Chapter 3: I Don’t Know You
The stairs in the dormitory building were brightly lit. Wearing a beige thin sweater with her hair simply tied up, Xi Jiang climbed the stairs with an air of ease, looking as if she lived in the building herself.
Room 1420 was on the fourth floor. Xi Jiang knew this entire floor consisted of single rooms. She found the corresponding door number, stood at the entrance, and copied Shen Yubai’s phone number. Searching for the number on WeChat, she typed into the friend request note: Hello, I’ve delivered your package to your door, and submitted the application.
“You’re so smooth~ Hahaha, using the chance to add her on WeChat.”
“It’s late at night; this feels a bit like a scammer.”
“Immortal Friend No. 44 has gifted you a rainstorm.”
“I’ve worked overtime for so long to finally finish this. Luo Fengming, next time you come to the Immortal Realm, please don’t hit me again…”
“Tha—” Xi Jiang’s gaze shifted upward to the auspicious clouds. Before the last syllable of “Thank you” could leave her lips, the door in front of her suddenly opened.
Shen Yubai was wearing a white shirt. It seemed she had just finished blow-drying her hair; the waves were small and fluffy, flaring outward with a slight brownish tint that made her face look even more exquisite and small.
Their gazes met. Indifferently, Shen Yubai shifted her eyes to the package in Xi Jiang’s hands.
Xi Jiang curled the corners of her mouth and handed over the package. Shen Yubai reached out to take it, not paying much mind to why a delivery was being made so late. She simply asked in passing, “Is there only one?”
“Mhm.” Her shirt sleeves were rolled up a bit, revealing slender wrists. Xi Jiang looked away and nodded gently at her. “The others are probably still at the transfer station; they should be delivered tomorrow.”
“Okay, thank you.” Shen Yubai tried to pull the package inside, but despite applying pressure, she couldn’t tug it away. She looked up in confusion, meeting the other woman’s seemingly hesitant gaze.
“Um,” Xi Jiang paused before speaking. “Some people aren’t worth your affection.”
“You must be mistaken. I’ve never liked anyone.”
The moment she heard those words, a mixture of joy and sorrow surfaced in Xi Jiang’s heart.
Shen Yubai felt she was being a bit nonsensical, yet she found herself answering unconsciously. She felt a strange sense of approachability from this woman. Gripping the doorknob, she asked one last question before entering: “Do you know me?”
“You’re quite famous at school.” Xi Jiang handed her the note from her trouser pocket, her voice carrying a sense of resolve. “I like A University very much; I want to take the self-study exams.”
She paused, then smiled broadly. “I really admire you, little sister~”
Shen Yubai’s movement to close the door hitched. She suddenly found herself looking into those shimmering eyes, which seemed to sparkle with a light of determination and idolization. She was momentarily dazed. Frowning slightly, her gaze dropped to see the extended hand holding a slip of paper.
“I found this inside the mints you gave me,” Xi Jiang explained smoothly.
Shen Yubai had almost forgotten. In her past life, she indeed found a note inside the mint box, but she hadn’t gone.
Shen Yubai attributed all these changes to her own rebirth. She no longer studied in the library because she feared bookshelves falling on her; instead, she went to the teaching buildings or simply huddled at home.
Having decided not to go this time either, she looked up as if it were a trivial matter. “It’s nothing. You can just throw it away.”
With that, she closed the door decisively.
The door was shut tight. The auspicious clouds continued to float by.
“A-ya-ya, didn’t get the WeChat and got the cold shoulder instead, hahaha.”
“So pitiful, she hasn’t even introduced her name yet.”
“Go home and sleep. I’ve read the script written by Immortal Ming Liu for this world; she won’t go to the sports field.”
“Oho! You’re peeking again.”
Xi Jiang calmly threw the note into a nearby trash can. However, as she looked up, her gaze accidentally met that of a girl standing two doors down. She gave a gentle smile and walked toward the stairs with a leisurely pace.
She had noticed this girl back when she was talking about the mints. The girl had been standing at her door eavesdropping on their conversation the moment they stepped out.
Seeing Xi Jiang go downstairs, the girl’s eyes darted around. She walked to the trash can, hesitated, and ultimately picked up the note. After seeing the words on it clearly, she hurried toward the stairs.
Xi Jiang stood under a tree near the dormitory entrance, her figure concealed by the night. Seeing the glowing text in the livestream urging her to go home, she chuckled softly and comforted them: “Don’t worry, there’s still a turning point.”
A walk to the sports field—how romantic.
In less than five seconds, the girl from before walked down, her phone pressed to her ear. Her voice wasn’t loud, but it was exceptionally clear in this quiet spot.
“Lingling, Qi Yunli is an idiot, isn’t he? Writing a note. She didn’t even see it. What do we do now?”
It was unclear what the other person said, but the girl broke into a grin and hurriedly replied, “Okay, I’m coming over now.”
Then, she almost ran off.
The moonlight tonight was sparse, with most of the moon hidden behind the clouds.
A gray cat leaped out of the first-floor dormitory manager’s window. Its fur was a pure color. It stepped elegantly onto the fallen leaves beneath the tree, and just as it was about to stretch, a pair of feet suddenly appeared before it, scaring it so much its fur stood on end.
Xi Jiang squatted down and smiled at it. She tilted her chin slightly and glanced at the high tree trunk.
Go on, climb up.
The gray cat backed away a few steps, its tail drooping. Its paw pads seemed glued to the ground, and it shivered slightly.
Xi Jiang reached out to pet its head, the corners of her mouth curling up as she praised it, “Good kitty.”
The auspicious clouds exploded with colorful fireworks and a stream of flattery.
