I Just Want to be a Throwaway Character - Chapter 7
Chapter 7: The Best in the World
“Ji Wan, Ji Wan!! Ji Wan!!!”
The voice got louder with each shout. Lin Luo looked helplessly at Ji Wan, who was sleeping like a pig.
Bai Weiwei reached out and gently touched Ji Wan’s little head, threatening softly, “Wanwan, if you don’t get up soon, the limited-edition desserts at the restaurant will be gone.”
“Ooh, my dessert,” Ji Wan mumbled and quickly opened her eyes.
Her almond-shaped eyes, still foggy from sleep, looked around innocently like a lost fawn.
It was just the three of them left on the bus.
“Where are they?”
Ji Wan asked, rubbing her eyes. The mist hadn’t cleared from them, making her look very cute.
“Pig. They all got off and went to the hotel. Only you were still sleeping,” Lin Luo complained bluntly.
“Alright, let’s get off too. Stop teasing her.”
Bai Weiwei took Ji Wan’s hand and led her off the bus.
They walked toward the hotel, with Lin Luo, the “porter,” dragging their luggage behind them.
The hotel lobby was filled with hundreds of teachers and students from the aristocratic school.
They were being arranged into their rooms in an orderly manner.
“It’s such a pity. Why aren’t they being cheap at a time like this? All single rooms,” Ji Wan said indignantly, her little face puffed out like a pufferfish.
“It’s okay. You can come over to my room tonight to chat. Don’t be mad,” Bai Weiwei said, amused, pinching Ji Wan’s soft cheek.
Then, Ji Wan and Bai Weiwei were assigned rooms in the West Wing and East Wing, far apart from each other.
“Stupid hotel. They won’t even let us switch rooms.”
Ji Wan angrily went to the front desk to complain but was put off by the busy manager, who promised to help her later.
Fuming, she pulled her luggage to her room door, ready to swipe her card.
Just then, a door across the hall slowly opened with a click. Ji Wan instinctively turned to look.
Gu Nianqing’s cool, noble face gradually came into view.
Ji Wan: “…………….”
Ji Wan felt her luck was terrible and glared at Gu Nianqing.
The pouty girl furrowed her brows, her face full of unhappiness. Gu Nianqing thought it was a little cute and wanted to hug and pat her head.
Then, Ji Wan turned around and slammed her door shut.
Outside the door, a faint smile appeared on Gu Nianqing’s indifferent face.
Inside the hotel room, Ji Wan angrily threw herself onto the soft bed and fiercely punched the hotel pillow. “This broken hotel. This terrible hotel. Hmph.”
That same night, the room suddenly lost power and water, plunging it into darkness.
Ji Wan was…
The unluckiest person in the world, Ji Wan, was left with a big question mark.
After reporting it to the front desk, Ji Wan was forced to stand there pitifully, wearing her cute cartoon pajamas and holding her large suitcase.
“I’m sorry, Ms. Ji. All the rooms are full. Currently, there is only one bed available in a double room. Would you like me to contact them for you?”
The front desk lady said with a polite smile.
Looking outside at the pitch-black night, with the stars and moon hidden by clouds, Ji Wan suddenly remembered what Lin Luo had whispered to her mysteriously at dinner in the lobby: “Hey, Ji Xiaowan, let me tell you, someone died in this hotel. I heard there’s a ghost at night.”
During the day, Ji Wan was fearless and even laughed at Lin Luo.
She had vowed that ghosts were no big deal and that she’d fight them one by one.
However, at night, looking at the swaying shadows of the trees outside and hearing the howling cold wind, Ji Wan realized she was quite scared. After all, besides trying it once when she was little, she had never dared to watch anything related to ghosts.
Ji Wan shivered instantly, her legs and arms uncontrollably trembling.
“Weiwei must be asleep. I shouldn’t bother her,” Ji Wan thought considerately.
Then, she pulled her suitcase and, feeling weak and helpless, followed the front desk sister toward the only available bed.
Taking the elevator, what a coincidence, it’s the same floor, Ji Wan thought as the front desk person pressed the button.
They got off the elevator and turned left.
What a coincidence, the same direction, Ji Wan exclaimed inwardly.
Then the front desk sister stopped in the hallway in front of Ji Wan’s room.
