I Got My Engagement Annulled… Even Though We Were Never Engaged - Chapter 8
After having tea in the dining room, Father took one petal of the Eternal Rose from me and cheerfully holed up in his laboratory. It’s a relief he seems energetic.
According to Mother, even though he appears energetic, he can only stay awake for a few hours each day, but he’s probably excited because his medicine is nearly complete. I hope there won’t be any backlash later.
“So, how long exactly are you staying here? You’re not planning to stay until this season ends, are you?”
Even after Father hurriedly left the dining room, Mother and I remained lounging comfortably together in the dining room.
My mother, who looks like she’s only about thirty years old and is what you’d call a beautiful sorceress, appears very beautiful even to me, her daughter.
…I’ve always wondered, why did this mother choose such an ordinary father?
It’s a noble marriage. There must be various political reasons and such, but even from a daughter’s perspective, my father and mother seem like an ill-matched couple.
Father isn’t exactly ugly, but he’s ordinary and like air (though he can be noisy when he gets worked up). Meanwhile, Mother is a powerful magician with graceful features who must have had many suitors.
“Hey, Mother?”
“Yes, dear?”
“Why did you marry Father?”
When I asked, Mother blinked her eyes amusingly.
“Oh my, has Adeline finally started thinking about marriage? Is that because of the person who gave you that Eternal Rose?”
“That’s not it! It’s just that he was a somewhat unusual person.”
“How was he unusual?”
“…He said I was cute.”
I kept quiet about how he’d declared he was breaking off our engagement despite us not being engaged, and when I just said that much, Mother burst out laughing.
“My, what good taste he has. Why did you turn him down?”
“Why?! Do you really think he meant it when he said I was cute?”
“I do think so.”
Wasn’t that just parental bias?
When I gave her a skeptical look, Mother shrugged.
“If you can’t believe that, then perhaps marriage with that person wouldn’t have worked out. Now then… You were asking why I married your father?”
Mother lightly tapped the rim of her empty teacup with her perfectly manicured nails.
Then she smiled sweetly.
“I thought he was cute.”
…Was I being teased by Mother?
I let out a soft sigh and vowed to myself that I would forget about Lord Fevan Levesius.