“Little Xi is so gentle, boohoo. Luo Fengming, don’t come back.”
“This immortal will definitely help you win the beauty’s heart!”
“Look at that kitty, it likes you so much.”
“Oh my, it actually scrambled up the tree.”
“Little Xi, be careful.”
“Wuwuwu, she’s actually helping the kitty. I’m so touched.”
Shen Yubai walked down the stairs moodily, her lips pressed tight. Qi Yunli had grown up with her, yet he was always dedicated to finding “good friends” for her. He was even forcing her to go to the sports field when she didn’t want to.
“You’re not going, right? Didn’t you lie to Aunt Wu and the others that you’ve made good friends just to put them at ease? I’ll tell them right now that you’ve been a loner for three years of college and that your depression is about to relapse.”
“It’s Club Night these few days—so lively! Such a good opportunity!”
I’m so unlucky, how am I supposed to make friends?
Shen Yubai tucked her hands into her trench coat pockets. Just as she reached the dormitory entrance, she was startled by a sudden voice.
“Little sister, can you help me with something?”
The voice carried a slight, breathless tremor; though soft, it was exceptionally alluring. Shen Yubai’s heart skipped a beat. She was the only one around; the call was clearly for her.
She looked toward the sound and saw a figure amidst the vague branches. The figure was hugging the tree trunk. The nearby lamplight and moonlight scattered over her. Shen Yubai walked a bit closer and recognized her as the delivery worker who had been at her door. What a coincidence; she had seen her three times today.
“Meow~ Meow~” A few cat cries pulled her thoughts back. Walking under the tree, she realized the girl was holding a cat in her arms. The cat’s color almost blended into the night.
So, she had climbed the tree to save a cat. A scene instantly appeared in Shen Yubai’s mind: a mischievous cat leaping onto a branch but being unable to get down, so a kind young woman climbed up to rescue it.
A person so kind it’s almost weird—like a ‘White Lotus’ character in a TV drama.
Xi Jiang saw the girl standing coldly beneath the tree without speaking. She couldn’t help but speak up: “Little sister, can you catch the kitty for me?”
“I’ve run out of strength~” Xi Jiang looked at her, the corners of her eyes drooping. She held the cat with one hand and the tree with the other. She was still a distance from the ground, making it extremely inconvenient to get down. The cat in her arms let out a soft, trembling cry in cooperation, making it impossible not to feel softened.
But Shen Yubai took a step back, refusing bluntly: “I hate furry animals.”
In truth, she just had a bit of a cleanliness obsession and feared shedding hair. Seeing the light suddenly vanish from the eyes of the girl clinging to the tree, she felt a sudden loss for words.
Those words were clearly directed at the cat, but for some reason, Xi Jiang felt an immense sense of loss, as if a memory sealed deep in her heart had been pricked.
The colors of the text in the auspicious clouds were glaringly intense.
“Hahaha, think about your true form. Go back and shave your fur off, Luo Fengming.”
“Forgive me for my unkind laughter.”
Xi Jiang’s grip slowly loosened. She carefully used her feet to brace herself as she slid down the trunk. Her movements were a bit awkward, and just as she neared the ground, she slipped. It looked like she was about to fall.
A force supported her buttocks. In that instant, she bit her lower lip, her fingers clawing into the bark. Only then did she suppress the panic in her heart and stabilize herself.
Looking down, she saw Shen Yubai with a wooden expression, her hand raised to support her.
A night breeze brushed past. Xi Jiang smiled at her, her eyes bright and brilliant. Her voice was incredibly soft.
“Thank you…”
Following her strength, she stepped onto the ground. The gray cat’s vertical pupils brightened, and it scrambled out of her arms, its figure instantly vanishing into the darkness.
Xi Jiang patted herself off. Just as she was about to say a few more words, she saw Shen Yubai ignore her entirely and walk out from under the tree. Her steps were very fast, her wavy hair swaying behind her as if a ghost were chasing her.
After walking some distance, Shen Yubai bit her lip and looked at her hand. That elastic sensation seemed still palpable. She felt she was losing it. She clenched her fist and used her hair to cover her burning ears. Just as she slowed her pace, she noticed a person appear beside her.
“You walk so fast.” Xi Jiang walked side-by-side with her and asked with a smile, “Where are you going?”
“The sports field.” Shen Yubai felt she was being too familiar. With great detachment, she added, “I don’t know you.”
The moment she spoke, the auspicious clouds floated over her head, and text of various colors popped out.
“Sports Field”
“How did the plot collapse? Who changed it?”
“If Xiao Bai doesn’t go, the female lead in Immortal Ming Liu’s script would cry and go find the male lead because she had a fight with her supporting-character friend!”
“Hahaha, don’t tell me the female lead is Little Xi’s ex-girlfriend.”
“You guessed right.”
“Our Little Xi is the Child of Heaven, okay! It’s better that Ming Liu’s melodramatic plot is ruined; it was an eyesore.”
Xi Jiang looked straight ahead. The nearby streetlamp lit up the road brightly, and their shadows stretched out. She inconspicuously moved her hand a bit closer until their shadows seemed to overlap. A faint smile appeared as she looked at the seemingly endless road. Her mood was exceptionally good. “My name is Xi Jiang. Xi as in ‘neglect,’ Jiang as in ‘river’.”
The name sounded familiar. Shen Yubai’s brows knit slightly as she looked at the person beside her. Her profile was softened by the streetlamp—a perky nose and lips that naturally seemed to smile, giving off a very gentle feeling.
The moment she looked at her, Xi Jiang turned her head and instantly captured her gaze. Her smile widened, but she maintained the air of a caring older sister as she said, “Little sister, you’re so pretty. Can we be friends?”
