I Just Want to be a Throwaway Character - Chapter 4
Chapter 4: The Best in the World
The car arrived at her villa complex.
Ji Wan quickly thanked the driver and fled the “sinful” car as if her life depended on it.
She didn’t notice the complex look in Gu Nianqing’s eyes as the latter watched her from behind.
After rushing home, Ji Wan enjoyed a lavish dinner.
She then soaked in the original owner’s ultra-luxurious bathtub, finally feeling alive again.
“Ah, the joy of being a rich woman,” Ji Wan sighed comfortably in the tub.
Large handfuls of rose petals were extravagantly scattered in the bath, with a few clinging to her soft, fair skin.
After her bath, Ji Wan nonchalantly wrapped herself in a towel and went to the full-length mirror by her bedroom balcony. “I’m so beautiful,” she said to herself narcissistically, giving her reflection a wink.
In the mirror, the girl’s hair was still wet from her bath, and water droplets trickled down her sweet, milky-white skin.
Her eyes were slightly red from the steam, her cute, apricot-shaped eyes wide and round.
Her exposed collarbone and pale, silky skin gave her a hint of allure, making her both innocent and enchanting.
A cool breeze drifted in from the balcony. The girl, wrapped in her towel, went to close the sliding glass door.
She then froze, her eyes wide as if she had seen a ghost.
She saw the indifferent, ethereal face of the female lead, Gu Nianqing, who was staring right in her direction from her balcony across the way.
The atmosphere solidified. Ji Wan’s face instantly turned bright red. She stiffly turned and, like a robot, walked jerkily back into her room.
She quickly pulled the curtains shut, covered her face, and crouched down.
“Ah, why is the female lead on the balcony opposite me? How long has she been watching? So embarrassing!” Ji Wan felt like crying, but she was also relieved she hadn’t been naked.
She felt so awkward she could dig a Barbie Dream Castle with her toes.
Gu Nianqing had originally intended to go out on her balcony for some fresh air.
Ever since that annoying pest, Ji Wan, moved in, she hadn’t gone out there.
Tonight, her heart felt strangely restless, so she came out for a bit.
As soon as she did, she saw Ji Wan wrapped in a towel, talking to herself in the mirror, her expressions lively and animated.
She was nothing like the spooked-looking girl she had seen during the day.
Gu Nianqing should have left the balcony and looked away, but her legs were rooted to the spot, and her eyes were uncontrollably drawn to every expression on the girl’s face.
She was inexplicably looking forward to Ji Wan seeing her. Gu Nianqing thought the girl would excitedly pester her for a chat, and she would, as usual, tell her to go away. But Ji Wan didn’t do that.
She wasn’t her usual self; she seemed to have become more interesting.
Gu Nianqing’s heart inexplicably fluttered, and the person who made it flutter was the very person she detested.
Sunlight filtered through the gap in the curtains, casting thin lines on the serene face of the sleeping girl on the dark-colored bedsheets.
Suddenly, a crisp phone alarm sounded.
Ji Wan grumbled and rolled over.
With her eyes still closed, she expertly turned off the alarm, pulled the blanket up, and fell back into a deep sleep.
Unaware of the time, her slender legs were still uninhibitedly draped over the pillow she had been hugging, her sleeping posture quite relaxed.
Meanwhile, at Gu Nianqing’s villa.
Gu Nianqing was already dressed in her school uniform, sitting at the dining table, sipping coffee, and quietly reading a stock market newspaper.
A pair of wire-rimmed glasses rested on Gu Nianqing’s high nose, highlighting her exquisite, beautiful features.
Gu Nianqing took a sip of her coffee, her eyes unconsciously drifting to the villa gate outside the window.
She could clearly see that the gate was empty. The flowers in the garden were as vibrant and beautiful as ever, but they were missing a familiar figure.
Normally, at this time, she would see Ji Wan eagerly waiting outside, hoping for a chance encounter.
A strange, uncomfortable feeling lingered around Gu Nianqing. She didn’t think much of it and got ready for school as usual.
