I Just Want to be a Throwaway Character - Chapter 17
Chapter 17: World’s Best
“Heh, darling. So you like that kind of thing, huh?” Gu Nianqing’s voice came through the phone, cold yet seductive.
Ji Wan’s face instantly turned bright red. “W-Why are you the one answering?”
“Oh? Not me, then who? Who were you calling ‘big sister’?” Gu Nianqing’s calm voice took on a dangerous, icy tone, as cold as a winter day. The jealousy spread from the phone.
Scared, Ji Wan quickly explained, “It’s Bai Weiwei! Big sister Weiwei!”
“Heh, she’s about to get married, but you’re still calling her so sweetly. Are you planning to cheat on me?” Gu Nianqing’s mind flashed back to how close Ji Wan and Bai Weiwei were in high school, and a sour fire ignited inside her. Her tone became more aggressive than she even realized.
“Uh…”
Realizing that Gu Nianqing might be jealous, Ji Wan’s mind went into overdrive, searching for a solution. “I call her that because it’s different. I can’t call big sister Weiwei ‘wife’,” Ji Wan retorted weakly.
Gu Nianqing’s sour fire instantly died down, and her tone became gentle again. “Alright, just kidding. What do you want to eat this afternoon? I’ll take you.”
“Uh, I have a date with big sister Weiwei this afternoon.”
Gu Nianqing didn’t say anything, and Ji Wan felt the jealousy radiating from the other end of the line once more. Ji Wan’s self-preservation kicked in, and she quickly explained, “Her partner is coming too.”
“Ji Wan, on our first day of marriage, you’re going to spend it with someone else?” Gu Nianqing’s cold tone drifted over, sounding very dangerous.
“Uh, then… then let’s go together?”
…
The Coffee Shop Encounter
After getting dressed, Ji Wan walked into the coffee shop that held so many memories. She hadn’t had their chocolate cake and strawberry daifuku in a long time, and she was really craving them. But she restrained her desires; she was here to vet Weiwei’s partner, so she needed to maintain the composure of a high-class lady and not be a glutton.
Ji Wan walked over to their reserved table. She saw Bai Weiwei waving at her, while her partner had their back to Ji Wan, so she couldn’t see their face clearly. Was it just her imagination, or did Bai Weiwei’s partner seem completely stiff?
From their back, she could tell they were a female Alpha. She looked tall, had a decent figure, and her clothes were well-styled. But for some reason, she was afraid to turn around and look at her. Ji Wan’s curiosity was suddenly piqued. She quickened her pace and sat down next to Bai Weiwei, determined to get a good look at her appearance.
However, the person was completely covered by a huge pair of sunglasses and a mask. Bai Weiwei looked at the person opposite her, who had instantly hidden herself, and just smiled helplessly. She let her be.
Out of politeness, Ji Wan greeted Weiwei’s partner warmly. But the person just nodded back, not saying a word. The atmosphere became awkward.
With no other choice, Bai Weiwei started chatting with Ji Wan, while her partner remained in the background. For some reason, Ji Wan felt a long-lost sense of familiarity from Bai Weiwei’s partner.
Suddenly, a plate of chocolate cake and strawberry daifuku was placed in front of Ji Wan.
“I didn’t order this, did I?” She glanced at Bai Weiwei, who shook her head. Ji Wan looked up, ready to explain to the waiter.
Then, a face she couldn’t be more familiar with came into view. “Why are you here? I thought you said you had something to do at the company?” Ji Wan asked Gu Nianqing in surprise, a hint of joy in her voice that she didn’t even notice herself.
She was still wearing the same business suit from the morning. Her long, beautiful black hair was draped over her shoulders. The form-fitting and clean look was stunning. Gu Nianqing calmly sat down next to Bai Weiwei’s partner and said with a faint smile, “How could I bear to leave my wife alone?”
“Who… who’s your wife?” Ji Wan’s face instantly flushed red. She was so embarrassed she wanted to find a hole to crawl into, especially with Bai Weiwei’s shocked expression next to her and the weirdly intense stare coming from behind those dark sunglasses.
