I Just Want to be a Throwaway Character - Chapter 11
Chapter 11: The Best in the World
Back at the Hospital
Ji Wan woke up in the hospital, a dazed look in her eyes. Her big, soulful eyes, paired with her confused expression, made her look incredibly cute.
“Wanwan, you’re awake. How are you feeling?” Bai Weiwei noticed Ji Wan was conscious and sat on the edge of her bed, gently touching Ji Wan’s forehead with a concerned look.
Coming back to her senses and realizing it was Bai Weiwei, Ji Wan immediately threw herself into Bai Weiwei’s arms for comfort.
“How did I get back here? Didn’t I fall in the water?” Ji Wan asked, peeking her head out from Bai Weiwei’s embrace.
“Gu Nianqing carried you back. You were both soaking wet when you arrived; it gave me a shock.” Bai Weiwei said softly, patting Ji Wan’s back.
Oh, it was Gu Nianqing. Wait, Gu Nianqing!
Suddenly remembering something, Ji Wan stiffened and quickly retreated from Bai Weiwei’s arms, burrowing back into her blanket, her face flushed.
“Wanwan, what’s wrong? Are you still not feeling well?” Bai Weiwei asked worriedly, looking at Ji Wan, who was acting like an ostrich under the blanket.
“Sister Weiwei, I’m a little tired again. Let me sleep a bit more. You go back to the hotel first, don’t worry about me.” Ji Wan offered an excuse.
“Alright, I’ll go back now. Lin Luo is also in a single room next to yours, as the teacher arranged it. If you get bored, you can go talk to her.” Bai Weiwei thought Ji Wan was just tired from the shock and gently agreed. She then stood up and thoughtfully closed the door behind her.
Now, only Ji Wan was left in the single room. Her face went from red to white under the blanket. She inexplicably felt like she was betraying her little angel, Weiwei. She racked her brain but couldn’t understand why Gu Nianqing had kissed her. “It must have been a dream. It has to be. Gu Nianqing couldn’t have kissed me. Yes, I was dreaming,” Ji Wan tried to convince herself. But it was no use. The memory was too clear, the scene too vivid. Ji Wan couldn’t forget.
Knock, knock, knock… A loud knocking came from the door, accompanied by Lin Luo’s annoying voice. “Ji Xiaowan, are you awake? Bai Weiwei just told me you were.” As she spoke, Lin Luo pushed open Ji Wan’s door.
“I’m awake! What’s it to you, you annoying Lin Luo?!” Ji Wan stuck her head out from the blanket, directing all her frustration toward Lin Luo. She couldn’t bring herself to tell Bai Weiwei about Gu Nianqing kissing her, nor did she dare to confront the “big ice block,” Gu Nianqing. All her pent-up frustration could only be aimed at the unlucky Lin Luo.
“Oh, my, so much anger. Are you frustrated? Didn’t Gu satisfy you?” Lin Luo said cheekily, looking at Ji Wan’s red little face and slightly swollen lips. She sat down on the edge of Ji Wan’s bed, grinning mischievously.
Ji Wan’s face flushed as she remembered the scene with Gu Nianqing in the water. “Get out!” she snapped, glaring at Lin Luo.
“What’s wrong, Princess? Did Gu bully you? It’s fine, just get used to it. After all, you used to like her so much, hahahaha!” Lin Luo continued to be a pest. She was now an insider with the shocking secret of Ji Wan and Gu Nianqing.
Suddenly, a sharp pain shot through her waist, and Lin Luo’s expression instantly twisted. “Ow, that hurts! Ji Xiaowan, you’re so cruel!” She quickly escaped Ji Wan’s grasp, clutching her waist and wailing.
“Get out!” Ji Wan cried out, furious with embarrassment, grabbing a pillow and throwing it at Lin Luo’s face.
“Hmph, I’ll call your man to deal with you,” Lin Luo said, catching the pillow as it flew at her face and running out of the room. She laughed with satisfaction at Ji Wan’s powerless rage from inside the room.
“I’m the one who’s on top!” Ji Wan blurted out nonsensically. It took her a moment to realize what she had said, which was ridiculous. Her face turned bright red, and she buried herself in the blanket again, pretending to be dead.
Click. The sound of a door opening.
