I Got My Engagement Annulled… Even Though We Were Never Engaged - Chapter 12
Looking back now, I realize that even if I were to refuse, I said something quite unladylike.
But at that time, I was angry at Mariotte’s remarks, and I think he was plenty rude to me too.
…Though I may have given Mariotte such a sharp retort, the truth is no suitor ever actually appeared for me, and when one finally did show up, it was all about “responsibility” again.
I may have spoken proudly, but perhaps I’m incapable of finding a marriage partner for any reason other than obligation.
Still, even so, I don’t want to marry because of “responsibility.” People might think, “Who does she think she is, acting so high and mighty when she’s not even popular?” But I don’t want to make myself any more miserable than I already am.
Lord Fevan, who had been silently listening to my story, said “I’m sorry” in a small voice. Just like Mariotte that day. Do men say “I’m sorry” when they feel awkward?
“I’ve wounded your pride, haven’t I?”
It’s not something as grand as pride, but well, it is something I can’t compromise on.
I do have my self-respect, after all.
“That’s why I’ll accept your apology but not your sense of responsibility. And you’ve already apologized quite sufficiently.”
“It was my father who apologized, not me.”
“It’s the same thing. Besides, you gave me the Eternal Rose, didn’t you? Thanks to that, my father’s health improved, and considering that, I think I’ve received more than enough apology.”
“That wasn’t an apology. Ah, you’re quite formidable.”
Lord Fevan scratched his head vigorously.
“Admittedly, at first I intended to take responsibility. But now, I’ve become interested in you. I’ve seen many young ladies who wouldn’t hesitate to use any means, whether it’s responsibility or anything else, but you’re the first girl who’s refused responsibility so firmly.”
“You’re welcome to think I’m a strange woman. That’s why I still don’t have a fiancé.”
“The reason you don’t have a fiancé is because the men of this world are all fools who can’t recognize your charm. Well, it’s quite convenient for me though.”
With a light laugh, Lord Fevan smoothly – with terrifyingly natural movements took my hand.
Then, he placed a feather-light kiss on the back of it with a soft “chu.”
“!?”
Startled by the suddenness, I tried to pull my hand back, but Lord Fevan’s grip was unexpectedly strong and wouldn’t let go.
“Miss Adeline Cambrelive, let me propose again properly. This time, please marry me regardless of responsibility. I’m certain I’ll never meet another wonderful girl like you in my entire life.”
Had Lord Fevan taken leave of his senses?
If not, he must have eaten something strange.
Facing this man who looked every bit the sparkling prince with a melting smile, I let out a long, long sigh.