Gu Nianqing’s gaze on Ji Wan grew dangerous, but her expression remained gentle. “Wanwan, stop messing around. I specifically ordered your favorite dessert.”
As if sensing the threat, Ji Wan immediately became well-behaved. She obediently picked up a fork and knife and ate the dessert under Gu Nianqing’s watchful eye, perfectly demonstrating what it meant to eat like a proper lady. She couldn’t help it; Bai Weiwei’s partner was sitting right across from her. But her speed didn’t slow down at all.
Satisfied with how cute and obedient Ji Wan was, Gu Nianqing raised an eyebrow and looked at the person next to her, who was still wrapped up tight. “How long are you going to keep up the act?”
Ji Wan looked up, curious, staring at Bai Weiwei’s partner. The strange sense of familiarity was back again. “Um, do I know you?” Unable to bear her curiosity, Ji Wan asked politely.
The masked person shook their head in a huge motion but still didn’t say a word, clearly acting guilty. The atmosphere became awkward once more.
“Alright, cut it out. Take it off. Are you going to keep this up until the wedding?” Bai Weiwei said with a gentle smile, though a hint of dark amusement was visible in her eyes.
Ji Wan stared even more intently at the masked person. Seeing Ji Wan’s attention on someone else, a subtle and familiar feeling of annoyance came over Gu Nianqing.
“Lin Luo, how much longer are you going to pretend?” Gu Nianqing mercilessly exposed the masked person’s futile struggle.
Clang. The fork in Ji Wan’s hand fell onto her plate. Her eyes grew dangerous, and her smile slowly twisted.
Lin Luo?
My fists are clenching. My fists are clenching.
Oh, my god. I asked her to take care of Weiwei, and she literally took her to bed?
Ji Wan was filled with a complex mix of anger and betrayal, like her family’s good cabbage had been eaten by a pig.
Lin Luo’s whole body stiffened, knowing she couldn’t hide any longer. She slowly raised her hands and took off her sunglasses and mask, saying to Ji Wan foolishly, “Hi, what a coincidence.”
“A coincidence my head! I knew something was up when you didn’t look for me after I came back. You were just waiting for this, weren’t you, you rotten Lin Luo?” Ji Wan fumed, wanting nothing more than to give her a couple of smacks on the head.
“W-Well… I was… I was just scared of you. With you angry and Old Gu backing you up, I can’t beat you,” Lin Luo said timidly.
Bai Weiwei helplessly touched Ji Wan’s head to smooth things over. “Alright, don’t scare her. I was the one who pursued Lin Luo.”
“You… you dared to let my Weiwei chase you?! I challenge you to a duel!” This not only failed to calm Ji Wan down but made her even angrier.
Perhaps emboldened by having her wife to back her up, Lin Luo dared to talk back. “Didn’t you also chase after Old Gu? Looking at the marks on your neck, you’re not doing so well either.”
“You… you’re asking for a beating!” Ji Wan stood up in a huff, moving to Gu Nianqing’s side and shouting at Lin Luo.
Lin Luo was so scared she instantly shrunk back in her seat. Bai Weiwei helplessly looked at the two behaving like elementary schoolers and gave Gu Nianqing a look, signaling for her to handle it.
As if receiving a distress signal, Gu Nianqing extended her long arm, pulled the fuming Ji Wan onto her lap, kissed her on the corner of the lips, and said in a gentle voice, “Alright, stop fussing. I was the one who pursued you.”
It all happened so fast. Ji Wan, startled, instinctively wrapped her arms around Gu Nianqing’s neck and pressed her face against her. Hearing her gentle and doting voice, her cheeks flushed, and she immediately lost all her strength.
Meanwhile, Lin Luo, being utterly cowardly, had already crawled under the table and was now on the other side, hugging her wife for comfort.
“Y-You… put me down. There are people here.” Ji Wan said to Gu Nianqing in a shy, small voice.
The soft body in her arms was so comfortable to hold. But worried that her little wife would be too embarrassed and get angry, Gu Nianqing placed her in the seat that Lin Luo had been in.
