I Raise My Wife in a Supernatural Story (Infinite) - Chapter 2
Qi Yan was a homebody. Her major was fine arts, having studied painting since childhood. Specializing in traditional Chinese painting, she later ventured into creating comics on her own. Now in her senior year of college, she had been independently serializing her comics on a platform for three years, earning herself a modest reputation as an artist.
Her parents were free spirits, always off traveling and rarely checking in on her aside from sending her a monthly allowance. Her daily routine consisted of holing up in her dorm, drawing, and earning some extra pocket money.
As a true shut-in, aside from drawing, she spent the rest of her time immersed in the world of anime, manga, novels, and films. She had consumed countless works across a wide range of genres, so of course, she was familiar with those “infinite flow” novels.
And now, as luck would have it, she seemed to have landed in one herself.
According to the voice in her head that called itself the “Guide,” this was the world of a supernatural script. Instantly, she thought of the blank ancient book she had brought back from her hometown, a well-preserved old tome with a pitch-black cover and not a single word inside.
Rubbing her throbbing temples, Qi Yan recalled flipping through that book just before bed.
Was reading it the trigger that transported her into this scripted world? What about the others? Were they in the same boat?
In this minibus, there appeared to be six players in total. Aside from the gaunt, puppet-like driver, the woman who introduced herself as “Sister Hong,” the tour guide, was likely the NPC the “Guide” had mentioned, the one who would usher them in.
While massaging her head, Qi Yan discreetly observed the other five passengers. Her instincts told her they were all newcomers like her, each one visibly panicked and at a loss.
This was just her luck.
Right now, Qi Yan was filled with regret deep, overwhelming regret. Why had she been so careless as to flip through that damned Supernatural Script? Why had she even brought that cursed thing home? Why had she been so absent-minded as to check if she’d left anything behind in her old hometown?
If she hadn’t gone out of her way to do that. That house had been empty for years, why couldn’t she have just left that stupid book buried there forever?
This was just her luck.
For what felt like the hundredth time, she cursed her misfortune, wishing she could go back and chop off her own hand, That’ll teach you to be so reckless!
But chopping it off now would be pointless. Not only would it change nothing, losing a hand would only make things worse.
For the moment, Qi Yan resigned herself to her fate, forcing herself to stay calm. The first thing she needed to do was fully understand the situation at hand there were still too many unanswered questions and uncertainties.
Just maybe she clung to a sliver of hope maybe this was all just an incredibly vivid dream?
The minibus wound its way through the mountain roads for a long time before finally stopping in a clearing within the valley. A rusted bus stop sign stood alone by the roadside.
“We’re here. Get off.” It was the first time the driver had spoken, his voice rough and his tone wooden clearly not the voice of a normal person.
As the door opened, Sister Hong raised her megaphone again: “Please gather your belongings and exit the bus, everyone! We’ve arrived at our destination!”
The six of them remained frozen in their seats, craning their necks to peer out the windows, trying to make sense of what lay outside.
But outside was a vast expanse of white mist, making the situation even more eerie than before. There had been no fog along the way, and just before the bus stopped, the scenery outside the window had still been visible. Yet now, it suddenly felt as if they had been enveloped by a cloud that had fallen from the sky, bringing with it a suffocating sense of oppression.
Qi Yan gripped the armrest tightly, quickly analyzing the current situation.
No one on the bus moved. The bald man, who had been scared half to death earlier, was now huddled in his seat, not daring to budge. The already terrified high school girl seemed completely out of it, showing no signs of being able to react at all.
That left four people, including Qi Yan. Among them was a couple, the man had his arms around the woman, and the two clung to each other, their faces filled with panic. The last was a bespectacled, refined-looking man who appeared the calmest. He was also the only one brave enough to speak up under these circumstances.
“The fog is everywhere outside. Wouldn’t it be dangerous to get off here? Maybe, the bus could keep going a bit further? Weren’t we supposed to go to Baishui Town?”
Sister Hong smiled faintly and said slowly, “This is Baishui Town.” She pointed at the sign outside the window. “This stop is the entrance to Baishui Town. Get off here, walk through the fog, and you’ll reach the town.”
“Guide Hong, walking isn’t the issue, but how far does this fog stretch? Could there be unknown dangers inside? It doesn’t look like dawn has fully broken yet, we should be cautious. Since we have the bus, wouldn’t it be better to.”
The refined man clearly had years of experience as a corporate drone his words were measured, rational, and he knew how to strike the right tone and distance.
Too bad. In a normal crowd, his approach might have worked. But this place was clearly not normal society, and the people here were far from ordinary.