“Wait, no way!” Ji Wan’s eyelid twitched, and she was suddenly terrified.
Then she watched the front desk sister knock on Gu Nianqing’s door, not even turning to look at Ji Wan’s horrified expression.
Hearing the knock, Gu Nianqing, who was sitting on a sofa chair by the floor-to-ceiling window in her room, reached up to take off her gold-rimmed glasses from her high nose bridge and gently placed the book she was holding face down on the table.
She was wearing a fitted deep-blue silk pajama set, with the buttons neatly fastened one by one, giving off a strong, cold, and aloof vibe.
Upon hearing the knock, the corners of her lips curled into a smile. She got up to open the door as if she had expected it.
Seeing Gu Nianqing, Ji Wan felt hopeless.
She instantly wanted to be tough and refuse, then turn her back on Gu Nianqing and go back to her room.
However, Lin Luo’s words echoed in her ears. “Ji Xiaowan, be careful. I heard there are often supernatural events on your floor.”
Remembering the sneaky expression on Lin Luo’s face before she left, Ji Wan’s heart suddenly shrank.
“No… there can’t really be a ghost, right?” Ji Wan’s face instantly turned pale, and cold sweat broke out on her back. The scary movie scenes she’d watched as a child played on a loop in her mind.
“Prosperity, democracy, civilization, harmony…”
Ji Wan chanted it a hundred times in her head.
Gu Nianqing watched, amused, as Ji Wan acted as cowardly as she could be. It seemed the news she had “accidentally” leaked to Lin Luo had spread.
Someone had jumped to their death in this hotel, but that building was now abandoned.
After the front desk sister left, Ji Wan awkwardly stared at Gu Nianqing, but she quickly looked down and fiddled with her fingers.
In front was the big ice block, Gu Nianqing, and behind her was the ghostly room.
Ji Wan just stood there foolishly in the hallway, not daring to say a word.
“Aren’t you coming in?” Gu Nianqing’s cool, indifferent voice sounded.
She leaned against the doorframe, her eyes lightly scanning the girl who was looking down and playing with her fingers.
“Ah, oh, I’m coming in.” Ji Wan looked at the dark ends of the hallway on both sides. Only the light above her was on.
In the middle of the night, a cold wind blew.
Ji Wan instantly lost her nerve. What was Gu Nianqing compared to a ghost? A ghost was scarier.
Then, she cautiously pulled her suitcase into Gu Nianqing’s luxurious double room.
“I want to report this. Why is the female lead’s regular double room more luxurious and has a better view than my single room?” Ji Wan thought, full of complaints and with her jaw dropped.
She remembered that from her original room, she could only see a few ornamental trees and the hotel building across the street, and the room wasn’t very big.
Compared to the female lead’s room, which was three times the size of hers and had a huge luxurious bathtub, a giant floor-to-ceiling window, and an unbeatable sea view.
Ji Wan was stunned, as if she had never seen anything like it.
Ji Wan wanted to report the hotel immediately for treating them differently, with the same price but different service.
Seeing the girl staring blankly at her room, Gu Nianqing didn’t show much emotion. She walked over. “How long are you going to stare? I need to go to sleep. That bed is yours.”
She gestured to one of the two beds side by side, indicating it was for Ji Wan.
“Ah, oh. I’ll go to sleep right away.”
She couldn’t afford to offend her, so she’d better go to sleep quickly. Ji Wan pulled her suitcase to the bedside and obediently got into bed, not daring to say another word.
She wrapped herself tightly in the blanket, leaving only a pair of big, round almond eyes showing.
With a click, Gu Nianqing turned off the light. The room instantly became dark and silent. Ji Wan even deliberately slowed her breathing.
Ten minutes later, Ji Wan still wasn’t asleep. Her mind was forced to replay all sorts of horror movie scenes.
“Damn, horror movies are evil,” she couldn’t sleep.
A long time passed…
Ji Wan still hadn’t slept.
“Um, Gu… Gu Nianqing, are you asleep?”
In the darkness, Ji Wan’s timid, weak voice came through, carefully calling out to the beautiful person who seemed to be asleep on the other bed.
“Hmm? What is it?” After a long pause, Gu Nianqing’s clear response came.
“Can I turn on a small nightlight? I’m a little scared.”