Lin Luo fought to suppress her laughter as she looked at Ji Wan and Gu Nianqing, her eyes full of gossip. Even Bai Weiwei looked on, intrigued by the interaction between Gu Nianqing and Ji Wan. They had seemed like two people who would never be together five years ago, but now they were so sweet and clingy. It was surprising.
Ji Wan, with a flushed face, glared at Lin Luo. “What are you looking at? Haven’t you ever seen a beautiful woman before?”
“Nope, I’ve never seen such a shameless beautiful woman,” Lin Luo replied, stroking her chin as if deep in thought.
“You… you, you just wait.” If it weren’t for the great Alpha next to her, Ji Wan would have shown her what kung fu was right there and then.
Lin Luo saw Gu Nianqing’s cold gaze. The words that were on the tip of her tongue instantly vanished. She honestly and obediently stayed next to her wife.
“Alright, Wanwan. You’re still keeping secrets from us. When did you get married?” Bai Weiwei asked, casually glancing at Gu Nianqing, a hint that she had already guessed some things.
“This morning.” Before Ji Wan could speak, Gu Nianqing answered for her, her voice just loud enough for everyone to hear clearly.
“Holy crap! Little Wan only came back a few days ago! What’s with that speed? I would’ve thought you got married in a flash!” Lin Luo was astounded. She and Bai Weiwei had known each other for so many years, and they only started dating last year. Lin Luo had planned to take wedding photos in a couple of days and show off to Gu Nianqing, but her speed was like a rocket.
Lin Luo gave Gu Nianqing a thumbs up. “NB doesn’t even begin to cover it.” Didn’t you used to say you hated Little Wan, to the death? Looks like you had a big change of heart.
Heh, women. If I hadn’t created that opportunity for you guys back then, it would’ve gone completely cold. Lin Luo struck a pose, looking smug and self-important. Little did she know that she was the one who hid from Bai Weiwei for three months after she confessed to her, acting like the biggest coward. If Bai Weiwei hadn’t cornered her at her company door, she’d probably still be single.
“I was afraid someone would snatch her away, so I had to move fast,” Gu Nianqing said, gently wiping the cream from the corner of Ji Wan’s lips. The sadness in her voice was probably only missed by Ji Wan, who was still heartlessly eating her dessert.
“My gosh, the female lead is so devoted,” System 111 marveled in Ji Wan’s mind.
“Holy cow, Little Wan, you’re the winner of life. I knew there was a reason Old Gu was so pure and without desires for the past five years. Well, she was always like that, but still. A golden bachelor Alpha like Old Gu is a rare find,” Lin Luo sighed to Ji Wan.
“What’s that? Are you jealous?” Bai Weiwei’s eyes turned dangerous as she looked at Lin Luo, her hand moving to Lin Luo’s waist.
“Hiss…” Lin Luo suppressed the yelp of pain from the pinch on her waist. She looked innocently at Bai Weiwei, not knowing what she had done to anger her wife.
“How is it that an Alpha who is so hard to find even with a lantern was rejected by a certain Omega?” Bai Weiwei crossed her arms over her chest and leaned back against the sofa. She unleashed her aura as a Triple Crown Film Queen, putting pressure on Lin Luo. She was clearly in a bad mood.
Lin Luo’s back was instantly covered in a cold sweat. She knew Bai Weiwei was thinking of that old grudge and suddenly felt very guilty.
Ji Wan looked at the strange atmosphere on the other side and felt a sudden wave of sympathy for Lin Luo. She suddenly realized that after marriage, it’s a question of who bullies whom, and she dismissed the urge to cause trouble for her.
Then, Ji Wan remembered something. She turned to Gu Nianqing and boldly asked, “Hey, Gu… Gu Nianqing, who do you listen to from now on?”
Her soft, sweet voice sounded like a little girl’s plea.
“Of course, I listen to you, my dear wife.” Gu Nianqing’s heart skipped a beat. She gently pinched Ji Wan’s soft cheeks and said with a tender, doting smile.
“Hmph, that’s more like it.”
Ji Wan was satisfied and forked another bite of cake into her mouth, her smile unyielding. She felt a strange sweetness in her heart.
