Chapter 10: Applying the Medicine
“Do you find my back too unsightly to touch…?”
Xi Jiang rested her chin on her hands and tilted her head slightly to look at her. This movement caused her upper body to arch, and her short-sleeved shirt had already been pulled up to her shoulders. The two thin shoulder blades were clearly visible beneath her skin, their lines smooth and moving—especially since they were tattooed with large patches of small white flowers.
Up close, they were just five or six umbel-shaped Manjusaka (White Lycoris). The petals were recurved like dragon claws, and the stems were long and scaly. The leaves grew in clusters, and their pale green hue almost masked the white petals, making the design look somewhat chaotic. When Xi Jiang moved, the flowers seemed to come alive along the curves of her bones. The snow-white petals shimmered under the faint, warm overhead light, evoking an endless desire to touch them.
Shen Yubai was mesmerized by this sight, left speechless. Then, Xi Jiang lowered her head, her soft hair brushing past her cheek as she spoke to herself in a gentle, pitiable tone: “Otherwise, why would your face be so flushed, little sister?”
As if her secret thoughts had been pierced, Shen Yubai’s entire body felt like it was steaming. She felt she must look ridiculous right now. Her throat bobbed as she swallowed twice, forcing her gaze back to her own hand which was gripping Xi Jiang’s shirt, offering a stiff explanation:
“Your back is very beautiful. It’s just that the bed is too small and it’s a bit hot.”
Xi Jiang watched her staring only at her own hand. Taking advantage of the fact that Shen Yubai couldn’t see her face, she wore a shallow smile, though the light in her eyes became increasingly brazen: “Is that so? I’m glad you like it, little sister~”
“Lie still. Your clothes keep sliding down, and I can’t apply the medicine.” Shen Yubai tightened her grip on the fabric, pursing her lips in an attempt to act serious. She tried desperately to hide her panic. Sensing that Xi Jiang wasn’t moving, she tilted her head slightly to look at her again.
Xi Jiang took her time retracting her gaze. When Shen Yubai turned her head, she saw Xi Jiang’s back arch into a curve; her left elbow propped up the bed as she deftly slipped her right sleeve off.
The shirt was now bunched up around her neck, unable to slide down further. She finally lay flat, her hands on the pillow as she turned to smile: “Alright, your turn.”
Shen Yubai hurriedly looked away, frantically picking up the medicinal oil that had somehow slipped onto the sheets. But the fragmented light in Xi Jiang’s eyes and that smile full of encouragement and kindness lingered in her mind.
She shook her head to dispel the strange feeling. Thinking that she must not betray Xi Jiang’s trust, she summoned her courage and moved her gaze back to the girl’s back.
The girl lay quietly on the pillow. Some of her jet-black, smooth hair fell across her porcelain back. Perhaps due to the shadows, the Manjusaka clinging to her shoulder blades appeared slightly dark and eerie, as if they were clawing to swallow the fist-sized dark bruise on the right side.
She was very thin, her back creating a subtle hollow, but her figure was excellent—especially the fullness that, flattened by gravity, was faintly visible beneath the fabric.
Shen Yubai closed her eyes and took a deep breath. It’s okay, everyone has them. Besides, Auntie Xiaowu used to rub medicine for Mom; this is a symbol of a good relationship.
She poured the medicinal oil into her palm, her face tense. But because she poured too much, the oil began to seep through her fingers.
Having never done such a task, Shen Yubai panicked and slapped her palm directly onto the bruise on Xi Jiang’s back.
Her hand was very cold. The shock of the ice-and-fire sensation sent a jolt through Xi Jiang’s body. She couldn’t help but let out a low whimper, her toes curling involuntarily.
Shen Yubai kept her hand on her back, at a total loss.
Xi Jiang gently bit the side of her finger, catching her breath. However, excitement inadvertently leaked from her eyes. Her voice carried an emotional rasp: “It’s okay, little sister. I can bear it.”
Shen Yubai was bewitched by that low, soft timbre, feeling weak all over. Nonetheless, she applied pressure and focused intently on rubbing the medicinal oil into the skin.
She’s in so much pain yet she’s enduring it; I have to help her.
Carrying this thought, Shen Yubai tried to keep her movements light, using only her wrist strength. After each circle, she asked: “Is the pressure okay?”
