Thank you.”
The girl beamed. Qi Yunli waved his hand. “What are you all crowding here for? Go back to your own business~”
“Yes, yes, the Department Head is the best!”
A boy standing on a chair behind them cheered. Everyone around laughed and resumed their unfinished tasks. The atmosphere was great.
Once the crowd dispersed and only a few close friends remained, Qi Yunli suggested playing a game. As they walked to the table, Xu Lingling pulled Qin Yue over.
Blushing and stuttering, Qin Yue introduced herself to Shen Yubai: “Hello, my name is Qin Yue. I’m in the same class as you, and I live two doors down from your room~”
Seeing Shen Yubai nod, her face turned even redder.
Qi Yunli took out a deck of cards, pulled out the Jokers and a few other cards, and invited them with a smile: “Let’s draw cards. Whoever draws the Small Joker must do one thing for the one who draws the Big Joker.”
He glanced at Shen Yubai, gave a look to the people gathered around the table, and the cheering followed.
“Play! Let’s play!”
“Hahaha, Tan-zi, I’m going to make you wash my socks for a month.”
“Sounds fun, hahaha.”
Xu Lingling returned Qi Yunli’s look, smiling brilliantly.
The two of them had agreed that if he drew the Big Joker, he would make Shen Yubai join the hosting team. Her luck was usually great, but Xu Lingling didn’t know how he planned to make Shen Yubai draw the Small Joker. Regardless, they would play several rounds, and she would secretly swap the card to Qin Yue so she could confess.
Qi Yunli knew Shen Yubai had liked hosting since she was little and wanted to give her a push. Although they were already juniors, it would be great if she could take the stage once and step out from the shadow of her “bad luck.”
So what if you’re unlucky? It won’t kill you.
He began to shuffle the cards, confident that Shen Yubai would draw the Small Joker; he had already coordinated with many friends.
With a wooden face, Shen Yubai pulled her trench coat back into her own hands, though she didn’t storm off.
Qi Yunli symbolically let two people draw first, then brought the cards to her.
Looking at her old friend, Shen Yubai was a bit frustrated. She resignedly drew a card and flipped it over with a heart devoid of ripples, only to be stunned when she saw it wasn’t the Small Joker.
Qi Yunli was somewhat surprised and quickly urged them to play the next round.
“Go find a random girl on the field and confess.”
“Wash my socks for a month, hahaha.”
After several rounds, Shen Yubai became more and more confused. She hadn’t drawn a single Small Joker; she even drew a Big Joker once and gave a casual requirement. She stared blankly at the hand she used to draw.
This hand, just now…
Xi Jiang’s voice suddenly surfaced in her mind.
“I’ve had very good luck since I was a child. In fact, people who get close to or touch me also start having better luck.”
This hand had supported her buttocks.
Shen Yubai felt heat rising from behind her ears—an nameless emotion surged, perhaps the shock and madness of discovering that her fate might have a turning point.
Separated from her by one person, Qin Yue was extremely anxious, constantly tugging on Xu Lingling’s sleeve. Xu Lingling was also filled with agitation.
Why hasn’t she drawn a Big Joker this time? She even drew a Small Joker.
Suddenly, a crack of thunder flashed across the sky. Dark clouds covered the already sparse moonlight.
Shen Yubai took the chance to say goodbye: “I’ll be heading back first.”
Seeing her leave, Xu Lingling gave Qin Yue a push, her eyes urging her on with encouragement.
“If you don’t go now, I don’t know when you’ll get another chance.”
Qin Yue bit her lip and rushed forward.
As soon as Shen Yubai turned around, she felt herself being pulled. She turned back to see a slightly unfamiliar face. The girl lowered her head, her hand resting directly on Qi Yunli’s jacket as she grabbed Shen Yubai’s wrist.
“I like you! Can we try being together?”
The moment those shocking words were spoken, thin raindrops landed on the tip of her nose. The gasps and surprise inside the tent, combined with a startling crack of thunder, were irritating.
Judging from this sudden rain, sure enough, she was still unlucky to the core.
Shen Yubai frowned, wanting to pull her hand back, but she couldn’t budge it. The girl across from her looked up at her expectantly, and the raindrops gradually grew larger.
Irritated and uneasy, with rain hitting her face, the sounds of teasing came from the small tent.
“Senior, consider it~”
“Even being friends is fine~”
She bit her lip, wanting to shake the hand off, when a shadow suddenly covered her head, shielding her from the wind and rain.
It was a small, bright red umbrella. A young woman, half a head taller than her, looked down slightly. Her gaze crashed directly into Shen Yubai’s eyes—it was brilliant and dazzling. A soul-soothing smile hung on the corners of her mouth.