“You annoying Lin Luo, what do you want now?” Ji Wan stuck her head, her hair a mess, out from the blanket and yelled toward the door. The next second, she saw Gu Nianqing’s beautiful, cold face enter, a thermos in her hand.
“Why is it Gu Nianqing?” Ji Wan was shocked and immediately retreated back into the blanket, wrapping herself up like a silkworm, not daring to peek her head out. She was embarrassed again.
Gu Nianqing chuckled at Ji Wan’s actions. She walked over, placed the thermos on the bedside table, and sat on the edge of the bed. “Ji Wan,” she said softly, her voice filled with a hint of threat, “Come out. Aren’t you hungry? Or do you want me to pull you out?”
Ji Wan reluctantly pulled the blanket from her head, peeking out with a flushed face, still not daring to look at Gu Nianqing. Her face was full of unspoken grievances.
Gu Nianqing carefully opened the thermos and poured the porridge into a bowl. She picked up a spoon, gently stirred it to cool it down, and held it to Ji Wan’s mouth. The entire action was graceful and elegant, utterly flawless.
But it was so strange! Why was Gu Nianqing feeding her porridge?!
Ji Wan stared at the spoon, unable to eat. “**T-that… I’ll… I’ll do it myself,” she stammered to Gu Nianqing.
But Gu Nianqing didn’t reply. Her eyes stayed fixed on her, implying that if Ji Wan didn’t eat, she wouldn’t lower her hand. Reluctantly, Ji Wan opened her mouth and took a bite. “Damn, it’s so good,” Ji Wan’s eyes lit up. She stared intently at the porridge in Gu Nianqing’s hand. The porridge was thick yet soft, with a rich and savory taste. It was just a bowl of plain porridge, but Ji Wan was eating it like a gourmet meal.
Gu Nianqing smiled and scooped up another spoonful, holding it out for Ji Wan. Ji Wan obediently accepted it; her stomach had been empty for a long time. The bowl of porridge was finished entirely with Gu Nianqing feeding her.
Watching Ji Wan’s satisfied expression after eating, Gu Nianqing reached out and gently wiped a grain of rice from Ji Wan’s lip, bringing it to her own mouth. “**Mmm, not bad,” she said, her eyes captivating like an enchantress’s. She was completely different from her usual self.
Ji Wan stared blankly at Gu Nianqing’s actions. Her face embarrassingly flushed again. “Y-y-you…” Ji Wan was so shocked she couldn’t speak, her face red all the way to her ears.
Gu Nianqing was feeling playful. She leaned closer to Ji Wan’s face. “What about me?” she said with a hint of a smile. Then, she saw the girl’s face turn even redder, like a ripe, tasty apple she wanted to bite. Thinking of this, Gu Nianqing didn’t hold back. She gazed at the girl’s rosy, delicate cheeks and gently kissed Ji Wan’s cheek, a light, fleeting touch like a dragonfly skimming the water. Then, with Ji Wan’s shocked expression still on her face, Gu Nianqing left the room, a smile still playing on her lips.
“Help! The female lead kissed me again! Ahh!” Ji Wan’s expression was a mix of shock and disbelief.
A Run-In and a Confession
After the trip ended, Ji Wan began to avoid Gu Nianqing even more. She would tense up when she saw her in class, and if she ran into her on the street, she would turn and run away in a cowardly manner. Even Lin Luo and Bai Weiwei noticed the strangeness between Ji Wan and Gu Nianqing.
“Hey, Ji Xiaowan. What’s wrong with you? You run away every time you see Gu, like a cat seeing a mouse,” Lin Luo gossiped, trying to get some answers. Even Bai Weiwei looked at her with a curious expression.
Ji Wan’s hand holding her chopsticks trembled, and the vegetables she was holding fell back into her plate. She stiffened. “Nothing. You’re overthinking it. I was like this before, right?”
“But you weren’t this flustered before, and you wouldn’t run away without saying a word,” Bai Weiwei added.
“There’s nothing going on. I’m full. I’m leaving.” Ji Wan ended the topic early and pushed her chair away, hurrying off as if in full retreat.
“Hey, Wanwan! Finish your food before you go!” Bai Weiwei called after her, but Ji Wan was already running far away.
“Something’s not right. This is really not right,” Lin Luo said, chewing on her straw and looking at Bai Weiwei, her face full of speculation.