“It’s not too heavy, it feels very comfortable~” Xi Jiang’s voice was masked with a dark undertone. Even though she said that, every time Shen Yubai completed a circle, she bit her finger and gasped from the pain.
That faint, suppressed sound entered Shen Yubai’s ears like a siren’s song—soft, lingering, and sweet. it made half of her body go numb and scattered her concentration.
The white Manjusaka petals appearing before her eyes looked soft and vivid, gradually occupying her entire field of vision.
Unconsciously, her fingers began to climb toward that patch of white.
Slowly, the pressure centered on her back seemed to drift off course. It felt very light, almost ticklish.
Xi Jiang’s finger coiled around a strand of hair that had fallen onto the pillow. She chuckled softly, her voice as lingering as a steady drizzle.
She stopped and asked: “Do you like it? If you like it, I can draw a flower for you.”
“I like it.” Shen Yubai didn’t realize her lips were curved upward; her fingers were tracing the lines of the bone, unable to put them down.
“Then, which part do you like?” the decadent voice asked again, luring out an answer.
“I like all of it.”
The moment those words left her mouth, Shen Yubai snapped awake. Her hand sprang away as if it had been burned. Then, Xi Jiang’s soft, muffled laughter from the pillow drifted into her ears, making her heart itch and her pulse quicken involuntarily.
She felt it must be because she had held one position for too long; her head was swimming, and even her legs had gone numb from kneeling. She shook her head, wanting to change positions, but when her gaze dropped, she saw the white petals on Xi Jiang’s back suddenly turn red. To her eyes, it looked as if she had suddenly dropped a bead of blood from her nose.
I’ve truly lost my mind.
She looked up at the light, but the shadows seemed to flicker, and her vision blurred. Feeling a bit embarrassed, she could only frown and ask Xi Jiang: “Xi Jiang, can you check for me… is my face bleeding?”
The aching numbness in her legs made it unbearable, so she slumped to her side, wanting to stretch her legs out.
Xi Jiang turned her head. The corners of her eyes were flushed red, and her eyes were shimmering like ripples on water. Most notably, there were bite marks on her lips—she looked exactly like someone who had been ravaged.
Recalling what she had just been doing, Shen Yubai’s face turned beet red. She rolled over and buried her face in the sheets, not daring to look at her again.
Xi Jiang silently curled her lips. She hooked her toes into the blanket and pulled it up to cover Shen Yubai, then deftly put her clothes back on.
She brushed the curls away from Shen Yubai’s face, revealing a clean profile, and whispered in her ear: “Do you still want me to check?”
Reasonably, a drop of blood like that was likely a nosebleed, but now that Shen Yubai’s head was down, there was nothing on the sheets. Shen Yubai slowly turned her face back, her eyes downcast, still not daring to look.
Xi Jiang lay beside her, pinching her chin with two fingers to draw her head closer, narrowing her eyes to examine her from left to right.
Her hot breath brushed against Shen Yubai’s cheek. Shen Yubai felt the surrounding air grow hot. She couldn’t help but look up and ask: “Is there?”
Xi Jiang’s expression was very serious, which unconsciously made Shen Yubai’s heart tighten. Her rough thumb pressed against Shen Yubai’s lower lip, rubbing it gently, her eyes full of solemnity.
Just as Shen Yubai was about to speak again, Xi Jiang pressed down on her lip line and suddenly laughed, her eyes crinkling: “There’s nothing wrong with your mouth either. I guess you were kneeling too long and had a hallucination.”
Shen Yubai stared at her blankly. Xi Jiang gently rubbed her hair, reached across her to turn off the light inside the bed curtains, her voice still a bit raspy: “Thank you for the hard work applying the medicine, little sister. Get some rest early~”
The moment the light went out, even the faint starlight from outside was blocked by the curtains. Shen Yubai’s body instantly went stiff. It had been a very long time since she had fallen asleep in a dark environment.
Xi Jiang sensed her change and moved closer to her, her body heat transferring continuously. She deliberately tried to distract her by asking with a hint of hope: “Little sister, are we friends now?”
Shen Yubai looked toward the source of the warmth, feeling a sense of emotion. Xi Jiang was too humble; she was clearly such an excellent and worthy person.
Nodding, Shen Yubai’s voice was full of sincerity: “Even though I don’t know you well enough yet, right now, you are my best friend.”