Sister Hong covered her lips and chuckled. “I don’t mind either way. Driving in would save me the walk. But, just because I don’t mind doesn’t mean others won’t~”
No sooner had she finished speaking than the bus driver, who had only uttered a single sentence earlier and had been manhandled like a puppet by the bald man suddenly turned his head to look at them. But it wasn’t a normal turn. His torso remained completely still, only his head rotating on his neck.
“Ah!”
The young couple screamed in terror first.
The completely unprepared sight sent the six newcomers into a panic. The refined man’s face turned deathly pale.
The driver’s head rotated a full 180 degrees on his neck, his gaze fixed unblinkingly on the six people in the bus. Slowly, he opened his mouth: “Get. Off.”
His voice wasn’t loud, but the sound sent chills down their spines as if his vocal cords had been torn apart and he was forcing the words out through sheer will. The grating noise made their skin crawl.
Among the newcomers, Qi Yan reacted the fastest. In an instant, she was on her feet and rushing to the bus door, even managing to politely say to the driver, “Thank you for your hard work!”
Though she thanked him, she didn’t dare look directly at him, and her speed getting off the bus could have rivaled Usain Bolt’s.
Sister Hong leaned against the door, watching her with a faint sneer before stepping off as well. “One minute. I’ll wait for you outside. We leave in one minute.”
Hearing her words, the other five people instantly panicked even more. The refined man glanced out the car window and saw Qi Yan, who had gotten off first, standing firmly on the ground with both feet. Sister Hong was right beside her, and everything seemed fine.
Ever since Sister Hong left, the minibus’s front windshield had suddenly turned into a countdown timer, starting from 59 seconds and ticking down, the sound growing louder and louder.
The refined man looked at the unfriendly expression on the driver’s face, clenched his teeth, and hurriedly got off the bus. His intuition told him that getting off was absolutely the right choice staying on this bus would definitely lead to trouble!
Seeing the refined man also disembark, the timid-looking female student quickly followed suit. Now, only the bald man and the young couple remained in the car. The couple glanced between the window, the countdown timer, and the driver. Unable to hold back, the young man stood up and pulled his girlfriend to leave.
“No! I can’t! I don’t dare to get off!”
Left with no choice, the young man wrapped his arms around his girlfriend and forcibly dragged her out of the bus.
This bus was too eerie staying any longer would surely lead to disaster!
The situation was clear now: getting off meant temporary survival, while staying likely meant death once the countdown ended. Though reckless, the bald man wasn’t stupid. Seeing everyone else had left, he quickly followed.
The minibus door slammed shut with a loud bang, startling Qi Yan. Out of the corner of her eye, she watched as the bus slowly drove away.
Sister Hong, seemingly conjuring a small red tour guide flag out of nowhere, held it up and said nonchalantly, “Alright, everyone’s off now. Let’s move forward.”
Her tone sounded almost disappointed that everyone had disembarked. Qi Yan felt a surge of relief that she had made the quick decision to get off. If she had stayed on that bus, she might have ended up as easy prey.
“There’s a foggy stretch ahead leading to the entrance of Baishui Town. From this bus stop to the town entrance, it’s a straight path. Just follow me.”
With that, Sister Hong strode forward. Her steps weren’t large, but her speed seemed incredibly fast. Not daring to delay, Qi Yan hurried after her.
After just a few steps, Qi Yan realized something was off. Sister Hong’s steps weren’t just small her pace seemed leisurely, yet Qi Yan found it extremely difficult to keep up. Soon, she had to break into a jog.
Sweat beaded on Qi Yan’s forehead from the strain. At first, she thought the problem was with her, but when she glanced back, she saw the other five people also struggling to keep up, resorting to jogging just like her.
The problem wasn’t her, it was Sister Hong!
Right now, Qi Yan couldn’t afford to think about anything else. She could only focus on Sister Hong’s retreating figure, sprinting through the endless white fog.
Fortunately, the fog seemed just as Sister Hong had described, a straight path, and not too long.
Before long, Qi Yan felt she had passed through the fog and caught sight of Baishui Town, their destination.
She stopped to catch her breath. While walking, she hadn’t noticed, but now that she had stopped, she realized how exhausted she was. Toward the end, she had practically been running.
Looking back at Sister Hong, she was still standing there lazily, sizing Qi Yan up with an amused smirk.
A shiver ran down Qi Yan’s spine. The way Sister Hong looked at her felt predatory, like she was eyeing prey.
Soon, the others caught up.
The refined man, the high school girl, and the young couple arrived, panting heavily.
Qi Yan frowned, staring into the white fog. Where was the bald man? Had he already met his end so quickly?
“Ha? ha! I’m exhausted, damn it! That woman, how can she walk so fast!?”
Soon, the bald man burst through the white mist, cursing under his breath as he ran.
Sister Hong eyed him with a look of utter disdain, as if he were garbage. “Tsk, so you all made it here alive.”
Her tone made no effort to hide her disappointment.