“Mmm, I don’t know what happened between them,” Bai Weiwei replied simply, a worried look on her face.
Ji Wan frantically ran toward the library, her mind replaying the image of Gu Nianqing kissing her. Her face became redder and redder, her head nearly steaming. She ran with her head down and didn’t notice a figure turning the corner ahead.
Thump. Ji Wan accidentally bumped into someone. As she was about to fall, a hand grabbed her, and she fell into a warm embrace.
“I’m sorry,” Ji Wan mumbled, still in the person’s arms. She quickly pulled away and looked up to thank the kind person.
Gu Nianqing’s face appeared before her eyes again. Ji Wan froze for a moment, and then, realizing who it was, she bolted, as if the person in front of her were a terrible monster.
But Gu Nianqing grabbed Ji Wan’s wrist and pinned her against the dark red wall at the corner. She leaned in, trapping Ji Wan and preventing her from moving. “Are you scared of me?” Gu Nianqing asked coldly, with one hand holding Ji Wan’s waist tightly and the other pinching her chin. Her eyes were dark and unreadable.
“N-no… No. Please… let me go first,” Ji Wan said nervously, pinned against the wall. Her hands pushed against Gu Nianqing’s chest in protest. Her voice was soft and weak from the pain of the collision, and her brows furrowed, but she didn’t dare complain.
“Then why are you avoiding me?” The question was still soft but carried a forceful tone.
“Gu Nianqing. You’re hurting me,” Ji Wan said awkwardly, trying to break free from Gu Nianqing’s hold. She felt a vague sense of guilt.
Sensing the girl’s discomfort, Gu Nianqing slightly loosened her grip. “I’ll give you the summer to think about us,” Gu Nianqing said.
“Wha… what about us?” Ji Wan was confused. She asked once she was a little more comfortable.
“Date me.” Gu Nianqing’s thumb gently caressed Ji Wan’s face. Gu Nianqing’s face was serious and held a hint of anticipation. Only she knew the hurt and helplessness she felt when Ji Wan avoided her. Her emotions were far from the calm she was showing now.
“Why me?” Ji Wan’s expression was a little terrified and flustered. She didn’t dare to look directly into Gu Nianqing’s eyes.
“Is ‘I like you’ a good enough reason?” Gu Nianqing said forcefully, grabbing Ji Wan’s chin and making her look into her eyes.
“N-no, mmph…” Before Ji Wan could finish, Gu Nianqing blocked her words, not wanting to hear the cruel rejection from the girl’s mouth. A scorching serpent inched its way into the soft flower, forcing her to yield more nectar. There was no technique, just brute force. The suffocating attack slowly destroyed the girl’s fragile defenses. It was a long battle, filled with heavy breaths.
When the kiss was over, Gu Nianqing looked at Ji Wan’s disbelieving eyes. She gently wiped a silver thread of saliva from the corner of Ji Wan’s lips. Her gaze was deep and dark. The pitch-black ink of her eyes was hidden deep inside.
“I said you have the summer break. Think about it carefully,” Gu Nianqing said before letting go of Ji Wan and turning to leave.
“Ugh…” Without the support, her legs went completely soft. Ji Wan slid down the wall to the floor, breathing heavily and desperately taking in the precious oxygen. Tears streamed down her face. Her cheeks were flushed, as if she were drunk.
Helpless, she raised a hand to wipe away her tears. She was too weak to get up and sat paralyzed on the ground.
“I hate you, I hate you, boohoo, Gu Nianqing, I hate you…” Ji Wan felt incredibly ashamed. She was here to complete a mission. She didn’t want, and couldn’t, be in a relationship, especially not with the female lead. After all, Weiwei was the official partner. But her heart had been pounding just now.
Gu Nianqing, who had not left, leaned in the shadows of the corner with her head down, quietly listening to the girl’s soft, whimpering complaints. A hint of obsession was in her eyes. “Ji Wan, you can’t escape. You can only be mine.”
In the days that followed, Ji Wan continued to avoid Gu Nianqing. Gu Nianqing’s expression remained indifferent. Lin Luo even started to assume they had broken up, even though they had never been together. She couldn’t help but notice the strange tension between them every day.
An anonymous post on the school gossip forum appeared: “Shocking! The campus rivals break up and get back together, and even after breaking up, they still can’t let go of each other.”
