I Just Want to be a Throwaway Character - Chapter 5
Chapter 5: The Best in the World
Meanwhile, on the other side of the sports field, a group of boys and girls were gathered, watching Ji Wan from a distance and chatting.
“I bet Ji Wan got rejected again. Look at her, she looks so sad.”
“I think she just didn’t eat enough, ha ha ha…”
“It’s definitely about Gu Nianqing. Who doesn’t know Ji Wan has a crush on her?”
“Hey, Shen An, here’s your chance! Go for it.”
As soon as the words fell, everyone’s eyes turned to the boy sitting on a stone bench, staring longingly at Ji Wan.
He had a handsome, sunny face, a slender figure, and his loose-fitting sports shirt subtly revealed his toned muscles.
His messy short hair gave him a youthful, vibrant look, and a pair of small canine teeth made his smile a little bit endearing and innocent.
“I don’t know… Ji Wan looks like she wants to be alone,” Shen An said with an embarrassed smile.
“Haha… Everyone knows your childhood crush, Ji Wan, was definitely rejected by Gu Nianqing. Now’s your chance to seize the opportunity!” one classmate teased.
“Hurry up, or someone else will get there first,” another encouraged.
“Exactly. Gu Nianqing not being interested in Ji Wan is your biggest advantage,” a third chimed in.
They were all caught up in their animated discussion, unaware that Gu Nianqing was sitting behind a large tree nearby.
A gentle breeze blew across Gu Nianqing’s forehead, her long hair swaying in the wind, and a few pages of her book were flipped over.
The owner of the book was looking at the distant lake, lost in thought, her eyes dark and unreadable.
Finally, the school bell rang.
Ji Wan left, and Shen An never went over to greet her.
In the days that followed, aside from class, Gu Nianqing never saw Ji Wan again.
Even if Ji Wan saw her outside of class, she would consciously run far away, determined to stay clear of Gu Nianqing.
No one was waiting at her front door anymore, no one was deliberately “bumping” into her for a chance encounter, no one was pointlessly bothering her to go to the cafeteria, no one…
Just as Ji Wan had said, she really wasn’t approaching her anymore.
Gu Nianqing tried to dismiss the chaotic thoughts in her mind, not wanting to dwell on it, but her heart always felt strangely empty.
Ji Wan’s social circle in the class grew. She was originally a cheerful and optimistic person, like a little sun.
She laughed and talked brilliantly with everyone, including Lin Luo. But the moment she saw Gu Nianqing, the smile on her face would vanish in an instant, like a switch had been flipped.
She wouldn’t say a single word to her, except when turning in homework.
In just one short week, the news spread throughout the entire school.
Ji Wan had given up on pursuing Gu Nianqing. Those who had a crush on Ji Wan quickly became restless.
After all, their previous rival was Gu Nianqing, and no one could ever compare to a prodigy like her.
They were not on the same “freakishly talented” level—getting perfect scores on every exam, excelling in all abilities, winning all sorts of major awards, and already participating in family company management.
Ji Wan was cute, charming, and approachable. She had many secret admirers, and some students from other classes would sneak in to get a glimpse of her.
In contrast, Gu Nianqing was aloof and came from a powerful family, so even though she was beautiful, not many people dared to provoke her.
That’s why Ji Wan had always been the most secretly admired person in the school.
Teenagers are always restless. Ji Wan had already been called out three times today.
Every time she saw the boys’ faces turn red and their words stumble, Ji Wan wanted to turn and leave.
She was very familiar with this experience. In high school and even college, she had been confessed to countless times.
“Yo, guess how long it’ll take Ji Wan to finish the battle. Place your bets!” Lin Luo shouted in the classroom, enjoying the show.
“I’ll bet 5,000. Three minutes. That’s my whole week’s allowance.”
“I’ll bet 10,000. Four minutes. The previous ones were all less than five minutes.”
“I’ll bet…”
When Ji Wan walked in, she saw how excited they all were.
“Sorry, two minutes. No one guessed it right. I win,” Ji Wan said with a sweet smile and a mischievous glint in her eye.
She snatched the money from Lin Luo’s hand and sat on his desk, counting it.
Her two fair, slender legs dangled, making her look like a cute miser.
“Wanwan, you didn’t bet!”
“Exactly!”
“That’s not fair, Wanwan. You can’t cheat.”
“…”
A chorus of protests erupted.
“Well, you didn’t win either. Besides, I’m the one who set this up. Lin Luo and I will split it seventy-thirty.”
The girl’s eyes curved as she smiled, revealing her pearly white teeth.
They were too embarrassed to ask for their money back, so they all went to vent their frustration on Lin Luo.
“Ji Xiaowan, you promised you wouldn’t sell me out! You jerk! Stop, help, don’t chase me!”
Lin Luo was chased out of the classroom by a few people as Ji Wan laughed.
Watching the commotion in the classroom, Gu Nianqing observed the girl’s smiling face and adorable interactions from an angle where Ji Wan couldn’t see her.
“Was Ji Wan always like this?” Gu Nianqing wondered.
The girl seemed to have a magical power, captivating Gu Nianqing’s attention.
She watched Ji Wan intensely from a place where she couldn’t be seen, her gaze uncontrollably glued to the girl.
The days passed with Ji Wan eating and playing. Today, it was her homeroom teacher’s class.
But half the class time had gone by, and there was no sign of him.
The students in the elite class were mostly highly self-disciplined, with the exception of the two oddballs, Lin Luo and Ji Wan.
Because of their similar personalities, they had inexplicably developed a bond of “revolutionary friendship.”