“The ‘zero-distance’ kind?” Xi Jiang’s voice dropped lower, the end of her sentence tilting up with joy. Shen Yubai could feel her unignorable breath brushing against her cheek, mixed with a comfortable, light fragrance. Without thinking much, she nodded and, for the first time, couldn’t help but chuckle: “Mhm.”
In this silent, dark night, one’s five senses were particularly sharp.
Something soft touched her cheek, followed by the softness of a chest. Through two layers of clothing, Shen Yubai felt her heart was about to leap out of her chest.
Xi Jiang put her arm around her waist, slowly lifting her head to press against her cheek. The hand underneath also accurately caught Shen Yubai’s hand, locking their fingers together.
Her face gently rubbed against the other’s, intimate and tender: “If you’re scared, little sister, you can hold me tight. With two people, there’s nothing to be afraid of…”
In that moment, Shen Yubai suddenly felt that her life was worth it. A searing warmth filled her heart—a passionate emotion she had never experienced before.
She moved her body, her leg sliding between Xi Jiang’s, bringing their distance even closer.
“Goodnight, little sister.”
“Goodnight.”
No sound came from inside the curtains for a long time. Only then did the auspicious clouds shrink and slip inside. Upon entering this narrow space, the glowing camera lens captured Xi Jiang’s almost manic gaze.
Filled with an endless predatory intent, she was staring unblinkingly at the girl sleeping with shallow breaths in her arms, as if she wanted to crush her and melt her into her own heart.
The lively atmosphere within the clouds couldn’t disturb her, until a piercing beam of light shot directly into her eyes.
Xi Jiang frowned and turned toward the source of the light. It was a sharp, peerless spiritual sword that flashed within the clouds for only a second, followed by a line of grey text.
“Luo Fengming, you’ve wandered into another main plot. Go back!”
“Heavens, Ming Liu is here.”
“I seem to remember the fear of being dominated when the two of them fought in the Immortal Realm for seven days and nights long ago.”
“I think it was over a disagreement regarding good, evil, life, and death.”
Xi Jiang pursed her lips and looked on coldly, as if it didn’t concern her at all. The clouds went blank for a moment, then another line of grey text appeared.
“If you still want to return, hurry up and catch the resentful soul. Don’t interfere with my work.”
She wanted to catch it, but she couldn’t find it.
Besides, why should Shen Yubai have to endure the tragic life of a so-called “female supporting character”?
The person beside her looked clean and obedient in her sleep, a few stray hairs covering her face, softening Xi Jiang’s heart.
Xi Jiang gently tucked the hair behind the girl’s ear, leaned in to steal a kiss on her forehead, and then pulled the blanket over both their heads, a silent refusal to answer.
Looking at the screen, Ming Liu flicked her wide sleeve. The bamboo scroll in her hand fell with a crisp sound. Very well. Even in reincarnation, she still has that arrogant, insufferable temper of Luo Fengming.
A minor immortal responsible for organizing books shrunk their head and ran to the other side to watch the livestream.
“Eye-searing. Just you wait.”
Ming Liu sent another line of text. the clouds were blank for a moment before becoming lively again.
“Hahaha, Little Xi, your “wife” is in danger.”
“Don’t be afraid, this is just the impotent rage of a single dog.”

The Immortal Realm has regulations: no Immortal can privately enter a mortal world to interfere with its normal operation. Thus, Ming Liu could only work hard on the plot. Holding her pen, she wore a sinister smile.
Xi Jiang slept very soundly that night.
But Shen Yubai was the exact opposite. She felt as if something wet was rubbing against her skin, like a puppy licking her desperately with its tongue.
She extremely disliked animals that shed hair!
In the darkness, her eyes snapped open. Shen Yubai’s breathing was ragged; she realized the blanket had been over her head—no wonder she had a nightmare.
She lifted the blanket slightly, feeling much better once she breathed the fresh, cool air. She turned her head; because it was too dark, a sense of unease returned. She shifted closer to Xi Jiang. By the moonlight, she saw that the other seemed to be in a deep sleep, their shallow breaths faintly intertwining.
She had some lingering trauma and kept thinking she heard rats squeaking. Unable to help herself, she buried her head in Xi Jiang’s chest. Feeling the radiant warmth, she finally let out a sigh of relief and closed her eyes.
In the sparse light, Xi Jiang’s long lashes trembled, and the corners of her mouth traced a very shallow curve.
