At the Marquis Levesius’ party, Lady Adrienne Cambrelive was suddenly addressed by the wrong name, had her engagement called off, and was subjected to an outrageous coming out.
The one who had mistakenly declared the engagement annulment was Fevan, the eldest son of the Marquis Levesius family.
After receiving a formal apology from Fevan and the Marquis and Marquess Levesius, Adrienne returned home that day. However, it seemed the engagement cancellation scandal at the party had instantly become the talk of the social world.
By the next morning, Adrienne had been saddled with the outrageous nickname “The Count’s Daughter Who Lost to a Man.”
Though she was despairing over the situation, as the ordinary second daughter of a count, she couldn’t expect any good marriage prospects.
She had resigned herself to the fact that at this rate, the best she could hope for was to remain unmarried, become a widow, enter a convent, or become the second wife of some much older widower. Just as she was packing her belongings to live leisurely on her estate until the rumors died down, Fevan – the very source of the engagement cancellation declaration showed up at her door a few days later.
And then he proposed, saying “Please marry me.” Apparently, he felt responsible for the strange rumors that had spread about Adrienne, and had come to see her immediately after finalizing the cancellation of his actual engagement.
“I won’t marry out of responsibility.”
Though Adrienne firmly refused, Fevan wouldn’t give up.