Ji Wan leaned across the aisle and poked Lin Luo, winking and gesturing towards the door, signaling for them to go outside.
Gu Nianqing watched their interaction coolly. The formulas she was writing became inexplicably annoying, and she gripped her pen tighter.
Ji Wan and Lin Luo crept toward the grade office like a pair of thieves, crouching by the door to eavesdrop.
But Ji Wan couldn’t hear anything. She simply leaned her head against the door.
Suddenly, the door was pulled open from inside. Ji Wan lost her balance and fell onto a girl in a white dress.
The girl in white, due to the momentum, also fell to the floor, acting as Ji Wan’s human cushion.
“Oof,” the girl cried out in pain. Ji Wan quickly got off her and helped her up.
Ji Wan said apologetically, “I’m so sorry! Are you okay?”
“I’m fine,” came a soft, pleasant voice.
Ji Wan took a good look and saw a pure and lovely girl.
Ji Wan couldn’t describe the feeling, she just thought, “She’s so beautiful!”
Ji Wan swore she wasn’t usually so boy-crazy.
The girl was as pure as a snow lotus, with a delicate figure, a gentle expression, and skin as smooth as porcelain. Her eyebrows were like distant mountains, and her lips were the perfect shape for a kiss.
“Ji Wan, what are you doing here? Let go of her hand!” her homeroom teacher said angrily.
This little brat was holding someone’s hand like a hooligan, which embarrassed him.
“Mr. Yan, I was looking for you! You weren’t here for half the class, I was worried about you!”
Ji Wan used her nauseatingly sweet tone. Every time she used it, her teacher would let her off the hook.
“Alright, alright, don’t give me that. It just so happens that you and Gu Nianqing are the only ones without desk partners. The new student will sit with you. You two can get acquainted.”
Mr. Yan waved his hand dismissively.
“Take your desk partner back to the class and introduce her. I have another class to teach, so I’m leaving.”
Looking at her beautiful new deskmate, Ji Wan waved at her teacher like a little puppy. “Bye, Mr. Yan, you’re the best!”
Bai Weiwei observed her new deskmate with interest. She was lively and adorable, like a chubby panda.
Ji Wan knew without guessing that her new deskmate was Bai Weiwei, the legendary true love of the female lead in the book. But she had to pretend she didn’t know.
“Deskmate, deskmate, what’s your name? I’m Ji Wan, Ji from ‘season,’ and Wan from ‘evening.'”
Ji Wan excitedly took Bai Weiwei’s hand and chattered nonstop on the way back to the classroom.
Lin Luo had disappeared a while ago. That traitor probably snuck back into class.
Oh well, this was the perfect opportunity to get to know her new deskmate.
Bai Weiwei patiently answered all of Ji Wan’s questions, showing her elegant and well-mannered demeanor.
It was now recess, and the hallway was bustling with students.
They saw their school’s “flower,” Ji Wan, holding the hand of another beautiful girl who was clearly not from their school.
They were about the same height, but their auras were completely different: one a lively little sun, the other a fragrant water lily.
They seemed to be engrossed in conversation, and Ji Wan’s adorable giggles could be heard from time to time.
What Ji Wan didn’t know was that half an hour later, “Ji Wan’s new flame” would be trending on the school’s forum, complete with pictures and what seemed to be a legitimate story.
Of course, when Ji Wan found out, she discussed the boring gossip life of modern high schoolers with Bai Weiwei.
“Let me introduce you to my absolutely beautiful deskmate, aren’t you all jealous, you mortals?”
Ji Wan pulled Bai Weiwei into the classroom and excitedly introduced her to everyone.
Her face was bright with a radiant smile, her eyes curved into crescents, like a child proudly showing off a new toy.
Bai Weiwei looked at her lively and adorable new deskmate with a helpless but amused look in her eyes.
She introduced herself to the students in the elite class. “Hello, my name is Bai Weiwei. I just transferred back from abroad. It’s a pleasure to meet you all.”
Her demeanor was cool and detached but still approachable, instantly winning people over.
“Oh, a new student, welcome!” Lin Luo cheered.
“Welcome, Wanwan’s new deskmate! We hope you can handle our class’s rowdiness,” one student said.
“Welcome to the class, Bai. If you need anything, just ask. I’d be happy to help,” another said.
“What a beauty! Wanwan is so lucky!”
“We have a gentle beauty in our class now. So touching!”
“…”
The students in the class warmly welcomed the newcomer, Bai Weiwei.
After all, her looks were top-notch even among the handsome and beautiful students in the elite class.
She was just as flawlessly beautiful as Ji Wan and Gu Nianqing.
Ji Wan ignored the chattering crowd, pulled Bai Weiwei’s hand, and led her to her seat.
“Deskmate, deskmate, hurry! Do you want to sit on the inside or the outside?”
The girl with the wide, round, apricot-shaped eyes asked the gentle and mild-mannered girl next to her.
Bai Weiwei chuckled and ruffled her new deskmate’s hair. She was a bundle of energy, but so cute.
They had only just met, but it felt like they had known each other for a long time.
“Whatever you like,” she said with a hint of affection in her voice. Ji Wan felt like a little sister to her.
“Then wait a minute, I’ll make room for you.”
Ji Wan looked at her “slightly” messy desk, embarrassed, and scratched her head, enthusiastically saying to Bai Weiwei.
The girl’s body and soul showed her welcome to her new deskmate, her liveliness almost too much to handle.
“Okay,” Bai Weiwei replied, her voice still soft.