8:30 a.m., master bedroom of the Ji family villa.
The girl on the bed sat up, still groggy, hugging her pillow. Her apricot eyes were half-open, misty with sleep.
Ji Wan yawned widely and ungracefully.
One side of her nightgown had slipped down due to her sleeping position, revealing her round, milky-white shoulder.
A few stray strands of hair stuck up, adding to the girl’s childlike charm. She looked incredibly cute.
“Xiao Yi, what time is it?”
No one responded. Silence.
“Xiao Yi?” Ji Wan called out, her mind still a bit fuzzy.
After a moment of dazed sitting on the bed, Ji Wan remembered that she had blocked System 111.
After unblocking 111, a shrill voice immediately rang out in her mind. “Ah, Host, have you finally remembered your big baby? I’m so touched!”
Ji Wan’s ears instantly felt like they were ringing. The noise jolted her wide awake.
“Shut up,” Ji Wan commanded, covering her ears. All traces of sleepiness were gone.
She lazily got up and walked toward the bathroom, asking System 111, “What time is it?”
“Host, it’s 8:50! You’ve already missed morning self-study and the first period,” System 111 said obsequiously.
Ji Wan’s footsteps faltered. She then turned and quickly walked to the bed, picked up her phone, and opened it—8:51.
“Ah! I’m late!”
After a frantic scramble, Ji Wan sat in the car with a slice of bread in her mouth, her new driver at the wheel.
Ji Wan had initially thought about just taking the day off.
But then she remembered the menacing warning from her homeroom teacher to contact her parents.
The good girl Ji Wan obediently put on her school uniform and backpack…
She was definitely not going to school because she was afraid of seeing the female lead and feeling embarrassed.
When the bell for the second period rang, Gu Nianqing looked at the empty seat in front of her, lost in thought.
When Ji Wan rushed into the classroom, she was still out of breath and holding onto the door. She looked up and met the icy gaze of her homeroom and Chinese teacher, Ms. Yan.
Ji Wan shivered under her teacher’s glare. She instantly straightened her back and, like an obedient student, raised her hand and said, “Reporting in.”
Sweat beaded on the girl’s face from running, and her cheeks were flushed like a ripe red apple, making one want to take a bite.
The attention of the boys and girls in the class was drawn to the girl’s cute, innocent, and beautiful appearance.
She was so endearingly adorable that they couldn’t look away.
“Come in. Don’t be late next time.”
Perhaps it was because Ji Wan seemed so compliant, or perhaps to avoid wasting more class time, the teacher didn’t make things difficult for her and let her in.
Ji Wan obediently went to her seat, pulled out her textbook, and conscientiously played the part of a diligent student.
Her back was as straight as a little elementary school student.
Ms. Yan gave her a satisfied look and continued with her lesson.
But as soon as the teacher’s attention was elsewhere, Ji Wan instantly reverted to her old self.
She just didn’t dare to be as wild, secretly relaxing her straight posture.
Gu Nianqing watched her series of movements as she entered the classroom, and her heart stirred.
Aside from a quick, accidental glance as she walked by, Ji Wan didn’t look at her again.
Gu Nianqing stared at Ji Wan’s back.
She watched the girl scratch her head while looking at the textbook, listened to the soft, gentle sound of her reciting the text, and watched her fidget in her seat.
Gu Nianqing felt like she was possessed. Why was she so focused on this annoying woman?
She forced herself to look away, but her attention was soon drawn back, like two powerful magnets attracting each other.
A faint blush appeared on her cool, detached face, but no one noticed.
Even if they had, they wouldn’t have associated it with Ji Wan.
After all, she was known to despise Ji Wan. Yes, she hated Ji Wan, and that’s why she was paying attention.
Gu Nianqing found an excuse for herself.
The last class of the morning was P.E. Ji Wan changed into her sportswear in a private locker room.
When she came out, she saw the door opposite hers slowly open, and she saw the female lead’s face—a face that belonged to a “dog-licker.”