Ji Wan’s voice was timid and sounded a little like she was about to cry. She was curled up in the blanket and didn’t care if she suffocated herself.
A long time passed without a sound. Ji Wan thought Gu Nianqing had ignored her and gone to sleep.
She got even more scared and buried her head in the blanket, feeling a little wronged. She tried to stop herself from thinking about those scary things.
Tears welled up in her eyes, making the corners of her eyes red. She looked pitiful.
Click. The sound of the small nightlight next to Ji Wan’s bed turning on.
“If you’re scared, just turn on the light yourself. You don’t have to worry about me.” Gu Nianqing’s cool voice came from outside the blanket.
The warm yellow light allowed her to clearly see Ji Wan’s situation.
Gu Nianqing stood by Ji Wan’s bed, looking at the girl wrapped up like a silkworm, a helpless and pitiful sight.
A feeling of heartache spread through her.
“It’s okay. I’m here. Go to sleep. Don’t be scared,” Gu Nianqing’s cool voice carried a hint of tenderness as she soothed the frightened Ji Wan.
Her hand also involuntarily patted Ji Wan’s thin back through the blanket.
The person in the blanket instantly stiffened but slowly relaxed when she realized it was meant to be comforting.
The soft sobs from inside the blanket were slowly soothed and faded.
“Thank you,” the girl’s slightly hoarse voice came from inside the blanket. If Gu Nianqing hadn’t been paying close attention, she wouldn’t have heard it.
A sense of protectiveness arose in Gu Nianqing’s heart, and her heart began to beat faster, all because of Ji Wan.
The morning sunlight streamed in from the floor-to-ceiling window, falling on the girl who was still sleeping soundly on the hotel bed.
The girl was sleeping on her side, her hair disheveled, with faint red tear stains on the corners of her eyes from crying the night before.
Her fair, soft skin reflected slightly in the sunlight, looking pinkish and white.
Her long, thick eyelashes fluttered restlessly, and her cherry-red mouth was so adorable.
Gu Nianqing saw Ji Wan’s cute and charming sleeping pose as soon as she opened her eyes.
When she came out after washing up, the girl was still asleep, but a mischievous, fair leg peeked out from her cartoon sleep dress.
She was hugging the blanket tightly, which was inexplicably sensual and took one’s breath away.
Gu Nianqing’s face reddened slightly, and she moved her gaze away, walking out of the room to escape this place of trouble, her back staggering a little.
After she had slept enough, Ji Wan found that Gu Nianqing had already left.
She suddenly thought of something, and her face turned slightly red.
“Ah! I was so embarrassing last night.
That big ice block, Gu Nianqing, actually coaxed me to sleep. It’s so shameful.
But she doesn’t seem to be that bad of a person,” Ji Wan thought, recalling Gu Nianqing’s gentle pats from the night before.
After a quick wash and getting dressed, she went to the hotel cafeteria to meet up with Bai Weiwei and the others.
Seeing Bai Weiwei’s slender and graceful figure, Ji Wan happily walked over quickly.
Then she suddenly noticed a familiar face next to Lin Luo, across from Bai Weiwei.
Ji Wan’s steps stopped, and the look of shock on her face did not escape Gu Nianqing’s eyes.
Ji Wan walked over and secretly pulled Bai Weiwei aside, whispering, “Sister Weiwei, why is Gu Nianqing here with us?”
“Wanwan, the teacher just assigned the free-time groups. You, me, Lin Luo, and Gu Nianqing have been grouped together.”
Bai Weiwei explained gently to Ji Wan, her face adorned with a proper smile.
Seeing Ji Wan act like a thief, she was amused and patted her head. It was so fluffy, like a little cat’s, making it hard to stop.
“Don’t pat it anymore. I won’t grow tall!” Ji Wan begged Bai Weiwei with her hands over her head.
“Haha, alright, come eat.” Bai Weiwei said and pulled Ji Wan to sit down at the table.
Gu Nianqing watched their interaction with a cold eye, her eyes slightly dimmed.
But her expression remained calm.
Only delicious food and beautiful people are worth a moment’s notice.
Even though it was a little awkward being with Gu Nianqing last night, Gu Nianqing had a blank, icy face, so it looked like she didn’t care.
Ji Wan relaxed and happily ate the food in front of her. She just seemed to have forgotten something.
