Chapter 40: Qixi Festival Extra: Past and Present Life
In the Celestial Realm’s Jade Firmament Immortal Palace, at the center of a boundless flower field, stood a giant banyan tree. A gentle breeze stirred, sending a shower of petals dancing on the wind. Seated beneath the tree was the master of this palace, a person whose beauty was beyond words.
Her long hair flowed around her, and her features held a transcendent beauty that was otherworldly. She wore a pristine white immortal gown that perfectly accentuated her graceful, slender figure. Her eyes were closed, and she was basking in the moment’s serenity.
Suddenly, a small movement sounded. A soft body pressed against her back, and then a pair of small, delicate hands covered her eyes. “Guess who I am?” a sweet, playful voice asked.
A smile touched the corners of the person’s lips. Without answering, she simply reached up, took the little hands in her own, and gently pulled them away. She turned to face the petite, beautiful girl, her eyes full of warmth.
“Wuyan, you didn’t even guess. Hmph,” the girl said, pretending to pout, but she had already buried herself in the other woman’s arms.
“I knew it was you. What was there to guess?” Wuyan’s cool voice was filled with doting affection as she embraced the girl.
A blush crept across Ji Wan’s cheeks. She looked up at the person, whose every hair seemed to be perfect. “But if you knew it was me, why didn’t you hug me?” the girl pouted, wrapping her arms tightly around the waist of the Jade Firmament Immortal Lord.
Wuyan said nothing, only raising a hand to gently stroke the girl’s hair. “I was waiting for you to throw yourself into my arms,” she whispered into Ji Wan’s ear. Wuyan was satisfied when she saw the girl’s ears turn crimson, and she let out a soft laugh.
Ji Wan was a little flustered. “Then why were you looking at all those flowers? Tell me, have you taken a liking to another flower?” she said, getting more and more upset as she thought about it. She looked up at Wuyan with a wronged expression, as if she were a heartless man.
“I only love this one flower, and there are no others,” Wuyan said softly, cupping the little flower spirit’s tearful face.
“Then you’re not allowed to look at any other flowers. You can only look at me,” Ji Wan said possessively, her face flushed and a look of contentment on her lips.
“Then what if I look at the trees? Or the clouds? Or something else…?” Wuyan teased, kissing Ji Wan’s forehead.
“No! Not allowed! You can only look at me!” Ji Wan said, jealously covering Wuyan’s eyes with her hands.
The next moment, they fell back together onto the soft grass. Ji Wan stared blankly at her own reflection in the eyes of the person beneath her. For some reason, tears began to well up and fall, and she couldn’t stop them.
Wuyan wiped Ji Wan’s tears away, her heart filled with both helplessness and love. “It’s okay, don’t cry. I won’t tease you anymore. I only love you, no one else,” Wuyan soothed her, her voice gentle and deep. She wanted to give the girl all the beauty in the world. If anyone were to see the legendary and aloof Jade Firmament Immortal Lord being so tender, they would be utterly shocked. She was a legend in the Celestial Realm, yet she was being so gentle with a little flower spirit who had only been an immortal for a hundred years.
Ji Wan sobbed, hugging Wuyan tightly. “You promised you wouldn’t abandon me. I only have you.”
“There, there. Didn’t you want to see the starry river for the Qixi Festival? I’ll take you there, so please don’t cry anymore.” Wuyan kissed the corners of her tear-stained eyes with a gentle touch. A flicker of apology appeared in her eyes before it was gone. She picked up the small Ji Wan and used her power. Soon, a brilliant night sky appeared before Ji Wan’s eyes.
Ji Wan wrapped her arms around Wuyan’s neck, looking at everything with a curious gaze. The vast expanse of stars was both beautiful and breathtaking. They watched in silence. After a while, Ji Wan rested her head on Wuyan’s shoulder.
“Wuyan, the mortals say the love of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl is true love, a beautiful thing. But if I can’t see you for a moment, I feel so much pain and suffering. Why do they say that kind of love is beautiful?” Ji Wan asked softly, her heart aching at the thought of a day without Wuyan. Her world was small, so small that it only contained Wuyan. That’s why she could never leave her.
“Perhaps their love is more like the perfection that mortals bestow upon it,” Wuyan said, looking at Ji Wan’s gloomy face as she tried to explain.
“Will you leave me?” Ji Wan asked stubbornly, wanting Wuyan’s answer.
Wuyan did not respond. She looked at the boundless starry river. Then, she looked down at Ji Wan with a serious expression. “I am willing to go to the ends of the earth and the firmament for you, and we will face life and death together.”
“Then I will risk everything for you and will not live alone,” Ji Wan replied with equal determination.
Wuyan smiled, leaning in until their noses touched. “Then tonight, can I make you risk everything for me?” Wuyan’s voice was alluring, her eyes gleaming.
“You… you’re being improper,” Ji Wan said, her face flushing as she realized what Wuyan meant.
The next second, they were back on the large bed in the Jade Firmament Immortal Palace.
Soon, red candles flickered, the bed curtains gently swayed, and the room was filled with the colors of spring.