Ji Wan reflexively turned and quickly walked away, her steps as fast as if she were running an 800-meter race.
“Oh my god, I just embarrassed myself yesterday. I’ve lost years of my life.”
The shock from last night was too much for Ji Wan. Now, every time she saw the female lead, she felt so mortified she wanted to run, and she was doing just that.
“Stop.” Gu Nianqing’s cold and pleasant voice rang out behind Ji Wan.
There were only two people here. Ji Wan wanted to pretend she hadn’t heard and kept walking quickly to escape.
Damn it, why was the hallway in this noble school’s locker room so long?
“Ji Wan,” the pleasant voice sounded again from behind her.
But to Ji Wan’s ears, it sounded like a death sentence from hell.
She stiffened and stopped. She couldn’t pretend not to hear.
Gu Nianqing took a few long strides and quickly closed the distance Ji Wan had tried to create.
“Ugh, is being tall a big deal?”
Seeing Gu Nianqing a head taller than her, Ji Wan recalled the book’s description of her “178 cm post-differentiation height.”
Ji Wan felt a pang of jealousy.
Gu Nianqing stood in front of Ji Wan, looking down at the petite girl.
She watched Ji Wan’s eyes darting around anxiously.
Her wet, apricot-shaped eyes were bright and adorable, and her expression was awkward, as if she were being forced to be here.
“There it is again, that heart-fluttering feeling,” Gu Nianqing thought, frowning slightly.
Ji Wan bravely looked up at Gu Nianqing, but seeing her cold, emotionless eyes, she meekly looked down at her intertwined fingers.
“Well… is there something you need? If… if not, I’ll be going.”
Gu Nianqing had been staring at her for half a minute. Ji Wan was scared.
She had never liked dealing with cold people, especially those who clearly disliked her.
Now, being stared at by the female lead with that kind of look, she instantly felt deflated and cowardly.
“What game are you playing?”
Gu Nianqing crossed her arms, her eyes filled with a look of disdain as she asked coldly.
“Wh… what game?” Ji Wan was confused.
A big “what?” appeared on her face.
“Heh, I advise you not to waste your time on me. It’s useless. I will not fall for you. You’d better watch yourself.”
Gu Nianqing didn’t waste any more words. She gave Ji Wan a cold look and walked past her.
“Wait!” Ji Wan was bold enough to grab Gu Nianqing’s arm, her expression a mix of embarrassment and anger.
“Who… who wants you to like me?”
“Listen up! I, Ji Wan, didn’t, don’t, and won’t like you in the future.
Don’t worry, put away that look of disdain and pity. I won’t come near you on my own.”
The girl’s cute face was not her usual soft self. She spoke each word clearly and seriously, her expression determined and her eyes firm.
“It better be.” Gu Nianqing pulled her arm away and said coldly.
She should have been happy, but seeing Ji Wan’s serious expression made her feel a subtle sense of displeasure.
“Wow, Host! You’re so cool! That’s the female lead with a two-meter aura!” System 111 exclaimed.
“Damn you, you narcissistic b*tch! Let’s see who’s going to marry you, you’ll be lonely for the rest of your life, you dead straight woman,” Ji Wan thought angrily, stomping her foot. Her cheeks were flushed red with anger.
“Xiao Yi, I’m quitting. It’s so frustrating. Why should I be a dog-licker? I’m going to be her dad.”
The girl sat on the grass by the sports field, venting her anger to the system.
“Um, Host… Your task is to be a dog-licker, or you’ll fail. And if you fail, there’s no 10 million,” System 111 patiently tried to persuade her.
“The mission is just to make her the richest person. I’m giving up all the other tasks.
I’ve decided to build a good relationship with her future wife and whisper in her ear,” Ji Wan said, clenching her fist, full of confidence.
“Uh, Host.
Whatever makes you happy. I’ll be updating the system and might be gone for a while.
Good luck! Ganbatte!”
After System 111 finished speaking, its voice disappeared.
